old but unfamiliar faces
"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

At first, this month seems no more unusual than the previous one for those who have been aboard the Moira for any amount of time. The crew who had landed on the slaver outpost were rescued, and with everyone aboard, the ship has pushed forward into the darker parts of the Runoff. Anyone arriving through the Ingress follows the same routine—moving from the Ingress room into the Medbay for their physical and contract before being assisted by seasoned crew members and helped to their assigned decks. But all familiar things must eventually come to an end: two final travelers come through the Ingress. The first, and most noticeable difference between them and all the others, is their clothing. Both are dressed in standard Moira uniforms, though they bear the insignia of one sharing the same rank as Captains Cúrre and Thán. After a moment to take in all the people on the platform ahead of them, one of the two latest arrivals approaches one of the Ingress panels and begins to manipulate the controls. The Ingress completely shuts down. Unlike before, however, there isn’t an imbalance felt across the ship; everything remains normal and stable.

Utilizing the computer systems located in the Ingress room, they send out the following message to the crew via the MID:

To all those aboard this vessel: I am Ira Phirun, assigned captain of the Moira. First Mate Egan and I will be commandeering all rights to the ship as soon as word is sent to those currently in charge. Expect a more detailed report as soon as all records and logs in Navigation have been reviewed by myself and the First Mate. All questions will be answered in a timely matter. For now, there will be no interruption of daily routine or reprimand if conduct among ranks is broken. Thanks for your time.

Heading to Navigation, the Captain and First Mate, for seemingly unknown reasons, approach Navigator Manasseh and have her show them all records and logs of the Moira. Those working in Navigation when the Captain and First Mate arrive will see Mana greet them in a professional manner. Oddly, the Captain and First Mate act very familiar with the Navigator. They review all documents, but when they come upon news that the Ploiatos is on board, their mostly friendly demeanor shifts quickly. The Captain issues a sharp order, unintelligible to those who are close enough to overhear parts of their conversation, and without any warning at all, Mana loses consciousness and collapses right there on the bridge. Within minutes of this happening, the ship as a whole falls into a low power state with basic functions only. Mana’s MID alerts Medbay, and without hesitation, Captain Cúrre places her in cryo with strict orders to those who work there not to disturb the unit.

As promised, the Captain and First Mate soon address the crew.

lights down low
The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill.

reuse & recycle
The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet.

new jobs, same faces
The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment?

[He lets out a small huff of laughter at that.]

Yeah, good point. And I wouldn't give you the full twenty all at once, anyway. Most of it's less exciting than you'd expect.

[He pauses as one particular highlight comes to mind, considering how his kid self just identified him.]

I'll say this much upfront—when you meet a guy named Harry Flynn, if for some reason you can remember this conversation, kick him in the balls. Really hard.

There's not too much of a lightshow. While basic access did seem to include some degree of electrical control, it rated closer to switch access than any real capability to redistribute. (And holograms are for people with an actual body to project.)

Still, when he notices the armored figure looking, it's not hard to slip into one of the room's display consoles. A blue logo appears, flickering a few times before it settles on a stable pattern of asymmetry. The same cheerful monotone speaks up from the computer.

"<Greetings. This is the automated system administrator. How can I be of assistance?>"

A beat. Then:

"Well... not administrator, here. Resident? Wonder if I could swing that substitution." The musing tones pick up quickly. "But no, I'm a fresh install. Nice to meet you."

[Liquid's grown, but a part of him's always going to be that angry kid. And there's no mistaking the hostility that comes through in his body language upon hearing that name. It passes, though, soon enough. He's calm.]

I know Nyoka ya Mpembe can be hard to pronounce, but honestly.

[He snorts.]

Not that it matters anymore. It's Liquid, now. Liquid Snake. I've grown a bit, yeah.

[Well, at least nobody'll have to worry about him trying to stab them now. He's kind of learned a little thing called restraint. Mostly.]

[Wanda really shouldn't take those corners so closely when the lighting is this bad, but she also was a little too distracted in her own thoughts and worries to even hear the other footsteps. Oops.

She knows who caught her before she looks up, for all the good it will do human eyes in this dim light. That voice is too distinct...]

[She didn't know he was back, but she's happy to see him regardless.]

I'm sorry, too. I should have been more careful.

[After getting surprised by Nihlus five months ago and today by the other Shepard, she doesn't want any more surprises, so she's scouring the directory on her MID as she walks in. The name 'Kaidan' gets a doubletake, particularly as Nihlus had come here from the dead, but someone else has got to have the name in all those different realities, right?

