"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

"I don't know the new captains," Yori answers as accurately as possible, "though I seem to have arrived just ahead of them." She's still trying to decide whether it's a good thing or a bad one that everyone aboard ship looks as confused about the sudden change as she feels.
Efficiency sounds like something the Master Control Program would order of his army. These Users might be worse or they might take free time for granted. She can't tell.
She shrugs an apology. "I've only just started training for this position, but is there anything I can do to help?"

"Do you know anything about spaceship navigation? It's ok if you don't, I didn't at first either, but if you do that helps a lot."

"I know a little about ships. Not much about actual space." Yori waved a hand in poorly hidden awe at the nearest display of stars. "The controls here make sense, but I need a lot more context before I'd feel safe using any of them." Navigating inside a computer network had some surprising similarities to outer space, but also more differences than Yori had yet found time to catalog.
Did she have any right to make suggestions? Everything looked very busy. It might streamline the process. "I'll do my best to learn quickly, but in the meantime if there's data you need sorted or a station that just needs to be watched for changes, that's probably the best I can manage today."

"Why don't you work on this one over here," he turned toward one of the consoles, walking over to it with his tail swishing behind him. "This one keeps an eye on objects that are far away, but may be in our path later. Let one of the navigation techs know if any of the numbers start getting really low. Also-" he bounded over to a corner of the room which he had sort of claimed as his workspace. The floor was covered in scrolls and carefully stacked books. He scanned over the labels on the spines and carefully extracted a thick volume out of the middle of one pile. He returned, carrying the book in one talon and offering it to her.
"This is 'The Guide to Interstellar Navigation'. It has a lot of helpful information, and covers a lot of the basics of traveling through space. You can borrow it if you want to read it. "

Even better, her new co-worker came back with a book. Yori accepted the offer with delight. She'd learned the basics of flat print already, and liked it; there was so much less worry over what she was asking of the programs in her MID.
"Thank you!" Yori opened the cover, scanning what she could with a first glance. Though she wasn't sure her knowledge of space was quite up to the challenge of the vocabulary, anything she didn't understand would be a very useful pointer to all the questions she'd most need to ask. Plus if she could take it back to her assigned room she'd be able to put more time into study. "This looks wonderful. I'll take good care of it," she promised. "When do I need to return it?"

"Oh, I'm Starflight, by the way. Assistant Supervisor for Navigation."

She hadn't expected so much data to be available, even if her assigned function required some of it. This ship seemed generous with resources so far.
"My name is Yori. Navigation Operation Technician," she added, in case formality was required. "According to my contract." Not much training to go with the title yet. "Pleased to meet you, Supervisor Starflight."
My apologies for the delay
"Oh, it's just. Um. Assistant Supervisor. At least, it usually is. I guess I'm the supervisor if Mana's not here? I'm not sure, it's never happened before. At least not when we weren't both unavailable." He realized he was rambling and snapped his jaw shut,
"Anyway, I expected that might be your job. Most people in Navigation have that title. They'll be able to give you directions too when they're around. Ratchet's been here longest, and Leia is really nice too, and there's a couple others, you'll meet them eventually."
no subject
(If Starflight is named for his intended function, though, she hopes he'll learn a little more confidence in the process.)
Yori commits the other names to memory. She can probably find them on the directory, too, if anything urgent turns up. "I'll remember." She offers her best effort at a reassuring smile, though given all the things she has to be uncertain of herself, it's a little shaky. "I'm sure we can figure all this out together."
She's not that sure, but the crew's got to have better odds than Tron against the MCP. Yori won't bet against them.
(ooc: No problem! Since the month's about over, I'm happy to close this thread if you want to plan something for later.)

"I sure hope so. Hopefully Manasseh will be back soon and we can all get home."
(ooc: That sounds great, thank you.)
