old but unfamiliar faces
"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

At first, this month seems no more unusual than the previous one for those who have been aboard the Moira for any amount of time. The crew who had landed on the slaver outpost were rescued, and with everyone aboard, the ship has pushed forward into the darker parts of the Runoff. Anyone arriving through the Ingress follows the same routine—moving from the Ingress room into the Medbay for their physical and contract before being assisted by seasoned crew members and helped to their assigned decks. But all familiar things must eventually come to an end: two final travelers come through the Ingress. The first, and most noticeable difference between them and all the others, is their clothing. Both are dressed in standard Moira uniforms, though they bear the insignia of one sharing the same rank as Captains Cúrre and Thán. After a moment to take in all the people on the platform ahead of them, one of the two latest arrivals approaches one of the Ingress panels and begins to manipulate the controls. The Ingress completely shuts down. Unlike before, however, there isn’t an imbalance felt across the ship; everything remains normal and stable.

Utilizing the computer systems located in the Ingress room, they send out the following message to the crew via the MID:

To all those aboard this vessel: I am Ira Phirun, assigned captain of the Moira. First Mate Egan and I will be commandeering all rights to the ship as soon as word is sent to those currently in charge. Expect a more detailed report as soon as all records and logs in Navigation have been reviewed by myself and the First Mate. All questions will be answered in a timely matter. For now, there will be no interruption of daily routine or reprimand if conduct among ranks is broken. Thanks for your time.

Heading to Navigation, the Captain and First Mate, for seemingly unknown reasons, approach Navigator Manasseh and have her show them all records and logs of the Moira. Those working in Navigation when the Captain and First Mate arrive will see Mana greet them in a professional manner. Oddly, the Captain and First Mate act very familiar with the Navigator. They review all documents, but when they come upon news that the Ploiatos is on board, their mostly friendly demeanor shifts quickly. The Captain issues a sharp order, unintelligible to those who are close enough to overhear parts of their conversation, and without any warning at all, Mana loses consciousness and collapses right there on the bridge. Within minutes of this happening, the ship as a whole falls into a low power state with basic functions only. Mana’s MID alerts Medbay, and without hesitation, Captain Cúrre places her in cryo with strict orders to those who work there not to disturb the unit.

As promised, the Captain and First Mate soon address the crew.

lights down low
The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill.

reuse & recycle
The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet.

new jobs, same faces
The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment?

[there are no other means for her to interact with things... Though it seems she might not have reacted even if Jensen had been taken by surprise. Smooth movements and organic lines does not dull the edge of her robotic nature at all.

She does politely pull the items out of Jensen's arm trajectory when he does a sweep. Then she nods in understanding, picking up a few more heavily broken items]

I am unaccustomed to this type of technology, though there are individuals aboard with skills better suited to repairs. It might be simpler to salvage what we can for the time being and leave repairs to another time.

[there's a small menagerie of ruined items floating in front of her at this point... And she's either doing a very good job ignoring Jensen's confusion or she simply doesn't care. Lack of emotions is both a benefit and a hindrance really]

[If he's being honest, part of the reason he'd swapped over to the (futile) task of repairs had simply been how mind-numbing the sorting was starting to get– but he doesn't bother mentioning it. For all he knows, her kind doesn't even have a concept of boredom.]

Hard to argue with that logic. But kind of makes you wonder why the people who do have those skills aren't the ones in my position.

[He hadn't quite been hit with the "this is all just a dream" feeling that he's sure others have had by now– but the more he starts to think about the situation, the more ridiculous it starts to seem. So naturally, he's been trying not to mull it over too much.

Adam watches the items carry themselves through the air for a moment before turning his attention back to Fi herself, an inquiring tilt to his head.]
You mentioned your assigned duty, before. What is it you do here?

[then it's probably for the best that he leave the menial tasks to someone who has no emotions. Fi has been quietly picking up the pieces that are beyond help and while it hasn't made too much of a dent in the pile, it's at least cleaned it up a little]

The vessel has been operating at 38% efficiency. Many people have not been assigned tasks that they are most well suited for... However, based on observations, it seems that main skill among crew is one's ability to eliminate their enemies. With that fact, they may be considering secondary or tertiary abilities when assigning jobs.

I have been assigned the title of 'Counterintelligence Officer'. [the items stop rotating leisurely for a moment, like she's lost in thought] I confess, I have only a 13% understanding of that role requires of me.

[she turns to look at Jensen]

Where would you like me to place these ruined artefacts?

[Frankly, he only sort of cares where the junk goes at this point– but he can only imagine what sort of comments about "efficiency" she might have for him if he says as much out loud. A spirit guide is really starting to seem an awful like an AI the more Fi talks (so maybe his first guess wasn't so far off the mark, then.)

Summoning up a fuck to give, he glances around and spots a heavy wooden crate – the sort that might be used to ship materials. He clamps a hand on the lip of its open face and brings it over, one-handed, by the table and motions at it before continuing.]

That's pretty much what I'd been doing before all of this. [The whole Ingress thing, he means.] Security. Making sure that the people who'd want to hurt us don't.

You'd think on a ship full of people who're good at "eliminating their enemies," everyone else would get the hint and keep away. Sounds like that's not the case.

