the outer gate
"Open up, and let them in."

The Moira is no more.

With the damage done to the ship due to the timeslip, all that remains is a burning wreckage and parts to be taken—if the crew can find anything in the pieces. Recovery and headcounts are the main objective for the first several hours of being planetside, and once things have settled just enough, Captain Ira calls for a meeting and addresses those who are able in person to explain the situation. He draws a rough map of the area and explains where he believes they are - according to the terrain - and where they must go. For anyone who’s listening, he describes things like an “Outer Gate”, an “Inner Gate” and “gate sectors”. Believing this to be the best course of action, all crew are asked to explore and gather what they think they’ll need to make the long journey towards the central point of the Hub. Because the MIDs are no longer working due to the lack of a network, the Captains distribute a newer tech called the TAB. It serves the same functions as the MID but is lighter, slimmer, and has the ability to stick to any surface.

WELCOME TO THE MIDWAY HUB

Now that the smoke from the crash has cleared, and injured crew have been tended to, the Captains get everyone ready for departure by explaining what they know of the Hub. Almost stone-like, the creators built a domed workspace in the largest solid space on the planet they could find. Gates are the only way inside, and anyone who catches a glimpse of the compound will see that parts of the dome are cracked. Yet, everything still appears to be relatively intact. The Midway Hub’s terrain is very rocky and difficult to walk on at times. Below the surface is a honeycomb of intermittently dense and brittle stone that makes travel difficult due to the unpredictable nature of what lies beneath the crew’s feet. Those who can develop the tech from what’s left of the debris might be able to create something to determine which route is the safest. Ships and small crafts can be used to fly, but landing is a problem—rocks jut up in sharp peaks and the clearer spots can't handle their weight. Vegetation is sparse, consisting of twisted dark gray thistles that have sprung up from cracks in the rock and burn when in direct contact with skin, and what could be considered small animals here can be seen scurrying away the closer crew get to them.

WEEK ONE
Crew are asked to hook cryo beds together and to use any appropriate vehicles that can be made or fashioned to fit the terrain to carry injured crew on the journey to the center of the Hub. Supplies are gathered, and the Captains, as well as any crew who want to, give the Moira a proper sendoff, heads bowed as they say goodbye to what’s been their home. Traveling starts out slowly, a line of a hundred-plus crew members making their way slowly forward. Stops are frequent, but camping for rest only occurs at night. Crew are assigned watch shifts, fires are built, injured tended to, and those who are able are asked to explore nearby caves and hunt for food.

Something akin to deer, though striped and only to be found in pairs, can be stumbled across at night. Throngs of dark purple mammels begin to follow the Moirans on their trip as well. They are friendly, curious, and eat the thistle. Meet the intelligent, watchful predators that aren’t easily scared away and follow the crew from a distance as if waiting to pounce. The thistle can be eaten, but only if cooked first, and those who sample the chewy plant raw will experience a burning sensation in their throat that doesn’t go away until the cooked version is consumed. During the first week, water can’t be found.

Anyone who does hunt, gather, or explore should make sure to that their TABS are on and it’s suggested that nobody goes alone.

Nearing the end of the first week, an Ingress can be spotted close by that crew can explore. If anyone dares to go inside, they will find the texture of the ground and surrounding walls to be rather soft. If inspected closely, crew will discover that what they originally thought to be rock is actually a living organism that’s fed off the energy of the Ingress it’s attached itself to. It’s not harmful and squishy to the touch. If pressed hard enough, it secretes a turquoise liquid with the consistency of water that might make a good substitute for that very thing.
WEEK TWO
When crew finally pass through the sector gates, a strange sensation encompasses them, and a depowering of sorts goes into effect. The creators put in security measures meant to put all visitors on equal footing as well as to protect themselves from harm. All crew will essentially have the strength and abilities of the average human. An unforeseen issue, this causes Captain Thán to slip into a coma as he is no longer able to continue to recover at a steady pace, and with the loss of the former Captain’s abilities, crew can no longer be brought back if they die. For the first time, all Moirans are subject to permanent death.

