August Event Log: Part I

Who: Everyone
When: August 9 and onward
Where: An unexpected destination
What: The newcomers go on a trip and end up far from where they expected
Warnings: Potential violence. Please label your content!

NOTE: PLEASE READ THIS OOC POST FIRST.
When the time comes for the travelers to go on the off-world trip that will help restore Thisavrou, they are not alone. Others who have settled on the planets longer and come to call them home are also prepared to travel; through the Ingress and do their part. Yet when the newcomers step through, whether they stepped through the Ingress seconds or hours apart, they will find that they have arrived at the same time, and only newcomers are in sight.

What awaits them is not a land of plenty. The land is barren, and dark storms in the sky resemble those held at bay by the Ingress complex—but much, much closer. Those who traveled on the Moira may recognize the landscape; though they have come through at a different point from the crash, they are on the Midway Hub. And there is no portal back. They are trapped.

hitting the road

Though some have been here before, the Midway Hub is not as they remember it. The storms fill the sky, leaving it dark and ominous even when they are not sweeping across the landscape—but they have clearly done so in recent times, and often. While never a lush land, large patches of ground an acre or more wide looking nothing more than utterly dead; the thistle that naturally grows is brittle, black and unable to be consumed even with the usual preparations to make it edible, and here and there animal corpses are found twisted into unnatural poses, but seemingly uninjured. These places are particularly concentrated near the broken Ingresses litter the landscape. While Midway Hub as a whole may seem naturally arid, these dead spots leave no hope that anything can possibly live there again.

The travelers have two options: stay where they are, or move on. While it might seem that they've been tricked into coming here and been left abandoned, those with the technological ability to do so may detect a sign of hope: a familiar energy source, far in the distance. Although none of the Ingresses they pass will ever work again, the faint energy shows that one still-functioning Ingress lies far in the distance, days away.

Although technological scanning or impressive memory of the landscape indicates that they are not separated from their destination by one of the gates that divide the land, they are also far from the shelter of the facility at the center of the Hub. Any attempt to travel in a direction other than that of the energy signal will result in a strange disorientation after several hours, bringing individuals back to their original path as though they've gone in circles. Meanwhile, though travelers will feel the need to slake their hunger and thirst through any natural water sources they discover, wildlife they can hunt for food and any supplies they have on them, if they don't find sustenance, they'll find that they will never pass out or reach the point of starvation. Instead, they'll be left alive and awake but feeling utterly hollow.

storm front

At regular intervals, the energy storms above descend onto the land, bringing not rain but violent clashes of negative energy and thunder so loud that nothing can be heard above it. The passing of the storms leaves some strange effects. The ground is warped and rotted by their touch, even solid stone degrading to a spongy surface. The air is tepid and oddly charged. Prolonged contact with air or ground will not supply energy, however — it drains it from organic and synthetic life alike.

Those who remember their last trip to the Hub, or simply explore in the right direction, may come across the cave complexes with their glowing surfaces and streams. The light is dimmer now, a sickly green, but drinking from the streams will still restore the energy lost, for a time. This time, however, the lethargy that inevitably follows is much more severe, and the drinkers are left with a raw, empty feeling leeching in from the wasteland around.

Those who are exposed to the storms, either by finding themselves in very close proximity or even closely observing them for too long as they approach, may lose their sight, or hearing, even much of the ability to feel touch — whatever sense they used in observation. What lingers in its place is a numbness. A hunger. And as time passes, the time between storms decreases; what seemed like hours between the storms becomes scarcely one, and their intensity grows.

wild life

Sentient beings are not the only ones affected by the storms; these creatures, attracted to sound and able to track by scent, and these panthers, which once looked normal but have been twisted by the storms into more monstrous forms, are numerous enough that travelers must be constantly alert for their presence. Though natural predators, the threat the creatures represent is not itself natural. They are also more aggressive. Some strange instinct drives them, not a need for food. While the panthers themselves can be caught and their meat cooked, it has little taste, offering nutrition but not satisfaction.

old familiar places

Although it's difficult to track the passage of time without day-night cycles, after what seems like more than a week of the travelers' unexpected trip, the storms abruptly come rushing in at the group of travelers, as if they're herding the group to move faster toward their destination and the Ingress energy that awaits them. The true nature of that destination becomes clear when debris appears on the horizon; the energy comes from the wreckage of the Moira, the interstellar ship that crashed here months ago.

