Craig Boone | Fallout: New Vegas
(cw: alcoholism, mentions of the slavery plot, typical Boone stuff)
[All things considered, things on the ship could be a lot worse. Where Boone came from, the Moira is still a step up even in this sorry state. He's not stuck sleeping on a crusty, bloodstained mattress in a broken down shack in the middle of the wasteland, and the food isn't irradiated to hell and back, so as far as he's concerned he's still living a pretty comfortable life. As for getting rid of things that aren't necessary... he really doesn't own a lot. So even if he was getting used to the luxuries the Moira had to offer, a step back isn't really a big deal to him.
Of course, he's not completely unaffected. He doesn't find it easy to sleep at the best of times, but ever since they left the slaver's outpost he's been suffering from nightmares every night. Rather than lie there thinking about it, he'd rather get up and take a walk around the ship. And after hearing that all unnecessary items were going to be confiscated, he may have indulged in too much of the whiskey he'd stashed away. Just incase that counted as an unnecessary luxury. He'd also hoped it would knock him out for a while, let him sleep even for a few hours. Back in Novac, it had been the only way to get himself through the day. Tonight, he's just not that lucky.
So now he's wandering the darkened hallways, sleep deprived and drunk, and lost in his thoughts. Meaning if someone happens to be coming down the hallway he's in, he's not really in any state to be moving out of the way fast enough. Of course he's going to collide with someone eventually. And after a moment of steadying himself, trying to seem like less of a mess than he really is, he steps back and squints at the stranger from behind his shades.
...Yes, his shades. Why is he wearing sunglasses in the dark? It's one of life's great mysteries.]
Sorry. Didn't see you there.
☄ Search and mark | Cargo Bay
[Rex is a good dog. He doesn't make much mess, he's fairly quiet, and generally he does as he's told. He can get aggressive if he thinks he or his people are in danger, but so far on the ship he's had no real reason to attack anyone.
Besides being a guard dog, however, Rex is also trained to find things that could be useful. Ammo, medical supplies, food, that sort of thing. Boone has no idea how the cyberdog can tell there's less food to go around, but who the hell knows what he's picked up in 200 years? Either way, he's started finding gifts on his bed. Small things, like a roll of bread or an opened, mostly empty box of painkillers. He's not sure where Rex got them, but for the most part he just shrugs and accepts it. It's not hurting anyone, right?
But then Rex starts bringing bigger, more valuable things back, both for him and Elle, and he starts getting a little concerned. Do these things actually belong to someone? Were they just lying around in the Cargo Bay or something? Things might have been different back home, but there's no reason for him to keep other people's stuff here. He wouldn't want people to think he's been stealing from them, especially when he doesn't need or want any of it. He has enough on his plate without having to deal with that kind of mess.
Obviously, the answer is to sneak around the Cargo Bay with a small bag of everyone else's stuff, hoping nobody sees him. To anyone coming in it probably looks bad, but he's actually trying to put things back. He just hopes nobody catches him with something of theirs. "My dog took it" is a pretty lousy excuse.]
☄ Wildcard
(Start whatever here or hit me up at
for the baby
He probably should have been paying more attention himself, but either way, he ends up with Boone walking straight into him. Whoops. He shakes his head when he apologizes.]
It's fine. You're--
[He stops when he really gets a good look at him.]
Well, no wonder. Bit dark to keep wearing those things, isn't it?
[What is it with some people and sunglasses? Honestly.]
no subject
Liquid.
[He blinks, then lowers his shades.]
...Yeah, I guess.
[It's not much better, but still. He's not actually sure why he put them on. Habit, maybe.]
You can't sleep either?
no subject
Yeah. Don't know why. It's just been difficult.
[Might have to do with a lot of things he's had to think about that he's seemingly okay with on the surface, but that's not a big deal. Not to him. Right?]
...Are you alright?
no subject
Yeah, I'm... yeah.
[Well, no, he isn't. And the smell of whiskey on him probably says as much. He doesn't feel like giving Liquid his life story, though. He's an okay guy, but he still doesn't really know him that well.]
Are you?
[He's partly trying to shift the attention back onto Liquid, but it's still a genuine question.]
no subject
I've been worse.
[Sure, he'd been sold into the business of murdering people for entertainment, which he'd found himself getting surprisingly okay with, but at least it wasn't torture, right?
Right?
He shrugs.]
