Zam Wesell | Star Wars | OTA
[It’s several days before Zam feels well enough to leave the ship. Going the better part of a week without sleep means he’s spent most of his time trying to catch up and being unconscious also comes with the bonus of not having to think about any of the previous week’s events. By the time he sets foot on planet, he feels slightly better than death, which is a marked improvement from before. He still doesn’t know what caused his hallucinations, if they were indeed hallucinations. He still has no explanation for the bruises on his neck. But there haven’t been any more incidents, they’re on a resort planet, and Zam can think of no better place to aggressively try and forget his woes.
Starting modestly, of course. He still doesn’t have the energy for any of the more active pursuits offered by the planet, but fortunately, there is a beach, beaches have sunlight, and sunlight is good for lazing around in. People will be able to find him on a beach chair on the sand, wearing a tank top and swim shorts he got with his rank rewards. There’s an unclaimed chair next to him if anyone else is interested taking in the sun as well.]
ii. a weapon of massive consumption
[Eventually, Zam feels well enough to try something a little more active: namely, deciding to see if that card from the captains really does carry unlimited credits. He’s rather disappointed to find that there’s a planetary embargo on weapon sales, but he quickly finds other commodities to occupy his attention and his spending. Currently, you can find him at one of the planet’s many department stores, messing with the holographic clothing display. However, you’ll notice that it’s not just his clothes that are changing in the reflection. Every once and awhile, his face will change as well, to that of a vaguely related-looking woman. He clearly doesn’t see anything strange about this and will ignore stares from most passersby. If that staring passerby happens to be wearing a MID, however...]
It’s nice, isn’t it? [He’ll turn to meet your stare head-on, a wry smile on his face (either of them). And then:] Do you normally watch people while they’re changing?
ii
「
Perhaps if people changing shape were normal I would not.」[ The fact that Zam is an unfamiliar species just makes him more curious. ]
no subject
You’re new here. [It isn’t a question.] Don’t worry; you’ll find plenty of people here much stranger than me. Give it a couple of days.
no subject
And what sort of people is that?」[ He wonders if the rest of his species can change like that. Must be hard to keep track of who is who if everyone could change their face.
It must be painfully obvious that they are new, but he doesn't care. He's not sure what the other would mean by stranger. In his world he is the strange one, a peaceful, even helpful blueskin drifter. ]
「
Is it something I should worry over?」no subject
No, not really. Given how we come across new crew, it would be stranger if we weren’t strange.[An amused smile at his own confusing wording.] You pull people in from different galaxies and different versions of galaxies, you’re going to get some quirks.
no subject
「
Changelings.
」Is that what your species is called?
[ He assumes the other is referring to the portal through which he'd stumbled from Central Town to the Moira. Not unlike a warp pad, but he'd been unable to return for some reason. Drifter can only presume that a galaxy is like a country, or a world, but... ]
「
Different versions?」no subject
Different versions. Like a copy of your home, but not an exact copy. [A shrug.] I don’t know how it works. But the different versions do exist. We saw a few, before we came here… [He trails off, expression looking rather sour.] It’s how you end up with multiple versions of the same person on the ship.
[A slight smile.] Like I said: stranger people than me.
i
Zaaaaam...
no subject
Riptide. Welcome back to the land of the living.
no subject
[he groans a little louder.]
Zaaaam... you were right.

[he draws his arms up to cross them under his chin, bringing up a load of sand in the process.]
no subject
Why antagonize him anyway? Guy like that, you’d have to know how he’d react.
no subject
I don't know. You know when you do something really stupid but can't stop? It was like that, only I almost got someone killed.

So perhaps it could be forgiven if she didn't realize that Wessell was a shapeshifter in addition to a bounty hunter.
She has the good grace to look a bit embarrassed at the man's words and turns back to her own hologram, but not before speaking.]
My apologies. You looked like someone I know.
no subject
I am someone you know.
[He’s teasing, taking some of the bite out of his pointed question from before. Humans and non-shapeshifters in general can be strange about Zam’s abilities. Provided they’re merely inexperienced and not actively malicious, Zam’s willing to take it lightly.]
no subject
Zam! I didn't realize--it's good to see you. [A smile, pleasant.] How have you been?
no subject
Alright, [Zam lies, easily. If Leia’s asking that question with such a genuine smile, there’s a good chance she had missed Zam’s network post from a couple of weeks earlier.] Retail therapy’s not hurting either. Personally, I’m taking the “infinite credit balance” on those cards as a challenge. [A crooked smile.] How about you?
i.
though less obviousconcern. no danger from this sun, though, except the usual type, so hands Zam a cheerfully magenta glass of what is hopefully some kind of fruit juice, drapes their sarong over the chair to take the bite off, and leans back next to him.]Always suspected you were solar-powered. [pats his hand, their own chilled by the condensation from the other glass. he looks like hell and it's good to have him back.]
no subject
I wish. Give me a few hours on this planet and I’d be good as new. [Which isn’t to say that the sun isn’t helping; if he’s going to be an exhausted mess, better that it be somewhere warm. He scoots his hand closer to Bel’s.]
So on a scale of one to ten, how much of an idiot did I make of myself on the network?
no subject
[curls hand around Zam's, resting his arm along their own on the arms of the chairs. hope you don't need that back any time soon.~]
You'll get your hours, though, and then some. Sounds like we're staying for a while.
[wonders how he feels, how much he remembers... thankfully there's no Jango anywhere on the list of new arrivals. safe, more or less, for another month.]
no subject
Infinite credits, a resort planet, and a ship with medical facilities that can bring people back from the dead. Don’t see why we don’t just stay here forever. [It’s half-joke, half-wishful thinking. Everyone else is so preoccupied with going home, it’s not like the idea would gain much traction if it were serious. But Zam’s tired and after everything that had happened in the past month? Going home is the last thing he wants to think about.]
no subject
If I could bring everyone I know here.... [wistful sigh] Or the medical tech back there, I suppose. You still haven't seen a real Betan resort.
no subject
And I probably won’t given what happened to that reverse Ingress. [It’s likely for the best, given how dangerous it ended up being. He sighs, then turns his head towards Bel with a smile.] But you can still tell me about them.
no subject
noncommittal hm at the memory -- that gang they ran into certainly hadn't been prowling for the betterment of humankind. a glint of the eye, though, at Zam's smile.] I surely could. But there's no substitute for showing you.
By the way... have you talked with Miles recently? [because there was this bright idea they'd been discussing....] I know he can be... hard to catch.
