"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

Nomo #027
He won't be able to use the room he's been assigned to sleep. Although the room itself is private, it is still far too public for him to lower his defenses so completely as to let go of consciousness. He'll have to find somewhere else to do that. It is private enough, however, for meditation, so for that, at least, he'll be using it. It's not a complete substitute for sleep, but with it he can stretch the intervals between necessary unconsciousness quite nicely.
He'll sit there quietly for as long as things remain peaceful and the only immediate sound is the quiet, rhythmic respiration of his roommate. Chances are high he'll still be there when the other awakes, even if (or especially if?) it's hours from now.]

He sags back onto the cot, passing a tired hand over his face. ]
Sorry. Hope I didn't, uh-
no subject
[While he realizes how sensitive some humans are about the noises they make in their sleep, that same sensitivity amuses him to no end. If this particular man is offended by his suggestion, he'll apologize, of course. Based on his experiences with the Normandy's human crew, this could go either way.]
It was not disruptive.
no subject
[ He says it with more bemusement than embarrassment, albeit with a slight red tinge to his face. It's probably lingering fever. ]
Dick Grayson. I don't think we've met.
no subject
[That's definitely amusement in his voice there. And no worries about your red face, friend; it's still pretty dark in here, and in any event, Thane is discretion personified.]
We haven't. Thane Krios - It's good to meet you.
[For a given value of good, given the overall situation that's brought them together. On the plus side, though, Dick hasn't reacted at all to his appearance, so that's a nice change of pace, even if it might not last when the lights come on.]
Are you new here, as well?
no subject
For all that he can't see much in the dark, he has a sense that the man isn't human. It's only occurring to him now that maybe he should be feigning some surprise about that. But it's still Dick Grayson who'd know (of) the Omega Men, who'd idolized Superman for a lifetime, who'd nearly married a Tamaranian. And it's Dick Grayson who can't quite bring himself to put this alien through that charade. ]
Yeah... I've gotta say a lot of this is bit of a reach for me. We Earthlings don't tend to get out much, where I'm from.
no subject
[Based on what Thane's deduced about how the rooms are assigned, what he's seen, heard, and learned poking around on the ship, aaaaaand plus or minus the depth and length of Dick's nap, anyway.
And he gets mad points for both noticing Thane's alien nature and playing it totally cool. Gold star for you, Dick. That was extremely polite of you and Thane appreciates it.]
That is a common theme I've been finding among those I've spoken with. I can't help but wonder if the Ingress' process for pulling people here is not quite as random as the crew here claims it to be.
no subject
If, uh- they ever decide to share the method behind the madness.

But it's hard to blame them for wanting to keep their ship running. [ Even if his gut says that's far from all this entails. He's silent for a moment. ]
Looks like I'm your new Head Field Medic, by the way. [ This he offers with a lopsided salute. ]
no subject
[He tilts his head and responds with a small smile to that subject change.]
An auspicious posting. I've been assigned to maintain the ventilation ducts.
[Which he's perfectly content with. He has no real marketable job skills other than "killing people", but the work he's been assigned will doubtless make it that much easier to move quickly around the ship, and provide a nice cover besides.]
no subject
[ He hardly counts as one, he's sure. It's a mystery like everything else, the moving pieces underneath hidden. ]
So what does the, uh- maintenance of ventilation ducts entail?
no subject
I'll admit, it did feel rather as if my assignment was a result of a blindfolded throw at a dart board.
[Another shrug]
Cleaning, mostly, or so I'm told. I imagine I'll find out once I begin working.
no subject
Maybe sometime after he's made a mental note of Thane's probable schedule. It'd be awkward to run across him in a mask and spandex. You never know what people remember. ]
So what kind of work are they tearing you away from?
no subject
[And you're definitely going to want to be extra careful there, friend - Thane remembers everything.
...He lets out a tiny huff of amused breath at that question.]
I was in the middle of helping in an organized effort to save all sentient organic life in the known galaxy from extermination by a race of intelligent machines.
[You know, as you do.]
As they don't seem to be a threat here, I expect I'll find my new occupation to be quite peaceful.
no subject
Right now that isn't quite Gotham, as hard as he feels the pull to get back. "I want to show my dad I can survive the impossible mission he sent me on" and "the woman I love might finally be a little into me too" suddenly feels a little pale by comparison. ]
So, what happens if the "time stops in our home worlds theory" doesn't pan out? There a chance you sitting it out for a while is gonna tip the balance in favor of the bad guys?
no subject
Politicians.
[He says that one word as if it explains everything. Because, honestly, it does. It's a universal concept where he comes from, and somehow he has a feeling that it's universal literally everywhere.]
no subject
Don't mind me, it's, uh- well, it's kind of my job to imagine the worst. I'm sure you have a lot of good people taking the fight where it belongs.
no subject
Worrying about it won't do any good, fortunately or unfortunately. Still, I hope my stay here won't be overlong.
[Since, y'know, he's got shit to do back home.]
What about yourself? Were you in the medical field before being pulled here?
no subject
Still a few days shy of graduation.
no subject
[That's usually what people mean when they say "just a few days before graduation," right?]
no subject
And anyway, it isn't even his only problem. ]
Fantastic timing, all around.
no subject
Completion of a long course of training and study is still something to be celebrated. For what it's worth, you have my congratulations.
no subject
Believe it or not, it means a lot.
