[There's a jolt that runs through this man as he gets the ping on his MID. A hard beat of his heart that nearly hurts as he hears a voice and for a long instant he thinks that voice might be telling him that he came back, that he's actually alive and that heart-attack in the Training Sim Room didn't matter. That Solid Snake doesn't have to wear that guilt and and Kaz can finally say he's sorry. To tell him to go spend time with that asshole wildcat. Do something so his world becomes less of a disaster.]
[But he looks at the name and there's the worst mixed mess of emotions. The joy at someone he's needed around, that he's missed. And morbidly realizing that it means John is still dead and having the hope of correcting his failures sucked out of him. That there's a pile of ridiculous folded up boxes and a crate of furbies in the cargo bay still that are sans a childish dictator to own them. That peace was for nothing.]
[Snake's here, though. "Ahab." That's what matters.]
I'm moving cabins, so I'll meet you in the recreational area.
Ocelot has DD if you want him.
[Might as well let him know where the dog went to. It'll probably be hard realizing that Snake doesn't remember anything. But when is that ever new?]

It's difficult to gauge the level of Kaz's comfort with this situation over the comm, so Venom doesn't exactly mince words or attempt to strike up conversation. The reply that Kaz receives for his troubles is the same, age-old terseness, a quiet got it that lingers for a brief second before cutting to silence. Venom's preferred language.
He shows up in the recreational area minutes later, punctual and as stalwart as ever— single eye flicking through dim lighting, shoulders braced but otherwise composed. ]

[Kaz comes in adjusting the glove on his right hand, his right hand, in a uniform with a custom matching overcoat, but also still his Diamond Dogs beret. Somehow in all of his months aboard, he's refused to abandon the item. Despite everything.]
You've been gone a while. What's the last thing you remember?
[Because Kaz is dutiful as ever; temporarily he might have superior officers here, but this is his Boss. The man even John acknowledged was his only Boss now. He'll do what he needs to get him situated and comfortable. Still, he's not suspecting how out of sorts he is, and he's fortunate those glasses hide some of the weariness of very recent sleepless nights and brand new stresses.]
no subject
Well. He's been wrong before.
It takes considerable effort not to look too bemused by Kaz's collection of new limbs, to reacquaint himself with these new footsteps instead of the quiet click-shuffle of crutch-to-foot. In a way, it helps; if there'd been any doubt as to what this place is capable of, Kaz's brought himself over as irrefutable proof of the things that Venom hadn't been convinced of on paper.
Still, Venom's disorientation settles internally, imperceptible save for a slight displacement of his weight from one foot to the other. Kaz's question is an uncomfortable reminder of faulty memories, a flashback to dizzying questions in a foreign hospital room.
He pauses. Answers with a quiet mm first, appended with: ]
You first.
[ Because there's a very real possibility that Kaz doesn't know what he does, and it would be unwise to break that to him right out of the gate. ]
no subject
[Kaz fidgets with the fingers to his glove then, watching V's face, before tugging them loose gently.]
I've been here seven months. I was talked into a set of prosthetics during month two. I needed to be able to keep up, being in a subordinate position that required me to be mobile and useful. [He couldn't afford the luxury of his pride.] The commanding officers of the ship have expressed their intention to return to a location where the ship's Ingress might be repaired. I can give you a rundown of locations and potential threats as I'm aware of them.
[Hesitantly he pulls the glove off, revealing half-clear fingers, a hand that can be seen through, a pattern of color meant to mirror his left in shape. Then he reaches up with that hand to remove his sunglasses. Those glass-like irises, marred pupils, restored to normal.]
Last thing I remember from home... the words "new nation" mean anything to you?
[Kaz looks down, replaces the glasses, tries to suppress a wash of bile that roils through his gut. New nation. What a mess all of this is.]
no subject
[ No doubt Kaz has an extensive laundry list of them, meticulously detailed and ordered by urgency. It's something they still have time to discuss without getting trigger-happy with the paranoia (bad habit, Kaz), so Venom pulls up a palm in customary military fashion to gently assuage. A silent slow down.
It's also a request for Kaz to let up until Venom gets a hold on his mental bearings, especially in light of this new information about having been here before (again, that discomforting notion of not remembering). He doesn't need the weeks that he'd had in the past to adjust, those days spent on the boat from Cyprus to Afghanistan, but some breathing room would be nice.
His gaze flits across the new details that his XO's been fitted with— the new hand, the repaired vision— and he files that into the 'More Things To Think About' territory.
One at a time. ]
As for the 'new nation'— yeah. [ A brief exhale, almost a dry laugh. ] You know, then. [ About 'the truth', he means. ]
no subject
I know.
[Kaz stares at V, lower lip pushing up into the top, his mouth forming a thin line.]
Big Boss was here. I punched him. Yelled at him for it.
