old but unfamiliar faces
"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

At first, this month seems no more unusual than the previous one for those who have been aboard the Moira for any amount of time. The crew who had landed on the slaver outpost were rescued, and with everyone aboard, the ship has pushed forward into the darker parts of the Runoff. Anyone arriving through the Ingress follows the same routine—moving from the Ingress room into the Medbay for their physical and contract before being assisted by seasoned crew members and helped to their assigned decks. But all familiar things must eventually come to an end: two final travelers come through the Ingress. The first, and most noticeable difference between them and all the others, is their clothing. Both are dressed in standard Moira uniforms, though they bear the insignia of one sharing the same rank as Captains Cúrre and Thán. After a moment to take in all the people on the platform ahead of them, one of the two latest arrivals approaches one of the Ingress panels and begins to manipulate the controls. The Ingress completely shuts down. Unlike before, however, there isn’t an imbalance felt across the ship; everything remains normal and stable.

Utilizing the computer systems located in the Ingress room, they send out the following message to the crew via the MID:

To all those aboard this vessel: I am Ira Phirun, assigned captain of the Moira. First Mate Egan and I will be commandeering all rights to the ship as soon as word is sent to those currently in charge. Expect a more detailed report as soon as all records and logs in Navigation have been reviewed by myself and the First Mate. All questions will be answered in a timely matter. For now, there will be no interruption of daily routine or reprimand if conduct among ranks is broken. Thanks for your time.

Heading to Navigation, the Captain and First Mate, for seemingly unknown reasons, approach Navigator Manasseh and have her show them all records and logs of the Moira. Those working in Navigation when the Captain and First Mate arrive will see Mana greet them in a professional manner. Oddly, the Captain and First Mate act very familiar with the Navigator. They review all documents, but when they come upon news that the Ploiatos is on board, their mostly friendly demeanor shifts quickly. The Captain issues a sharp order, unintelligible to those who are close enough to overhear parts of their conversation, and without any warning at all, Mana loses consciousness and collapses right there on the bridge. Within minutes of this happening, the ship as a whole falls into a low power state with basic functions only. Mana’s MID alerts Medbay, and without hesitation, Captain Cúrre places her in cryo with strict orders to those who work there not to disturb the unit.

As promised, the Captain and First Mate soon address the crew.

lights down low
The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill.

reuse & recycle
The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet.

new jobs, same faces
The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment?

[Personal space? Privacy? Well, it's not to say the mainframe wouldn't appreciate those, but suffice to say they're not anything he expects as any kind of default. Especially aboard a... scavenger ship? Slavers? The snippets of conversation he's picked up from people passing by have been frustratingly incomplete, though apparently they've taken on some kind of new personnel. And equipment.

Being typically counted in the latter group, the mainframe's not eager to volunteer his dubious state of function while he's vulnerable. At least not until he has a better idea what kind of case he should be making. It takes work to force back the automatic prompts as footsteps come to a stop in front of him, but he stays quiet, listening for any clues...

...until a scrape against audio is joined by the unexpected prickle of some kind of... data cable?... in the terminal's ports. Really? They're just looking to strip his databases? Well, most of them aren't here, but the mainframe could still almost be offended on principle.]

[Liquid smiles as he watches Tretij explore the room, and then when he holds a hand out to the dog, he watches the dog sternly. Time to see if training's paid off.]

He should be fine. If he doesn't behave, he's not getting any treats.

[Well, the dog does like to bite, but luckily he's grown slightly more gentle since Liquid first picked him out. Slightly. Of course, Liquid's working on training him to attack his enemies if he needs to. Instead of opting to bite Tretij's fingers this time, though, he just licks them and offers a friendly-sounding 'boof'. He likes him!]

I'll tell the captains to make it all official soon as I can. Er, well, the captain now, I guess.

[Gonna be hard to get used to the changes around here, but hey, his best friend's here and that's all someone can really ask for, right?]

We've got to stop meeting like this. [An attempt at humor, meant to deflect that troubling concern of Lúcio's – but the humor barely reaches his tone, much less his expression. He'd gotten a bit worse at doing that over the past few months.]

[The library was one of the first places she explored too - after the bar and observation deck, in that order. But Karen had been looking for answers and it had seemed like a pretty good place to start, even if real answers are usually buried just a little bit deeper.

Karen comes back now just to re-visit. There were some changes made to the ship while she was in cryo, and she came out just in time for a new batch of faces and found a handful of familiar ones gone. It all makes her feel a little bit like she did during those first days.

She sees the tower of books before she sees him, mostly because they hide him from view at certain angles. She shouldn't interrupt his reading, but Karen can't resist a quick smile and hello once she does spot him curled up in that chair.

