Arrival

There's the sensation of falling, but in no particular direction. Anyone who opens their eyes will see very little, but it isn't blackness—it's every color at the same time, every place that's ever been, and time seems to be stretching out and snapping back together all at once.

And suddenly the travelers are here. Where 'here' is has not yet been determined, but all at once there is a sense of solidness in place and time as the journey they were on comes to an abrupt stop. Those with quick reactions may be able to brace themselves enough to stay on their feet; those without it may find themselves sprawled across a solid metal deck.

They are in a large room with a ceiling that is not smooth, but jagged with patchwork repairs. Standing before them is a massive metal slab, twisted and scorched but clearly once part of some unknown machine. But the piece has been cleaned, polished and place upon a pedestal, a focal point for the comfortable seating arranged in an opposing semi-circle across the room. Someone had a use for this room once, but now, the space is silent.

The new arrivals may remain for however long they choose. No one, it seems, has detected their sudden arrival, much less come to investigate. When they venture out of this quiet room, they may have an inkling why. The corridors outside and the laboratories, workshops and other places they lead to are well made, but strangely dusty and show no recent signs of maintenance. No one will come to harm them or greet them because, it seems, no one is here.

The layout of the halls may seem strangely familiar, though it will take some searching to discover why. Few windows can be found, and those that exist are solidly reinforced with thick transparent material, revealing little more than the swirling of familiar storms outside. There are no doors to the outside, only to more corridors or interior locations. Any traveler who accesses the systems of this facility through their own abilities or through a computer workstation or control panel will learn the reason: this is a space station, and so cannot open to the outside.

The system will reveal one other truth. This is not just a space station. This was the Ingress Complex, and the date is 300 years in the future.

Welcome to Thisavrou.

Avagi

The station is not as they remember it. Once a place of transit and scientific research, a place of rest but not truly home to most who lived there, it now shows clear signs of being a lived-in space for more than just a working crew. While records and outdated maps in the system make its former identity clear, more recent references to the station use a different name: Avagi. A common word to multiple old Savrii dialects, the word roughly translates to "dawn".

Many locations on the complex have changed, and others put to entirely new use. But whoever made these changes are nowhere to be found; the only 'living' creatures anyone encounters are low-level AI taskbots, small robots that scuttle throughout the complex executing simple maintenance subroutines. And there is a limit to the exploration that can be done. The accessible areas of Avagi compose only a fraction of the former complex, and attempting to breach the seal on the main exit will set off an alarm, notifying anyone in the vicinity that the bordering compartment has been compromised, and if they continue, they will allow storm energy into the area they are in now. Entry to a few other corridors is simply too badly damaged to get through, although whether the damage was caused in the initial blast or later is unknown.

Short of self-created hazards, no danger will present itself in the next few weeks. During the early days of their arrival, several newcomers arrive, stumbling through pockets of glowing, warped reality that seem to lead somewhere else before disappearing just as fast. With nowhere else to go for the moment, everyone is free to explore Avagi's current confines—but certain points of interest might be worth devoting attention to first:

  • The Residential Block: Whoever lived here left little behind in the converted studios and apartments—so they won't mind if someone moves in, will they? People need to sleep somewhere.

  • The Library: Exploring the collected knowledge here might yield more information on what has happened here, but the computer lab will need some work first.

  • Labs & Engineering: The space and resources that can be found here offer the best opportunity to fix things up around here. Note that while a network transmitter is embedded in the region, the differing technology levels means that communication will be garbled at first. Text messages will be corrupted, and video/audio communication will cut out regularly every few seconds. Happily, there are a plethora of comm devices on hand that could adapt the TABS to Avagi's systems. Hybridizing the devices with old and new technology also allows the tech-inclined to customize their own data security.

  • The Greenery: Nutrition blocks are all well and good, but getting this garden in order would make meals a lot more enjoyable. Who knows what you might be able to grow?

The silvery fragments had spit Mei out somewhere far away from Lena, leaving her to wonder at first if they'd ended up in the same place after that totally friendly, encouraging-yet-gentle push that wasn't a shove at all that Mei had given Lena. So she'd turned to her TAB, but only got error messages when she tried to post a message. The only thing to do was to roam around and try to find her. But eventually, it looked like people were claiming rooms for themselves, so Mei picked a spot near the labs and went inside, depositing Snowball on the bed and opening her Pac Disc to remove her hastily packed items.

