"Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us."

As he strolls down the boardwalk leisurely, he catches sight of a familiar yellow monster. Hmm, Alphys!! Judging by the number of bags she's got surrounding her, she's had a good time too. Mettaton is glad to know it. He's not the only one who needs a break. She's needed a break for way longer than he has, in fact.
Drawing closer, he comes up behind her. Given the distinctive click of his boots as he walks, it's not likely he'll surprise her unless she's really spacing out. Not unlikely, but he likes his odds on that.
"Checking the view?" he hums, moving to a place near her which is not occupied by purchases. "Looks like someone had a little shopping spree!"
no subject
"Hah," she laughs quietly. Having stared into the blackness of the sky and water alone for a while now, it's taking a few moments for her usual nervous fake energy to flow back into her face. She gestures at the water.
"It's not really the view, but the... lack of a view?"
They can talk about her purchases later. Oh, you will be hearing all about her new collector's items and figures, MTT.
"You know," she continues. "It reminds me of... the drop-off, back in Waterfall."
Where she met Undyne.

Crossing his arms, he sets them on the railing and leans forward, glancing into the poorly lit depths himself. He can't see what's so appealing, but then, he had infrequently asked any of the questions that mattered, when it came to Alphys.
"I like it here, I hope we stay a while!! It's calm."
Yeah, okay. Calm with everyone around digging the party life or shopping til they literally drop. That's super chill, Mettaton.
no subject
"I like it too," she says, swiftly diverting the topic of conversation to something more benign. Easier. Turning away momentarily, she starts rustling around in her shopping bags.
"Although I wouldn't call it calm? It's actually really exciting!" she declares. Finally, she turns back around, holding up a box to show the robot. "For example, I got this today!! The cashier told me it's limited edition."
Inside the most embarrassing of cutesy, short-skirted catgirl characters.
no subject
"It's lovely, darling!! And limited edition no less? A great find, they really do have something for everyone here!!"
No, really. He's sooo excited. Let him just build up a second.
"What else did you buy~?"
no subject
Ignoring Mettaton's attempt to talk about something other than her trashy cat girl figure, she opens the top lid and starts to take out the inner plastic packaging.
"Every once in a while, something like this would wash down to Waterfall," she explains as she attempts to free the figure from the plastic. It seems to be secured with tape, so she squints and tries to pick at it with a nail. "But, you know, like everything else the quality was so-so. I had no idea how vibrant and detailed the paint was on these!"
Finally she gets the figure out. She clutches it gleefully and gazes for a moment before holding it up to show Mettaton. Inside, she knows that Mettaton doesn't really care. He isn't into anime the way she is. But the same unsettled anxiety that brought her to the end of this dock, staring into the empty oceanic abyss below, is pushing her along now. She has to talk about something.
"Isn't it great?" And as if remembering his question, she turns back to her bags. "I also got the full box set of the anime she's from! Maybe we could watch it together."
no subject
Mettaton leans down, tilting his head to get a better look at the figure. Well, she's right, this figure does look better than the ones in her collection. He can give her that much.
"It does look lovely!! Much less damaged than the usual. We'll have to go out looking for more decent ones tomorrow if this is the only one you've gotten so far!" he proclaims. What's a little personal sacrifice in the face of being an actual BEST FRIEND? "As for watching anime...mmh, I'm sure I can squeeze you into my busy schedule, Alphys dear! Of course, keep in mind that we have work to do on the ship, and not all the time can be spent on watching your stories!"
He has his own job. And it's very demanding!! Sort of...not really, he's not popular anymore.
"So ah, not that this conversation isn't riveting but I'm afraid I've forgotten to ask you where you're staying on the ship! I'd love to pay you a visit in the future, because we can't get all the gossip out in one solitary night."
And ohhhh does he have gossip. So much gossip. Girl talk, show talk,
his crush on Papyrus, opinions on crew mates. The whole nine yards!no subject
Turning back to her bags, she carefully stuffs the figure box away and talks over her shoulder.
"W-Well, um, actually I was just about to head out for some... some nightlife! You know, some girl drinks, some french fries doused in cheese sauce," she says quickly. It's a total lie; she was about to go back to the ship and bingewatch one of her box sets. "We could just h-hang out now! If you wanted!!"
no subject
"Well!! If that's really what you'd like to do, then we can just drop this all off to a shuttle service and have them send it off to your room! I'm happy to accompany you on your trip through the nightlife, though perhaps not for any food or drink~"
Obviously. He's a robot, he can't do that.
