the glass menagerie
"I want the world to be fragile. There is no place to hide a dark heart."

After the missive from the people aboard the vessel carrying those from Caducus Secondary, the Moira is alive with preparations for defending the ship. No matter how big or small, each individual is entrusted with the responsibility of protecting themselves and their fellow crew members at all costs. With the Captains having divided them into teams to devise appropriate Plans of Action, they have decided to merge all the ideas into a singular strategy and have relayed it to the entirety of the crew via the MID. Everyone has been given a vital part to play, and although the Captains realize that some aboard are passive, now isn’t the time to be idle. Now is the time for action.

Step 1: Negotiate & Infiltrate
With this part of the plan enacted, a small number of those who have volunteered to attempt negotiations have been heard by the Caducans and have been temporarily “invited” to board their vessel. However, due to this highly stressful situation, a portion of the offensive team have been asked to accompany them in order to disable as much of the opposing ship and its crew to force them to evacuate onto the Moira. Regardless of time and what reparations are offered, negotiations ultimately fail. The Caducans want the debt of their planet to be paid by the people of the Moira with their very lives. While boarded with the Caducans, they will attempt to incapacitate the negotiation party through violent means, and it will be the responsibility of this particular team to attempt disengage the Caducans’ ship to prevent it from attacking the Moira. However, despite all efforts to sabotage their systems, the ship itself shuts its primary units into Lockdown Mode.

All Moirans are forced to make a decision: stay and be shut inside an unfamiliar ship with the remaining Caducans who are still out for blood or make an attempt to flee to the emergency escape units on that ship with the other Caducans who have used them to head straight for the Moira.
Meanwhile, back on the Moira, the crew must work to secure the ship against the incoming assault by the Caducans after having left their ship via emergency escape units. This means that some of the defense team will have disabled the gunnery to make it look as if the Moira is defenseless and secure the rest of the area with those on the offense team. There is no place for mercy; the Caducans will board the ship through the Cargo Bay. They are not interested in granting it to the crew after all the losses they suffered at Caducus Primary. The only choice will be to fight for their lives (kill or be killed) or find a way to lure the Caducans into the Ingress room to send them to some unknown place where they will no longer be a threat. The Captains have given all members of the crew leave to use whatever means necessary to protect both themselves and the ship’s systems from the invaders. Failure is not an option.

Step 3: ???? & Step 4: Profit
In the aftermath of the fight, the Moira is in a state of devastation. Bodies of the Caducans as well as some of the Moira’s own crew can be found in the hallways. Those who were stuck aboard the Caducan ship have either been rescued or rescue attempts are underway. This is the time to recover, to calculate what has been lost and come together as the crew the Captains have wanted since the Ingress had brought them aboard. Any and all Medbay personnel will be at the crew’s disposal, though the Captains will be focusing their attention on the Ingress room and what has become of it after having thrown so many people inside it.

The Ingress technology is broken. Various events on planets and on the ship have shown that fixing it is near impossible, and that it is entirely unpredictable in nature. The Moira’s Ingress had recently turned off, sending the ship into a slight freefall before it restored and righted itself. Hours after sending the remaining Caducan crew members through the Ingress, the swirling blue light goes still and emits a pulse that ripples out in waves as far out around the ship as a few miles. For one lingering breath, it’s impossible to move, a near blinding light surrounding every crew member. The rush of wind is the only sound that can be heard. Moments later, every Moiran, even those that were on the Caducan ship, are now in the same place. The Ingress has malfunctioned, causing time and space to overlap—the two ships have twisted together into something unseemly and new.
Shattered & Swept Aside
Parts of the Moira have ceased to exist. Areas of the ship have become crystalline and transparent. There are rooms that were never there before. The Mess Hall is gone, replaced by a single empty room devoid of all furniture. The tree at the center of the garden is still there exactly as it was except it is now made of glass. The floors are a jarred mess of glass and steel, and there is broken glass littering the ship. The air filtration systems are going into overdrive to clear out the miniscule particles floating everywhere. So, sometimes, too deep a breath may end with inhaling shards of glass. The clothing you’re wearing might have turned to glass, doors are sealed shut, and it’s hard to discern where the Moira starts and the Caducan ship ends.

Everyone has only one job: be careful of the glass.
We Break Fast, We Are Glass
The crystalline glass that is woven into the ship is now possibly a part of the crew. The transition from skin to glass might be painful or feel as if it’s always been that way. Hair has turned to glass, and arms, eyes, patches of skin or entire bodies are now transparent and reflect light. Joints may be stiff, or flex and move as good as they did before. If a crystalline hand is smashed against a wall it might break, or dent steel. For those who need medical attention, all staff have been summoned to the Medbay once more to help their fellow crew. Prosthetics and coverings will be made and offered to ensure that the glass doesn’t get broken or to prevent further breakage. Crew may assist each other in finding a way to remove the glass, or leave it as it is until a permanent solution can be found.

