August Event Log: Part I
When: August 9 and onward
Where: An unexpected destination
What: The newcomers go on a trip and end up far from where they expected
Warnings: Potential violence. Please label your content!
NOTE: PLEASE READ THIS OOC POST FIRST.
What awaits them is not a land of plenty. The land is barren, and dark storms in the sky resemble those held at bay by the Ingress complex—but much, much closer. Those who traveled on the Moira may recognize the landscape; though they have come through at a different point from the crash, they are on the Midway Hub. And there is no portal back. They are trapped.

hitting the road
The travelers have two options: stay where they are, or move on. While it might seem that they've been tricked into coming here and been left abandoned, those with the technological ability to do so may detect a sign of hope: a familiar energy source, far in the distance. Although none of the Ingresses they pass will ever work again, the faint energy shows that one still-functioning Ingress lies far in the distance, days away.
Although technological scanning or impressive memory of the landscape indicates that they are not separated from their destination by one of the gates that divide the land, they are also far from the shelter of the facility at the center of the Hub. Any attempt to travel in a direction other than that of the energy signal will result in a strange disorientation after several hours, bringing individuals back to their original path as though they've gone in circles. Meanwhile, though travelers will feel the need to slake their hunger and thirst through any natural water sources they discover, wildlife they can hunt for food and any supplies they have on them, if they don't find sustenance, they'll find that they will never pass out or reach the point of starvation. Instead, they'll be left alive and awake but feeling utterly hollow.
storm front
Those who remember their last trip to the Hub, or simply explore in the right direction, may come across the cave complexes with their glowing surfaces and streams. The light is dimmer now, a sickly green, but drinking from the streams will still restore the energy lost, for a time. This time, however, the lethargy that inevitably follows is much more severe, and the drinkers are left with a raw, empty feeling leeching in from the wasteland around.
Those who are exposed to the storms, either by finding themselves in very close proximity or even closely observing them for too long as they approach, may lose their sight, or hearing, even much of the ability to feel touch — whatever sense they used in observation. What lingers in its place is a numbness. A hunger. And as time passes, the time between storms decreases; what seemed like hours between the storms becomes scarcely one, and their intensity grows.
wild life
old familiar places
Although it's difficult to track the passage of time without day-night cycles, after what seems like more than a week of the travelers' unexpected trip, the storms abruptly come rushing in at the group of travelers, as if they're herding the group to move faster toward their destination and the Ingress energy that awaits them. The true nature of that destination becomes clear when debris appears on the horizon; the energy comes from the wreckage of the Moira, the interstellar ship that crashed here months ago.

Despite the trauma of impact, large sections of the ship remain surprisingly intact, though few of them are properly vertically oriented. If travelers are able to make their way inside the damaged sections of the ship, they'll find familiar territory, if they are one of those who traveled on the Moira, as well as shelter—something that's increasingly necessary as the storms seem to center over the ship, leaving little hope for survival outside. Useful items may be scavenged from the ship if they are willing to explore, but no personal items of any kind remain.
Strangely, the deeper travelers go into the crashed ship, the less familiar their surroundings will seem, regardless of their orientation. The inward-leading paths into the ship become generic metal, and as with the travel on the surface of the planet, they may find themselves back where they started. And no matter how far they go or how hard they try, they will find themselves unable to make it to the Ingress chamber itself...for now.

