"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

jean grey (x-men: apocalypse)
[ Once she finds her way to the barracks she's been assigned, she spends a majority of the time just trying to get used to the new setting. It's very different from the mansion, obviously. There's also... a fish and hamster. Apparently she has a roommate. She finds the food and makes sure to feed one and then the other. She waits for any sign of her roommate but when it's nearing the end of... the day?? and Jean is ready to sleep and still no one.
She sleeps for maybe an hour or two. Weary from the day's events. But it doesn't last long. Whether it be some noise on the ship or just the uneasiness of being in a strange place getting to her, she lays awake in bed. Staring up at the dark ceiling. She had felt a buzz of minds when she made her way to the barracks. Had spent most of her time blocking out those minds out of respect -- and because letting too many in at once could be very bad for her and her mind.
Now, with more people asleep, she closes her eyes and slowly lowers her mental walls, reaching out to get a better feel of the people on board. Making sure the captains hadn't been lying to her when she first arrived had been more of a priority when she first arrived. Now, she wants to see what kind of people she'll be around for the foreseeable future. ]
( hallways )
[ Jean liked to think she was adaptable. Strong. That after everything she had been through up to this point, she could face anything. So far, she felt she was doing pretty well, all things considered.
But she was new to this ship. New to all of this. Trying to navigate through darkened hallways in a place she was unfamiliar with combined with blocking out people's mounting resentment, paranoia, and fear was a bit much. She has to stop walking at one point, leaning up against the wall and closing her eyes. She takes in a deep breath and lets it out. She repeats the process, trying to steady herself.
She needed to do this. Not enough resistance and she'll let too many minds in. Too much emotion let loose on her end and she could possibly damage the ship or hurt the crew. She really wished the Professor could be here with her. As it was, she felt a little like she was drifting in the ocean and being pulled further and further away from land. ]
( mess hall )
[ Her appetite comes and goes, still feeling a bit too tense to eat much. But considering the new rationing of food (at least she was told it was new), she makes it a point to not waste what she's given.
Still. She doesn't feel all that comfortable in the mess hall. She picks a table away from most of the crew, eats in silence, lost in her own thoughts. They usually turn back towards home, whether they saw her disappear in that flash of blue light. What they were doing right now. How much she misses being there with them already. ]
( gardens )
[ Jean hadn't really known what to think of being assigned the role of "Gardener". She wasn't exactly into it. Or had that much of a "green thumb". But growing crops on a ship seemed like an important job and she wasn't going to mess that up. Or try her best not to.
Once she found the place, she spends a few minutes just looking around, getting her bearings on where everything is, what everything is. After that, she pulls her hair back, gets on some gloves, grabs a bucket and proceeds to pull weeds where she finds them. Some come up easier than others and when they do, she tosses them into the bucket floating beside her. ]
( closed to peter )
[ cont. from here ]
[ Since she can feel him grow a little calmer, she gives him a softer, more genuine sort of smile, letting him go. It still hurts some but it's unrealistic for her to expect any different when he doesn't know her. She knows this.
She nods and looks down at the device on her wrist, ]
It says my barracks are on the Mero deck, #022. And that I'm to be working in the gardens and taking care of the plant-life on the ship.
no subject
[He starts walking, waving her to follow over his shoulder. At least he's going slow enough that he thinks his limp isn't so obvious and that she'll actually be able to follow. Friends in the future or not, he's not sure how she'd feel about a quick ride place to place.]
I'll show you to the gardens first, might as well start with something nice. I wonder if you'll be stuck with the kittens too? I mean, they're kind of half plant and they grow there. Everyone kind of takes care of them anyway, but you should totally ask about that.
no subject
I could always mentally knock. That way I'll know if you're there are not. If you're okay with that.
[ Jean appreciates him slowing down for her. She's a bit too distracted to notice any limp just yet. Especially when he mentions... plant kittens? She'll blink at the back of his head before taking a few steps to catch up more. ]
Wait. Kittens? Half plant kittens?

Garden
Resents it enormously.
So she's spending as much time as possible. But a girl has to sleep. And occasionally use the lukewarm shower.
She's just returning after a brief hiatus, high heels clacking on the floor. And then she spots a stranger. In her garden.
Okay, not her garden.
Except it's kinda her garden!]
Hey...are you lost?
no subject
She manages to stop it just before it hits. It seems like it sets itself down on the floor before she looks over at her. ]
No? I work here.

And then all of a sudden, there's red.
Wanda's stepped out of her room in the hopes that maybe a short walk will help calm her nerves. All the shielding in the world won't do anything about her own fears and worries. She's distracted, but if Jean decides to poke at Wanda's mind, she'll find it aware and cautious.]
no subject
Her mind will brush against Wanda's, wanting to know if the person was in trouble or just... troubled. Like a lot of other crew members seemed to be.
However, when she does so, her eyes will shoot open and she pulls back. She can feel how that mind knows what she's doing, knows she's there. Which, honestly, shocks her. ]

E-Excuse me? Are you alright?

