[ Instead, he took a step back, glancing down at himself. ]
...it was just for fun.
[ He pulled off the coat for the suit, trying desperately to think. Why the fake laugh? Why act like he's happy to see him? The last time he saw Adachi, he had pretty much dropped all pretense about the kind of person he was, even calling him a dumbass before he disappeared. So why...? ]
Adachi-san, what's the last thing that happened for you, back home?
[ It was the only thing he could think of. The message he had gotten when he arrived had said that multiple realities and timelines existed, and if Adachi was acting this way... ]

[The carefully practiced smile starts to waver just a little. What the heck kind of question is that? He takes a step back and puts a hand to his chin in thought.]
Well, I was headed to the hospital before I wound up here. Though it'd just started to snow by the time I got there, so that was some pretty good timing on my part. In any case...
There were still some things I needed to take care of for work, and I figured I'd go and see Dojima-san and Nanako-chan once it all wrapped up. I'm sure they'd feel a lot safer, too, once Namatame got transferred out of -
[Wait. Crap.]
Oh geez, who's gonna oversee things now if I'm -
[Stuck here. Didn't think about that one, now did you?]

[ Yu didn't even realize he said that out loud; even though they had seen each other briefly, it was hard to picture Adachi how he used to be. What he expected and what he got on that tower were such two radically different things, that to suddenly go back to December was almost too much of a shock to process. ]
[ It was a moment before he could let out a breath, sagging back a little. He had to tell him. He had to tell him and get it out of the way right now, because pretending that everything was just fine and there was nothing that would cause unease between them was going to eventually drive them both mad. He just had to hope that being in the middle of a store with people around would prevent the detective from finding out if his powers worked on this world or not. ]
Adachi-san...
[ He let out a breath, giving him a pointed, serious look. ]
...we caught the real murderer.
no subject
...Yeah. Yeah, I know you did.
[It's thanks to the Brat Pack that Namatame's in the hospital awaiting transfer and eventually incarceration, after all. Unless he means...
No. Adachi swallows a little before continuing. There's no way.]
And honestly, I know I probably shouldn't be saying this, but I don't think we can thank you enough. Can't even imagine how messed up it'd be if Namatame was still out there causing trouble.

[ Yu had a feeling he would try to deny it. It was before then, before they all cornered him, and now he was stuck here, with no TV for him to dive into -- at least not that he saw. He had to wonder what he would do, or what he could do. Did he have any idea of how to use his Persona without being in the TV? Probably; Adachi's power was similar to his own, and he could be just as resourceful as he was, when he made the effort. ]
[ It was a moment before he let out a small breath, shaking his head. ]
Please don't. For me, it's been over for a few months.

[But slowly, surely, Adachi's starting to understand that something's not right. Narukami's always been a quiet kid, but even this feels strange. The way he seemed to freeze up when first realizing that Adachi was here. The words that left him, too.
"...we caught the real murderer. ...It's been over for a few months."
Wait a minute. A few months? This is just like what the letter had told him from the very beginning. All that business about alternate realities, different timelines... Last time Adachi checked, it was still December the Fifth. But Yu-kun here's saying it's been several months since that point? The detective wrinkles his nose at that, because this could mean one of two things.
On one hand, the kid could be telling the truth. That's what he and the rest of his flunkies are so goddamned obsessed with, isn't it? The truth? Which would imply that not only does he see through Adachi's facade, but that he and his friends actually managed to catch him. To beat him. To end his game and throw him in jail.
On the other hand...]

Taking advantage of a situation like this one where they're detached from Inaba, from the Midnight Channel, from all that other bullshit. Where even without the rest of his little gang to back him up, he's still got Adachi cornered in a one-on-one encounter.]
Like, what, you're from the future then? Is that it?
[The saccharine smile's almost completely now. So, too, has the light in Adachi's eyes.
Odds are Narukami read the same message at the very beginning too. And if he has his suspicions about Adachi, he could use some bologna about coming from the future to try and trip Adachi up. To force a confession out of him.
What a fucking joke. Because that's not going to happen.]
Are you messing with me or something, kiddo?

[ He did keep his hand tense at his side, ready to reach up if need be. Would he try to attack him here? Would it even work right in an entirely different reality? Only one way to find out, and he was hoping it wouldn't be in a cramped space like this. ]
You know I wouldn't joke like that, Adachi-san.
no subject
[No, no, no. Take it down a notch. Knowing Narukami, this is just the sort of kneejerk reaction a brat like that would expect out of Adachi.
With his thumb and index finger, he pinches the bit of skin just above his nose and lets out a heavy sigh through his nostrils. This way, at least, he's seeing less red. Though it doesn't quite quell the beginnings of a familiar sort of migraine at the base of his skull...]
If I'm hearing you correctly, you're saying that - that in your future or whatever, you find out that Namatame's not really the killer, right? So who is it, then? If it's not him, then who could it possibly be?
[He has a sense that he knows exactly what the kid will say. But like hell Adachi will actually say it himself.
Go ahead, you little brat. Say it.]
no subject
[ Of course, he couldn't not answer now. ]
It's you, Adachi-san.

Just how much does Narukami know about what happened with Yamano and Konishi? Well... evidently enough for his gang to catch Adachi, if the boy's to be believed. Or at the very least, enough to point the finger of blame at him here and now.
The detective coolly regards Yu for a moment or so, not saying anything for what feels like a long time. Then, suddenly...]

Ohohoho, wow! Wow! Y'know, as far as baseless accusations go, your technique could use a little work, Yu-kun! But you definitely get some bonus points for creativity!
[Adachi...]

[ Once again, Yu wasn't sure how to respond -- why did he always have to make things as difficult as possible? He wasn't going to list the facts for him: that wasn't like him, and Adachi knew he was caught, if only because he was trying to protect himself now. ]
[ But what now? What would he do, now that he knew Adachi was there, and Adachi that hadn't learned anything from what happened yet. The obvious answer was to warn people, to let them know there was a murderer among them that could potentially murder again at the point he was at. But... ]
[ ...why did that not seem fair? ]
I'm... not going to do anything.
[ ...he couldn't believe he just said that. Yu paused a moment, shifting his stance. ]
Well... no, that's not true. I'm going to look out for you, but... I'm not going to say anything, about what you did.
no subject
Color Adachi skeptical. Whose side is this kid on? There has to be a catch here, there has to be.
But of course, the detective keeps blabbering on.]
Whatever that means. Like I keep telling you, there's nothing to say! Besides, we both know that Namatame's the one who threw them in there, so why - ?
[Oh.
Oh shit. It doesn't take him very long to catch his mistake and immediately shut up.]
no subject
[ He finally shook his head, casting the repeated (for him) slip up aside for now. ]
I don't know why you really did what you did. I'm not going to pretend to understand either, even after seeing everything, but...
[ He paused a moment, considering his words carefully. ]
This isn't Inaba. This isn't even our world. Whatever your reason... it's not here, is it? So maybe there's a chance you can find a second chance.
[ ...he really believed that, he realized. Even after Adachi had been arrested, he believed he could find some kind of second chance. Seeing him again a few months later, that weird kind of confidence of his, just sort of proved it anyway? The thought of Adachi standing there, calling a massive fire god an ugly sucker... really, only he would do that and get out of it a little singed. He smiled faintly at the memory, almost chuckling. ]
Besides, I've caught a glimpse of the real you. I want to hope you'll be okay.
