"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

"Anyway! It's nice to meet you."

She can't tell for certain which of the other beds are claimed, but she won't need to make that decision immediately. She leans comfortably against the wall and examines the bookshelves as a potential cache for her few important things. A very convenient source of data, too.
Nothing on the shelf looks immediately necessary to her new tasks. It might not be meant as homework. "I hear they assign everyone functions here? I'm supposed to be a Navigation Operations Technician."
no subject
"That sounds important," he tells Yori cheerfully. "I didn't get anything like that, but I suppose that someone like me can't be trusted with a real job. I just watch after the bonsai tree in the garden, which... grows cats, apparently."
no subject
She shakes her head and assures him, "I'm sure you are more qualified for that job than I would be. It sounds important too."
At least she has some idea where to start with Navigation. Gather data, don't crash the ship. A cat tree? No.
But Yori doesn't quite like the sound of that implication. "Someone like you?" she echoes with concern. Is that relative to his home or this ship or both?
no subject
He still looks gently amused as he continues: "Well, you see, I'm not really good for much. I have no skills, and I don't mean anything in the grand scheme of things. So I just try to do what I can to help others reach greater heights. So, while you're so qualified and working so hard to navigate this incredible machine through the vast and treacherous expanse of space, it stands to reason that I'm just playing with cats."
no subject
A computer program written in 1982 probably has no more business navigating an entire User system than a young, untrained User does, but Yori's grateful the admins of the ship are giving her a chance to learn. She doesn't really want to give her new roommate quite that much detail yet.
"I suppose everyone sees a different grand scheme of things," she chooses to counter instead. "You would mean something in mine." From the system, any User input was examined for what it meant or hinted at. Everyone here is a User at least to their own MID, and that's too recursive a thought to dwell on if she actually wants to let the programs in her own do their jobs.
i'm sorry, things escalate very quickly when komaeda is involved LMAO
Basically, anyone else who took that training would do great at whatever job they tried, provided they applied themselves enough. Komaeda wouldn't, because he's Komaeda.
He stops to consider her second statement. "...Well... I'd like to believe that I can be good for something, sometime in my life. Even if I can't do anything spectacular... I can still support the people who are the torch-bearers of hope and accomplishment. If I can lift people like them a little bit higher, to a level they couldn't get to as easily on their own... if I could do that, I think I would die happy."
no subject
Maybe he's not a User? Maybe she just needs a wider sample. She hopes this is a mindset he can grow out of. Most single-focus programs she's known haven't had much chance. Who defines his terms?
"If supporting others is your function I can't argue," she says, tone a little startled. "Even so, it's worth trying new things. Some of them might make you happy too."
no subject
"Oh, I do... I have hobbies. Don't worry about that." Komaeda waves a hand and smiles at her once again. "Actually, don't worry about me at all! It's not worth your time, I promise." Spending too much time with Komaeda can be a hope-killer.
no subject
He'd be surprised how much of a program's time he is worth, but Yori's not in his system nor is she his program. She's happy to keep it that way. "Off-duty, it's my time to spend if I feel like it," she says nevertheless. There aren't many places where that's been true for programs, in her experience, and she appreciates the ship for that part of her contract. "I hope you'll show me your cat tree sometime."
no subject
Komaeda latches onto the topic of the cat tree, mostly to get the subject off of himself. "You can come and see it whenever you want!" he exclaims. "The garden is open at all hours. I spend a fair amount of time in there, too. Even if you don't see me, you can still play with the cats." They're very cute cats, you know.
no subject
Her opinion of her new roommate is at about the same level. "Some kind of introduction would be nice. I don't want to hurt them by accident."
no subject
no subject
"Some people keep cats, I'm sure." Users must--as opposed to the programs written inside computer systems. She lifts a shoulder in discomfort. "It's...a long story." She's only a program, re-writable by anyone with a little time and expertise who chose to try, and she's not sure yet if she wants the people sleeping in her quarters to know that. But she doesn't want to lie to them, either.
In the system, bits might behave a little like cats, from what she's heard. Companions to programs. Not many bits stayed around after the Master Control Program took charge. They couldn't defend themselves that well. "What defenses do cats typically have?"
no subject
"Well, even domesticated cats came from wild cats, who needed defenses to survive. They can see much better than humans, even in the dark. They have retractable claws and a powerful bite. And they all have the hunting instincts of their ancestors and wild bretheren... there's more besides that, but you get the idea."
no subject
She's never met a cat, but there were reports of some very dangerous wolf-shaped things that had given her a wary respect for how strange the User world's animals could be.
no subject
"If you want to go see them... we could go together. I'll show you how to handle them so they'll like you."
no subject
"Any time," Yori agrees at once. This has nothing to do with her own assigned tasks, but she definitely doesn't want to miss the chance.
The Admin she's supposed to avoid probably wouldn't take any interest in cats, would he? Not enough data to be sure. If they cross paths, Yori can probably just back away. There's no reason to think Clu has noticed her in particular yet.
The sooner the better for a scouting venture like this, then. She checks the ship clock. "I'm not on duty for several hours, if you have time to go today."
