(To his credit, he doesn't immediately wrap her in his robe despite the desire to do so. It really doesn't do any good to coddle Leia, particularly because she's not his child [or a child], she consciously makes her own decisions [on her own behalf], and if her father [probably] doesn't have a problem with it, neither should he.) ]
Not too warm. The breeze here has been pleasant.
[ He bows shallowly in greeting, trying hard for casual and even, but mostly achieving wooden. ]
Have you been enjoying yourself?
no subject
A nod, at his question.] I've missed being outside. [When she can put aside the knot of worry that is her son, this is the most relaxing spate of time she's spent in years.] Have you?
no subject
[ His hands disappear into his sleeves and he very nearly becomes entirely encapsulated, save for the hood. If he could justify its use it could complete the look, but muck like Leia, he's enjoying the feel of the sunlight. ]
I haven't seen Han or Luke recently, but I trust they're well. And how are you?
no subject
I'm fine, thank you. [She hasn't told Luke yet--she doesn't want to tell anyone before her twin. (Well, besides Han, naturally.) The thought that it could get back to her brother before she intended him to find out is an awful one; after everything Luke went through last month, the least he deserves is a nice vacation.] I'm not sure what Luke's been up to, but Han's been trying every bar he comes across.
[A little smile--focus on the joke, Obi-Wan, please allow yourself to be misdirected.]
no subject
He doesn't find a joke to be amused over, but he smiles nonetheless. ]
Perhaps I'll join him if we cross paths.
[ A pause. ]
Have you been shopping? I suspect many people will be filling out their living quarters.
no subject
You should. He's found some amazing places. [So far, her favourite is the one that felt more like a forest than a room, with birds flapping from branch to branch above them.]
Not much...but picking up some new decor isn't a bad idea. [Some people--Wanda, she knows--have private rooms, and eventually, she'll qualify for one, surely. It'd be nice if it was decorated with something other than Han's socks.] Have you? Or are the rules of attachment the same for things?
[It's said lightly, without malice--she's genuinely curious whether Obi-Wan is allowed to enjoy himself to the same extent as everyone else here.]
no subject
[ What reticence he's had about discussing this with Leia seems to have fallen away, probably because he realizes there's little point in promoting traditions that are clearly falling by the wayside.
He shrugs lightly. ]
It's not something thoroughly observed, even in our time. Anakin and I have starfighters. Most of us do, actually. Even Master Yoda has a ship he calls his own. We skirt the concept of attachment by calling them tools, but it's still attachment if we call them our own.
Nevertheless, I find it easier to have less. [ An alarmingly common thought for Obi-Wan, but not lacking in its own wisdom. ] So, no, I haven't personally done any shopping.
no subject
[She sits down beside him, drawing her knees up so she can rest her chin on them.
When applied to people, Leia's always going to find it horrible, especially when she considers what the Jedi did to Anakin. But things have comparatively limited value, and chasing after them got her into trouble last month. (She was chasing ghosts, too, and admittedly, she doesn't regret the moss painting now decorating her bunk, but it still wasn't exactly healthy.)]
But it's still difficult sometimes. [Lightly, ever lightly.] I'm guessing the challenge is part of the point.
no subject
[ It feels cold and clinical to say it that way, but in some manners it's entirely that. As a servant of the Force he must put aside everything, absolutely everything. In that there is much challenge. ]
How's the water? [ And then, as a sudden thought: ] Have you appropriately shielded yourself against solar radiation?
no subject
The water is nice--you should try it sometime. You might have to compromise on your clothing, though.
no subject
[ Which is just his way of saying it's not really something he expects to do, although he never quite fully rules anything out. ]
Have you finished your lightsabers yet?
no subject
[She cuts herself off. But it's so tempting to go on, to confide in Obi-Wan and see what his thoughts are. If it wasn't, she doubts she'd have gotten that much of the sentence out.
At this point, the only person she's told is Han, and they haven't spoken of it since. As comforting as it is to know that the future needn't ruin their present, it's still a hard thing to carry.
You might not like the answer, she reminds herself. You might just prove all his assumptions about attachment right.]
We haven't had as much time for khyber crystals lately.
no subject
He does what he can to respect her privacy, but his hesitation at moving forward from that is fairly clear. ]
Luke said you were meditating together.
no subject
[To say she's been avoiding him isn't quite right, but she's certainly been giving him his space. Occasionally, she's meditated on her own, but it's not as easy to move past her own thoughts without Luke by her side.
She has to tell someone, she realizes. She might as well tell Obi-Wan; he can keep a secret, if anyone can. And continuing to carry this in silence feels impossible.]
I have some awful news to give him, and I want him to have a break before he hears it. He's earned that much. [She falls quiet for a moment, hugging her legs as she stares out toward the horizon.] I have a son here.
no subject
Awful news? Leia, that sounds— [ He shakes his head. ] I don't understand. Why would that be awful news? What's wrong?
no subject
[She can't tell Obi-Wan about Han; the thought of saying it aloud in public makes her chest clench. Better to keep it vague, on the off chance that anyone might be listening.]
no subject
Wrong how?
no subject
I don't know. I don't know what happened to make him so...[a shake of her head, the right descriptors remaining just out of reach]...he's angry, but I think he's been hurt. Anyone would be angry.
[She was, wasn't she? She is. It's quieter now than it has been, but injustice and loss are embittering. Anyone would be angry--she has to believe that much.]
I don't know what made him this way, but Han and I must have had something to do with it. [You got rid of me. Even with what she isn't saying, there's too much she doesn't know. The pieces don't fit together for her--how could they have gone so wrong with him?]
no subject
She doesn't have a lot of facts, nor has it happened in her time, and yet here she is damning herself just the same. That suggests a great amount of emotional content for all involved. ]
Is angry so awful? [ He squeezes her a little. ] Anger can be overcome.
no subject
[Her resolution not to tell him wavers--but even if she believes Obi-Wan can keep a secret, she's not prepared to have that particular conversation among others.]
If you spoke with him, you'd understand. There's something wrong there--it's not just anger.
no subject
Obi-Wan tries to think, then, of who it could be — who she might be talking about — and only one face comes to mind. And honestly, he's too legitimately afraid to ask if he's right in his assumption. ]
He's... unstable?
no subject
Her voice is low when she speaks again. This is veering into private territory, but it should give Obi-Wan an idea of just what kind of behavior she's talking about.]
When he arrived, he tried to beat Han to a pulp. No explanation--nothing. [She digs her fingernails into her shin.] He hates him. And he doesn't like me much more. Whatever we did...
no subject
[ Which seems like a strange leap from something like that, but it's alarming in a way that lends credence to Leia's words. Obi-Wan doesn't resent his father, but if he did, he would use his fists first.
He has to say it. He tries not to let the words tremble out, but the more layers that build on this long-running tale, the more he hurts to be so distant from any place that could prevent the hurt involved in telling it.
He has to ask. ]
It's Kylo Ren, isn't it?
no subject
At least it's stated and out there. Some of the tension leaves her shoulders, but it's not replaced with anything; she simply sags forward a little.]
He calls himself that. [If nothing else comes from this conversation, she wants Obi-Wan to know this much. Despite the weary expression on her face, there's warmth in her voice when she says,] But we named him Ben.
no subject
Kylo Ren. Ben. The mere thought feels like a hand closing tightly around his throat. ]
We've met. [ And then his own little secret: ] He told me something of my death.