( ooc; When it comes to barracks, each player can decide if their room has ceased to exist for the event or not. Characters that have roommates need to decide together what they’d prefer. The amount of glass that a character has turned to is up to the player, as well as if it is painful or uncomfortable in any way. For questions, please go here. Please comment to activity check to receive new ranks (if applicable)! )

Toriel | on the Moria | OTA

[personal profile] inruins 2016-07-02 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
[A - Step 2 - OTA]
To say things have 'gone to shit' is an accurate summary of the chaos falling over the ship. Attempted negotiations and peace fell through faster than Toriel expected.

The boss monster knows she can't hurt these people. She knows this even as the ship is invaded, even as violence breaks out. The best she can do is stifle it. If not that keep as many people safe as she can until the fighting desists. She will show as much mercy as she can manage, even if others choose violence. Toriel can't blame them, not in a time like this. Not when a great injustice has been done onto the Caducans, onto the Moria crew who inherited this problem.

"Stand back, quickly!" She commands, running forward as fire swirls to life between a Moria crew member and a Caducan's invader. The sudden fire magic bursting forth should be enough to startle the attacker back for now. Enough time for Toriel to properly check on her crewmate. "Are you hurt?"

Whatever reprieve they've found will not last long. Her fire flickers enough for the enraged refugee to come back at the pair.

[B - Death becomes us - Closed to Asriel & Sans]

"Stay close, please." She urges firmly, holding onto her son's hand as they move together through the chaos of the hallway. Those of the Moria fight back the Caducans. The stench of blood and the sight of fallen bodies only make Toriel's grip on Asriel's hand tighten further. It is the war all over again, simply in smaller quarters. Toriel never wanted to see this again, much less have her children or family be a part of this kind of bloodshed.

It makes her mind jump to the death toll, to who might die from this mess.

She won't lose her son again, never again. Even if she has to pay dearly for it. "We need to find your siblings, quickly."

"Mom..."

Asriel's voice is small, a little scared as he clings onto Toriel's hand desperately. Every loud noise earned a flinch, every body they came across got him to stumble just a little.

"The fighting is getting closer."

There's gunfire nearby, and it sends a sharp chill down Asriel's spine. He remembers what it feels like to get attacked by a gun, and it's not something he wants to experience again.

Or have any of his family experience it either.

"I know, love, I know." She answered gently back, keeping Asriel as close as she can whilst keeping a steady stride forward. They can't linger. They can't be caught in the crossfire. Gunfire grows louder. Loud enough Toriel shifts their course. Hiding in their room seems the only sensible plan, the hard part is getting there amongst the chaos.

"We'll be safe soon." She can lock the door, lock her children away from this. "Please, if you can call Frisk and Chara- we need to find them."

Toriel assumes the MID's work still, assumes and hopes.

Asriel gives a terrified nod, before fumbling with his MID. It's a little hard to make two calls while on the move, but he clicks his claws against the screen to contact them both.

"Chara- Frisk- are you there? Where are you? We need to meet up and head someplace safe-"

His voice is cut off by a yelp as a gunshot rings out from the next room over.

[personal profile] inruins 2016-07-03 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Toriel swears under her breath, tugging Asriel behind her. She will not let her son be shot. "Stay behind me." She commands firmly. Trying to move past by the room quickly as they can manage. A stray body or so makes it difficult to manage without losing sight of Asriel.

Another gunshot rings out followed closely by a scream, then silence. A refugee emerges, pausing at the sight of the two monsters in the hall. The gun in her hand fills in the blanks. The anger on her face only writes in what lay in their future.

"Stay back." Toriel warns, baring her teeth in a snarl. Fire burns at her finger tips and she does not hesitate to summon her magic in a wave of fire, attempting to frighten the refugee back into the room.

The gun in the refugee calls up an all too familiar feeling of dread that travels up Asriel's spine. He knows what they mean, he knows what they sound like, he knows what it feels like to have their bullets embedded in your flesh and fur while trying to guard the body of your dead sibling.

He knows exactly what's going to happen to them.

"Mom-" Asriel's voice is high, desperate. "Mom, please - let's just run!"

His hand reaches to paw at her dress. They could still make it if they run now, all they had to do is get moving right now-

[It's that weird goat lady again.

The fire catches Rail off guard, enough so that she blinks dumbly at Toriel's question. There's a cut across Rail's already scarred up face, but it doesn't seem to be bothering her any. She was more irritated at being struck while trying to put some distance between herself and the enemy.

The sound of footsteps causes Rail's head to snap up, and their attacker is already on the move again. Her hand reaches into her pocket, pulling out something star-shaped with a small pin at the top.]

Lady, I'd take two steps back if I were you.

[Yanking the pin, Rail throws the grenade in the direction of the refugee. It erupts in a wave of fire and smoke into the narrow corridor.]

