old but unfamiliar faces
"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

At first, this month seems no more unusual than the previous one for those who have been aboard the Moira for any amount of time. The crew who had landed on the slaver outpost were rescued, and with everyone aboard, the ship has pushed forward into the darker parts of the Runoff. Anyone arriving through the Ingress follows the same routine—moving from the Ingress room into the Medbay for their physical and contract before being assisted by seasoned crew members and helped to their assigned decks. But all familiar things must eventually come to an end: two final travelers come through the Ingress. The first, and most noticeable difference between them and all the others, is their clothing. Both are dressed in standard Moira uniforms, though they bear the insignia of one sharing the same rank as Captains Cúrre and Thán. After a moment to take in all the people on the platform ahead of them, one of the two latest arrivals approaches one of the Ingress panels and begins to manipulate the controls. The Ingress completely shuts down. Unlike before, however, there isn’t an imbalance felt across the ship; everything remains normal and stable.

Utilizing the computer systems located in the Ingress room, they send out the following message to the crew via the MID:

To all those aboard this vessel: I am Ira Phirun, assigned captain of the Moira. First Mate Egan and I will be commandeering all rights to the ship as soon as word is sent to those currently in charge. Expect a more detailed report as soon as all records and logs in Navigation have been reviewed by myself and the First Mate. All questions will be answered in a timely matter. For now, there will be no interruption of daily routine or reprimand if conduct among ranks is broken. Thanks for your time.

Heading to Navigation, the Captain and First Mate, for seemingly unknown reasons, approach Navigator Manasseh and have her show them all records and logs of the Moira. Those working in Navigation when the Captain and First Mate arrive will see Mana greet them in a professional manner. Oddly, the Captain and First Mate act very familiar with the Navigator. They review all documents, but when they come upon news that the Ploiatos is on board, their mostly friendly demeanor shifts quickly. The Captain issues a sharp order, unintelligible to those who are close enough to overhear parts of their conversation, and without any warning at all, Mana loses consciousness and collapses right there on the bridge. Within minutes of this happening, the ship as a whole falls into a low power state with basic functions only. Mana’s MID alerts Medbay, and without hesitation, Captain Cúrre places her in cryo with strict orders to those who work there not to disturb the unit.

As promised, the Captain and First Mate soon address the crew.

lights down low
The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill.

reuse & recycle
The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet.

new jobs, same faces
The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment?

[ Well, it's true. What happened to his best friend was rare and barely ever heard of. ]

Everything? Your technology as well? [ He's still turning the pool cue over a moment, smiling as he does. ] Earth? If you're familiar, where I'm from is part of the United Federation of Planets.

What's that symbol mean?

[ Hey, it isn't half as bad as the one time he had a reaction during a banquet and nearly caused an interstellar incident because the diplomatic leaders of that world were convinced there had been an assassination attempt, right? ]

Come on, you know it's you, but do you really---gah. [ His face screws up at the mention of what his hand is going to look like soon if he doesn't let his best friend see to it. ] Ok, I didn't need that reminder. I needed it never.

Anyways, if I had my hypo on me, I wouldn't have had to worry about it, but you know I only take that with me on away missions. I need another one.

Yeah, I've only managed to talk to a few people so far. I'd rather not call it a guise unless I have to. A lot of these people may not even be from a time that has anything to do with space travel if I'm understanding this Ingress correctly.

[ He shakes his head a little and sighs. ] As for the general temperament, it's pretty dismal at the moment. My own included. [ While he would be hard pressed to admit that to anyone else, Spock and Bones are different. ]

You know I'm still getting used to this whole Jim Kirk diplomat thing, right? I usually end up with my shirt ripped more often that not.

[ And he will do it. He knows he can do it. It's just weird. While they trained for this at the Academy, he guess he never figured it for a thing he'd actually be good at in practice. He prefers to go for honesty as opposed to veiled discussions. Here, though, honesty didn't seem to be something so forthcoming from all parties involved.

Which didn't bode well for peaceful talks in the long run. Another thing to keep an eye on. ]

[ Miller's faith is absolutely for Venom, but that's something that's between the two of them. Snake isn't interested in getting in the middle of it. No, he'd rather stay on the outskirts, like usual.

Snake nods, and he's halfway to making a move to leave when Ahab follows up with a question. It seems like no matter what they do, that need to know about the future will always be there.

