Yeah. I don't know. Disney is okay, I guess, but maybe the aliens... Maybe there's something to be learned from them. [Indirectly, of course.]

I could. [He partially nods his head in agreement, tilting it to the side on that thought.] But I- uh, it's not as simple as going up to them and asking them stuff I wanna know...
[Never mind that it is. He'll clarify:] I don't know them or anything. And maybe that's true; that I movies aren't that close to the truth, but the only other thing to do is explore this weird ship and hope not to get in trouble. [Which is actually not a bad idea. Of course he was doing that already, but he seems to have more ideas now that he's said it aloud.]
no subject
[And fairly human looking, all considered. Nihlus was the only one he thought fit the true 'alien' mode.]
Most of them probably won't get pissy over a few questions. I mean, pretty sure the captains are technically aliens too. Well, old ones. And I know at least one of those is a bit of a pushover.
[He nearly laughs at the implication that exploring would be the bad thing.] Pretty sure they don't have any rules here against exploring. Killing, yeah. But you're not going to get into that much hot water looking around unless you, like, break into someone's room.
no subject
Once he's done with his thought, he straightens his head and gives a single nod.]
Alright. Maybe I should give them a chance, if that's the case. I have to think on what to ask them. [After all, what can he lose. Gaining information and getting to know who are the friendly faces certainly won't hurt. He won't outright say that he doesn't trust the captains though.
His look puzzles a small bit at the near break of laughter directed at him, the face it creates on Peter's face that is. But to him, it doesn't seem so stupid to ask (however indirectly as it may be) what the rules are.]
Okay. So going anywhere you want is fine, as long as it's not anyone's else room. [He nods at that. His tone comes off in a way that almost seems to say: This is good to know.]
no subject
[He won't outright say he's not, but with all the others running around he feels the need to put it out there. The less conflict to be started on the ship, the better.
He doesn't mean to be rude about with the laughter, it's just a product of everything he's seen, been forced to obey in the past few months.]
Basically. Even that probably wouldn't get you in trouble with the staff, but the person who's room you broke into? Everyone would probably just pretend not to see them kick your ass. Oh, and there are some places locked. Apparently the old captains' wanted people to stay out. [He shrugs.] Up to you if you think it's worth pissing them off for it. I mean, they had one door locked because of a dangerous prisoner, so it might be your head if you break in on him.
no subject
[Is all he can say to that. Though this is a thing he feels he'll have to do, get used to doing with one non-human a time. On his own.
It's alright. He forgets about the laughter soon enough. Seriously, the part about locked doors and prisoners on the ship catches his attention.]
What? They keep prisoners here. [Seems funny after they told him there's a no tolerance for killing rule, is all.]
no subject
[He says it dryly, having spent enough time in the cells himself to have an opinion on the matter.]
They used to have trials here and everything. It was a lot of bullshit; a few days in for murder, a slap on the wrist for anything less. Whatever. They changed the rules a while back. But right now I'm talking about this alien thing they got locked up. He's attacked people before when they broke into his room. Ploiatos. I'm just saying, you want to stay away from that.
no subject
[Of course that is his opinion, though. In his world there's no giving people second chances 'cause it almost always backfires. He isn't aware of Peter's circumstances nor has he never been locked in a cell before
not yet.]It used to be different? [He raises his eyebrow as if to ask 'How?'. Also at how this kid seems to have admitted to killing someone to land himself in a cell... Carl's next question is one of the three his dad taught him to ask people to get a sense of their character.] How many people have you killed?
no subject
[He snorts at the question, staring at Carl evenly. It's not like anyone here couldn't find out about Rinzler, it's a matter of public record now. But he hadn't murdered anyone, just been sent away for setting the trap. For the attempt.]
None. I'm not one of the crazies you need to look out for. Should I be asking you the same question? [Part of him thinks someone younger shouldn't be capable of murder. But a louder part remembers Chara.]
The trials, the three day kinda of jail treatment; that's how it used to be. Now they claim any violence will get you kicked off the ship or stuck in the cells indefinitely.
no subject
[In this case, though, he's getting that it's not gods or deities or whatever that controlled it, but actually the technology that is so likely controlled by the captains. Even if not completely, there is some responsibility on them for peoples that arrival here.
He relaxes again at the answer of no. Peter doesn't seem to be lying. And yeah, he probably should be asking Carl the same question right back. He's not entirely innocent by a long shot, but he's not the type to kill without cause either. Still, pauses momentarily in reaction to having it thrown back at him.]
Only when I needed to. I don't do it because I want to. And I'm not one of those crazies you need to look out for either. [He may as well be honest.]
I see. [He nods, showing that he's got the picture that its different now.]
no subject
[He'd heard a little of a place almost like this, a worse place, from Niko. Was it the same? Alice had apparently been there with him and it took Peter months to catch on to that.]
A lot of people here think that what people did before the ship doesn't matter anyway.
[Most people won't hound Carl about before, is what he means. Peter himself isn't sure what to think of that. He knows most of the people he stays with here had killed, multiple times and for stupid reasons. He still trusts them, but it had taken a while to get there.]