During this week of travel, broken ingress machines and parts will be found scattered among the rocks, and new crew will come through. Unfortunately, these Ingresses aren’t in good shape, and anyone coming through will be in varying states of distress—some physical and some mental. New individuals will either have suffered an age slip, growing older or younger than their original body, some form of body transformation (perhaps that shiny thing they were wearing is now part of them somehow), or an extreme weakness they had never been subjected to before arriving on the Midway Hub. The new people will be offered to join their group, once found, and seasoned crew will be asked to explain to them where they are going and what they know.

The rest of the week will be a mix of greeting the new arrivals and continuing to travel to the center of the Hub. The closer they get, the less frequently they’ll see animals, and more caves will begin to pop up.
WEEK THREE
Entering the third week of travel, settlements and houses begin to crop up and are prime areas for exploration and general supplies. Those who go inside may find items that have been left behind and evidence showing that those of varying species and cultures lived in the homes. Some appeared to have been scientists while others were explorers, but all living quarters are deserted. Crew who are less lucky in their search might come away with no fresh supplies, and others might walk into traps or safeguards left behind by previous tenants; these come in many forms, from mild paralysis to temporary unconsciousness. As there are more residences, there are also more caves. The entrances vary in size, and light sources will be needed to explore. Once inside, crew can find purple underwater streams, which can be consumed, and glowing surfaces. When crew drink the water, it temporarily restores powers, a few minutes tops, and then, extreme lethargy settles in for a couple of hours.

Further into the cave systems, crew will come across these lovely creatures that are attracted to sound and track through scent. They are highly dangerous and attack simply to feed. Killing them, though, is surprisingly simple as they are just as vulnerable and weak as everyone else. They are vicious in demeanor but only as strong as an average human.

The closer to the Inner Gate crew get, the less homes, wildlife, and more caves there will be.
WEEK FOUR
The Captains, aware that the crew is exhausted, stop and make camp for the first few days. Someone mentions that it’s the holidays where they’re from, and the Captains do their best to throw a party. Set up at the base of a cave, tents are built and fires roar. Soft music is played in the form of guitar, thank you Ira, and Cúrre brings out some legumes that taste like cherries when roasted. There isn’t much in the way of decorations, but crew are encouraged to dig through their pac-discs and contribute to the festivities.

After a brief respite, crew learn that the entrances to Gate A and Gate B are inside one of the caves but any signs or markings have long since worn away or been destroyed. Groups are split, TABS are synced, and crew explore carefully until an entrance is found. Crew discover Gate A first, and all crew are contacted to gather there. The Captains will remain at the cave entrance until all crew are accounted for, and then, they’ll enter through the gate together.

Who would marry a greaser hippie who can't fly. [you can't fly either Badou

and then, mouth quirked in a stupid little smirk]

You don't know? It's someone who gets high all the time, don't have a job. That kinda thing.

Nihlus had always been a party person. Being around people, being with people, friends and strangers alike- he loved it. Loved connecting and learning about all the lives around him, loved feeling like he was a part of something, especially after long, isolated weeks or months of missions.

Now, however...

Well.

He's currently fiddling with a circuit-board, propped up on his knees to compensate for having to work one-handed. There's a red scarf draped over his shoulder and neck to hide the missing limb, although it's a half-hearted attempt at this point.

At the sound of someone moving nearby, the Spectre pauses looking up.

"... Kaidan."

It's a somewhat unsure greeting, carefully neutral.

That... that sounds nice. I'd really like that.

[It still doesn't sound real - and lately, Asriel's been a little afraid of seeing this world where monsters could be free and happy being reset back to nothing. He hates feeling like that. Deep down, he knows Frisk will do the right thing.

But why was Frisk afraid too...?

They've had this conversation before. There was an odd sense of fakeness to it - like they were just trying to convince themselves that this was what was waiting for them at the end of their journey. That all their pain would vanish the moment they go home. Of course, it never works like that.]