[So V knows that he didn't get off without being called out on it some. But he doesn't know what to follow that up with. "Yes, but we made up." "And he had to tell you in front of me and it was like a nightmare." "He's dead now. He died in front of me again." There's nothing decent he can follow that with.]
[So he doesn't. This endless font of words shuts up and waits to be asked for something. Some dutiful thing to do or else this expression will be harder to fight off.]
It's okay, Boss. [He adds. Just in case. So he doesn't doubt.] I'm still with you.
no subject
He was here.
[ Which isn't so much a question as it is a repetition made in mild disbelief, one that Venom shelves because it's so obvious. Yeah, dingus, Kaz just said that he was.
He can appreciate that the situation must have been complicated, especially if Kaz is using the past tense: "was". There's no change in expression on Venom's part once he brings himself back to neutral, save for the slight downturn of his brows that speaks to his subtle, self-contained empathy. Whatever Kaz feels about Big Boss is Kaz's private business; Venom lost his rights to pry with the cassette he was given.
Regardless, that last statement of faith prompts Venom to tip his head a millimeter in acknowledgment. ]
You're stuck with me, more like. [ Not entirely self-deprecating. It's dry, but light. ]
no subject
[As if she wants to interrupt the meaningful moment, the rust colored husky behind Kaz (the larger of two) steps around him and stares at Snake with gold-blonde eyes. And then makes a warble noise and tosses her head, a sound that couldn't even loosely be construed as a bark.]
[It's good he has the dog for moments like this, when he's torn out of an overwhelming weight and looks down at the furry nerd who just banged her head on his leg in her eagerness to get attention.]
That's Mama. She had a litter of puppies when I got her and I didn't know what else to call her. The silver one- [the 4 month old that seems like less of a laughable doof than her mother] -is one of her girls. Her name is Joy.
no subject
—Looks like you've been keeping yourself busy.
[ In a good way, because there's more to life than revenge and trying to murder your old friends for their slights. Venom's lips almost twitch up in a facsimile of a smile, one knee bending to offer his human hand to the enthusiastic husky that eagerly sniffs at his fingers.
For a guy that frequently uses his hands to kill, he's alarmingly gentle as he sifts his knuckles through his new companion's fur. ] Commanding dogs instead of soldiers?
no subject
[Snake. Snake. He will absolutely manufacture work for himself when he doesn't have enough to do.]
Didn't have a business to run. Mama's not much of a worker, though. Didn't intend her to be. Joy is. Figure... well, might as well give Ocelot a little something extra to do. She was Big Boss's... before he uh... [He doesn't want to say "died", so he doesn't. Not ready to talk about that yet. He needs to address the important stuff first. In this case, though he scowls down at the idea, Kaz is less important as a person. He needs to focus on giving Snake ship relevant information. Not dump more weight on him immediately.]
[Joy is considerably calmer than her mother, level-tempered like her namesake. Where the twins managed to pick the most combative of the puppies, John had picked this small earnest one.] He was from a different timeline I think. A few years ahead of us.
no subject
He veers between professional distance and personal affectations, considers the pros and cons of the choices he can make with respect to how best to handle this delicate situation. ]
Kaz. [ Softly, as he straightens up and gives Mama one last rub behind her ear. ] Whatever happened between you and him, you're not obligated to explain.
[ Because he is Big Boss, but he also isn't. Venom's existence in itself is akin to an invasion of Kaz's privacy, and Venom is starting to come to terms with that fact as well. ]
no subject
[He tells him not because he's obligated, but this Snake is still his friend. Despite everything, he is still his friend. And Kaz takes the opportunity to step close, until they were shoulder against shoulder.]
It's good to have you. I missed you. It might be a little selfish of me to be glad you're here, but I am.
[And when did Kazuhira Miller ever not be selfish in some small way. There's a good heart in there, somewhere. But often he does want what he wants. In this case? He just really wants his friend. That's not so bad.]
[Mama glues herself to the back of Kaz's leg, standing directly behind him as if taking some obnoxious proximity cue.]
no subject
It's alarming how easily he falls back into rhythm, even with the staggering notion of Big Boss's potential 'death' still ringing in his ears.
He mouths another Kaz, momentarily unsure of which direction to proceed— does he press the issue of his original's passing, or the fact that his XO is glad to see him? It's a hell of a dichotomy to tackle. ]
...We're gonna have to take this one at a time.
[ Finally, he settles on that. Pulls away so he can settle his palm on his fellow soldier-in-arms' shoulder, ground him with that point of contact. ] Sorry to keep you waiting.
[ Not exactly 'kept you waiting, huh?', but. You know how it is. ]
no subject
[The most John can offer is understanding that something hurts. He gave Kaz that. It wasn't an apology, but it wasn't unwanted.]
Good to be with you, Boss.
[Those words are typical of Kaz.]