[Even before Angela has noticed Nagito Komaeda come through the portal, he’s certainly noticed her. He was one of the fortunate few who was able to pass over without too much interference, and she was standing off to the side speaking to another person.]

[Of course, just because there’s no interference doesn’t mean that there’s no confusion. He looks equally baffled and amazed as he looks around the futuristic room — Earth technology wasn’t even close to this level where he came from. [Taken off guard by the sound of a child's voice, Clara is pulled out of looking for sign of a familiar face among the new arrivals. She glances down and over in the girl's direction, frowning as her words sink in. There's a gun in her hand, something that would have bothered her a lot more months ago, but now she's used to children here having weapons. The blood is concerning, as is the stench coming off of the girl, so she holds up both hands to show she doesn't mean any harm and crouches so she can be eye level. Given how short Clara is, that isn't much work at all.]

Absorbing that data, Yori looks away and winces silently.

Prometheus, Pandora, and Axl can certainly defend themselves...most of the time. Her User allies are good at avoiding trouble...when they have a chance. But Rinzler will either see this as her abandoning him or his failure to protect her, and she's not sure which calculation is worse; they both hurt.

By the speed of the response, he's used to people asking whether the broken Ingress can do things. If it's been broken, people must be trying to fix it. There's hope on several paths.

"I'll do that," she agrees after a moment. "Thank you." Yori hesitates.

Should she trust a complete stranger? He's been friendly. She can't keep it a secret who she's worried about if she wants the best chance of finding him. One hand clenches into a fist as she asks, "If someone does show up after me wearing a uniform like this--he can't speak but he makes a noise like a growl--can you please tell him Yori is safe?" She'd like to avoid Rinzler getting into unnecessary fights, as far as possible.

[Before he had taken his eyes from the view, it had already occured to Vision that there were potentially infinite possibilities for what would greet him. It would be foolish to assume that everyone on the ship was human--or even humanoid. Much of the ship could be occupied by sentient blob creatures. Really anything was possible at this juncture. But very little would have prepared him for what he sees.

Pietro. Pietro.

This changes quite a bit. It means the anomally that brought him here is infinitely more complex and cruel than he had imagined. Somehow, someway, from it's power here stands a dead man. Someone who by all logic should not be. And more than anything, more than working through the implications of this discovery, more than wading through philosophical questions of life and death, Vision wants to embrace him.

He doesn't, of course. What little he knows of Pietro tells him that may not be a welcome response. Still, he cannot help but look at him, to stare really, turning to face him completely.]

[So Starscream, deciding to hop out an airlock and take his new wing for a spin or something, is all strolling down the hall and minding his own business. Y'know assuming the entire pace isn't completely locked down thanks to this power shortage crap. So far the darkened hallways have just been a minor inconvenience. Until now, that is.

Starscream stops short and just stares at an odd looking spot on the ceiling. It take shim a moment to realize that he is, in fact, staring at a giant fuckhuge spider. Now, bugs and shit have never really bothered him before, but the whole giant space spider in the middle of a dark hallway that has suddenly become super creepy is more bullshit than he's prepared to deal with right now.]

[ Yeah, that light following him ain't helping calm Jesse, like, at all. Just makes Jesse think, through the panic flooding through his brain, that Giant Ass Mega Bot is gonna come after him and crush Jesse under his car-sized foot.

Jesse scrambles forward on his hands and knees and his shoes slip and slide along the floor as he tries clambering to his feet, cold panicked sweat beading across his forehead. God, it hurts trying to move at all, let alone trying to run for his life, and he winds up collapsing to the floor in a breathless, pain-filled heap before managing to roll himself over onto his ass. Staring wild-eyed at Mega Bot now he's facing him, Jesse digs his heels against the floor while slapping and grappling his hands at the floor to desperately keep trying to scramble back from the thing.

Mega Bot's assurances just moments ago that he's not going to hurt Jesse haven't remotely registered to Jesse's ears, let alone anything else the thing has said. God, he feels like the size of a flea compared to the gargantuan tower of metal in front of him. ]

Nagito Komaeda | Dangan Ronpa | OTA (reposting with edits whoops)

[personal profile] hopeslastreward 2016-08-02 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)

I. IN SPACE!

[Nagito Komaeda seemed to be taking the transition rather well. Not because he was able to bypass the headaches upon arrival — he got those — but because after just a few minutes of surprise, he acclimated unusually well to this development. Extraordinarily weird events always seemed to find Komaeda like a magnet, so it was only a matter of time before he was picked up by aliens and zapped into space. (Well, at least, he assumes they’re aliens. If the people running this operation all actually come from Earth, that’s a different story.)]

