old but unfamiliar faces
"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

At first, this month seems no more unusual than the previous one for those who have been aboard the Moira for any amount of time. The crew who had landed on the slaver outpost were rescued, and with everyone aboard, the ship has pushed forward into the darker parts of the Runoff. Anyone arriving through the Ingress follows the same routine—moving from the Ingress room into the Medbay for their physical and contract before being assisted by seasoned crew members and helped to their assigned decks. But all familiar things must eventually come to an end: two final travelers come through the Ingress. The first, and most noticeable difference between them and all the others, is their clothing. Both are dressed in standard Moira uniforms, though they bear the insignia of one sharing the same rank as Captains Cúrre and Thán. After a moment to take in all the people on the platform ahead of them, one of the two latest arrivals approaches one of the Ingress panels and begins to manipulate the controls. The Ingress completely shuts down. Unlike before, however, there isn’t an imbalance felt across the ship; everything remains normal and stable.

Utilizing the computer systems located in the Ingress room, they send out the following message to the crew via the MID:

To all those aboard this vessel: I am Ira Phirun, assigned captain of the Moira. First Mate Egan and I will be commandeering all rights to the ship as soon as word is sent to those currently in charge. Expect a more detailed report as soon as all records and logs in Navigation have been reviewed by myself and the First Mate. All questions will be answered in a timely matter. For now, there will be no interruption of daily routine or reprimand if conduct among ranks is broken. Thanks for your time.

Heading to Navigation, the Captain and First Mate, for seemingly unknown reasons, approach Navigator Manasseh and have her show them all records and logs of the Moira. Those working in Navigation when the Captain and First Mate arrive will see Mana greet them in a professional manner. Oddly, the Captain and First Mate act very familiar with the Navigator. They review all documents, but when they come upon news that the Ploiatos is on board, their mostly friendly demeanor shifts quickly. The Captain issues a sharp order, unintelligible to those who are close enough to overhear parts of their conversation, and without any warning at all, Mana loses consciousness and collapses right there on the bridge. Within minutes of this happening, the ship as a whole falls into a low power state with basic functions only. Mana’s MID alerts Medbay, and without hesitation, Captain Cúrre places her in cryo with strict orders to those who work there not to disturb the unit.

As promised, the Captain and First Mate soon address the crew.

lights down low
The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill.

reuse & recycle
The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet.

new jobs, same faces
The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment?

Absorbing that data, Yori looks away and winces silently.

Prometheus, Pandora, and Axl can certainly defend themselves...most of the time. Her User allies are good at avoiding trouble...when they have a chance. But Rinzler will either see this as her abandoning him or his failure to protect her, and she's not sure which calculation is worse; they both hurt.

By the speed of the response, he's used to people asking whether the broken Ingress can do things. If it's been broken, people must be trying to fix it. There's hope on several paths.

"I'll do that," she agrees after a moment. "Thank you." Yori hesitates.

Should she trust a complete stranger? He's been friendly. She can't keep it a secret who she's worried about if she wants the best chance of finding him. One hand clenches into a fist as she asks, "If someone does show up after me wearing a uniform like this--he can't speak but he makes a noise like a growl--can you please tell him Yori is safe?" She'd like to avoid Rinzler getting into unnecessary fights, as far as possible.

There's a feeling in his gut. A feeling. Nihlus doesn't say the name he as on the tip of his tongue, but it all falls into the place.

Her scent. Why the uniform and backpack looked so familiar.

Outwardly, Yori gets to see none of his reaction beyond a quiet nod. He's a very accomplished liar with a vested interest in keeping his relation with Rinzler a secret, unfortunately.

"Growl sort, huh? Well, I'll keep my eyes out," he promises. After a pause, he adds, "I'm Nihlus, by the way. I work down in engineering. If you ever need help with anything, just look me up on the directory."

Another pause and then, "... Want me to walk you to the medical bay?"

Maybe he can cram a warning about Clu somewhere in there.

"Thank you, Nihlus." If there's anything else Yori can do to find Rinzler, it will have to wait until she talks whoever is in charge into giving her the right permissions for this system. "I'll do that." Anyone willing to help is worth remembering.

Even knowing nothing about Nihlus, she's impressed at his calm friendly posture. Not many Users have managed to sound so nonthreatening to a worried program. She'd like to believe he's sincere. And if he's not, better to test it now.

Yori nods at the next offer, rueful. "I'd appreciate at least directions, if you have time. This place is..." She looks up again at the sourceless glow and the wall of unidentified glitters that might be digital worlds of their own. If this is only a part of the ship, just how big is it? "Impressive." Also terrifying. She wants to know more.

Learning the layout of the school had been both difficult and almost pointless, because the trap changed every time she wasn't looking. Will the ship prove equally hard to map? Rooms can't move like that everywhere, Yori has to hope.