[Toriel does not need to be told twice, stepping back. Not missing the grenade in the child's hand. She stifles her frustration at the fact the little girl somehow has weaponry like this.

She covers her mouth with a sleeve, wincing at the explosion of smoke and fire. The refugee screams, caught in the attack, burning.]

Let me heal you, at least. [She insists firmly, trying to not look at the dying refugee.]

[Rail watches the refugee burn, making no attempt to make their death any more quick and painless. While he mouth is tugged into smile by the stitches at the edges of her lips, there's a dark look to her eyes.

Toriel's voice snaps her out of it, and the offer gets a small head tilt.]

What, why? Don't bother, I can't feel it. And I'm not gonna drop dead from something like this.

[Toriel is disquieted by the smile, by the edge of satisfaction on the girl's face.]

You won't, but this won't be the only injury you sustain given this fight. Given the anger in their hearts, they will not stop.

Do not let their anger consume you. Do not be consumed by this killing. [She states firmly back, unable to just ignore this.]

[So what? So she'll blow them all up too. Blow up everything until there was nothing left.

Because obviously that worked so well when she tried saving her own little brother.]

What are you talking about? This is the kind of stuff I was made for, you know. And they'll just kill us all if we don't kill 'em first so, survival of the fittest, right? Ain't that the law of nature?

[She perks up, with misplaced pride.]

If you're worried I'm gonna end up blowing you or the folks on this ship up, don't worry - I always know where I'm aiming!

Kaworu is startled enough by Toriel's intervention that he doesn't even protest--it's just a rush of fire, the sensation of blinding light and intense heat on his skin, and it's Toriel of all people, standing between him and a Caducan he'd hardly cared to acknowledge save for wordless eye contact as they'd rushed towards him.

It's enough of a surprise--first the fire, yes, but Toriel, who had so explicitly told him she would 'not forgive' him for his part in SEELE's methods, who had (like Sans) given him an ultimatum: never approach Frisk again. Her intentions had been clear enough that he hadn't bothered to defend himself. But now--

He stares wide-eyed at her as she directly interrupts the Caducan's attack, apparently on his behalf... and then--even more bewilderingly--stops to ask if he's hurt.

??????????

"Child- do speak up." She states simply back, Kaworu is not her favorite person now but she won't leave the boy to die. Her fire ripples into a wall of burning orbs, startling the Caudcan back with a startled yelp. The refugee can only stumble back and try to avoid the orbs following after him. Toriel knows it will be a decent enough distraction for the moment.

"Have you been injured?"

If he looks a little dazed--

Well, maybe he is.

He watches her fire chase the Caducan down, red light reflected in red eyes--both of their eyes, his and Toriel's both. He looks back at her.

"--no." He wouldn't have been, even had she never arrived. But he doesn't say that, because he doesn't think to. What he says instead is--

"I thought you wouldn't speak to me."

"Please stay safe. It is dangerous here now."

...so even though she doesn't like him.....

....

"....I see."

He lowers his head, reflectively.

'I never said I hated you!'

He remembers Shinji saying that to him; his true feelings, set free in that painful moment of their final meeting. But this is different, isn't it? What Toriel is saying...

"Don't worry. You can spend your time elsewhere. The Caducans will do me no harm."

He meets her eyes, but there's no smile right now. He's simply matter-of-fact.

She can't stand the thought of a painful loss. Even if it's someone she doesn't like--

"There are others you'd rather be protecting in my stead."

Better to find them, and help them. He will not stand in her way.

Before the attack

[personal profile] gainedlove 2016-07-03 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Frisk hasn't been able to sit still all day. Nervous energy keeps them fidgeting, restless, and for all that Frisk has tried very, very hard to work on the lessons Toriel had set for them they just can't focus.

Frisk paces around the room, jumps on and off the bed repeatedly, checks and rechecks and rechecks their inventory for chisps and their dagger and everything they need for that justin-case they're praying with all their heart and soul won't happen. They're so wound up that when Toriel enters the shared room Frisk yelps and jumps nearly a foot in the air, whirling around with a scared and startled expression.

"M-Mom!"

The startled yelp isn't quite what the boss monster expected when she returned. She moves to set the cafeteria tray down for the moment. The snacks she brought can wait. "Frisk-? Are you alright?"

"Did something happen while I was gone?"

You know, Cryo weaponry is quite the invention. Freezing, shattering, it's all fantastic. Aurelia's been doing it all with her diadem, and she's not sure how to feel about the sudden burst of fire that blossoms in between her and a Caducan she was about to freeze.

Oh, and the giant bipedal goat.

"I'm quite alright, darling," she starts, before the Caducan recovers from the burst of fire. "This one's feisty, isn't he?" she finishes, not even hesitating to shoot the Caducan in the head. Right between the eyes. Lovely.

Disgust pools low in her belly as Aurelia shoots the man point blank between the eyes. He hits the floor with an audible thud, red staining the tiled floor underfoot. "I'm glad you're fine."
