beach.
The glass is almost depleted by the time Dorian strides into his view. And with that tiny thing wrapped around his thighs, it does make for quite the view. Not that Bones is looking, of course...
He finishes his drink and gives a glance up at the other man. ]
Hey, you need a drink from the stand? I was jus' about to head back there.
no subject
The man's swimming gears isn't all bad, Dorian rather likes the skull and crossbones patterns. Like a warning label for poison. More than that? A man offering to get him a drink...was this a random act of kindness or an expression of interest?
He was anxious to let it play out.]
How can I possibly refuse such generosity from someone so strapping?
no subject
You could, but then I'd just bring two back for myself. [ He tries not to appear too flustered by the compliment, covering it up with a quipy line and a downward glance as he pushes himself to his feet. ]
So, what's your poison?
no subject
And more the fool would I be for wasting a drink and the pleasure of your fine company. [You don't have to tell Dorian he's laying it on thick, he knows, but there's nothing quite as fascinating as a man with a touch of shyness about him.
Not an opportunity he would squander either]
I'm not terribly picky [not when it comes to alcohol] but I do have a soft spot in my heart for wine beverages.
no subject
In your heart or in your liver? [ Another almost smile peeks out across his features, disappearing only a moment later. ] I'll make it a surprise, then.
no subject
Both, it would appear. [Wine might have been good to the heart, but too much could prove damning to the liver. Such a tricky thing.] I'll wait with bated breath.
[They would have to introduce themselves properly to one another then.]
no subject
He inclines his head, shuffling off in the direction of the beachside stall and returning just several minutes later with the promised drinks in hand. A mint julep for him and a colorful drink for the other man. He offers the second out to Dorian, muttering, ]
Hope you don't mind your wine frozen. [ Bartender said it was sangria, frozen like a slushie and blended with fruit. Not something Bones would really care to drink but this guy, he thinks, might like it well enough.
Once the glass is handed over, he motions for Dorian to sit with him. ]
There a name I can call you by or does everyone jus' call you beautiful? [ Yes. Two can play the flattery game. ]
no subject
I enjoy experimenting, thank you. [Dorian said, the corner of his lip curling into a suggestive grin that one could take to mean anything. Odds were he would enjoy it and if it was too cold he had methods for warming things up a bit.
Glass in hand he accepted the silent invitation to sit, having no problem at all with personal space, even in this heat.]
If I tell you my name will you still call me beautiful? [That rubbed him the right way actually and he was almost lament to give his name, but he relented after a moment.] Dorian of House Pavus. A pleasure.
no subject
Or maybe this guy is just that good of company. Leonard couldn't deny that he wasn't, at least not so far. His eyes watch as Dorian settles in beside him, atop the beach towel cushioned by the shoreline's soft sand. ]
I suppose, since you asked so nicely. [ He teases, waiting for the man to introduce himself before offering his own. ] Leonard McCoy. The pleasure's all mine.
[ He raises his glass, offering up a toast in lieu of a handshake. ]
no subject
He enjoyed flattery and those willing to flatter him, men and women alike, but it wasn't often than men did so openly. Getting him drinks, offering to share a towel with him on a beach, it's almost too peculiar...in a nice way.]
I'll hold you to it. [Yes, do call him beautiful some more, his ego is infinitely greedy.] Leonard McCoy.
[It might be a good thing that he offered up a toast instead of his hand, Dorian was still learning not to kiss hands that were offered to him. Not that this wasn't just as cozy, he leaned in a bit, raising his glass to Leonard's.]
Now if only the sun were setting this would be positively picturesque. [Like something out of Varric's terrible erotic novels, except better.] Tell me something about yourself, I'd like to know more about the enchanting company I've found myself in.
no subject
He might as well indulge himself now while he still can. In drink, rest, and company. The man clinks his glass against Dorian's, raising it to his lips for a sip. ]
Not to mention the biggest romantic cliché of all time. [ That doesn't mean Bones doesn't care for it, though. He does, he's just not going to allow himself admit it. Instead, he just ponders the other man's inquiry, gruffing, ]
There's nothin' that enchantin' about me. I'm jus' a doctor. Been one for a few months since I've been aboard this ship, and for a couple years before that, on the ship I was stationed on back home. A star ship. [ A ship he misses quite dearly. ] Job's not all that dissimilar, really, it's jus' a lot less work now that I'm not in charge of the department.
[ It's been kind of nice, not being chained to a desk for part of the day, shifting through reports and signing off on things. Leaves more time for him to focus on other projects. Research and the like. He turns slightly, giving Dorian an interested look. ]
What about you? What did you do before all this?
no subject
Instead of dwelling on it, however, he stretched his legs out, crossing them at the ankles, sipping his drink idly as he focused on Leonard and what he was saying. The drink wasn't bad actually, against the warmth of the beach it made his skin tingle pleasantly from the chill.]
Well, Leonard McCoy who is just a doctor, I think that sounds rather spectacular. Well aside from the ship bit because I've never been too fond of ships...I'm prone to motion sickness. How fortunate I am that you are a doctor. [and coincidental now that he thinks about it] We might just run into one another quite a bit. I am a Research Technician, they want me to research and catalogue medical issues pertaining to the crew. It's not my area of expertise, I can research well enough, and I can craft potions, but I'm no healer. My interests lie more within the realm of the arcane, inventing different types of magic.
[Which enables him to segue into Leonard's question.]
I'm a mage, and before this I was part of an organization called the Inquisition. I ran away from home in order to help save the world, save the world and my homeland from itself.
no subject
He hums a soft noise of agreement. ]
I'm not fond of them either. I get sick every now and again too, but that's usually 'cause of the turbulence. [ It used to be a lot worse, before all his flight sims and therapy sessions. Now, at least, he doesn't have to lock himself in a bathroom in order to fly anywhere. The doctor looks across at him, his attention a little more curious now that he mentions them working together. ]
If you can do the research, you'll be fine. Just swing by the library every now and again and read up on whatever medical books you can find. And ask questions. They'll be people around you who know what they're doin'.
