old but unfamiliar faces
"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

At first, this month seems no more unusual than the previous one for those who have been aboard the Moira for any amount of time. The crew who had landed on the slaver outpost were rescued, and with everyone aboard, the ship has pushed forward into the darker parts of the Runoff. Anyone arriving through the Ingress follows the same routine—moving from the Ingress room into the Medbay for their physical and contract before being assisted by seasoned crew members and helped to their assigned decks. But all familiar things must eventually come to an end: two final travelers come through the Ingress. The first, and most noticeable difference between them and all the others, is their clothing. Both are dressed in standard Moira uniforms, though they bear the insignia of one sharing the same rank as Captains Cúrre and Thán. After a moment to take in all the people on the platform ahead of them, one of the two latest arrivals approaches one of the Ingress panels and begins to manipulate the controls. The Ingress completely shuts down. Unlike before, however, there isn’t an imbalance felt across the ship; everything remains normal and stable.

Utilizing the computer systems located in the Ingress room, they send out the following message to the crew via the MID:

To all those aboard this vessel: I am Ira Phirun, assigned captain of the Moira. First Mate Egan and I will be commandeering all rights to the ship as soon as word is sent to those currently in charge. Expect a more detailed report as soon as all records and logs in Navigation have been reviewed by myself and the First Mate. All questions will be answered in a timely matter. For now, there will be no interruption of daily routine or reprimand if conduct among ranks is broken. Thanks for your time.

Heading to Navigation, the Captain and First Mate, for seemingly unknown reasons, approach Navigator Manasseh and have her show them all records and logs of the Moira. Those working in Navigation when the Captain and First Mate arrive will see Mana greet them in a professional manner. Oddly, the Captain and First Mate act very familiar with the Navigator. They review all documents, but when they come upon news that the Ploiatos is on board, their mostly friendly demeanor shifts quickly. The Captain issues a sharp order, unintelligible to those who are close enough to overhear parts of their conversation, and without any warning at all, Mana loses consciousness and collapses right there on the bridge. Within minutes of this happening, the ship as a whole falls into a low power state with basic functions only. Mana’s MID alerts Medbay, and without hesitation, Captain Cúrre places her in cryo with strict orders to those who work there not to disturb the unit.

As promised, the Captain and First Mate soon address the crew.

lights down low
The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill.

reuse & recycle
The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet.

new jobs, same faces
The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment?

[He had spotted the man while being processed and assumed it a trivial matter to simply wait and approach him later, but Spock now wonders if his decision is erroneous due to the untimely announcement. While his attention does keep to the message relayed to him and his fellow passengers, Spock spares glances toward Jim and cannot miss the unmistakable concern that flits across his captain's face.

He waits, longer than he normally would, as he sees Jim make use of their newly equipped technology to converse with their newly self-appointed captors. Only when the conversation seems to have concluded does Spock approach, calmly with his hands at his lower back as he oft does.
]

Jim.

[It is a knowing tone, likely familiar to his friend by now, but it begs nothing more than Jim's attention, even if the relative concern lurking in the tone may be evident to a small few.]

[ Jim doesn't understand all of what is going on, but none of this feels right. He's off-kilter, out of his depth, and in unfamiliar territory. He wants to be back on his ship, with his crew and family, who need him on the first mission this far into deep space in history.

Instead, he's here. It is beyond frustrating. Apparently, he is not alone, either.

He looks up, a little shocked. God, did the transport thing do that much of a number on him and watching the feed with all the new information, nevermind all of the medical stuff---? ]

Spock! God, I---I'm sorry I must have missed you back there. Guess you saw the announcement. [ He tries not to itch at the spot where he got jabbed. ] What do you think, so far?

You ok?
rustledbyjimmies: (fascinating)

[personal profile] rustledbyjimmies 2016-08-02 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
[Jim's shock and reaction do little to comfort him. This is not where they, most importantly he, belong, and it is even more evident now than moments before.]

C— [No—] Jim, I believe that query is more suited for me to inquire. [He doesn't need to touch Jim to sense his distress. Reading it comes with having known him for a while now.]

Perhaps you would be willing to impart to me your thoughts? [As always, Jim is welcome to keep them private as well. Spock knows he is not privy to everything in his captain's life.]

My duties with Starfleet have been... [He tilts his head slightly.] —interrupted, but that does not deny me concern or aid for a friend.

[ Considering the sudden news and changes that seem about to be implemented, he's kind of glad Spock is using his name instead of his rank. Captain doesn't seem to fly around these parts really well, and he'd rather keep a low profile until absolutely necessary. ]

Yeah, I'll be fine. I just---It's a lot to take in. [ The dim lights do nothing to ease his concerns and the memories it brings up still, and his chest feels a little funny with Spock there asking after him. How's our ship? ]

Interrupted is a word, yeah. [ He laughs a little hollowly. ] I think we've both been interrupted. I'm not sure I trust what's going on here. I mean what actually happened on the bridge?