"An animal, perhaps." Which wouldn't be good. The state of things out here--
Her gaze stays off for a few more seconds before she looks back down to Mei. They would at least be prepared now.
"We'll be safer here."
no subject
"Have you seen the panthers? Or panther like things, whatever they are. They look scary."
no subject
"Though numbers are advantageous." She finishes her scan before moving to take a seat, keeping her rifle close and alert.
"Hopefully none have come this close so far."
no subject
"I think if they had, we would have heard about it." She fiddles with the settings on her gun for a moment before setting in back on her utility belt. There's a pause, as she really doesn't know what else to say. Ana had always felt more warm, more approachable than Jack, yet at the same time it was clear she was a soldier and you weren't to waste her time.
After a bit of hesitation, she speaks. "It's good to see you again. I had a lot of information to catch up on, but I'd read you died. People should know better than to assume that when we disappear, right? Me, you, Jack." Probably others too. They're hard to kill.
no subject
And then she smiles. Mei's thought is kind, though there's also an added part to it -- a part that, although people should know better than to assume that she was dead that it had been what Ana had wanted them to think.
"They should, though this time they were right to." It was a story that she'd yet to tell Mei, and she didn't know exactly how much the woman knew or had had time to catch up on. "It was several years before I resurfaced, and not as myself."
Or to anyone that had known her.

( hitting the road )
Speaking of twisted, he's currently crouched down next to a corpse. Not a human one, but some kind of animal, that's been bent into an unnatural pose. Snake looks from the creature to the dead Ingress nearby, murmuring to himself.
He senses someone coming up by his shoulder and glances over to see Ana, come to check on him. The rest of the group is on the move, not that he has any plans to get left behind.
Snake stands and brushes his hands off against his thighs, shrugging as he steps back. ]
I'm no doctor, but...
[ He shakes his head. Something isn't right here. ]
no subject
( not to get a sense that something was really wrong. all of the plant life seemed dead, and the place was not hospitable looking in the slightest. ana didn't know if it had changed or not since the previous time that they had been there but it did not look good )
Was it like this before?
no subject
[ Not that the Midway Hub had ever been hospitable, but something has definitely changed in their absence. There's this sense of something being off, or wrong, that Snake can't really shake. ]
The storm probably has something to do with it, but... all of these dead animals seem to be around the Ingress units.
[ Had they traveled through, only for something to go horribly wrong? ]
no subject
They were either coming in order trying to get out. ( would they be able to tell? ) How much do you remember of this place from before?
no subject
At Ana's question, Snake glances over and shrugs. ] I lived through it. It was the better part of a year ago, but... [ It's not like he would forget. ] What do you want to know?
no subject
( details that her other storyteller might have missed or not thought important )
Jack's told me some, but there's more experiences.

It's not the end of the world, if not for the fact that they don't know if this is temporary or not, but they've dealt with such restrictions before. Jack is more than accustomed to nonverbal code, and they can communicate well enough with hand gestures and signals. It's nothing they haven't done before. Eventually, they settle on morse code. Unwieldy, sure, but their mental dictionaries of tactical signals only go so far. He taps dots and dashes on her arm, complete sentences it only takes her a moment to understand.
There's a closeness in it, one Jack can't help but value, even if the circumstances are less than ideal. They sit shoulder to shoulder, within reach in case they need to 'say' anything, while Jack cleans his gun and they otherwise take stock of their supplies. He has to take a moment to translate what she's tapping against his arm, but he's quickly shaking his head, knowing what she's implying.
I'll watch tonight.]
no subject
his response earns ana tipping her head up at him, giving him a look that says more and quicker than any tapping would. she's not happy with that answer, and she'll need convincing to relent.
I'm fine.
'fine'. nothing's happened so far, and there's always the possibility that something could catch her that she can't hear -- come up behind and avoid her warnings. but he won't be fine if he does every watch )
no subject
Sure, it might be adverse for Jack to go without sleep, but it isn’t anything he hasn’t done before, and he’s extremely loath to leave Ana alone on watch when she can’t hear anything. She says she’s fine, but of course she knows on some level that this is risky. Jack is willing to lose a little sleep if they can avoid that risk.
Something might sneak up on you.
Jack knows that she’s resourceful, and more likely than not will be able to handle herself, but he doesn’t want to take that chance.]
no subject
You still need to rest.
because if something happened to him because he was protecting her--
no. it wasn't something that ana could think of, especially not now. it was too soon from her already having lost him, and he was already one hand down.
Go. At least for a few hours.
at the very least he could be a little rested before taking over )
no subject
Though of course they both know he isn’t so good at sleeping, especially not when they’re in a precarious situation. She’s the same way, which means that the two of them are at an impasse. They’re more than close enough for Jack to reach out with his good hand, gently taking hold of her sleeve, a silent don’t go. His actual message comes a moment later, after some consideration.
You don’t have to do this.]
no subject
I do.
she would rather stay with him, have the two of them silently sat in the other's company, or both asleep, but the situation had gone wrong. it had gone to shit. again. it was just unfortunate that her loss of hearing had occurred too.
I'll get you if I see something.
even before the situation became anything. it was a promise, a concession. at least she had her darts back, though untested as they were. ana holds his gaze for a few seconds longer before pressing a light kiss to his cheek, a final tapped Go on his arm )

