"Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. This process consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

Having left Amissis-Re behind, tensions among crew members have continued to escalate into ship-wide consequences, and recognizing the need for some separation among those aboard the Moira, the Captains make the unanimous decision to deviate from their present course to a "nearby" planet that is notable for such popular distractions. While it is not a permanent solution, measures are being taken to monitor the crew's morale much more closely. New arrivals will be treated as they always are; yet, now, more than ever, it is important to stress the balance of working together toward their goal of reaching their destination so that everyone will return home.

WELCOME TO COLLECTIVES ASH3 - BF3 - CLF5

The Collective is a paradise resort located far from any other neighboring planets to offer the most leisurely experience possible to its patrons. Artificially created for multiple uses, it is divided into separate locales interconnected with a tubing transport system that is so fast and efficient that it’s like being teleported to the next area. Extensive mapping can be found at various intersecting points to offer some direction, and there are even recognizable adverts from a very familiar stop months before spread out across the Collective. Whether looking to explore or to simply shed the weight of anxiety, there are plenty of opportunities to be found within ASH3, BF3, and CLF5.

All crew members are given a card from the Captains that has an unlimited amount of credits on it. Organized through trade, these allow Moirans access to any of the luxuries that the Collective has to offer aside from the purchase of items considered weapons due to the escalation of recent events. Food, clothes, trinkets, or even a full spa experience—the limits, otherwise, are endless. The Captains emphasize that this is time to relax and take a break from the grind that is living and working on a spaceship as unique as the Moira.

B.E.A.C.H! THE BEST ESCAPE ANYONE CAN HAVE!
For those seeking a fun time, the Collective offers a variety of activities on ASH3. There are multiple beaches to enjoy as well as beachside kiosks offering drinks, beach toys and surf equipment for those a little more sports-minded. The tide washes in beautiful shells to collect, and there are always life-guards on duty to make sure everyone stays safe while enjoying their time on the beach. ASH3 offers a safe and friendly environment with plenty of fun in the sun for everyone. There is also a boardwalk full of restaurants, bars and plenty of games and entertainment for when you want to step off the sand but don’t want to give up being out in the sun.For those who can’t or won’t bear the sun, ASH3 also offers a thriving night life on both beach and boardwalk. There are midnight boat tours to view the bioluminescent schools of fish native to the island and bonfire dance parties that go long into the mornings. On the boardwalk, all shops are open until midnight as well as many clubs and social spots where crew can mingle with other tourists in the area.

So you don’t like the sand. It’s too hot, and it gets everywhere. Then hop onto one of the many transportation systems, slip into some warmer clothes, and take to the slopes. More experienced crew can immediately dive in, but those who need help can take lessons on how to ski or snowboard. There’s hot cocoa, sleds, snowball fights, and the occasional person making a snow angel (or snow person). ASH3 also has areas for rock climbing, sky diving, base jumping, bodyboarding, canoeing, hang gliding, jetskis, mountain biking, hiking, and much more.

WHEN I SHOP, THE WORLD GETS BETTER
Not everyone enjoys shopping, but this Collective entices even the most frugal and reluctant into spending their credits here. In fact, the Captains are encouraging this. They give the explicit “order” to buy whatever you want for yourself and your fellow crew members, but more than that, to consider making purchases to better the ship. Is there any area of the Moira that needs spruced up? Maybe some fresh paint in the mess hall,or new furniture in the decks? Maybe some fancy curtains for all those windows on the observation deck, or a few throw pillows? New pots and pans for the kitchen might be something to add to this list as well as equipment for the rec area, or whatever else you think BF3 will have to help increase comfort aboard the Moira.

To enhance your shopping experience, the technology here allows you to try on clothes without lifting a hand. The food here is an unlimited spread of gourmet dining to comfort food and every dessert you can think of. When you’re finished with your purchases, have all your packages and larger items delivered back to the ship for you.

TREAT YO SELF
The accommodations on the Collective of CLF5 are as unique as they come. Lodging is available for those who want to sleep in an environment that’s underwater or perhaps those who desire something as simple as a soft bed. No matter what kind of room you want to purchase for the night, it’ll be available here, and the only true limit is the imagination. When you aren’t relaxing in a hotel room, you’ll find that there are numerous spas and hair salons that offer varied services. Gold face masks rejuvenate your skin, the Ever Young™ Spa can make you look ten years younger with one treatment, and the mud baths are known across the universes for making you feel youthful and refreshed. If you’re looking for a new hairstyle or to relax, this Collective is the place for you to spend those hard-earned credits.