Something doesn't feel right to me.

[He nods in agreement. The events on the bridge are an obvious concern, considering the circumstances, and Spock knows better than to forget it entirely in favor of mindless cooperation. The takeover does not sit well with him either, but he has a better sense of control when it comes to his concerns than his friends. It worries him that Jim is so afflicted, especially given Jim’s gut feelings and seemingly senseless intuition that has proven itself to Spock several times now.

Of course, there is also the matter of the Enterprise, and though he knows he cannot confirm the exact state of things, Spock has faith.
]

Regardless of interruption, I believe the Enterprise is in good hands. [A light reassurance for Jim, if he should take it.] As for the present matter, I do believe that we must tread carefully. Even as disagreeable as the matter is, questioning their authority will likely only instigate conflict on our parts.

[Not that he feels Jim does not already know this. While before, he may have doubted, Spock knows that Jim isn’t unaware.]

Perhaps if we could acquire more information, regarding this universe, this time, and this ship. [He suggests it knowing how obvious it likely already is, but it’s his own way of hinting to Jim what his personal intent is, Spock not always being keen on the most direct wording when it comes to his personal thoughts and plans.]

[ Jim is notably concerned with their situation here, but yes, he's also concerned for his ship and crew back home. Are things still happening business as usual there? If that is the case, then they'll notice they are gone soon, and Sulu will take command. If not, then---who knows. ]

Treading carefully is definitely something we should do, but we need to find out what is going on. [ He sighs, and reaches up to rub the back of his neck. ]

We could see if we could access something on their network, or reroute power to a console. I might be able to get past their firewalls if they have any, but I'd have to see it first. [ A beat. ] I suppose of that doesn't work, I can always use my new---duties as an in.

I'm apparently their Interpersonal Relationships Officer. [ Can't Spock hear the joy in his tone. ] What about you? Where did they put you?
rustledbyjimmies: (this simple feeling)

[personal profile] rustledbyjimmies 2016-08-05 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[Interpersonal Relationships Officer. Well, both of Spock's eyesbrows hike up his brow at that, but he does little else to mask his amusement beyond tilting his head to the right slightly.]

And interesting decision. [Yes, that is the corner of his mouth quirking the tiniest bit upward at your expense.] It would seem that our captors have a sense of humor.

For myself, I am to be a Chronicler, one who documents the events and history of the ship. If there is to be more direct access to their network, I would imagine my position may be of an advantage, given the archival nature of such logs.

[ Wow, Spock. Rude. So rude. Put those eyebrows back down, sir. ]

Yeah, it's hilarious. [ Laugh it up, Pointy. He's so done with you. ] That's how it would appear, Mr. Spock.

It would be. It might get us some answers we need that they aren't keen on getting us if we play our cards right. I'm not sure how I feel about being a liaison between myself and two people I don't know or trust, never mind the rest of the command crew that is suddenly not in charge.

[personal profile] rustledbyjimmies 2016-08-12 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[While he could go on teasing Jim, there’s little reason to genuinely humiliate him on any front, so he digresses from it, the amusement slipping from his face and his expression growing more somber.]

Indeed, that is my hope. Regarding your own position, I feel it can still prove advantageous. You have been given access to the thoughts of our fellow crew under the guise of aid. While there will certainly be instances of needless information being provided to you, you would be capable of gauging the general temperament of the other crew beyond the command which we could use to bolster any plans we may develop.

And as for your abilities, I do not doubt for a moment that you would not be capable of resolving any issue that develops, even between strangers.

[The real question is how much Jim cared to because even as diplomacy was his strong suit when he chose it to be, Spock could often sense an underlying discomfort in his friend that implied his dislike for dancing about with words.]

Yeah, I've only managed to talk to a few people so far. I'd rather not call it a guise unless I have to. A lot of these people may not even be from a time that has anything to do with space travel if I'm understanding this Ingress correctly.

[ He shakes his head a little and sighs. ] As for the general temperament, it's pretty dismal at the moment. My own included. [ While he would be hard pressed to admit that to anyone else, Spock and Bones are different. ]

You know I'm still getting used to this whole Jim Kirk diplomat thing, right? I usually end up with my shirt ripped more often that not.

[ And he will do it. He knows he can do it. It's just weird. While they trained for this at the Academy, he guess he never figured it for a thing he'd actually be good at in practice. He prefers to go for honesty as opposed to veiled discussions. Here, though, honesty didn't seem to be something so forthcoming from all parties involved.

Which didn't bode well for peaceful talks in the long run. Another thing to keep an eye on. ]
