old but unfamiliar faces
"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

At first, this month seems no more unusual than the previous one for those who have been aboard the Moira for any amount of time. The crew who had landed on the slaver outpost were rescued, and with everyone aboard, the ship has pushed forward into the darker parts of the Runoff. Anyone arriving through the Ingress follows the same routine—moving from the Ingress room into the Medbay for their physical and contract before being assisted by seasoned crew members and helped to their assigned decks. But all familiar things must eventually come to an end: two final travelers come through the Ingress. The first, and most noticeable difference between them and all the others, is their clothing. Both are dressed in standard Moira uniforms, though they bear the insignia of one sharing the same rank as Captains Cúrre and Thán. After a moment to take in all the people on the platform ahead of them, one of the two latest arrivals approaches one of the Ingress panels and begins to manipulate the controls. The Ingress completely shuts down. Unlike before, however, there isn’t an imbalance felt across the ship; everything remains normal and stable.

Utilizing the computer systems located in the Ingress room, they send out the following message to the crew via the MID:

To all those aboard this vessel: I am Ira Phirun, assigned captain of the Moira. First Mate Egan and I will be commandeering all rights to the ship as soon as word is sent to those currently in charge. Expect a more detailed report as soon as all records and logs in Navigation have been reviewed by myself and the First Mate. All questions will be answered in a timely matter. For now, there will be no interruption of daily routine or reprimand if conduct among ranks is broken. Thanks for your time.

Heading to Navigation, the Captain and First Mate, for seemingly unknown reasons, approach Navigator Manasseh and have her show them all records and logs of the Moira. Those working in Navigation when the Captain and First Mate arrive will see Mana greet them in a professional manner. Oddly, the Captain and First Mate act very familiar with the Navigator. They review all documents, but when they come upon news that the Ploiatos is on board, their mostly friendly demeanor shifts quickly. The Captain issues a sharp order, unintelligible to those who are close enough to overhear parts of their conversation, and without any warning at all, Mana loses consciousness and collapses right there on the bridge. Within minutes of this happening, the ship as a whole falls into a low power state with basic functions only. Mana’s MID alerts Medbay, and without hesitation, Captain Cúrre places her in cryo with strict orders to those who work there not to disturb the unit.

As promised, the Captain and First Mate soon address the crew.

lights down low
The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill.

reuse & recycle
The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet.

new jobs, same faces
The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment?

[ Angela had been throwing herself into... anything she could, really. It was her easiest method of settling into a new place, taking time to get to know those around her and her surroundings as she works. It should be no surprise she has that same focus in her workout, using it as a chance to zone out and sort her thoughts.

When a familiar voice calls out to her, it slices clean through her thoughts and bright blue eyes snap right up in the correct direction, stopping so abruptly the momentum of the pedals nearly lifts her from her seat. ]

Genji!

[ Her face lights up with her smile, leg swinging off over the back as she jumps off the bike and trots up to meet him, almost reaching for him but stopping just shy of it, fingers twitching. He sounded in good enough spirits, but it's hard to say... just how he was feeling, here. They'd kept in touch but it's been so long since she'd last seen him. He's changed, since. ]

It's so good to see you, my dear friend. How are you doing?

[ She'll just. Towel herself off here real quick. ]

[ Oh this is terribly awkward. Does he go for a hug right away? He's almost overloaded with how many familiar faces he's been seeing here. The good doctor is definitely one he's more relieved by. He hovers awkwardly for a moment longer. ]

Well considering we have been accidentally kidnapped by a space ship, I am doing well! How are you? How is- how has work been? Have you seen anyone else? Reinhardt is here as well! My brother, too.

[ Pause for an uncomfortable moment for that to sink in. ]

And the man from the news. He is less friendly.

[ Having a rifle pointed at you is 'less friendly' in the Genji book. ]

I'm glad to hear it, besides the space ship part. I've been worried, I haven't heard from you in a while! I've been doing well myself. Work never ends, of course, and I was just in Iraq before being brought here. Taking prosthetics and prepping people to use them, getting some smaller villages taken care of. How have your travels been?

I did see Reinhardt! We arrived together. Let's see, there's you two of course, but I've also seen Jesse and Fareeha; have you seen them yet? [ A beat, and then her expression falls to one of concern. ] Your brother... I believe I met him, too, then.

I'm so sorry, Genji.

[ DON'T FEEL AWKWARD ANYMORE BOO she's going to reach up and hug him to her, slow enough that he'd have the chance to stop her hands before they go to his shoulders, because really, she hasn't seen him in person in quite some time and she doesn't know if he wants to allow a hug or would rather not be touched, but with that sort of news she can't quite help herself. They can continue this conversation in each other's arms, can't they? She'll hold on as long as he'll allow her to. ]

The one in the visor? I met him as well. He wasn't so bad, was he?

[ Please, tell her all about his abuse so she can go beat his ass. HE WAS BORDERLINE NICE AND NON-VIOLENT WITH HER SO HEARING OTHERWISE WILL JUST OFFEND HER AND MAKE HER CHASE HIM DOWN. ]

Yes! I have! I am so glad to see everyone again. It is good to hear you are still doing good work, Doctor. My travels mostly ended in Nepal, I have spent most of my time there with Master Zenyatta. It has been good to me. Perhaps it is something about the fresh mountain air that fills me with new energy!

[ A pause, a little more awkward. ]

Yes, my brother is here. I have already spoke with him. Relations are tense, but it is to be expected. I still have hopes for him.