Asides from the fact that Nihlus had no solid evidence beyond Mile's word, the profile and he own intuition, well...

He hasn't had a reason to act. Everything he's learning about her, everything he's seen and heard about her pointed to a person who wasn't going to actively sow discord for the sake of it. Not a particularly pleasant person, no, but not openly violent.

In retrospect, it made sense: she's assumed the role of the person she wanted to take the place of already. She's keeping her head down and putting on her best behavior now to keep people off her back. Without an external figure like Brooks to guide her and in a universe where Shepard's identity and political power meant next to nothing, the clone wouldn't have any other objectives.

The question then, is whether or not exposing her would be dangerous. Considering she was a two and a half year old human with poor acting and secret keeping skills, perhaps he could get the answer just by, well. Talking.

Eventually, Nihlus makes his way over with a tray of... well. It's meat. It's blue meat. It sure is a lot of blue meat.

"Feels like we haven't talked in a while," he says as he takes a seat, tones gentle and warm. "How's life been treating you?"

With the way he's been following her lately, it seems like he should know damn well how life's been treating her, having seen a lot of it. Rather than point this out, she just shrugs.

"I did tell you I didn't need a mentor," she says, aiming for light, an excuse as to why they haven't talked; her being on edge means there's still a little tension to it. "But life's been fine. Stayed out of that reverse Ingress after..." He may know about her, but she doesn't want him to know that she knows that he knows. (This whole situation gives her a headache.) So she lets her nose crinkle like she's still trying to think of what to call Shepard. "The other me ended up in medbay."

While the fact that she stayed out of the reverse Ingress is true, it didn't have anything to do with Shepard's incapacitation: She'd simply tired of it and hadn't wanted to risk ending up somewhere she wouldn't know enough, or worse, with Brooks.

"These planets are nice," she adds, which is far more truthful. Could do with fewer aliens, but otherwise, nice. "What about you?"

"Heh, I'm not looking to be your mentor. You're an appointed Spectre," Nihlus points out as he goes about the task of cutting up a piece of steak. "We ARE colleagues, however, and colleagues have awkward chats at the lunch table together."

It's a fact.

"I've been busy. Mostly just with the fabricator now since I finished a lot of the Scraplet related repairs." And, well, everything involving Rinzler, but he's pretending not to be.

"Decided to come down and try some real food for once. It's nice being in a place with more dextro options."
petridish: (I never hide)

I'M SO SORRY also I looked for you on the overflow log

[personal profile] petridish 2016-07-06 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's tempting to point out that they're not really colleagues with him in engineering and her in the Tower, but then he's moving on, and she probably already looks suspicious enough with that initial attempt to keep him at arm's length. She also bites her tongue on calling him out on how he hasn't just come down here for the food, given his stalking her all over the Collectives.

"Must be," she says in agreement, with a nod to his steak. It's somewhat putting her off her own food: She's not confident on this, but in her limited experience, meat isn't usually blue. "Bought any dextro supplies for the ship?"

She knows the ship has dextro food, since Tali hadn't starved before she went into cryo, but if he's using more options as his excuse for being here, then fine, this is his awkward chat subject.

It is alright! Sorry for getting back to this so slowly!

[personal profile] beautifulspaceraptor 2016-07-10 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Technically, they're not colleagues to begin with and Nihlus was never her mentor. But technicalities was besides the point here, wasn't it?

"Oh, yes," he chuckles. "Lots of jerky and protein bars and some fresh meat."

The first two lot were stashed away in hidey holes all over the ship. The final item was in a locked box in the freezer. He's just a liiiiittle bit paranoid.

"It'll taste better than ration bars and whatever weird thing the cook thinks up. I suppose I could also try and see about stocking up through the Ingress, too. Allison managed to get some dextro smoothies out of the thing after all."

There's a brief paused filled with the 'clink' of utensils on ceramic, the expression on Nihlus' face turning thoughtful.