[Deep inside his heart of hopeful hearts, Komaeda was worried. Of course he was. He and he alone was the one to escape the murderous despair island of Jabberwock, while Hinata and all the others were still there. For a moment, he wondered if they will be worse off for his absence; he was the only one to figure out the Final Dead Room puzzle, after all, and he was now here. Would any of the others be able to do what he did? Would they receive the ‘secret’ that was supposed to be a prize? Was it bad luck that he was taken here, because all the rest of them would starve to death?]

[…No, he decided after a few moments. That was a stupid line of questions. Of course they could make it without him — well, Hinata and Nanami could, at least. Those two would rally the others and figure everything out on their own. He was sure of it. Komaeda had done all he could to help the other students cultivate their hope and escape the island, but now his work there has been cut short. Nothing to be done about it. They’ll… they’ll be fine. Of course they will. Their hope was too strong to let them die.]

[Comforted by these thoughts somewhat, Komaeda walks where he is told to walk, and tries not to think about the doubts too hard.]

[Inevitably, he finds his way to the observation deck, gaze locked on the vast starfields. It’s obvious that he is one of the people who hardly gets to see stars from earth (too much light pollution), much less from a goddamn spaceship. Most people would be gazing in awe at the sight — but Komaeda just looks worried and vaguely sick to his stomach.]

[Should someone approach him, he’ll turn to them and say shakily:]

Do you… see anything dangerous out there?

II. IN DARKNESS!

[Komaeda already couldn’t decide whether it was good or bad luck that brought him here. The whole bit about the ship spontaneously going into power-saving mode didn’t make things any easier. If the power is down, the ship’s defenses are probably also down, which means the entire vessel has nothing to protect it from… unfortunate accidents.]

[Komaeda’s never liked air travel. Not for a long, long time. Bad Things happen to him on planes. So being stuck on a spaceship… well, he’s been trying his hardest to ignore the anxiety gnawing at the side of his brain, and not entirely succeeding.]

[Fortunately, the garden still seems to be functioning, which means that Komaeda keeps his job of maintaining the bonsai tree and plant kittens. This tree literally grows cats, and Komaeda takes care of it. He considers himself blessed for this opportunity — caring for the animals and plants is a great way to distract him from unwelcome fears. They’re also just a calming presence. …Except for when it’s bathtime, when they are the exact opposite of ‘calming’. If you’re in the gardens, one of the little fluffernutters might trot up to you and start rubbing against your legs, or just sprint past at high speeds — and a few seconds later, Komaeda will come by, attempting to chase it. Cats can see well in dim lighting, but humans sure can’t.]

[If not actually doing his job, he might also be found roaming around Nomo Deck — by the way, residents of that deck will find that the cleanliness of the showers is gradually improving — or just wandering the halls, humming a certain lunar song from an old video game called Ducktales.]

Backwards. Well, it doesn't seem about ready to fly apart like old Peckhum's mirror satellites. But... "I wonder if the ship was intended to be long-range in the first place. It should've been running efficiently from the start."

She shakes her head, thoughts much more focused on letting her senses wander down a conduit than the immediate conversation. She's not really part of engineering on the ship, so it's uncertain just how much she can justify playing with systems. But if she's going to take responsibility, she's going to try her best.

Wait a second. That voice. Her focus snaps back to the corridor, her head coming around to stare at Leia. How'd she miss this earlier? Maybe she'll have to sit down and have some quality time combing through the ship directories.

"Mom!" There's some real joy in that single word.

Leia is about to answer--mostly in the negative, since a ship is only as efficient as the people running it--when the girl says the one word guaranteed to stop her in her tracks.

You have the wrong woman, is still her first instinct, despite knowing that her son has walked these halls for months now. I'm no one's mother. Not yet.

But she never asked Ben if he was an only child. If she and Han have managed one, why not more? (Because she doesn't want to think of the pain this girl will go through when her brother murders their father.)

[When Jaina finally has a few minutes to sit and breathe -- and let's not kid ourselves, that's as much her own fault as it is the sudden change in ship leadership and operations -- she does it in the observation deck. She's heard Uncle Luke's first students used to float in a pool to help them balance themselves without distraction, and Jaina tells herself that's the reason to go set in a half-dark room and watch the stars. She's too into being on a large, strange ship for settling down, instead tapping her foot and watching the stars with more than a little excitement for the prospect of the journey ahead.

Until she smells the survivor of a zombie apocalypse for the first time. She goggles at Clementine, certain there'd be much more of a commotion if the mess was the result of some terrible thing happening on the ship. But when she speaks...well, she's a Solo.]