[ Generally, anyway. It's not like he'll be the only mage working within the medical department. One of the other doctors is a magic-user. If that kid can do it, Leonard has no doubt this guy can, too.
He listens intently to the rest, with a soft snort escaping him at that last bit. ] God, don't tell me you're one of them big damn hero types.
no subject
I don't know. [It was honest, how does one know they're into something they have no experience with? Dorian, himself, wouldn't be very good at it, at least on the verbal end, but on the receiving end...well he did enjoy being lavished on with affections.]
I remember crossing the Waking Sea and landing on Storm Coast, cheery...and so aptly named. Never been more sick than when I crossed that. [Dorian spent most of the time in the hull hanging on to what remained of his innards. Not the most pleasant topic either, fortunately they were on land and these waters were sultry and pleasant, not cold and angry.]
I'll probably have plenty of questions...I know people spend an extravagant amount of time in universities learning the ways and means of how a body functions. As much time as I've spent in the Circle I suspect. [Dorian could read all about renal pyramids in the kidney, but that did not mean he would understand their function in the same way that a doctor did or anyone who had more experience in the subject of human biology. He was visual as a person, but he was also kinesthetic, he had to do and move and touch, see things at work to understand.] I think I'll be able to get most of what I need from the books, but if these maladies have too many...moving parts, so to speak...you will see plenty of me.
[Dorian laughed at that last bit, it was a velvety laugh, a soft and understated thing.] You mean lofty truth and justice, the embodiment of complete self-righteousness, always strutting around in my moral dignity pants? Egad man! Perish the thought. I do want to save the world and my homeland...but there is a hole in the sky threatening to unravel the world. I don't want to die, so my intentions are not entirely altruistic, I am doing it for myself, but I also want to be a representative of what my country could be- once I've finished beating it into submission.
no subject
What do you mean you don't know? [ It's not an actual question, more of an expression of disbelief. This poor sap. Leonard turns his body slightly, facing Dorian a little more fully. ] No one's ever tried to court you?
[ A look of sympathy flickers across his features, not only at that, but at the mention of the Waking Sea and Storm Coast. He could only imagine what that must have been like. Hell, probably, if the boat didn't have a motor or some cozy place to sleep. ]
The captains do like to throw people out to the wolves, that's for sure. I'm sure I can spare a few minutes for you, if somethin' comes up. [ He tilts the edge of his lip into an almost smirk. It might be worthwhile endeavor for the both of them, for Dorian to learn and Leonard to hear about the projects he's been assigned.
Because he's a nerd.]Good. [ He grumbles, approving of the answer with a curt huff. ] I'm glad someone 'round here has some sliver of self-preservation. [ Pot, kettle. He pauses for a moment, though, looking down at his drink and taking a short sip. ]
Still, that's hell of a thin' to put on the backburner. A hole in the sky?
no subject
[Once in a very long while. Sadly, Dorian wasn't that lucky, but he sipped his drink and kept his expression surprisingly neutral regardless of his feelings about the subject on the inside. Those were...complicated things as well.]
Marvelous! [Dorian bumped Leonard's arm with his own, perhaps he could encourage the quirk of his lips into a full-blown smirk.] If it means I get to have the singular pleasure of your company then I would be a fool not to take advantage of any opportunity.
[It would be completely and strictly professional, of course.]
I am rather discerning and I do happen to like living. [The gruff response only draws a chuckle from Dorian who happens to like that sort of thing. He'll gladly give his life for a worthy enough cause, but he will not do so wastefully making him more cautious than those around him.]
Mmm...yes! That hole in the sky has created several Rifts in my world, these Rifts happen to spew demons who are, for the most part, tethered to these Rifts...for how long, I do not know.
no subject
Don't abuse it. [ He warns, his tone uncharacteristically light, teasing like the expression that flits across his face. A smile tugging at the corner of his lips again, not breaking out but there just long enough for someone to blink and miss it. ]
Now you're jus' pullin' my leg. [ Demons coming out of holes in the sky? He can barely fathom such an image. He tries to, though, at least for a moment, his expression shifting to one of consideration. ] I thought demons'd crawl out of the ground, not fall from the sky.
no subject
That makes it all the more tempting. Like poking a sleeping dragon with a stick. [Dorian did return that little quirk with a full blown smile of his own, idly wondering what it would take to put a full, more lingering smile on Leonard's lips.]
Quite the contrary, unless you like that sort of thing of course. [Dorian laughs softly at his turn of phrase, he amuses himself, really.] There are a number of things I could kid you about, but Demons from the sky? Not one of them. Nor would I kid about how fetching your eyes are.
[What? He has a thing for sympathetic eyes.]
no subject
Only when I'm the one doin' the pulling. [ He gruffs, trying to add to his point with the tone even if it sounds more put-on then genuine. It's just one of his charms, the whole pretending to be grumpy thing. ]
That's... good, then. [ His expression flushes for a moment but recovers from it quickly, his gaze straying away from Dorian then moving back. A little more confident than before. ] I like a man that's honest.
no subject
Oh? Is that how you like it? Well When it comes to who is pulling and who is being pulled, I'm rather flexible. [What exactly are they talking about? Whatever it is, Dorian has just transformed it into some kind of innuendo.]
It seems we have that in common. [It's the reason why Dorian reaches up to briefly brush a thumb against Leonard's cheek before that flush can recede completely. He is an irreverent flirt, after all.] I like honest men as well. There are so few kicking around where I come from.