[He puts his arm around Snake's midsection and hugs him to his side, a gentle squeeze, a hug with his real arm before he lets it drop. But he stays in that personal space bubble for now.] Alright, what first? [One thing at a time, right?]
no subject
First things first. He settles down on one of the chairs, immediately raising a brow when Mama takes that as an opportunity to explore his lap with excited nudges of head-to-knee. ]
Setting some facts straight. [ He breaks eye contact with Kaz to sift his fingers back through thick fur again, indulging the insistent whines for attention. ] I was here before. Anything I should know about with respect to that?
[ Another way to phrase this question is 'how many people know who I am', but he's sure Kaz can put two and two together. Especially considering that he was here when Big Boss was also around, presumably— hard to miss two identical-looking people walking around. ]
no subject
He talked about himself a lot.
[Yes, some people know.]
[He decides in his infinite wisdom to not mention the Ocelot thing. Probably for the better. It wasn't with this man, after all.]
He didn't do that much. There was a prison station that made him hallucinate. And... he tried to help me, still. Started having nightmares.
He actually showed up before he knew who he was. At the same time as Big Boss, so I confronted Big Boss and made him go talk to him. [As much as one can "make" Big Boss do anything.] DD showed up a few weeks later and that's what happened.
no subject
How many times is this going to happen? How much of himself will be left after each hard-reset?
His hand stops and rests on Mama's head, temporarily suspended mid-motion. Scarred lips knit together, expression emptying before working into something more convincingly present. ]
Right. [ If he sounds a bit more clipped, well. ] Can't help what the others already know. I'll be discreet with the rest.
no subject
[He can tell something about that hit him. The way it's clipped, the way his mouth knits, his hand pauses on the dog's head. Something about that bothered him.]
And you can say so. People can't judge you for what he's mentioned. I'll get your back.
[But he told some people himself, in his rage, in his anger, in his loss. Just a few people though. Discrete ones, some that he trusted that wouldn't wield it like daggers. But this loss happened to Venom, not him, and he has to do his best that it doesn't haunt the man more than necessary.]
Big Boss went by Ishmael and you went by Ahab. It's easy enough to choose a different name of preference.
But... There's another complication relating to that. [And he says that like he wants Snake to prepare for something else "big".]
no subject
Self-pity is unbecoming, and Venom doesn't draw on it. That's never been a priority to him, but being yanked from one trajectory to another is admittedly difficult: from 'from here on out, you are Big Boss' to 'choose a name you prefer'.
He sets that thought aside, carefully pats the dog looking inquisitively up at him to assuage her curiosity. ]
Go on.
[ Perhaps a bit frustratingly, he provides no input regarding what he's going to do about himself. But this "complication" seems more important. ]
no subject
There are two other Snakes here. Liquid and Solid. You know one, but as "Eli". They're the adult versions of the twins, from our future. Solid is actually one of my students. Almost the spitting image of John.
[He's not even used the name "John" for Big Boss in front of Ocelot. The way it was given to him, it felt like some kind of secret. But he's made a point to hide as little as possible (except for that excitable venture into restaurant chains) from this man. So he lets himself.]
That face is pretty common around these parts. You can be Venom Snake if you want. Or just another Snake. That's fine. [He reaches out and settles his hand over his forearm, letting it rest there. A fake hand, though glove covered, on another artificial arm.]
no subject
He would laugh if any part of him remembered how to do that. Instead, he turns his head to the man currently trying to comfort him with a hand to his forearm, ghost on metal. ]
This is bound to get confusing for the others.
[ AGAIN, he's not going to talk about himself, because that's still a pile of question marks that he has to sort through on his own time. Big Boss, the twins, another 'him'.
Pragmatism helps. Moving forward, that helps.
He relaxes his tight-lipped expression in increments, finally manages to properly look at Kaz with something resembling gratitude. ]
Am I gonna have to limit my interactions with the Snakes?
no subject
So when people react to their being different Snakes, it's more like you're in the same family of specialists.
[Most people seemed to understand it that way.]
I have a friend, Jim Barnes. An alternate version of himself is here. There have been several multiples. No one should react.
[When the world gets complicated, people start accepting it as generally weird and move on.]
What else can I help you with. [Give him things to do, something to explain so he feels helpful.]
no subject
It's looking like his main issue remains the all-pervasive one. It's really the only question he needed to ask, really. ]
Any progress on getting back to our world?
[ Back to base, back to their false Outer Heaven. Back to the mission. ]
no subject
We stopped at a world with an Ingress. But it was also broken. I managed to go back to Costa Rica for a while. [This was one of his more terrible decisions.] I took some reminders with me when I left. If you want to see some of them.
[A ton of terrible decisions, where he got into his own jeep for some of his possessions. And when someone asked him who he was? He claimed to be his own older brother before leaving. That particular Miller probably had a hell of a disappointment that he didn't catch up to him, maybe even got the idea that he still had family out there somewhere.]
[Nice work, Miller.]
