[ YEAH, NAH, sorry Clara
He stops while she stoops for the shell, trying to decide how to (apparently) let her down easily. ]
Look, I appreciate the offer - I know I don't exactly seem like the type, but I've kind of got a committed thing back home, so...
[ Clearly they are NOT on the same page, but at least his intentions are confirmed to be pure ]
no subject
What, and I seem like the type to invite strangers back to my room with me?
[Nope, she's still offended. So she marches her way over to him, shell in hand, and uses it to poke at him as she speaks and addresses the issue.]
I never have and never will be interested in people who make lei jokes. I was going to treat you to a drink as a thank you for making sure I got back to the hotel safely!
[And smuggling shells, but now she's too cross and sassy to think about picking anymore up.]
no subject
[ What kind of life did he lead back home? Probably the kind where the women he meets do EXACTLY the "inviting strangers back their room" thing. ]
—In my defense, you did invite me back to your room as official seashell liaison. [ He doesn't actually sound offended, just amused, as he lifts both hands to defend himself from a BRUTAL SEASHELL STABBING. ] And you made the lei joke too! I won't stand to have my legendary sense of humor slandered this violently.
no subject
Oh, I'm taking you back with me. And instead of a drink, I'm making you listen to all of my most recent traveling companion's worst jokes and anecdotes.
[Actually, she's not sure if she can put herself through that sort of punishment and torture. If she wouldn't be able to get through it, there's no hope that a man would.]
And for the record? [Still with her pout intact, she rises up on her tiptoes so she can try to whisper right into his face,] I never invited you into my room. I said I'd make it worth your while, and -
[Oh. Suddenly, everything makes sense as she realizes a very important detail. Her nose wrinkles up as she pulls a welp face. He's American. She's seen the Bachelor, she knows how things over there works.]
Suppose that would sound like a proposition. To some people.
no subject
Right, see. [ He's totally free of reproach here, as far as he's concerned. Any sane person would've taken it that way! ]
So, where were we? Seashells and drinks? Let's just roll it back to that.
no subject
I know it's a bit fanciful, picking up seashells. But I like keeping things from the planets I visit.
[She can at least explain to him that she's not some simple strange woman who has a fondness for shells.]
no subject
[ It's sort of endearing in a way, actually. For a moment he wonders what Pepper would think of a necklace strung with the seashells of an alien shoreline, but waves the thought away almost immediately. Still no time for sentimentality. ]
There's one just to your left, by the way.
no subject
You said you had someone back home. You should try to bring them back a couple. They're a little different than shells back on Earth, if that's what planet you're from.
no subject
[ He holds his hands out for the shells, then carefully pockets them, apparently entirely unconcerned with getting sand and grit inside what are probably tailored pants. ]
She'd probably think I'd been replaced by a brain slug if I did. That'd be an awkward conversation.
[ Still, despite his words, he's giving the shells an appraising look, and points out any that seem particularly large or intact so that she can scoop them up. ]
no subject
[She quirks an eyebrow in the middle of stopping to pick up a shell, glancing up at him with great curiosity.]
Are you usually not thoughtful?
[She picks up the shell he's just pointed out, and takes a moment to dust it off before holding it up to look it over. It's bigger than the others so far, and is shaped so it sounds like the ocean when she holds it up to her ear.]
no subject
[ Tone light, as he idly runs his fingers over one of the shells in his pocket. ]
... But I could maybe use some improvement. [ A little. Like- 12% of an improvement. ]
no subject
[Smirking, she pats him on the arm as she walks past. She doesn't hold it against him for not being thoughtful with whoever it was he was with. ]
Lucky for the both of you, it can be endearing if you play it properly.
no subject
[ ... Is he joking... is he serious... it's just not clear. ]
This companion of yours the same guy whose jokes you go around threatening to weaponize?
no subject
[Smirking as she says it, she gives a light shrug of her shoulders.]
I was hoping he'd turn up here by now, but it looks like I'm stuck exploring a vacation planet all by my lonesome.
[Which really isn't too much trouble, since it's enabled her to meet people like Tony.]
no subject
[ But he doesn't manage to even pretend to sound offended, really. ]
I think I know what you're getting at, though. [ Honestly, he thinks he'd be happier seeing less people from home, himself, or at least some of the people he actually wants to see. But he couldn't wish them here in good conscience, anyway. ] You never know! It seems like they scoop people up pretty regularly if they have "welcome to space, here's how alternate universes work" pamphlets ready to go.
no subject
[Done gathering shells for now, she glances up at Tony with a sad smile.]
He doesn't handle being trapped well, especially not in spaceships that aren't his own. He'd likely blow us all up tinkering on something.
[And she really doesn't like the idea of that. Besides, she's enjoying getting a chance to meet all kinds of people here. So while she misses the Doctor, it's not a big deal that he's not around.]
no subject
[ But he pauses to consider something in her words - actually stops walking for a second, giving her an appraising look. ]
But—wait. His own spaceship? Earlier you said you liked to pick up things from every planet you visit, so is that how...?
[ He'd just assumed she was referring to whatever ridiculous jaunts the Moira gets up to, but now that the tide of conversation has brought them this far, he understands that she's just as new here as he is. That can't possibly be what she was referring to. ]
no subject
We traveled all across the galaxy, the Doctor and I. I was caught up someplace I shouldn't be, and wound up here a few days ago.
[She likes to think she's well adjusted because of all that she's seen and done but she knows that deep down, she's sad over the loss of her freedom to go where she wants, when she wants. She misses the Doctor, misses her room on the TARDIS, even though she hardly stays there. Everything here is new and different, and there's so many people all over the place she doesn't get the privacy she wants.]
I want to like it here, and to enjoy the experience, but it's hard. What I'm used to, coming to this, it's an adventure but one that I can't control.