He is the logical choice for a scout, regardless of trustworthiness or any other potential ulterior motive.
But eventually, the group catches up to him in the rest of the charred landscape. He might have blended well were it not for the bone bleach of his mask or the silver chrome of his gauntlets and spine. Given the glowing landscape nearby, a storm had just passed over, and Reaper was set to crouching just inside of it, underneath the remains of some twisted metal object.
To untrained eyes, he is simply resting. But there is a distinct trail of smoke wafting out from under the structure. He is injured somehow, though its impossible to tell how or what had managed to get close enough.
His attention moves to Ana when she splits off from the group to inspect the scarce plantlife still nearby. As she rounds the corner, he forces himself onto his feet, though maintains his crouching position. His depth perception is presently a bit lacking, and he isn't looking to bump his head with Ana standing right there.
(If it really is Ana. Some of him feels like he might be hallucinating, after how fast that storm had moved in.)]
Hi.
[Sarcastic. Neutral enough to hide the fact that he might not recognize her.]
no subject
Gabriel.
( she's watching him careful, checking for signs of what he may do next. the smoke doesn't go unnoticed, and her gaze turns a little more scrutinous, looking for any and all of where his injuries may be )
Where's your friend?
no subject
In response to her question, he shrugs from where he is crouched.]
No idea. She can turn invisible.
[No less bitter than his usual tone of voice.]
Go ahead. Take the shot.
[He spreads his claws expectantly.]
You already got Morrison back. Bring it all home. He'd be delighted.
no subject
though what happens may also be unexpected. she shot him, yes, but ana's not trying to kill him, or even hurt him, but help him. she had a healing round in, and despite all that gabriel has done, especially with killing jack, she isn't going to take that path herself )
He wouldn't be.
( her rifle drops back to her side, ana rising from the plant she'd been crouched by. she's had this conversation recently with jack, and for all of the animosity between the two of them killing gabriel is not what jack wants. his friend, on the other hand-- )
You never lost him.
( or her. for ana it was never about choosing jack or gabriel but rather the side of the fight that they were on. she still had people to save, and that's where jack was. if the people had been on opposite sides-- if only they'd all been on the same side )
no subject
His hand over his breast clenches to a fist. First, he had been furious at witnessing her coming full circle and taking the shot. Now, he is angry for being made to look like a fool. Ana's reply leaves a bitter taste in his tongue and while she rises, he does not.]
Remorse doesn't count.
[Maybe Jack had forgotten when the world came for them, but he did not. He remembers when the governments came for Blackwatch when they didn't like his solutions, and he remembers when Jack had pulled the plug before he could finish what he had started.
And now they were here, on opposite sides. And no one held a grudge like Gabriel Reyes.]
no subject
ana wants to ask him what made him hate jack so much but she also knows that she wouldn't get the real answer, that he'd say it was overwatch or a decision. but this hate burned deeper than a job, and she'd seen that bitterness form herself. she'd held them together as much as she could, as long as she could. and then there'd been nothing, and everything had fallen )
If you believe that then you've forgotten who he is.
( who they are, but she'll fix her own relationship with gabriel later. if she can help jack and gabriel first, in some way, then that will be enough )
But I don't believe that.
( they'd spent too long together. either everything had been a lie or ana had gotten a good measure of him. gabriel wasn't a fool. not like this )
