old but unfamiliar faces
"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

At first, this month seems no more unusual than the previous one for those who have been aboard the Moira for any amount of time. The crew who had landed on the slaver outpost were rescued, and with everyone aboard, the ship has pushed forward into the darker parts of the Runoff. Anyone arriving through the Ingress follows the same routine—moving from the Ingress room into the Medbay for their physical and contract before being assisted by seasoned crew members and helped to their assigned decks. But all familiar things must eventually come to an end: two final travelers come through the Ingress. The first, and most noticeable difference between them and all the others, is their clothing. Both are dressed in standard Moira uniforms, though they bear the insignia of one sharing the same rank as Captains Cúrre and Thán. After a moment to take in all the people on the platform ahead of them, one of the two latest arrivals approaches one of the Ingress panels and begins to manipulate the controls. The Ingress completely shuts down. Unlike before, however, there isn’t an imbalance felt across the ship; everything remains normal and stable.

Utilizing the computer systems located in the Ingress room, they send out the following message to the crew via the MID:

To all those aboard this vessel: I am Ira Phirun, assigned captain of the Moira. First Mate Egan and I will be commandeering all rights to the ship as soon as word is sent to those currently in charge. Expect a more detailed report as soon as all records and logs in Navigation have been reviewed by myself and the First Mate. All questions will be answered in a timely matter. For now, there will be no interruption of daily routine or reprimand if conduct among ranks is broken. Thanks for your time.

Heading to Navigation, the Captain and First Mate, for seemingly unknown reasons, approach Navigator Manasseh and have her show them all records and logs of the Moira. Those working in Navigation when the Captain and First Mate arrive will see Mana greet them in a professional manner. Oddly, the Captain and First Mate act very familiar with the Navigator. They review all documents, but when they come upon news that the Ploiatos is on board, their mostly friendly demeanor shifts quickly. The Captain issues a sharp order, unintelligible to those who are close enough to overhear parts of their conversation, and without any warning at all, Mana loses consciousness and collapses right there on the bridge. Within minutes of this happening, the ship as a whole falls into a low power state with basic functions only. Mana’s MID alerts Medbay, and without hesitation, Captain Cúrre places her in cryo with strict orders to those who work there not to disturb the unit.

As promised, the Captain and First Mate soon address the crew.

lights down low
The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill.

reuse & recycle
The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet.

new jobs, same faces
The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment?

[ Jim offers the cue ball back to him, more interested in their present conversation. ]

Right. If you're at peace now, what's the purpose of your guild?

Guessing you didn't think you'd end up this far from where you started.

[He says it drily, without so much as a smile. It's more of a wry observation than anything else.]

Maybe. You really have to wonder where things come from. I mean, I wasn't complaining, but it was a bit out of nowhere.

[Worry not, Liquid's figured the place out pretty well.]

Sure. It's not like it's going to be a huge labyrinth or anything. You'll be fine.

Pleasure planet, or at least that's how they market themselves. People from my universe go there for vacations, and sometimes ships will come into orbit to allow shore leave. It's not half bad.

And I will definitely consider that as one. [ He's got to talk to Bones about getting something to counteract anything he accidentally comes across here. ]

Hopefully nothing will come of it, right? [ Ever trying to be the optimist, Jim. Just stay away from the pretty alien plants in the garden. ]

never apologize you're just fine! it happens :)

[personal profile] caelus 2016-08-26 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't say they are mine, exactly. I end up ripping my shirt more often that I'd like. [ Jim tries never to judge anyone just from looks alone. It's not how he was brought up, not how things work in his time.

But he can appreciate the ability to be underestimated. People have done that more than once to him even before he joined Starfleet. Even a couple of times after. It didn't always end well for the other people, but he isn't the type to swing first. Even if he does instigate sometimes. ]

That sounds frustrating. [ To say the least. ] My ship and crew, we're on a mission of peaceful exploration in deep space. Uncharted territory, for us. We're trying to build a good framework of stable, peaceful relations.