"Of course, I'm more than happy to chat with my dearest friend and be the responsible sober party!!"
no subject
Does such a thing exist? Alphys has no idea, but it would make sense. And it would be good to finally be free of some of these bags already without having to go back to the ship. She begins to heft them all up from the floor.
"Let's go, then! I can't think of the last time we really sat down and talked?" she says happily. "Y-You know, because we're so busy lately."
Really, it's probably been months. Mettaton has been so nice to her since she arrived on this ship. "Busy lately" is her euphemistic way of giving them both an excuse.
no subject
As they begin to walk, he finds himself feeling a sense of normalcy that he hadn't ever since he'd shown up here. No family, no friends, and people he hadn't taken all that much time to learn about. This was better. This was familiar. And even though he's had some missteps, Alphys' excuse for them both is accepted as usual. Because Mettaton prefers to opt for blind excuses and optimism this time 'round, as usual.
"Don't worry, we'll get plenty of talking done tonight!" he assures Alphys, and she's probably quite aware of his busy mouth, so it's practically a promise. However, his first point of discussion isn't to talk about himself this time. Instead...
"How's it been here, on the Moira? Are you adjusting well?"
no subject
She walks alongside him and falls into temporary silence. It feels less normal for her, and more... nostalgic. Familiar, but not routine. Her eyebrows relax and her eyes soften as she shuffles along, her footsteps accompanied by Mettaton's heels.
She'ld be happy just letting Mettaton rattle off whatever petty thought floats into his mind, as long as he'll let her listen. He never did demand too much from her in that regard, and she's always appreciated that.
"I think so," she answers, glancing up at him. "Everything's fine so far...? I keep waiting for the catch."
no subject
He shakes his head softly, giving a soft laugh.
"Sorry darling! Undyne hasn't arrived yet, I'm afraid we have no big catch yet," he decides on. Not his best humor, but it's way better than saying 'well two months ago, I ran into some rather beastly creatures that reminded me of those things you kept in your lab.'
Still. It's evident that he's been chatting with Sans a bit much. That joke was awful.
no subject
"She'd piledrive you for making a crack like that," Alphys says, a bit more seriousness and warning in her voice than Mettaton might have expected. She goes quiet again, letting their footsteps fill the silence.
"What do you think she's doing right now, back home...? What everyone is doing?"
no subject
What are they all doing? Well...especially considering that there were time-based discrepancies between the monsters already present on the Moira. That's an unhappy thought.
"I don't know, darling," he finally says, shifting his grip on the bags he's holding. It's a subtle show of discomfort on the subject, a very unusual response from the automaton. He doesn't let it linger though. "I bet everyone's perfectly fine back home!! At least the ones who aren't here!"
He gives the lizardlike monster a grin.
"I'm pleased enough that you are here, of course!!" Yeah, that's selfish. True, perhaps a little flattering, but also quite selfish.
no subject
She turns her head to look up at her friend desperately, eyes hopeful. "Hey... what do you remember happening, Mettaton?"
They haven't talked about this yet. It's concerning, considering what the human had hold her about what they remembered.
no subject
There's a pause as he considers the fact that Alphys' memories may not sync up with his.
"Why, what's the last thing you were doing, darling?"
Hopefully it's just a difference of months, because, well. After all that he and Papyrus had talked about...he just...sort of wanted Alphys to remember the same things he remembered.
no subject
"W-Well, I was in the lab building a deluxe version of my seaweed-to-ice cream machine," she finally says. "Empress Undyne wants one for the palace. I mean, what she really wants me to do is figure out how to break the barrier, but that's business as usual, haha. The ice cream machine, that's something I could actually do!"
no subject
"Empress Undyne?" he repeats, raising an eyebrow. That's news to him, as is the barrier. That didn't exist anymore as far as he knew. Of course...of course things were different between them. "It seems we have a different set of memories, Alphys dear. I have no recollection of Undyne ever being the ruler of the Underground."
no subject
"...I see. Well," she says, "you wouldn't be the only one, so it's not that weird. Um, I don't know how things are different for you, but for me, the human escaped out of the barrier and Undyne took over after... Asgore's absence."
no subject
Like he had with Papyrus, Mettaton finds himself extremely curious how many things were different for Alphys. He couldn't bring himself to inquire any further on the matter though, however, because he wasn't sure he'd like the answer. On the same note, he doesn't really want to answer.
"It's certainly different for me," is all he offers. After an awkward pause, he shakes his head and attempts to change the subject. If he keeps his mind off it, it doesn't matter, right?!
"Anyway, come on!! Let's get a move on, or else we'll miss all the night life! We can talk about home later!!!"