Despite the trauma of impact, large sections of the ship remain surprisingly intact, though few of them are properly vertically oriented. If travelers are able to make their way inside the damaged sections of the ship, they'll find familiar territory, if they are one of those who traveled on the Moira, as well as shelter—something that's increasingly necessary as the storms seem to center over the ship, leaving little hope for survival outside. Useful items may be scavenged from the ship if they are willing to explore, but no personal items of any kind remain.

Strangely, the deeper travelers go into the crashed ship, the less familiar their surroundings will seem, regardless of their orientation. The inward-leading paths into the ship become generic metal, and as with the travel on the surface of the planet, they may find themselves back where they started. And no matter how far they go or how hard they try, they will find themselves unable to make it to the Ingress chamber itself...for now.

[The Exo raises his hands- well, hand and gun since he's holding his handcannon in one.]

Whoa, easy! Was just poking around, same as you.

[Hovering at his shoulder, the Hunter's Ghost moves in front of him just slightly, almost in defense. But at least it's polite.]

Apologies if we've startled you.

[It hesitates, the singular blue lens that seems to be something of an eye twitching just slightly as though to look past her before floating back and closer to Cayde again.]

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2017-08-14 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
[Alright, well, points awarded for having a gun in his hand and not shooting her. Elizabeth takes in the strange floating and talking robot-looking creature.]

There's nothing to see here, keep moving. [She doesn't seem to be following her own advice though. After what she just saw here, there's no way she's going to just leave it there.]
deal_me_in: (I did a lot of shooting that day)

[personal profile] deal_me_in 2017-08-14 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
[Cayde lowers his gun, making a sound that resembles a snort despite his likely lack of actual lungs and a respiratory system. He gestures vaguely with his other hand.]

Nothin' to see, period. I think that storm screwed something up, visuals fade in and out.

[The Ghost turns back towards its Guardian, vertices swiveling slightly.]

I've been supplementing in the meantime. Thought we heard something this way, which is why we came to check...

-say, when she said that, did she try waving her hand or fingers a little-

...no Cayde, she didn't appear to be attempting to 'mind-trick.'

Oh. Just thought I'd ask.

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2017-08-14 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
['Mind trick'? What the hell..]

Wait, you're wandering around these ruins blind? [That would be fantastic if that were true. It sounds like the small flying robot is seeing for him, or listening for him?] That's insane, it's practically a death-trap in here.
deal_me_in: (This is my serious face)

[personal profile] deal_me_in 2017-08-14 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
Partially! It comes and goes. What, you expect me to sit around? Who knows how long we'll be stuck here.

Especially considering that there seems to be some sort of...spacial anomaly. It won't allow us to proceed past a certain area within this ship, which seems to be where we need to go if the readings for an Ingress that I've been tracking are correct.
tearmeanewone: (095)

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2017-08-14 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Spacial anomaly. [She chews on that for a second.] Would explain some things I've been working against too. [Namely: why there were areas just dead-- no tears. No place ever experienced a lack of constants or variables, it just didn't happen.]

Funny we were drawn here, and then the thing we're being drawn to we can't even get to. Typical for this week.

[She sighs and looks back at the spot where the tear had formed. She'll have to get back to this later.] Maybe we can move around the anomaly. Maybe the easiest ways through are covered, but the less-convenient ones might circumvent it.

I'd hate to think that we just walked across a wasteland for nothing. But I guess there are worse places to be, out here.

But you may be on to something. Worth a shot, at least.

[Cayde pauses.]

You one of those who were on this ship before?
tearmeanewone: (082)

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2017-08-14 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Better than the caves. At least this place doesn't seem to have... unpleasant natives housed in it. [She's of course referring to those human-shaped beings with the jaws for a face. There were sketches in her journal of them from the last time the crew passed through here, and Elizabeth is fairly sure she doesn't want to re-acquaint herself with them.]

Yes and no. [Elizabeth sighs and comes down the stairs.] I was the first mate, right up until she crashed here. All of that knowledge would sure be handy right about now, except I had a brush with some Ingress energy that wiped most of my memories from the ship and the Midway Hub. ...Truth be told, I would have looked for the Ingress first if I hadn't been spending time trying to find remnants of whatever happened to me here.