When Lena walks in, Mei has a chair pulled out and is standing on it, trying to hang her lanterns she bought in the melting pot of Region 5 so long ago. With a gasp, Mei wobbles on the chair before hopping down.

"There you are! I thought you had to be here, but I just had to find where." Setting the lantern aside, she approaches, looking sheepish. "Are you mad?" Meaning 'mad' Mei forced her to leave the world before it burned.

Lena didn't expect to find Mei here. Her surprised expression gives way to embarrassment. She'd lost her composure and had to be saved, luckily not at Mei's expense. Nobody knew how long they had before everything crumbled.

Her embarrassment and guilt only deepens when Mei asks if she's mad.

"No, of course I'm not mad." Lena shakes her head with a sigh.

"I'm sorry. I could've gotten us both killed."

"No, that wouldn't have happened," Mei assures her. "I'm sure those fragments would have sucked us in eventually, whether we jumped in or tried to stay. It seems like they were attracted to us, like magnets." Mei doesn't know much about their unique energy signatures beyond the fact the Ingress techs were trying to decode everyone's to get them back home. What happened was inevitable in her eyes.

"It's good to see you arrived safely."

Maybe Mei's right-- she doesn't remember much about the immediate aftermath of the Ingress shattering. Lena was too focused on finding the others to observe her environment. Still, Lena can't quell her guilt. But burdening Mei with that will only make her feel worse. So she tries to smile, but it doesn't have the brightness it usually does.

"I'm glad you made it too. I was so worried when I couldn't find you."

frostedplum: (thumbs up to that!)

"Same here! It all worked out so strangely, dropping us apart. But now that we're here, we have a lot of work to do to get this place up and running like it used to." It's not that Mei isn't feeling for the people that didn't show up here, but thinking of it makes her feel so useless and she's at her best when she's keeping busy and trying something, even if it might not succeed. It's what she has to do now. She has to help get this place in working order to help out all of them. It's just who she is.

Mei then turns slightly -- not away from Lena, but enough to show off the room.

"I claimed this space for myself and I'm trying to make it look nicer. There are two beds, if you would want to share?"

Lena can't help but admire Mei's strength, especially now. She's already looking to the future and how to make their (temporary?) home more livable. Lena is shaken to her core, but Mei is the calm in the storm. Maybe one day Lena can put into words what it means to have someone ground her in a time like this. Maybe one day she can even repay Mei.

But right now, all she can do is give Mei a small, but genuine, smile.

"S'long as you don't mind. It'd be nice to have a roomie again."

"I don't mind! I'm used to being on my own, but that doesn't mean I don't like people around." It's just that she forgets to interact when she's been caught up in her work, and the silence doesn't bother her. Besides, Snowball is always around to make noise.

"I think this is a good area. It feels like the heating works better over here than in other sections of the station."

Lena has spent a substantial time with Winston, so she knows how scientists can get when they're engrossed in their work.

"Sounds good to me! 'sides, a lab suits you, right?"

Mei lets out a soft giggle. "That's right! Hopefully I can figure out what they were doing in there with what supplies are still left."

But for the moment, she'd like to get this place looking nice, so she picks up her lantern and steps back up on the chair.

"I know everything is up in the air at the moment, but hopefully this makes things feel a little nicer in the meantime."

Mei's resilience and ability to make the best of all of this makes Lena smile. Helping Mei make the room a little homier sounds like a better idea than moping, so she digs through her own pac disc.

"I managed to grab a few things from my house before we left. Hope they'll liven things up a bit too."

Admittedly, it's just a collection of whatever she could hastily throw into it. Lena pulls out a ceramic whale, which she places on her side table. She doesn't have much else-- mostly tea and clothes, but she does pull out a nice, plush blanket she got ages ago from one of the shops Angela frequented. As she spreads it out on the bed, a bittersweet feeling washes over her.

But she looks up at Mei cheerfully hanging lanterns and decides it's more important to push forward right now than to be bogged down by the past.