Responding to the question almost seems like a belated sort of thing, nodding her head a little too earnestly and pushing away from the wall. ]

It's a focused exercise he's always tried too hard at and one that he fails because of too much focus, rather than not enough reasoning and contemplation. It's a struggle of constant reminders that thinking too much on clearing his mind does the exact opposite, and so he lets himself drift, thinking only on maintaining his breathing despite the pain in his ribs. Images pass by in that solitary darkness, his mind flitting from one event to another until they all blur together in a stream he pointedly ignores.
"Let them go," he can hear Yoda saying, and it's the one solid piece of advice he tries to maintain (at least in this). Thoughts are not something that can be lost, but this focus can be.
At first, he's grappling around in that solitude for nothing in particular. Reaching, vaguely, for familiarity: people, routine,
and if he's lucky, whatever it is that's holding his friend's own powers hostage, though a long shot. What he finds instead is nothing of the sort. There's a presence here, one he doesn't recognize, probing just as insistently. It's a familiar mental push, but the light around it is all wrong. Strange. His eyes shoot open in an instant. Is it possible there's another one of them on board, and he'd missed it entirely? That both Ahsoka and Obi-Wan had either both missed it too, or failed to make note? Perhaps, but unlikely.
He shrugs his robe on as he leaves his own room and tries to follow the faint, foreign signature of whoever (or whatever?) this presence is. It leads him down the quiet hallway, past several neighboring rooms, and then simply stops. He contemplates leaving then, dealing with this in the morning when this tomb of a barracks hallway can't be disturbed so easily, but what if he misses it (again)? What if he can't find it?
He knocks.]
no subject
She sits up in her bed and pads over to the door in the dark. Should she? But then she feels the other walking towards her. A man.
She flinches away from the door when he knocks. Swallowing hard, heartbeat thudding in her eyes, she hopes she'll be quick enough to defend any attacks... Not that she can feel that from him. She felt his worry, his anxiety. But there's no maliciousness or anger coming from him.
Eventually, she opens her door a crack, peeking out at the person on the other side. She's not really sure what to say... She ends up going with the lame: ]

mess hall;
He'd grown accustomed. Spoiled, he thinks, and he finishes his meal in record time, barely looking up. He's not exactly eating like a pig, but it's quick and hurried and he swears by the time he finishes the last of his unappealing gruel his stomach is still rumbling.
Sometimes being a speedster absolutely, positively sucks. He wrinkles his nose, mad at himself, and leans back in the mess hall to glance around, finally. It's mostly look at the crew and find familiar faces--he may be hungry but he can still be bored.
Red hair is something that catches his eye, and his wrinkled nose gives way to pursed lips and furrowed brows. New, he thinks, because he doesn't know him and he makes it his business to know--mainly sheer nosiness. ]
You know-- [ Pietro's accent is thick, his tone light ] --it's important to eat and clear your plate.

--Mettaton turns to look at the young girl, his eyebrow raising. It's a concerned expression, as this human appears as if she may faint. Finishing up his conversation (one he was only holding to be polite anyway), he moves closer to Jean.]

BB-9 had been keeping watch, and she beeps softly once she notices someone approaching. This is more than enough to wake Rey, who sits bolt-upright at the disturbance. Right now, she's coming back from the Cargo Bay after picking up the mail delivery she gad gotten last month. She's carrying a huge cardboard box full of the glassware she requested for her little bar project. So no, it's not the lack of proper light that's bothering her but the fact that the box is heavy that's causing her troubles. She's breathing heavily and grunting as she enters the Mero Deck, feeling the sweat wet her back. However just as she's about to reach her room, her feet accidentally slips and makes her to lose her balance -- dropping the box from her hands. ]

Not that it shows. He does his best to keep going with his routine, which at the moment involves working around the power issues as much as it does helping new arrivals.
He's not sure if the girl is new or not, but he's inclined to say yes, simply because he's never seen her before. She doesn't seem to be doing too well either, and he approaches cautiously, lifting a hand up and speaking up so he doesn't spook her. Closer and closer he gets, and one thing she'll find is that his mind is blissfully silent. Or eerily silent, depends on how she wants to look at it. ]

But with new arrivals, and there being the slightest of chances that she might have missed someone from home, she knew focusing her mind would help bring them to her attention.
However, the mind she feels isn't one familiar in the slightest. It came to her, and besides that, it felt...different? She couldn't quite explain it. But what she did know was they were close.
She doesn't exactly want to start knocking on doors along Mero deck, but she does exit her room and move through the halls, trying to pinpoint where the mind was. Even if she didn't know them, they were another Jedi-- or Force user of some kind. That was excuse enough to find them.]

[ Trish is pretty good at recognising the signs of someone feeling seriously overwhelmed, which is why she approaches Jean when she sees her.
Maybe she isn't really helping by intruding on this calming moment, but that's Trish for you, she's really bad at just leaving people alone if she thinks they need help. ]