There are blueprints of the ship in the Moira's collection. [Back to what's pertinent.] We're going to need a bigger space if I'm going to unpack it. I've been trying to find where the library originally was, that's probably as big a space as any.

Lady, this whole world is unpleasant.

[For all that his sight's not at 100%, he still exchanges a glance with the Ghost at that bit of info that Elizabeth follows up with.]

Huh. Well that's inconvenient. Pity, too. That's the first I've heard about memories being threatened by Ingress exposure.

[Cayde does not sound very happy at the possibility. He's quite possessive about his memories.]

Guess I can't fault you for that, though. And given that no one probably ever thought to ever come back here again, I don't blame you for trying to work out the things you lost.

[The Ghost's angles shift about in something of a curious gesture.]

Blueprints would be extremely helpful. The ship is certainly sizable, so knowing where things are or at least should be would help cut down on potential places to explore.

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2017-08-14 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Gosh, tell me to sit down first before you deal such a verbal blow. [The sarcasm is strong with this one. 'This whole world is unpleasant', what an understatement. Was any world pleasant? She really can't name a single one-- Columbia, Rapture, Barrayar, Sokovia, they all seemed like a mess.]

[Elizabeth doesn't quite expect anyone to understand why she's roaming the remains of the ship when they don't know that she can actually see places she's had strong feelings in, or made choices, or just spent a lot of time at. So the lack of criticism at her wanderings is unexpected... but kind of nice. She even nods a little bit.]

Alright, then let's see if we can't at least find a cargo bay or, ideally, the library. [She says, moving to exit the observation deck with this odd metal-faced man and his floating companion.]

...and I wouldn't worry too much about Ingress exposure. [Elizabeth says awkwardly.] There was more to it. Freak accident. It'll probably never happen again. [Not if she keeps her tears under control, at least.]
deal_me_in: (I did a lot of shooting that day)

[personal profile] deal_me_in 2017-08-14 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[The Exo actually seems to smirk at her response. If you can still manage to be sarcastic and hold some humor in spite of such a situation, then you're good in his book. As for unpleasant places, he can add plenty more to that list.]

After you, then. Latter might be easier than the former, but I guess we'll see. Ghost-

[With a sound in compliance, the little AI floats towards Cayde and then vanishes into him with a brief glimmer of light.]

Um. Easier navigating with his scans, this way.

And I hope you're right about the Ingress energy thing. I like keeping what I have of my memories right where they are.
tearmeanewone: (001)

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2017-08-14 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[She may be frigid and depressed, but at least she has sarcasm, and that will get her through just about anything for the moment. It's getting too familiar though, like how she felt in Rapture.]

[But that can wait, because that floating thing just disappeared into that guy, and Elizabeth stops to stare. That's a first.]

...Whatever you say, pal. [She takes point, though-- scans or no scans, she has fully functioning eyeballs.]

Trust me-- even though we just met. [At least she's acknowledging it's a tall order.] I'm a quantum physicist. [Of sorts.] What interacted with the Ingress in my case was the catalyst, that's not going to happen again because that catalyst doesn't function anymore.
deal_me_in: (We were in a meeting about something)

[personal profile] deal_me_in 2017-08-14 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's not an uncommon trick for a Guardian and a Ghost. When your Ghost is the only thing that can bring you back after you've suffered a fatal wound, it's far preferable to keep it close and safe, being the far more vulnerable of the pair.]

Ooh, quantum physics! Yeah, I've worked with scientists, but mostly for guard duty. But that's good to know. Erm, that it won't happen. Not that that doesn't bring up more questions and curiosities, but I'd say we have enough of the latter, and I won't pry.
tearmeanewone: (090)

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2017-08-15 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
[Yikes, that was close. Elizabeth almost had to dodge a hell of a lot more questions if this guy turned out to actually be a scientist too. But guards-- that was safe, probably.]

That's surprising. Seems like all anybody does in this place is ask questions that most people don't want to answer. Or in this case, questions I can't really answer.

[Not an explicit lie-- all she knows is what Badou told her: she formed a tear and the Ingress held it open. She probably was hit with a rebound of energy when she forced the tear shut. Probably. It's a hypothesis.] Hard to tell people what happened to me when all I have is a second-hand account.
deal_me_in: (That's good right?)

[personal profile] deal_me_in 2017-08-15 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
[His stint as a guard is something he glosses over without any attachment, mostly because he wants to avoid further questions in that. True enough he only remembers so much from then, but it's nothing he wants to share, especially not with someone he hardly knows.]