Mettaton... you know you're still gonna be part of our family no matter what happens, right? You're pretty much stuck with us now.

... I know going home isn't going to make everything that happened here suddenly go away. I think you understand how I feel about this place better than anything else. So... if things aren't okay, you've always got me to talk to. Okay?

[ The little blue orb is familiar and Nihlus doesn't try to chase after it. He watches it flit by with a distant sort of attention, blearily tracking its progress.

As the Bit stops to chatter at Alan a bit of a ways away, it distantly occurs to him that he should probably be a be more concerned.

He hasn't spoken to the man yet. Probably should have immediately after waking up but-

Mostly... he'd just been hiding.

Regardless of Nihlus's own preparedness though, Alan can probably easily spot the tell-tale red glow of his armor that was a bit too deep to be Rinzler's. The Turian is too exhausted to try and dodge him at any rate. ]

[Mettaton doesn't respond immediately. He just closes his eye and seems to contemplate that. He's not smiling anymore, because it's hard to do so when, inside, you're telling yourself "don't raise your hopes and for the love of God don't tell him anything."

He couldn't. He couldn't impose it on Asriel, that was the whole point of these three weeks. It would all have been for naught if he talks about himself and his insecurities.]

...I know. And I appreciate that you would listen to me, really I do.

And...I am happy to be stuck with you, as you say. You have a very lovely family and I'm privileged to be considered a member of it. You've all given me something that I did not deserve but which I cherish.

That took you less time than I thought.

[He'd figured it would be a week or so. But he remembers seeing her with it almost immediately after they got here.]

If it's taking out our tech... maybe it took out the ship, too.

[The water?]

[Once he's at the edge of the pool, he's hauling himself up, and looking down at one of his hands. Still coughing up purple fluid but...]

[After a moment, his fingers flood with equally purple light.]

How could...? That doesn't make any sense.

[Totally ignoring the question, though.] Are you hurt?

[Admittedly Asriel doesn't know about Mettaton's current personal dilemma, only that he hasn't been doing well ever since that incident with the timeslip. Still, the offer is there.]

I'm glad you're a part of it.

[He does deserve it - Mettaton doesn't deserve to be alone. He's got family back home, if Asriel remembers right but...

Right now, it's just the Dreemurrs.]

Do you need help getting up? Or... do you want to?

[Asriel doesn't really want to get up, but he probably shouldn't just lay on top of Mettaton all day.]

[personal profile] mttbrandlegs 2016-12-08 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
[Mettaton's grip loosens and his arms slide lazily to his sides when Asriel asks him about getting up.]

Mm, sweetheart, I don't think you could lift me if you tried. That being said...I'm a bit spent when it comes to energy--oh, not my battery of course, that's fine. I just sort of...overdid it with my magic.

[He gives a soft, unamused laugh.]

So if you don't mind, I think I need to sit here a moment, until I can move more reliably. That's the hazard of being a robot made to run on electrical magic and the will of my own SOUL.

[A pause.]

Would you like to talk about what you've been doing for the past few weeks? I admit that I find myself curious.

[He coughs loudly into his fist and follows after, clearing out the crud in his lungs to the best of his ability.]

We found some water. Sort of. It's purple. But people have drank it and suffered no ill effects. [It's something at least.] But the cans should have less questionable water in them. Enough for us to survive on.

[He stops to go through what he's salvaged, and offers Snake a flashlight. He might need it more. Miller's been sticking close to camp for the most part. Better to make sure the ones going further with exploring are stocked up.]

As Liquid responded Kaz waited for the inevitable confirmation; he couldn't imagine that Liquid would leave a potentially useful weapon behind.

"Yeah. So far I've been using my baton to cut with." Which sounded odd, but the baton had a sort of light blade attached. "I need something more appropriate for cooking. Especially if I need help."

Really, he didn't know how many people in the camp could cook from scratch as well as him. Or handle minimal supplies to any nutritional value. While Big Boss had the ability to subsist, Miller wanted to manage something a hair more civilized than Naked Snake levels of survival.
pidge_out: (whoa...)