[So she only gives the guy a nod as she sits down across from him with her own tray.]

Yeah, it looks bad, but the human food's usually okay.

The size and features of her new co-worker only startles Yori a little, though she makes a silent note to ask details of that home system if there's a chance off-duty.

"I don't know the new captains," Yori answers as accurately as possible, "though I seem to have arrived just ahead of them." She's still trying to decide whether it's a good thing or a bad one that everyone aboard ship looks as confused about the sudden change as she feels.

Efficiency sounds like something the Master Control Program would order of his army. These Users might be worse or they might take free time for granted. She can't tell.

She shrugs an apology. "I've only just started training for this position, but is there anything I can do to help?"

[Though he raises an eyebrow, Nate nods, deciding to take this as another warning.]

Just kick him? Because I could cut 'em off if you want.

[He taps his fingers on the hilt of his gunblade, the only part revealed by that long and pointy-looking holster on his belt.

[Despite the tone, this is not a(n entirely) serious suggestion.]

Jesus, what the hell did they teach you in that school?

[He gives the kid (Is that how he's going to think of him? Guess so, Sully would be amused) an incredulous look, not thinking he's definitely serious but not certain he isn't.]

No, a swift ballkick will do it. he ends up getting shot by someone else and then blowing himself up with a grenade, so it's not like he doesn't get what's coming to him.

[He glances around them. A couple people are giving them curious looks.] Look, you wanna go for a walk or something, lose the audience?

[ It's all right, Bucky's not looking to start a fight either. The new arrival is a curious one, short and young and not all that threatening -- but then again, he supposes it's the ones who look like him that are the most dangerous; people tend to underestimate them too much.

Bucky, for one, is curious. He relaxes just a touch, casually assessing him. It only takes a moment for him to respond, and there's a ghost of a smile that twitches at the side of his mouth. It's a fleeting impression, gone in a heartbeat. ]
Are you asking me, or telling me?

[ But that's a purely rhetorical question; Bucky moves on to what he really means to ask. ]

What kind of personal defenses are you good at? [ It's not often that a kid gets picked to be a personal defense specialists, he's quite sure the captains are many things, but they're not entirely imbeciles. ]

After the utter incompetency of the captains who originally welcomed them aboard, Leia wants to welcome the new captain and first mate with open arms. Their changes are bordering on pointless austerity, though, and arguing against putting Killik Twilight in storage is starting to give her a headache.

She goes for a walk in hopes of clearing her head (and coming up with a few more arguments in her favour) and happens to come through some of the same corridors as a dark-haired girl working on the more public infrastructure.

"If we can scrape together the tech for it," she says to the girl. (Not one she's seen before--they must have gotten quite a few new people with this pull of the Ingress.) "You'd be surprised at how backwards some of the ship can be."

About what?

[ He invites her to elaborate, to breathe word into what they all are probably thinking. There are so many reasons to be wary, and a million things to be worried about. Bucky doesn't need light to see what's outside, and there's everything comforting about being in the shadows, like he could melt into them at any moment and not come out.

Won't that be something?

He observes her when she stands beside him, and he thinks that she's more guarded than usual. Or perhaps it's the shadows, playing tricks. ]

Her switch. To shut her off that quickly.

[ Without violence, without a measure of physical coercion. He contemplates illness, but it seems too illogical, too neat an equation. Bucky glances over at her after a moment, this girl with golden hair and deep blue eyes; he's seen her around before, but their paths have not quite crossed until now. ]

[ Oh, look. The hamster!

Bucky pays no attention to his hissy fit, because he's learned very quickly that Andyr moves on very quickly from it when he doesn't rise to the occasion (and also probably because they've discovered they've got quite a few things in common). He's noticed the new carvings, too, signs scratched into walls in rough handwriting -- he suspects it's Andyr, because the marks have all been fresh, and it seems like Andyr's been making his home in the system itself.

He doesn't shift, but he lets Andyr come up beside him if he wants to, not in a hurry to hide the map away. It had been a project of his, an objective to take his mind off darker, more dangerous things, and it had taken him a long time. ]

Yeah. [ Then, just as blandly. ] You look like you could do with one.

[Wanda recoils at first, but when that touch pulls away instead of insisting, she finds curiosity wins out over caution. River can't read her from behind the shields and that wasn't Anakin...

A thin tendril of thought reaches back, brushing against that other mind but not attempting to probe. Can this other person actually hear her, or are they just aware enough to sense her presence?

A lot of things aren't making sense right about now. [She looks back at the tubes, voice lower than before.] Her included. But I don't think we can trust their answers, no matter how many questions we ask.