Just try to stay out of trouble, like I said. Fly under the radar and I doubt you'll need to worry about any of it.
no subject
Anyway, he's telling the truth. As for the rest, he's not sure what to make of Peter telling him it doesn't matter. Because of course it matters. Always will. But at the same time, he isn't sure if he is just saying that to make him like he is not being judged when he is or if he truly means it. So he just shakes his head, saying what he knows.]
No. It does matter what people did before. It matters what I did. I'm just being honest about it.
[Seems like the only way to make trust, after all. He's tired of trying to hide it.]
Sure. If I can, I will.
no subject
[It wouldn't hurt to be sure.]
Not according to the rules. Look, I think it matters for a hell of a lot too. There's people if they showed up here- [That he doesn't know what he'd let himself do. He'd probably try to choke Erik if the man came. He'd probably rethink his stance on murder if the people who'd experimented on River or Wanda showed up.]
As far as most people here care though, it doesn't matter. It's not going to get you in hot water. That's all I'm saying.
no subject
No. Yeah, uh, it was on earth, but not like earth. There was everything you needed: land, houses, places and things you could wish for a certain times, even your own house or pets from home, but that was it. It was kinda like we were in a box. Nothing beyond that was allowed.
[So very different from a spaceship, he means, but at the same time, almost just as limiting.
Anyway, he nods, glad that at least this guy seems to agree that it matters with what's happened before. Also he is a little surprised inwardly at how his implying that he's done bad things doesn't seem to mean much to Peter either. It provokes a thought that he may either be foolish or trustworthy going forward. Carl isn't about to decide that without getting to know him better though.]
I guess that's their decision then. I don't know if I could trust someone who lies about their past 'cause they're likely still the same. So few people I met are good anymore.
What about you? You are helping me... Why?
no subject
Sounds weird though. I mean, shit happens here and we've had a bad run for a while but at least we get to regularly see new places. It's not all the same all the time.
[Which for Peter, even being stuck on just the ship was something he could deal with as long as his sister was here.
Peter takes the nod with a rueful smile. It's not entirely foolishness, it's just that he knows it would be hypocritical to react to the news that Carl had done something bad before. Peter had spent most of his time since puberty as a thief, he let a murderer out of prison for the thrill. Not so long ago he'd thought about killing someone; even if he didn't go through with it, he couldn't pretend he wasn't capable. And then there was the matter of everyone else he knew here, the things he knew they'd done.]
Sounds like you've come from some rough places, kid.
[He snorts. Mostly, it's just that Carl is younger and Peter's always had a soft spot for kids. A big brother instinct he couldn't shake.]
We're all stuck here. We might as well try to get along, right? Besides, it really doesn't cost me anything to point out how things work around here. Actually it gives me a totally good excuse not to be working right now.
no subject
Huh? Like what? Like where?
[The fact is that he had killed before, and that makes him more skeptical of Peter with what the guy had said before. Still, maybe, he's not above giving him the benefit of the doubt or forgetting. He eyes him (intently with just the one eye) as he listens further, going over that answer. And, for the most part, he finds himself satisfied with his reasons to be helping.]
Sure. It's rough where I came from. But nothing me or my people couldn't handle. Just how you survive. [He admits.]
And true enough. It looks like we're stuck here for the time being. And I'm all for trying to get along.
no subject
[But he's smiling. Peter likes an excuse to talk.]
There was a weird whale planet, weird as in flying whales. We've ended up places that were basically intergalactic shopping malls. Places where we could visit home or other planets temporarily. Then there's been some bad stuff. When I first got here we were at a planet where kids were being kidnapped and we had to save some of them. I still don't really know what was going on there. There was a planet that was destroyed, that was before I got here, but their people ended up attacking us over it.
[And there was the outpost. But Peter was not going to bring that up, not unless he had to.]
Most people would say life was more than just surviving.
[But what did he know? He may believe he'd screwed up his world by his own actions, by freeing Erik, but Peter knew he'd been brought here before he had to deal with anything more difficult than suburbia.]
Keep that attitude in mind and you'll do fine around here.
no subject
[And if he didn't see some crazy stuff already, he wouldn't even believe it. He's curious most about one thing, though.]
What happened to the people that attacked you?
[He purposely ignores the comment about what people would say. He is not in the mood to get into how sometimes that's not always true. He just nods to keeping it mind.]
no subject
[Peter says for Carl, smile crooked and forced. As far as Peter was concerned, thing were mostly good, most of the time. Or at least it had been at the beginning. Lately though, it was beginning to be more like nightmare.
Like what he was about to tell. The smile drops.]
They killed a lot of our people, we killed a lot of their's. At the end someone found a way to send them all away with the Ingress. No one's figured out to where yet.
no subject
That's the way it goes usually. Glad it's over for both sides, though. [By the sounds of it though he pities the other group sent through the Ingress more, only 'cause he wasn't here at that time.]
no subject
no subject
[Because, from what he has gathered so far, no one on the ship will likely go down without a fight. And honestly neither will he. His stance is that he has no part in what happened and that he won't take anything from anyone trying to punish him for it too.]
no subject
no subject
Yeah. There's no way anybody would sit and wait to be killed. [Not unless they've given up or they were too innocent, he thinks. He's not someone who has given up though or someone to want to leave to leave behind the innocent.]