[He's heard a secondhand account of what'd happened with the Caducans, after all. And he – as most people can probably agree – thinks it was a bit of a cluster.]

[wow Jensen, rude. Just because she's centuries old doesn't mean you should have such foul internal monologue. Luckily for everyone involved, Fi wasn't the sort to go eavesdropping in people's heads despite having telepathic abilities as well. There's not much a sword can do with everyday gossip after all]

[at the sight of him lifting the crate one handed, there is a quiet hum... Was it surprise? She seems impressed at any rate.

Her body remains turned towards Jensen to let him know she was listening to him still, even as she moves the ruined items from the table to the crate. They're dropped rather unceremoniously into the container, much less care taken to organizing the destroyed/loose/junk items than the ones that seem reclaimable]

Security... A task similar to the knights of Skyloft, then. Understood, I will keep this definition in mind going forward.

...

The organization was not optimized, but simply separated into three groups. All attempts ended in vain. The refugees of Caducan Primary would accept nothing less that the lives of the crew as reparations.

The likelihood of our exploits being communicated across worlds is at most 20%. Not many planets we have visited appear aware of our actions.

hanzer: (there are more shades-less jensens here)

[personal profile] hanzer 2016-08-12 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
[He hopes, vaguely, that he hasn't just accidentally programmed her or something – here's hoping that Skyloft's no Skynet – but there isn't really much else for it, is there?

Adam's frown deepens as she continues with her explanation and there's a pause before he finally says, at length:]
Probably for the best that way.

[It's one thing to be the biggest baddest kid on the playground, but quite another to make oneself a target with little to back up that swagger. A more organized ship might end up the former– but as things are, he suspects that the latter is more along the lines of what'd happened with Caduceus.]

Can't say I'm surprised, though. Trying to keep even a small squad together is a job on its own – a crew this size, made up of people who're only reluctantly working together? "Optimization" isn't the first thing I'd be worried about.

[He says, sounding as if he's speaking somewhat from experience– and he is.]

[with most of the damaged beyond repair and garbage items sorted out the way, Fi starts to group items that look like they're meant to be together - based on type and some based on broken pieces that can be repaired. She does this quietly, letting Jensen put his thoughts together... She seems benign enough.

People will find that Fi is much more agreeable than most other AI. She served her Goddess and the Chosen Hero before all others, but Link had decided to assist the people of the ship so Fi will also offer her assistance when she can]

You speak from experience. [Thanks, Fi, great observation] There is a change in leadership now, so perhaps the ship will experience a streamlining of skills and jobs based on the previous captain's experience.

...

[She stops sorting the items and stares straight at Jensen]

Does my presence bother you? I will admit that I have very little experience when it comes to interacting with others. It was never my duty to speak with more other than the Hero and those who would come to aid him in fulfilling his destiny and so I find myself at a loss here aboard this vessel, where there are many people - human and monsters - from many different worlds.
hanzer: (no seriously why do i bother)

[personal profile] hanzer 2016-08-16 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
[And no change in leadership is without its hiccups. He doesn't need a statistic from Fi to know to expect that much, at least – he's heard enough grumbling from some of the other crew members already, enough to confirm his assumption.

The sudden question gets Adam to look up and lock eyes with Fi (one pair behind darkened lenses, the other pair... not really eyes, at all) a look of mild surprise briefly passing over his features before it's quickly corrected. His brow furrows.]

Believe me, you'd know if you were bothering me. [Was that a question of propriety, or what? In any case, the answer's truthful enough: as short on patience as he's been lately, he'd ensure that any annoyance is swiftly and decisively removed.

He shakes his head.]
I can pretty much guarantee you aren't the only one at a loss here. We're all trying to figure this out. Even if it's not your duty, or you don't have experience dealing with anyone but your "chosen one"– at least that's one thing in common you have with everyone else here.

[Might be a little (a lot) shaky as far as common ground goes– but they make the best of what they've got.]

[She wonders if that's the case... Miller had been reverent and both Sans and the Poe had treated her like they would have anyone else. Something about Jensen was different (though she wonders ifano

There's another soft, melodic hum in response, one that seemed almost thoughtful. Maybe Jensen's words were meant to be comforting, but the spirit is incapable of properly experience emotions... And even if she was, the thought of being directionless and without purpose would have likely caused her distress. After all, when every moment of your life was dictated by your creator, to be abruptly cut loose is a rather daunting change in pace.

One blue sleeve rises to 'gesture' at the table in front of her]
I have done what I can to help expedite your current task; the artefacts destroyed with no chance of repair have been removed. The task of maintaining the status of the Cargo Bay should become easier over time as the extraneous items are removed.

If you need further assistance- [a stop, then;] Please do not hesitate to call for my assistance.

[Well, that she has. That certainly is a pile of crap that he's not even going to attempt to try and salvage.]

Gotta say, you know how to make a first impression. [A pause and then, at length, he nods.] I appreciate it, Fi.

[Which sounds about as sincere as his rasp is capable of sounding. Adam motions at her with one hand, in turn.] And likewise. If you're ever lost on what counterintelligence entails, I mean.

[It's a selfless offer, on one level – obviously, he of all people is pretty inclined to make sure a job like that is done right. But on another level… Fi seems pretty tuned into the ship's happenings. Having someone like that to call on could prove to be pretty useful, in the long run.]
