"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

It's one second too late that Adam realizes he's staring, and he turns his head away a little too quickly, grimacing. He's been on the receiving end of stares like that too many times to feel good about doing the same thing to someone else. When he turns back around – fully-facing the alien this time – it's with the darkened lenses shielding his eyes, his implants making the dim lighting a non-issue. ]
We'll go with that. [Sounding more like he's trying to convince himself than anything else...But at least with his eyes covered, it's easier to keep his expression its usual blank neutral.] Sorry, things are a little– fuzzy. None of this [a vague gesture at the whole of the ship] is exactly helping.
[Not a great excuse for accidentally starting off a conversation with "I should be dead," but it's all he's got. Already, he's regretting the momentary lapse in control.]

He observes the way the man sharply turns his head, as if he realized he'd been staring. While he's more than used to it by this time, Thane finds that he genuinely appreciates the other's self-awareness. He hadn't been quite aware himself how tiring he'd been finding the generalized, wide-eyed incredulity until just now. Not that he could, or did, blame anyone for staring. He does remember the first time he'd seen a human, after all. Even when expecting the encounter, it is impossible to completely squash curiosity. When not expecting the encounter...well.
He nods his head to acknowledge the man's apology.]
There's no need to apologize...I doubt if anyone newly arrived expected this would be how their day would go. Myself included.
no subject
Surprisingly, conversation – commiseration – does a lot to settle the unease in the pit of his stomach. Easier to stamp down and ignore, this way. While he's not luckily enough to call his second brush with death a distant memory, at least he's no longer reliving it.
Adam takes a deep breath and exhales.] What's your name?
[The more salient question might be "what do you do," because – alien or not – the signs of training are easily recognizable in the way the guy holds himself. And, you know, the way he'd managed to creep up on him in the dark like that. If the guy were human, Adam might take him for a fed, maybe a spook, but… Who can really say, now?]