"You should come an eat lunch with us more often. I hate to see you left out," he says after a moment, tones soft. "Or does the other Shepard make you uncomfortable?"
petridish: (with enough neural implants)

have you MET me

[personal profile] petridish 2016-07-15 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
Briefly, she wonders what kind of things her chorebot is making on her kitchen shifts she's sending it to, but it's not like she's noticed a dip in quality on the nights she used to spend in the kitchen.

The invitation to further lunches gets a roll of her eyes.

"I am not left out when I chose this, before she even showed up," she says firmly. The more time she spends around Shepard and Tali, the more time they have to realize she's not an alternate version like she's claiming. Besides, people can't be trusted: Brooks taught her that and then proved it.

"But sure, being around someone who looks just like me but had a far easier life makes me uncomfortable." It's not even a lie. Never mind her own almost being killed in the tank and then spending six months constantly training in hiding, next to the Shepard of her world, this one was born with a silver spoon in her mouth even before she started amassing a cult of misguided, irresponsible followers. "And eating lunch with her isn't going to help."

WELL

[personal profile] beautifulspaceraptor 2016-07-16 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
"It never ceases to amaze me how much of a complete hermit you've become." Nihlus rests his chin atop his palm, looking mildly amused as he spears a cube of blue meat on his fork. "We have gossip and bad engineering puns and you'd pass that up for a quiet lunch? Honestly now."

He pops the bit of meat into his mouth, savoring the flavor briefly before swallowing it whole. Turians didn't exactly chew, after all.

"Now why does her having an easier life make you uncomfortable?" The amusement stays in his expression, but something strange in his tones.
petridish: (we're not even in the same league)

[personal profile] petridish 2016-08-07 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
With a frown, she pokes her food around her plate (today's obliviously odd combination: a vegetable curry and sushi), but gets in, "Because no one could possibly want some quiet in their work day," as he eats his meat.

She's far from amused at the question, leaning back in her chair, subconsciously to put more space between them.

"What does it matter? Same DNA or not, some people just aren't made to be..." She doesn't need (or know about) Sparatus's finger quote marks; she can let her voice handle it. "'Best buddies'."

Particularly when one of those people was made to be spare parts for the other.
beautifulspaceraptor: (look at his beautiful fucking eyes)

[personal profile] beautifulspaceraptor 2016-08-12 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
"That's not what I asked, is it?"

If he notices the way she leans away from him, Nihlus doesn't show it. He eats in silence for a moment, expression oddly contemplative.

"You're awfully wrapped up in comparing yourself against her. Your backgrounds, your DNA." He looks up, vivid green eyes meeting hers, glimmering coldly in the buffet's warm lighting. "It's not the fact you're not treating her like a 'buddy'. It's mostly that you seem straight up... resentful of her."

"Nothing wrong with that." And just like that, he slips back to his amicable self. "I'm just curious as to why. I didn't peg you as the resentful sort, Shepard."
petridish: (Default)

[personal profile] petridish 2016-08-15 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
For a moment, she thinks he'll bring it up now; in a public place where any of their crewmates could be eating too, he'll outright say she's a clone and not the real Commander Shepard. She crosses her legs, one foot propped under the table ready to kick it up at a moment's notice, ready to cause a distraction so she can escape -

And then he's doing that friendly, 'curious' thing again, and she knows not to cause a scene.

"I guess you forgot why they call me the Butcher of Torfan," she says, keeping her gaze steady on his. She'll never really know why the Shepard of
her timeline sent so many of her squad to their deaths to wipe out even
surrendering batarians, but she's willing to bet resentment was a factor.
"And even that's outdated information to be pegging me from. A lot's
changed in three years.)
beautifulspaceraptor: (heh!)

[personal profile] beautifulspaceraptor 2016-08-15 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
People do change over time, but they still tended to retain certain baseline traits. The real Shepard onboard still carried over a lot of what he'd seen from her dossier and Eden Prime, even after three years and a resurrection.

The clone didn't carry any of her Shepard's baselines. That Shepard was ruthless, but she carried herself like a commander and she had the charisma to make her squad members throw themselves into the fire for her cause. There was also a slight but key difference between resentful and vengeful.

He doesn't point out any of these things to her.

"Pfft." Yeah, that's a pretty weird noise coming from a Turian. "You're not going to kill your alternate or anything are you, oh 'Butcher of Torfan'? Because that's going to be seven flavors of messy and awkward no matter how much you dislike her."