Which---means I end up going through a lot of those shirts I was talking about.

[ He chuckles as he says it, and casts a frustrated look toward the light. Okay, well maybe if he tries another connection. ] Give me a program or something to hack any day. Just don't ask me to fi---

[ Jim's pretty sure that was a bulb breaking. Yeah. ]

That was not what I planned on doing.
thumbsdown: (i made myself a promise)

[personal profile] thumbsdown 2016-08-26 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
...Yeah, I guess not.

[He doesn't usually have a problem with getting himself lost. It's just dark, and he's more disoriented than usual. He knows better than to trust himself completely right now.]

If you can point out the comics I can probably find something on my own. Can come find you once I'm done.

[As long as he knows vaguely where to go, he should be good.]

[ Frustrations abound everywhere. Jim isn't exactly happy to be here, but he's dealing with it. He may have gotten the captain's chair by luck to start, but he started on the command route by choice. He's got a knack for it, and Pike saw that right off when he approached him in that dive bar in Iowa.

And while Jim is distrusting of the situation, and how it is currently being handled---he can't honestly say that he wouldn't do something similar in their places. He might change some things, as the power cut offs and such seem extreme, but he also doesn't know the danger that this creature under guard could cause. He's running off scarce information and speculation alone, and that can be dangerous, which is why he is talking to people.

He appreciates Snake's ability to turn a lot of goings on and information into a more concise briefing that he can follow without much effort. ]

If it is widespread, then turning off the Ingress here is just a half-measure. It keeps them from being brought here, but people can still be pulled in from their universes and stranded. [ And with the Moira ditching planetary stops unless absolutely necessary---what happens to those people? Especially if they are on worlds with inhospitable climates?

That's possibly something to think on and posit to those in authority later, but not here. Not unless Snake cares to broach that subject with him. The idea of leaving people possibly stranded on unknown worlds makes his gut twist in knots. Is it a way to keep this creature from escaping until it can face trial? Or something else? ]

But they're convinced that if we reach this Hub. This other world, then they can fix the Ingress and send everyone home.

[ It's less a question and more a comment. Talking out loud. ]

It'd make sense, though. Raiden doesn't really...talk about himself much. Or his life before TRIDENT. [ well gee, there's a surprise. raiden's opening up to his protege little by little, mostly by milly's stubborn determination, but she's learned far more about raiden from the future than she has from himself about his past. ] Maybe you could fill me in a little. I mean, obviously some of the same stuff happened in both our worlds.

[ she smiles a little ruefully. ]

If there is another me, we probably wouldn't have any reason to have met, anyway. I wonder if there's any chance I'm a normal girl in your world.

See, that's where it gets complicated...

[Because at the point Tommy is from, Loki is very bad news... and he's not entirely sure how he'll react yet.]

Probably a lot of them, yeah. A lot happens after what you remember... and then for a while, I was taken away from our world and put in a really terrible place. My magic has gotten a lot stronger, for one.

I don't mind at all. [ Jim shifts in a bit closer, grabbing a little more than half, and settles it before nodding towards where she had been headed before he stopped her. ] This the way?

[ He follows after once she starts, and keeps an easy pace with her. ]

Fine by me. I'm just trying to get a feel for things. See how everyone is handling the changes. It seems to me like it's a rather abrupt happening. While I can appreciate looking to the long term, the short term might prove to be difficult with such strict policies in place.

In my opinion, anyways. [ It isn't like he has any experience running a starship at all. ]

--Oh fuck!

[As the canon starts charging, Newt realises that this is probably a situation that he should run from, coma or not. Because that looked like it was going to hurt, and he's pretty sure if you die in the dream you die in real life. Or was that just in Inception?]

The toys!! I meant the toys! [he screeches as he scrambles to his feet, staring down the barrel and feeling as if he was going to have a heart attack. He has no idea where to run, but he's certainly not sticking around and so starts pelting off as fast as he can away from the tank.]

Holy fuck, cool your jets!