Think I'll probably head to the library for a bit before I try the sleeping thing again. Or not. Haven't really decided. Where are you headed?
no subject
Hadn't really thought about it. Just needed to do something.
[He looks back at Liquid, hesitating for a moment.]
...Mind if I tag along?
[He's not really one for reading even when sober, but maybe being alone with his thoughts right now isn't the best idea. He'll get it if Liquid would rather do things on his own, though.]
no subject
[Sometimes the very act of walking around's something you just have to get up and do. Even if you're not heading to the training room to punch some virtual grunts.]
No, go ahead. As long as you don't mind me spending too much time looking around.
[He doesn't normally have company when he goes to the library, especially at such a late hour, but he's not going to really complain about having company, either.]
no subject
[He starts walking with Liquid, wobbling a little but otherwise doing a pretty good job of staying in a straight line considering how much he's had to drink.]
You go to the library most nights?
no subject
[Sometimes he likes to punch, sometimes he likes to read. He is a man of many interests. If he notices his wobbling, he certainly doesn't mention it.]
Have you been there? They've got a rather impressive selection.
no subject
Reading's not really my thing. Think I checked it out when I first got here, but I didn't stay long. Training sometimes helps, though.
[Though most of Boone's sleep problems come from negative thoughts and nightmares, and working out doesn't always help those much. He has to really wear himself out first.]
no subject
[Some wisdom from someone who refuses to give up, apparently.]
I can get just as absorbed in a book, though. But then sometimes I find I've spent the whole night reading and suddenly I've got things to do, and at that point it's not a good time for anyone.
no subject
[At the very least, it feels good to have an outlet of some kind for his anger. Otherwise, he just bottles it all up and then drinks too much in the hopes of making it go away. It doesn't work.
He smiles very slightly as he replies.]
Know someone else like that. Think he'd read all the time if he could. Never could do it myself, though.
[He's tried, but he usually just... doesn't find much enjoyment in it.]
no subject
[After all, he needs time for working out and venting frustrations and any number of other things one might need. But he can definitely clock up a lot of time in a library.]
I used to read anything I could get my hands on when I was young, and it sort of stuck. I know it's not for everyone, though. At least there's options, right?
no subject
[Or straight up covered in blood. Whose blood? Hell if he knows.]
no subject
[Sometimes there was blood too, but he generally had an idea of whose it was. Because he'd spilled it in the first place.]
I think the library might have comic books, and I'd bet they'd have all their pages.
no subject
[He wonders if he'll even be able to read in this state. Well, no harm in trying.]
I'll check it out. ...Wonder if they'd have the ones from back home.
[He doubts it, but stranger things have happened and people have been teleported here from all over time and space. Why not books?]
no subject
[He might have done something like that once, but he wasn't normally in the business of making collages.]
They might. I mean, things used to just sort of come out of the Ingress whenever it felt like spitting them out, right? They'd most likely send a lot of books that way just because that's where books go.
[Although he did get a few good ones in the mail once.]
no subject
Yeah. Guess I could.
[He's not really all that creative, though. He'd probably just get bored.]
Only thing I got outta the mail so far is music. Wasn't really my thing, so I just put it in a drawer and forgot about it. Still not sure why I got it.
no subject
Don't even have to write your own books, just paste them together. Or you could make a picture or something.
[He crosses his arms, looks a bit thoughtful.]
I got some strange music I hadn't asked for, but I actually liked it. What did you get?
no subject
[The trials of a drunk, sleep-deprived man trying to remember the name of something he barely glanced at before never looking at it again. He rubs his face, hand dislodging his shades briefly.]
I dunno. Kinda feel like that's not right.
no subject
[Night time is the best time for a conversation about good names for bands, right?]
Eh, it's probably close enough, anyway. Got some sort of monkey band myself. I think. Good, whatever it was.
[Soon the library comes into view. Liquid almost forgot that's where he was headed.]
Ah, there we are.
no subject
[Boone only vaguely remembered where the library is, so he's just been following Liquid without thinking much about the destination.]
You know where things are? Don't really feel like getting lost in here.
no subject
[Worry not, Liquid's figured the place out pretty well.]
Sure. It's not like it's going to be a huge labyrinth or anything. You'll be fine.
no subject
[He doesn't usually have a problem with getting himself lost. It's just dark, and he's more disoriented than usual. He knows better than to trust himself completely right now.]
If you can point out the comics I can probably find something on my own. Can come find you once I'm done.
[As long as he knows vaguely where to go, he should be good.]