[He's left off giving his surname to those he's introduced himself to before now. He provides it to this man as...a professional courtesy of sorts. The sense he gets from this man - from the way he holds himself, from his carefully controlled expression - is that of a kindred spirit, or a comrade in arms. Not precisely an assassin, or not in the same capacity as Thane himself, but the discipline in his manner is unmistakable.]
And yourself?
no subject
[It's a strange relief, to be able to actually introduce himself to someone. Too many of the people he'd "met" in weeks past had already known him or read his file – a pleasure he'd rarely been fortunate enough to share, to his annoyance. Apparently all it takes to escape that sort of treatment is to get transported on a goddamned spaceship in another universe.]
Didn't realize there was anyone else out here. [A jerk of his head indicating the hallways, encroaching shadows and all.] You've got a light step.
[There's a hint of a question in his tone underneath its deliberate impassiveness, as well as an implication that getting past his notice is a bit of a feat. There's interest there.]
no subject
[And he's not just saying that to be polite, although he is, of course, polite. His handshake, if accepted, is firm and confident without any of that posturing, contest-of-strength nonsense some men get into their head is necessary when shaking hands. When Jensen mentions his light step, his lips quirk briefly upward in a wry smile.]
I've been told that before. I apologize if I alarmed you; such was not my intent.
[Sorry, bro; if you haven't read his dossier then you must be at at least friendship level 5 to unlock this tragic backstory.]
no subject
Pleasure's mine. [Even if it doesn't necessarily seem like it. A bit more quickly than he means to, the hand's withdrawn and he folds his arms close to his chest. He shakes his head.] Not alarmed, just… Impressed.
Wasn't your fault, either way. I was– [His mouth thins into a narrow line.] Distracted.
no subject
Once the handshake is finished, he tucks his own hands behind his back, as he normally does, gripping his right wrist with his left hand and relaxing his shoulders. He nods at Jensen's explanation.]
Understandable. Unpleasant memories do have a way of preoccupying the mind to the exclusion of the here and now.
[Oh boy do they preoccupy.]
Perhaps a change in scenery is in order?
[Wanna hang out with Thane, instead?]
no subject
Something unreadable passes over his expression, and his reply is almost his usual, automatic "I'll pass." For a while now, he's always had some excuse to go it alone– but to his surprise, Adam finds it difficult to come up with the same excuses here. What does he have to lose, really?
At length, he finally says:] … Yeah. Maybe you're right. [He shakes his head.] Got a feeling these hallways are going to get old pretty quickly, anyway.
[An inquiring look, one brow raised – what's Thane got in mind?]
no subject
I've been spending the past hour or so familiarizing myself with the ship's layout. Given the size of the vessel I'll need to devote several more hours before I can claim a passable knowledge of the place, however.
[Also it's given him lots of opportunities to surprise and alarm basically every single human being he's addressed thus far. What a fun day.
Not.
He gestures with one hand to the hallway they're both still standing in, indicating the direction he had been walking when he had encountered Jensen.]
The hallways may get old, but at least the familiar is less likely to surprise, don't you think?
no subject
But regardless, Adam follows the indicated direction, keeping pace by Thane's side. In motion, that quality in the way he carries himself just standing still is all the more obvious: he moves with the easy assuredness of someone who's had training, and experience on top of that. There's none of the vulnerability he'd shown earlier (however little there'd been, even then) but maybe it's just that he's finally gotten around to hiding it.]
I have to keep reminding myself it's a ship at all. If it weren't for the windows… [The stars are, he has to admit, a very sobering reminder that it's space out there. He shakes his head.]
no subject
[And one Thane can relate to as well, in any case, given his occupation and life experience in general up to this point. Jensen sounds like he has a buttload of experience in that vein as well. Although curious, Thane resists the (not very strong, admittedly) urge to pry. As a fairly introverted, private individual himself, he has a fairly decent sense of what constitutes inappropriate questions to ask your new acquaintance.
Unlike Commander Shepard but w/e he still likes her.Thane moves easily himself, with his usual grace and economy of motion - automatic now, after a lifetime of moving in such a manner.]
Is this your first experience with space travel?
no subject
Where I'm from, something like this– [he rolls his eyes upwards behind their shields, though only the slight tilt of his head upwards gives the gesture away] – is still just science fiction.
[That is, unless the goddamned Illuminati were keeping bigger secrets than he'd ever suspected. Even so, this seems... A bit beyond even their scope.
He shoots a glance around at Thane.] I'm going to guess it isn't yours.
[And he realizes, immediately after the words leave his mouth, that there's no reason he has to have a spaceship just because he's an alien– but it's too late, and the thought's already out there. Far be it from him to want to be culturally insensitive or anything.]
no subject
Hmm. That seems to be the case with nearly everyone I've spoken with so far.
[He wonders if that's indicative of something, or if he's trying to see a pattern that isn't actually there.
It's probably too early to tell one way or the other, yet.]
It's not, no.
[Not culturally insensitive at all, friend, no worries!]
The hanar made first contact with my species not quite two hundred years ago; space travel has been a familiar concept to me since I was old enough to understand what it meant. Human beings, I believe, first achieved FTL capabilities about forty years ago. They're a fairly common sight in most places now.
[There's your explanation for why he's not weirded out by your pink skin and facial and body hair, Jensen. You're welcome.]
no subject
But then, it's a bit too early to tell if the machine's operating under some sort of logic or not. From the sounds of it, not even the captains (old or new) know.]
Forty years ago, the furthest away humans had been was to our moon. Guess we just had enough going on down on Earth, that space stopped being as much of a priority.
[The augmentation industry had expanded so rapidly, so explosively, that it's almost as if all focus had gone into developing that to the exclusion of all other fields. Hard to imagine a world where that might've not been the case, where they could've been making contact with whole other civilizations. He curls the fingers of one hand, almost unconsciously.]
no subject
I have spoken with a few people here who are familiar with space travel, but overall I think you may be right. It also seems strange that a supposedly random process appears to pull mostly humans to this place.
[Nothing to be done about it, though. At least, not currently.]
Hm...Different timelines, different histories. This is bound to get confusing quickly. Where I'm from, the year as humans count it is 2185. I spoke with a gentleman earlier who told me it was 1984. What year is it for you?
no subject
The moment quickly passes, and he adds: 2027. So practically the dark ages.
[The statement's certainly an ironic one; the sophistication of his cybernetics (which still holds up even against some of the other people from the future he's met) speaks to that. But maybe there's a hint of… Bitterness, as well? The year had been the culmination of an age truly cast in gold, and not just gilded in it.
Lucky him – he'd gotten a first row seat to see exactly how it ends, just before coming here. No telling what comes next, now.]
no subject
That is something I've noticed about some of my closer human acquaintances.
[It's a harmless quirk in nearly every case, which he fully recognizes. It's dangerous in others, unfortunately, and that is where problems seem to spring from.]
Gaining access to your planet's moon is no small achievement. The drell hadn't even advanced that far before the hanar arrived.
[Baby steps are cool, Jensen; no one's judging humanity (well, Thane isn't, at least) for focusing on cool cybernetic upgrades instead of exploring Mars.]
no subject
[To be an active player, rather than a passive one. In control of one's future. Framed like that, he can't really call it vanity.
He shakes his head.] Either way, I can't say this is how I imagined my "first contact" to go. Less of a "take me to your leader" situation, and more casual conversation involved.
[Matter of fact, Adam can imagine a certain cybersecurity specialist freaking out over a conversation like this taking place at all. Mostly because he's probably not asking the right questions, or something. But honestly– screw it. This is alright, whatever this is.]
no subject
[Though it worked out quite comfortably for the drell. Or, at least, for the 375,000 who'd been lucky enough to be evacuated from their dying home world. So for a tiny minority of the drell, it had worked out.
Well, nothing's perfect.]
Oh? I hope that's not too much of a disappointment.
[If Thane had any interest in Jensen's leader, he'd just find that individual himself.
And Mr Francis "No Fun" Pritchard can suck an egg]sorry again for disappearing aaa