"The readings will take some time to parse anyways," Nihlus shrugs, attaching the sensor in his hand to the inside of the maintenance panel and then closing it.

"You'll get a map with your Intrapersonal Device, but I know it took me a bit of time to get used to the place." As he talks he gestures over in the direction of the room's exit, waiting for her to follow. "It's big. Bigger than it looks like from the outside. I suspect foldspace technology of some kind but hard to say. The only real tech the engineering team gets a good look at is the Ingress, the engines and the tower. Everything else seems to be hidden away somewhere else on the ship in places we can't access."

It's all happy fun sunshine times on the Engineering team.

At the gesture, Yori moves toward the door with a quick pace, eager to find the list she's most interested in at the moment.

She hasn't seen the outside yet. The ship looks big enough just from the first room. "A map will be very welcome," Yori murmurs, glancing around as they move to mark directions. Even with a map she'll need somewhere to start.

Can Users compress space as they can data in the system? It would make sense, but Yori hasn't seen any such thing yet.

Arriving here, then finding all the real data stuck behind layers of authorization they can't open...Yori remembers her struggle to understand the other place, not to mention her long quiet battle to learn anything while working for the Master Control Program, and her expression tightens with sympathy. "Only allowed to touch what they want you to work on, nothing that could let you find real answers?"

"Surprisingly enough, I think it's less malicious and more general cluelessness. On the part of the Captains here at least."

They voted on a battle plan. That's not exactly something that screams strong and competent leadership here.

"They're very laissez faire about crew matters in general in the five months I've been here. It's... very strange. Doesn't help that we seem to land into some kind of trouble bi-monthly either. If it's not the Ingress, it's the location. If it's not location, it's the locals there and if it's not the locals it's the crew." He puffs in exasperation before continuing on.

"Like the last time the Ingress opened, we ended up with some kind of program admin guy who calls himself Clu. Bunch of people dislike him around here, apparently he's some kind of dictator? And then someone else came through who accused all of the Lokis of being evil and just. It was a million different kinds of messy..."
yorisearching: (afraid)

[personal profile] yorisearching 2016-08-22 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Incompetent admins shouldn't be such an appealing thought, but Yori's had more than enough of malicious ones. If they're not much use at their functions, maybe they can learn. Unless the captains are lying about everything, of course. Letting the kidnapped crew distract each other would be a good delaying tactic.

She opens her mouth to seek more data--and stops, trying hard not to flinch visibly at that name. If Rinzler's admin is here, it's all the more urgent Yori stays inconspicuous, beneath his notice. She doesn't know Clu, she's no threat to Clu, she's not even his kind of program.

Once she's fought herself to a steady expression, she looks up and says, "It sounds like a complicated trip. Have they done anything on board to make trouble, the dictator or the Lokis?"

Whatever a Loki is. Has Clu enslaved anyone else yet?
beautifulspaceraptor: (sad Nihlus)

[personal profile] beautifulspaceraptor 2016-08-28 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, so she does know him. Nihlus is careful not to react, but he notes that stifled flinch and delayed question.

"Not as far as I've heard. There's friction between them and the people they'd wronged- or in the case of the Lokis, a version of them that'd wronged those people, I think- but no violence."

The spat between Alan and Clu had been worrying though.

"This ship does have dangerous crew," he continues, quieter. "And ones who have killed or seriously injured other crew. I'd suggest keeping your guard up and keeping your wits about you."
yorisearching: (disappear)

[personal profile] yorisearching 2016-08-29 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yori glances down to hide her relief. If Clu had done or ordered Rinzler to do anything extreme, the ripples probably wouldn't be subtle. The admin has to be as lost as she is. Maybe she can avoid him long enough to make a better plan.

When they recruit by random portal, friction's probably to be expected; she wonders how common it is to get more than one person from the same world, or different versions. Is it a good thing that the dangerous people are still counted as crew? She thinks of Rinzler and of Clu and doesn't know.

"I will," she promises. "Thank you for the warning." Finding out that Clu is lurking around again is not pleasant, but very necessary. Though every User aboard is also a potential threat, and that much she'd already known.
beautifulspaceraptor: (look at his beautiful fucking eyes)

[personal profile] beautifulspaceraptor 2016-09-03 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
For a quiet moment, Nihlus watches her out of the corner of his eye as they head down the hallway. For an idle moment, he wonders what she might do with the news that Rinzler was actually one of the people who had killed other crewmates. Three crewmates, even, the highest bodycount out of all the murders he's heard of onboard so far.

In the end, he tucks the thought away for later. The circumstances around those murders were... complicated to say the least. And with the position he was in now in regards to Rinzler's situation...

It wasn't his place to reveal that particular story.

"You're taking this all awful calmly," Nihlus remarks instead, giving her a rueful smile. "One of the new arrivals just straight up tried to deck me about half an hour ago."