[personal profile] pidge_out 2016-12-08 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[Pidge frowns a little. Not that she disapproves or thinks he's insane or anything. He's just... one of those people. The kind that would insist on keeping all of their DVDs for posterity's sake. Except it's with information and not so much souvenirs.]

Well, sure, I guess. But with a computer you can still have all the information and notes you've made perfectly preserved for as long as you need it to be. And I've seen tech that can translate that data into a visual projection to get that same effect.
pidge_out: (thanks. really)

[personal profile] pidge_out 2016-12-08 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[Shiro's words make her smile again. His unwavering faith in her - in their entire team, really - feels like a real force to be reckoned with. Like he could take on the universe with his inspirational words alone. That's why everyone on the team follows him. That's why he's a great leader.

And the way he squeezes her shoulder has Pidge looking over at him again, with that smile still in place.]
Yeah. It'll work out somehow, right?
pidge_out: (how did you...?)

[personal profile] pidge_out 2016-12-08 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[She nearly gives him a look for that - Come on, who does he think he's talking to? - but instead just sort of smirks to herself.]

That's... probably possible. [Her eyebrows come together and her head tilts slightly to one side in thought.] It could've probably cut out the controls on the approach.
pidge_out: (cut it out!)

WHY THE HELL SHOULD I. I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT.

"I'll say. Can't say I've ever seen batons as cooking implements." Liquid could cook just fine; he wasn't exactly an incredible chef, but he could make something edible. Although considering he was also just as fine at surviving on raw meat... Well, Snakes could do that. Apparently.

He hadn't bothered to shrink the knives down yet, so grabbing one and handing it over to Miller was a simple task.

"Try not to stab too many people, hm?" he joked. "Although we do seem to be doing quite well out here. For now."

[Circuits shiver as his energy flow fluctuates, scan-sense jumbling to just so much junk data. It's audio that flags the sudden approach: steps and voice and presence/contact. Rinzler jerks back from the touch, weapon-hand trying to come up. But he's weak, he's slow—and then, the ID parses, and Rinzler's struggles pause mid-flinch.

Miller is an ally. Miller is reacting to his failure, and unlikely to have been the source. Still, the tension that clings to his frame as Miller ducks under to support it says volumes about how happy Rinzler is to need the help.

His left hand stays locked around his disk, but the black mask jerks sideways in response—he doesn't know. The program's noise clatters out in a harsh scrape, small tips of the helmet searching to each side. Something did this. He's looking for a threat.]

[ At the greeting, Jaegar looks at Snake, as if asking for permission, and Snake nods. With that granted, Jaegar moves closer to Adrien to extend the greeting, nudging his nose against his hand to sniff at him. He might have been something of a terror as a puppy, and he still has his moments, but Snake's put work into making sure he behaves.

He realizes that the Nehada is a sore spot for everyone who came from there. He nods at the mention of Tali, having known that she and Niko became close during their harrowing time aboard that ship. Snake feels much the same about Niko's endorsement, though; if he'd trusted Adrien, that means that Snake can too. ]
I don't think it's something they would do lightly. Wish there was a way to stay in touch, but... [ Snake shrugs. He's going to miss Niko, but that's not something he needs to put into words right now. And he'd rather the guy did what was best for him and Tali.

When asked about Jaegar, Snake nods. ]
Yeah, I used to do mushing recreationally, years ago, so I've got some experience with it. Couldn't really care for that many dogs under this circumstance, though. [ He's content with just the one, even though keeping him safe is just one more worry to add to a long list. ]
soldiergenes: (there will come a time)

week 3 b

[personal profile] soldiergenes 2016-12-08 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[ During their travels so far, Snake has taken note of 76's tendency to stay removed from the rest of the group, both when on the move and when camping. While Snake has been coaxed to remain closer to the group when camping, he's been scouting the outer edges of their caravan too, wanting to get a lay of the land as much as he can without straying too far.

It's unclear what the status is on possible revivals right now, so he isn't going to take too many dumb risks.