[Liquid's known people who could probably get lost in a bathroom before, so while he likes to think Boone won't get lost, he supposes it's possible.]

Sure. I won't leave until you're confirmed alive, alright?

[He's never sure if he should even be in the library this late, but he doesn't particularly care either. He leads Boone in, looks around, then heads to where he's pretty sure he saw some comics.]

Should be right over here. Not sure how they are on selection, but it should be alright.

Right. [ Said like he's just learned a new thing, even though he hasn't— he's just been reminded. From that point onwards, it doesn't take much for Bruce to make the leap.

Risa. So— Star Trek. Enterprise. Jim. Jim.

It's only by a little that Bruce manages not to utter some form of 'holy shit' just then, in fact he puts an incredible amount of effort in not even showing on his expression that he knows who this man is. Kind of hard to succeed, considering he's having a major inward fanboy moment, but. He manages somehow. ]

Hopefully not, [ He pauses just to make sure he keeps his voice even, though he can't help fidgeting a little, the corner of his lips twitching. ] But I wouldn't let my guard down. Not saying you will, but... yeah. All things considered, it could be worse.

[Boone just kind of half-smiles at that.]

Good to know.

[There's something reassuring about knowing someone has his back while he's drunk. Even if it is only to make sure he doesn't pass out in a corner in the library.]

Thanks. I'll try not to get myself into too much trouble.

[It's mostly a joke, since he's pretty sure there's only so much that can go wrong here. Still, he does have a habit of attracting trouble.]

[ Pietro is very good at acting out. He is and always has been passionate, especially when it comes to his sister. Even if he has a quiet exterior at times, he's always been emotional. Predictable, to an extend as well, and this is no exception.

He's mad. He's upset. He's furious, but not at Vision. he's taking most of it out on the synthetic, of course, because he doesn't know how else to deal with it: he took his parents death out on Tony Stark, not the people who bought the weapons from him. This is the same mentality.

Pietro isn't acting like Vision is the villian because he told him he died. Pietro's acting like this because his death means Wanda was alone. ]

I don't care how sorry you are. [ It's wolfish, almost a growl, and blue eyes fix themselves onto Visions, daring him to look away. ]

How long? How long as she been dealing with this, from where you're from?

[Venom reaches under the bed and pulls out a very long, white case adorned with the same blue eye that's dyed into his hair. He flicks open the first lock, somehow unlocking the other latches that line the edge. He opens it, revealing...

a pool cue. It looks like a regular blue/white cue, only it has a black skull etched into the butt.]

I've had it for many years. I don't want to risk losing it.

[He looks at the returned ball, as if he's staring into a crystal ball. Soon it dissolves into thin air. The spectacle is followed with a quiet sigh.]

That's one of many questions I've been pondering since I became the leader. We've existed for many reasons, mostly to punish those who are considered untouchable. Those who could be removed from society without detriment.

I will be the first to admit that we're criminals, but recently, we saw a chance to atone for our sins. I found an opportunity for us to operate in the light, becoming a legitimate organization.

Unfortunately, I'm not entirely sure if I succeeded, because I found myself here after my final mission.

[ If she has documentation of what her new function is, she'll be much less worried about failing to meet expectations. Would it seem strange to be too pleased about that? ]

Thank you very much!

[ No one can fault her politeness. ]

[ At the request for clarification, Yori hesitates a little too long. This seems like a bad time to admit to being rewriteable. Still less does she want to connect herself to Rinzler where Clu might hear about it. Well. ]

Have you met Tron? He calls himself a program, even though he's not inside a system at the moment.

[ So does Yori, but she can't fight off attackers nearly so well. She hopes Tron won't mind the half-truth. She glances away from Cortana's curious look.]

I wondered if your system here in the ship might be anything like his.

[ Far more advanced than Encom, but how does it look to those who live there? Are the programs happy to be at work, or are they enslaved? And since Yori has a chance to slide the query in, how do the established crew-members feel about programs? ]