Oh, I'm not saying I wouldn't like to ask questions, but yeah, usually if you ask a question, you get asked questions back. That and questions have this nasty habit of exploding like rabbit populations.

[Although if she offers her own explanations on things and they happen to answer questions he might have thought to ask, he won't be against it.]

Understandable.

[Sounds like he means it too.]

-okay, I do have to ask one question just so it won't be so awkward, but what should I call you?
tearmeanewone: (022)

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2017-08-17 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[Right-- they'd missed that part when he'd walked in on an image of Elizabeth sucking the lips off of some Russian guy. Whoops. She laughs a little.] Right. Elizabeth. I'm Elizabeth DeWitt. What about you?

Ha, see? Ask a question, you get asked questions back.
deal_me_in: (I did a lot of shooting that day)

[personal profile] deal_me_in 2017-08-17 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
And here come the rabbits.

[The Exo chuckles dryly.]

Name's Cayde. And this is my Ghost.
tearmeanewone: (059)

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2017-08-18 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
I promise I won't feed them too much.

Nice to meet you Cayde. There's a step here. [He seems to have done just fine up until this point, but hey, never hurts to be sure someone isn't going to fall on their face.] 'Ghost' sounds like a pretty apt name, it seems to follow you close.
deal_me_in: (That's good right?)

[personal profile] deal_me_in 2017-08-18 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
[He nods, taking care in minding where he walks, figuring it's easier to be appreciative than be annoyed and then trip and fall and be embarrassed to boot.]

Same. Too bad it's under the given circumstances, but eh, what can we do.

But yeah, Ghost is fitting, all right. Best partner a Guardian can have.
tearmeanewone: (092)

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2017-08-22 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's a good call-- because Elizabeth would judge him so hard if that happened. Also sigh and wonder why everyone insisted on ignoring her.]

Hm. [She takes a moment. This is where a question would go, but she's already said she won't ask too many. Well, there's more than one way to carry on a conversation, she can manage this. Might even be fun.]

So it scans things for you, seems to analyze things too... Probably fits with whatever it is a 'Guardian' in your timeline does.
deal_me_in: (I did a lot of shooting that day)

[personal profile] deal_me_in 2017-08-23 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
[That's the trouble with questions, they like sneaking themselves in and all too easily if you're not paying attention. Truthfully Cayde wouldn't mind too much in answering if it were directly asked of him, although it does get a little tiring and repetitive.]

Well.

I wouldn't be a Guardian without 'im. But I guess anything's better than being dead, and I'm certainly not complaining.
tearmeanewone: (090)

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2017-08-25 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about that, jury's out as far as I'm concerned. [Apparently they need to form a club, though.]

I was well on my way to dying at the very least, and then I ended up here. Unfamiliar place, no real idea of what I'm supposed to be doing here, and a group of people that marginalizes another because they can. Deja vu all over again.
deal_me_in: (This is my serious face)

[personal profile] deal_me_in 2017-08-26 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, believe me. Dying's not fun, 'specially after a few times.

[He comments offhandedly as they carefully pick their way onward.]

Haven't been in any immediate situations where dying seemed to be in the near future last place I was, but other than that, I can relate with the whole deja vu thing. Which only tells me things can potentially get ugly. Or uglier. This mess already looks pretty bad.
tearmeanewone: (042)

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2017-08-28 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
And I suppose you've done that, so you would know what it's like. [She arches an eyebrow and smirks faintly. Not unheard of, and Elizabeth is starting to wonder if this guy doesn't just have a metal face, but a metal everything.]

If we don't find a way off of this planet, I don't see how we'll survive. Most of us came for a mission to a reportedly 'nice place', not all of us are as paranoid as I am. Supplies are no doubt low, morale will flag, people will panic.
deal_me_in: (That moment when you think...)

[personal profile] deal_me_in 2017-08-28 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Been a long time since, but uh...yeah. I've had my share of experiences.

[Not that his being basically a robotic form now had anything to do with it.]

I'm sure we're not far from the panicking part. Bar was set pretty low the moment we got Ingress'd. But this place in general doesn't strike me as survivable.

...I don't think anything's meant to survive out here, especially with whatever's happened. From other people I've talked to, things weren't quite the same, last time they'd visited the Hub.