[And that leaves Karen's favorite alternative - digging for answers on their own.]

How many of these cryo chambers do you think they have?

[ The Moby Dick code names still strike Snake as heavy-handed, and weariness passes over his face as the case of missed identity circles around yet again. Venom should know who he is, but it looks like wherever he went, his memory of the Moira got wiped.

The guy seems to have some trouble with memories in general.

Still, this is the man who Miller speaks of with the highest respect. This is the man who Big Boss should have been, as far as Miller's concerned. This is also the man who Snake had killed, thinking he was someone else.

The Patriots probably should have considered the problems that would crop up when they made too many people share the same face. ]

No. [ Snake shakes his head, takes a look around and decides that the area's too public. He doesn't sit, because before long he's going to insist that they move. ] Kazuhira Miller is here. Have you spoken to him? [ Miller probably would have tried to explain, but Snake needs to know how much of that now falls on him. ]

[ The worst, most twisted thing about this is that Bucky's coming to like Tony too. The man is a whirlwind of activity and thought, brilliance and wit and -- deep down inside -- a kind of hurt that he's never quite let anyone close enough to figure out. Tony is so much like his father, but Bucky's more than half-sure it would burn the man to hear it, and there's something terrible about knowing that, too.

The secret sits heavy in his chest, and when Tony looks at him like he could have a friend, he's more than tempted to tear it down, to tell him what really happened to his parents. It would be a kindness, better than the charade he puts up. A better man, perhaps, would have told Tony already. Maybe. They work very well together, and in between working together to kick out invaders and watching those Star Trek episodes, there are moments when he can almost forget the cold, painful truth that catches in his throat whenever he tries.

Tony's observation makes him wonder for a second -- does he already know? Is he really that transparent? He probably is; the guilt will eat him alive, all written across his face.

But that discovery will be on another day, and Bucky realizes that when he talks about pilates, and he snorts, feeling something wind tight in the pit of his stomach. ]

[ tretij pauses-- not because of the gun or the threat, but because something about this stranger is familiar on an almost-personal level. of course he's seen many, many soldiers in his short life, but it's something about this one's appearance, maybe, or..

he wades through the minds pressing down around him, reaching toward the stranger's and then pausing as he brushes against it.

oh. wait-- isn't he a little like eli? a little like that man.

he drifts closer, dipping in the air until he's a few feet away, bare toes brushing the floor before he eases to his feet. the corridor is cold against his skin, but he barely notices it, pale eyes staring up at snake, heedless of the weapon. guns are meaningless to him, after all; annoyances, at best.

he brushes against snake's mind again, projecting a quick, questioning image of venom snake at him. ]

[Fingers flash over the keyboard.]

You were here before. You disappeared a few months ago. [Not that it seems to matter now. The senator obviously doesn’t remember anything, which means Zam will be starting from scratch as far as the orientation goes. A pity. She had done so well avoiding it the first couple of times Amidala had appeared on the ship. She starts typing again and this time it takes a significantly longer period of time for a message to appear.]

You’re on the Moira. The Ingress behind you brought you here from our galaxy. You can’t go back through the Ingress, but the captains claim they can bring everyone back to their homes if we help the Moira reach its destination. You’ll be given a contract offering you a place onboard as long as you agree to work. Otherwise, we can drop you off at the next inhabited planet. [Stars, that’s a lot more trouble to write than it is to say. Zam’s gaze is still sour as she regards the senator, but at least her intentions don’t seem actively harmful despite the blaster at her side.]

Any questions?

Whatever recognition was in Alan’s expression when Yori brought up Rinzler is completely lost when she mentions this “Inugami.” Alan’s brow furrows as he tries to process the seemingly nonsensical piece of information.

“I… Rinzler is here and so is Tron, but… you said you were in a school with him? How did you two get there?” The Ingress accounts how they made it onto the Moira -- Alan had assumed it was how they made it out of their systems at all. Unless this school was equipped with a similar portal, Alan can’t even think of how they might’ve been brought there.

[ the voice snatches tretij's attention, his head turning sharply toward the speaker and spotting the small animal he's apparently trying to grab. for a few moments, there's no other reaction from tretij, but then he abruptly telekinetically shoves the examiner away (earning a small, startled cry as they stumble back). a moment later, he's escaping the table, and everything he'd picked up comes crashing back down again-- except sonic, thankfully. the monkey floats gently back down, and tretij drops him lightly into leo's hands.

he takes refuge behind leo, then, still practically radiating distressed hostility, scarred hands clutching at his mask as if the examiner had tried to take away an actual limb. ]