[ Aw yesss. He's going for that hug then. That's nice, and he gives her a little squeeze. He's aware how very... metal he is. It can't be comfortable, but hugs are too nice to pass up. Especially from old friends. ]

Oh he was not bad? [ He laughs. ]

He shoved his rifle to my chest and was very cross. I do not think he likes Overwatch.

[ Uh yeah. Duh. ] He did not harm me though, so perhaps he is a potential ally. I do not blame him for being frightened in our situation.

Would you ever expect otherwise from me? I'm so glad you've been finding yourself in your travels; Zenyatta sounded wonderful the last time you spoke of him. I trust everyone has been doing well in the mountains? You've been keeping well-fed? I'd love to visit whenever we get back home. It sounds beautiful.

And I will also have hope for him, for you. If you can make peace with him, it is certainly not my place to judge otherwise; and he was polite when we spoke. I don't think he realized who I was which is just as well. He likely wouldn't have entertained me as long as he had otherwise.

[ Angie has never minded his body; not when she had been the one to put him into it, forcing the suffering of that adaptation upon him. They had had their ups and downs together, their relationship a brutal rollercoaster of raw emotions and lashing out when the pain flared, hollow at other time, tentative when all was said and done. To have finally reached a middleground with him and be able to connect had been...

Such an amazing relief. She's relaxed against him, relaxing further with his arms around her, resting her cheek at his collar. If she were to focus, she could hear his heart beating strong beneath the plating. It sets her at ease. Would that she could stay like this, but eventually they would have to part when someone entered the room, or he grew uncomfortable with her hanging off of him.

The gasp when she hears about 76, however, is muffled into his neck and she sounds positively offended. ]

He did what? Whatever for? He knew I was involved with Overwatch and nothing happened. When was this?? I was hoping for an alliance, but...

[ Hearing that he'd been threatening to one of her own? Not so sure on that anymore. ]

Oh yes, I would love to show you around Nepal. I am afraid it is not very exciting there, but if a peaceful escape is what you like, it is just perfect! The air is so cold and clean, and it truly gives you an appreciation for life.

The monks and people there are so accepting. It is truly my place now.

[ He sounds a little homesick, talking about it like that. ]

My best advice is to let Hanzo be for the time being. He is going through a lot, and has not grown much in the past years. I believe there is still a good man in him. He is my brother, and he loved me so fiercely, I believe he will come around given time.

[ He's fine hugging as long as she needs to, it has been an absurd amount of time, and he is something like... her creation after all. Every detail and working of his systems, his life, is owed to her and her team. ]

Well, he did not harm me, but he was very grouchy. [ Genji laughs. ]

It was like a dog barking at a car, I think he is scared. I was scared here too, but I found people I know and love. I do not think he has anyone like that.

A peaceful escape, is it. I may have to try one of those sometime. [ Admitted with a laugh, spoken as if she'd never known such a thing; certainly in her recent years they had been nonexistent, which had dragged on long enough to feel as though it were closer to the truth. Switzerland tended towards cold and clean as well; yet Switzerland is far more painful to return to. There were too many painful memories still lingering there. The touch of homesickness leaves her squeezing him a little tighter, resting against him a little heavier. ] It will always be waiting for you. I know we'll make it back home soon enough, Genji.

I'm sure I saw it. It may have been just a glimpse, but he has his honor. That's plain to see. Yet there's more holding him upright than that. I only hope that it won't take nearly so much time for you both.

[ Angela has never thought of Genji as her "creation". Her patient, her friend, her comrade— her family. All of these and more, but never her creation. Far more had gone into Genji's life and shaped his mind and body well before she had laid hands on him. She had invested countless hours, days in him, staying at his bedside after the surgery and each subsequent tuning to be as grounding a presence as possible, to soothe him when he'd needed soothing even if he often wouldn't have it; but that was building a relationship, not building a "thing". She will never claim any ownership over him. Genji was his own person. She'd only ensured that he lived to continue on as such. The way that Overwatch had done him was dirty, and it still brought shame to her this day to have been a part of it, but there was nothing to be done about the past. She'd saved a man's life and had dealt with the technology held over his head to do so. Angela Ziegler was as much to blame for allowing it to go down as it had.

The news that 76 hadn't harmed Genji was a relief even if she's still cross. ]

I'm inclined to agree; the second I saw Reinhardt come through the Ingress, I haven't felt relief wash over me so violently in a very, very long time. [ The only thing her mind brings to the forefront, really, is her early successes with her nanomites and the first few missions she'd had to sit and wait for in Overwatch, unable to do anything but hope and pray for everyone's safe return. ] I think it best we give the man his space, but I am always an advocate for extending a friendly hand. We'll see what happens moving forward.

[ Finally, finally, she'll ease off of him, looking a little sheepish if endlessly thankful at once as her arms slide from about his neck to rest her hands on his shoulders, still staying in the circle of his arms. ]

I must smell terrible! And here I've simply been hanging off of you instead of letting you inside; what was it you were coming to do?

[personal profile] gluteusexmachina 2016-08-20 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps we can consider this a mandatory vacation. [ Genji offers this hopefully, honestly he knows he's grasping at straws here, but he has to find some kind of positive angle. ]

I can only hope, Doctor Ziegler. [ You can almost hear the smile in his voice. ]

We can only do our best for everyone. The important thing is that we are all in this together.

[ Ah yes. He releases her with a soft laugh. ]

It is fine, really. I was just exploring, actually. Seeing what there is to be seen, hopingg I would run into a friendly face. My wish is granted!
