[But since she's already said that she's not from Earth, she doesn't elaborate any further than that, and just keeps on looking at the map instead. There's plenty of things to see, and she's trying to commit as much as possible to memory. Eventually though, she pulls away, so she can properly introduce herself.]
My name's Clara, though. Clara Oswald. What about you?
no subject
[Plus the planet they went to last month had a thing that involved whole mess of alternate universes. She's picked up on some of the basics of parallel universes - it'd be hard not to.
Mostly, though, she was just asking to double-check that they weren't from the same world. If she had been, then giving out her name might be a bit of an issue.]
Robin. Nico Robin. I'm the ship's Historian, did anyone tell you what your job will be yet?
no subject
[She says it with a hint of displeasure, her nose wrinkling up to further show that she's not exactly fond of the idea of being a gardener. It's not that she thinks the work's beneath her, but that she doesn't think she'll do a good job of keeping anything green alive. The houseplants in her flat are all dead and forgotten.]
no subject
[Which, while a fair criticism of the ship's leadership, is also pretty understandable. They don't exactly know the people who show up, so is it really fair to expect them to be perfect at assigning jobs before they get the chance to?]
When I first showed up, they made me an assistant barista. [The look on Robin's face makes it clear that she wasn't exactly pleased by her placement either. She looks pretty offended by it, honestly, even if she did end up meeting Allison because of it.] I had to tell them to change my job.
[It might be surprising that they actually agreed to it, given her young age, but Robin is convinced that it's the job on board that she deserves.]
no subject
Which one of the captains did you talk to about the issue? I'll need to pop by and see them as soon as possible.
no subject
But the whole thing felt like busywork to her - a menial, unnecessary job that they gave to her because she was a child, and that wasn't really something Robin could put up with forever.]
I didn't talk to any of them directly about it. Once a month, you can fill out a form to get your job changed.
[Technically it's supposed to be a request form, but to Robin it had been a formality more than anything. There's no way she was going to continue being an assistant barista, no matter what their answer had been.]
I don't think they're accepting job changes right now, but you're new and we just docked on a new planet. You can get away with just not doing any gardening until then.
[Besides, there are other gardeners. Robin's not exactly worried that all the plants in there will wither away in two weeks.]
no subject
[She files away the fact that she'll have a chance to put in an official request at some point, but she fully intends on seeking out at least one of the captains at some point in the next few days. She's too proactive to just sit and wait for an opening that happens once a month.]
What does being the ship's Historian involve, exactly?
no subject
[Because Robin still doesn't trust him. She probably never will, either.
As to Clara's other question, Robin lets out a small sigh.]
...supposedly the Captains showed up the same way we did, before anyone else. And when they did, they found this place [she gestures at the ship around them] completely empty.
This whole ship is big and mysterious - there are doors we can't open, and can't get behind through other means. We don't know a lot about its past - and the Captains say they don't - so it's my job to find out what I can about it, and about the places we visit.
no subject
Oh, don't worry. I'm not going to trust anything they have to say. Anyone who's partially responsible for a mass kidnapping can't be trustworthy.
[She still fully intends on seeking Than out, though. There's a network she can access over her MID, it will make contacting him a bit easier.]
Do you know if the Captains can access the points that are locked?
no subject
[People in power, in Robin's opinion, are generally not to be trusted. The Captain's power on this ship might be pretty arbitrary in a lot of ways, but it's hard not to think of them as jailers, and worry about what they might do if that power becomes threatened.]
Probably some of them. There are others that are locked in... weird ways. Like there's nothing behind them - not even people with powers can get through.
[Which is weird because ordinarily a door means very little to her. It's like there's nothing on the other side at all.]
no subject
[She repeats it, very much so in a way that suggests she's going to look into it. Hearing about it from someone is fine, but she wants to see this for herself.]
And what sort of powers do you mean, when you say people with powers?
[Where she's from on Earth, no one has powers. But now that she's travelled all over, she knows that some people from other planets do. So it's not a strange concept to her, but it's something she wants to inform herself about if she's going to be sticking around for a while.]
no subject
[The possibility that the door isn't really what worries her, though.]
It's not just that, though. I... [She lets out a sigh and looks at Clara.]
I'm going to show you something, but you have to promise not to yell, okay?
no subject
Go on then, show me. I won't yell.
[She puts her hand over her heart, looking completely serious.]
Promise.
cw: Robin's weird superpowers (minor body horror, weird eye stuff)
I have a power too.
[Rather than explain, Robin's found that it's usually better to just... demonstrate first. She focuses for a moment and points a little further down the hallway.
There, out of the floor and the walls, human arms begin to sprout - maybe 10 or 15 of them in total. They're small and identical - perfect replicas of Robin's right arm - all disembodied and seemingly moving on their own.]
...I ate a Devil Fruit, and now I can grow parts of my body wherever I want.
[As if to punctuate that point, the skin on some of the arms seems to just... open up like an eyelid, revealing a brown eye, identical to either of Robin's. The eyes all blink and look around independent of one another.]
But there are doors on this ship where I can't do that. I can't grow anything behind them, and I can't see back there. It's like there's no surfaces at all - not even the other side of the door.
But that doesn't make sense, does it? Like I said, they're really strange.
[Of course, the doors aren't the only thing that's strange, but Robin already knows that about her powers.]
no subject
Robin is young, but apparently very powerful. It reminds her of Merry on Akhaten, a girl older than Robin, but who had so much power for such a young age. She feels a surge of protectiveness then, an instinct that tells her that she has to watch out for this girl.]
The doors could simply have a barrier. I've been on a ship with doors just like it. They seem to go nowhere, but the truth is there's things you never thought possible lying beyond them.
[She offers it as a suggestion, showing now real reaction to the various hands and eyes. She talks like they're normal, which she's assuming for Robin, they are. So she smiles, and resists the urge to walk over and poke at the various hands. She doesn't imagine that would go over well.]
But we could try again, at different times of day. Under different circumstances, it may work. We just have to keep track of what points we try to access, and when.
no subject
There are plenty of times she'd find it funny, were that to happen - but not now, when she's trying to convey a point.]
Could be, but that's not how it's supposed to work.
[Not unless the surface isn't solid, or its underwater. To reiterate: It's weird to her.
When she says that, and Clara apparently pays little heed to the arms and eyes, gestures at them briefly and they all vanish - leaving behind only a few traces of peach blossoms in her wake.]
I can try that, yeah. I don't know that it'll change anything, though.
[A pause.
There are other doors, though, that are just locked with regular locks - they aren't all like that. If we find one of those, I can look inside with no problem.
no subject
[Smiling, Clara reaches up and lightly touches the top of Robin's head. Not wanting to come across as if she's coddling when she's not intending to, she holds out her hand, like they're about to shake on a deal.]
We can meet daily, see what new things on the ship we can find. We'll keep notes on our findings, and see if anything important comes up. And if not, at least we can know that we tried to find out information the captains won't readily give us.