Or at least, that's the plan up until they reach the cave systems, and it's impossible not to wonder what's going on in there.

Snake's at the makeshift camp, putting together all of his gear before he makes way, when he catches sight of 76 heading straight for one of the cave openings. It takes a sharp eye, but Snake can see that he's still favoring one leg -- the one that wasn't shot by that mercenary who's got a vendetta against him.

Going in alone at all is a bad idea. Doing it when not 100% is even worse. Snake calls out to him. ]
How's the leg?

[Phaarah gives him a dry chuckle,] I think that's the idea, but it's complicated. No one really believes in the Egyptian gods anymore; they're more stories and tales. But, my world is diverse and there are a lot of gods and pantheons that people do believe in.

[She smiles warmly at him, and pats his hand. There were others out there that needed his help more than she did, and she wouldn't begrudge them that for a little peace of mind.] Of course you were. There is much to do here, so many to help.

[Miller is a paranoid soul even now. Maybe that ebbed slightly for a little while, but the ship going down filled with monsters tends to reset one's anxiety about safety. So Rinzler being paranoid isn't something he's good at alleviating- if anything, when he sees the program looking around for a cause, he does too.]

[But he can do some basic math. They went through the gate. Some people started to act strangely.]

Come on. I want to try something. Come with me. [With his arm around Rinzler's back, caught around his ribs, he starts pulling him back towards the gate. Back through, to see what happens.]

Miller lifted a white baton from his coat, something not unlike one of Rinzler's, only white. He turned it and a light knife erupted from the end.

"Birthday present. Has a stun function, too." Then it was turned off and returned to its spot. Before reaching out to accept the knife. He did note in passing that Eli had become much better in his unfortunate stabbing habits. It's a thought that he'd considered before, but was reminded.

"For now. At this rate, I'm not prepared for it to last. And if it were feasible I'd say we should manage this entirely on our own." Meaning the crew. Unfortunately they were bound by snippets of information that he had no means to coerce. No room 101. Sure there were psychics on board, but he had to imagine if they could gather more information, they already would have.

[The frustrating thing about being without his augmentations is that he doesn't heal as fast as he should, either. 76 knows on some level that he didn't give the injury enough time in the first place, but that doesn't make it any less aggravating. He has a hard enough time dealing with the fact that he doesn't heal as quickly as he did when he was twenty-five, to say nothing of having the ability taken away entirely.]

Functioning.

[Of course Snake can see it. 'Functioning' doesn't mean '100 percent', but 76 isn't going to let him slow it down. He tries to turn the conversation around on Snake, instead.]

Holding up all right?
warandpeace: (Iт'ѕ α qυeѕтιoɴ oғ тrυѕт)

[personal profile] warandpeace 2016-12-08 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. It gives you enough to make the curses worse.

[Miller is used to disaster after disaster. Watching the threats of disease and nuclear war and engaging in constant efforts to save the world, knowing now Big Boss had been in his ivory tower the whole time. To a much lesser extent the Captains have been reminding him of that; he never sees them actually fighting.]

[But still.]

Ahab was about to be attacked while he was weak and in a coma. [Despite being blind to his truth at the time, he'll treat the tale as if Ahab were the center. After all, he told the man that if he didn't accept the sacrifices as having been to save him, they were ultimately a waste.]

So I went out into the field with a group of people. There were things sent after us. They were able to generate a mist. It was so thick we could barely make anything out, outside of our scout warning us there were "skulls in the mist". One by one, their voices went quiet over our radios. Next thing I knew I'd blacked out. That's when I lost my arm and leg. But over time, whatever that mist was ruined my eyes. Unlike with my arm and leg, it took it a little while to lose. I wore my sunglasses anyway, but after that I couldn't see without them.

Anyway. Long story short, they figured out how to fix what our experts couldn't do. With that, and all the things I learned... I was hoping we'd get here and a working Ingress would let us hang onto it. [Instead they get more mysterious bullshit, and no answers. No water, either.]