He huffs out a breath. ]
He was my drill instructor when I was a rookie. I didn't know a thing about any of this back then.

[ Miller had taught him everything he knew, supported him on more than one mission, and been the one person that Snake had been able to reach out to while holed up in Alaska. He's definitely one of the most important people in Snake's life. ]

What sort is that? Back home they hate all magic but hate blood magic especially. Though we don't really use the word "sorceress". If we want to insult a woman using magic that's a "witch".

[ He's smart enough to know when someone is trying to detour the conversation. He doesn't argue or fight against it. But the strawberries get his attention. ]

Glad to hear it.

[ He cants his head but doesn't take one yet. ] Did you grow these aboard ship?

While that somewhat made sense, Sam wasn't sure why anyone might be wandering around Med Bay. There were way too many people that would notice someone new and want to examine them in spite of smiles.

Sam frowned a bit.

"…you've actually signed the contract, right?"

( with dutch mostly in blue leather, they do actually kind of match, which is not something dutch wants to consider too closely. his outfit is obviously made from a different material, but neither one of them is wearing the uniform provided, which dutch takes as a good sign. close enough. )

That just begs the question who wears it better.

I've started a hydroponics pilot. Don't worry, they're not an alien equivalent, they're the real thing. I brought the seeds over with me when I was...picked up.

[ Snake can only be so weird about it when his best friend came back from the dead as a cyborg ninja. Fox's appearance had been much more striking compared to Milly, and his mental state had also been affected by what those scientists had put him through.

It goes to figure that a parent would be more careful in how they handled something like this.

Snake definitely doesn't have any clinical interest in it. His curiosity is just that. Even if he'd interacted with Frank after his body had been changed, it's not like there had ever been time to ask questions or get a proper look at him. It takes Snake a few seconds to find the seams, though when he sees them all he does is let out a small 'hmm.'

Snake could understand the need for secrecy, though it obviously wouldn't matter on a spaceship. As soon as Milly says the name "Raiden," though, his head snaps up so he can stare her in the face. ]
You know Raiden? How?

[He grunts affirmatively in response, turning his back to McCree like he doesn't want the guy to see him come back to some kind of coherence. 76 would just as well go nameless, but he doesn't particularly care what the media sticks him with. It's convenient. Functional. People can call him what they want.

Now that he's calmed down slightly, however, he seems more exhausted than anything.

I'll stay out of your way.

[Because he's not interested in McCree's bounty, of course, even if it wasn't meaningless here. That's going to be the best course of action for both of them.]

Suggest you do the same.

[ That was part of the reason, yes, but the other part was to impart the fact that while this might be a dismal situation---there was still hope for change. There was always that much.

Jim understands caution. He can appreciate it. He plays chess often, with Spock, but he has never been keen at playing it where people's lives are at stake. This smacks of that. This place, and the people caught up in it. ]

They do. So we'll be patient. Listen and wait, like you said. I think between the two of us, and hopefully some others, we can figure this out.

[ Jim offers a soft, rueful sounding chuckle. He shifts a little away, so as not to crowd him too much, and settles with a sigh. His arms rest on his knees, which are close to his chest. ]

Vacation. I'm not sure I remember what those are. I'd say we could try and find drinks with little umbrellas, but those were never really my thing. [ A beat. ] Rough back home?

I wouldn't be too happy about it myself. [ Technically, he isn't good with it at all, but there's not much use in making a fuss about it just yet. This isn't his ship, isn't his crew, but he'll be damned if he just watches one sink under the proverbial waves on his watch. ]

I can help you get those to wherever you're going if you want? No sense in me sitting on my hands.

Sure thing, partner.

[ EXCEPT NOT. NOT AT ALL. He needs to sort this out. Follow this thread. But for now, it's best if they depart peaceable-like. McCree tips his hat, not caring too much that 76 probably can't see it. Feel it, Jack. Sense it. ]

Try not to choke the life outta anybody else if'n you can help it.

[ Instead of watching the kid, Snake's eyes are fixed on the barbell as more and more weights are added to it. It's way beyond what someone of that build should be able to lift, which confirms the whole super-strength thing without him ever having to ask.

People are changed for any number of reasons. Because of life in general, because they're put through something impossible but survive anyway, or even because of someone who they meet. When the kid lifts six hundred pounds with only one arm, though, it's pretty obvious that he's been changed in ways beyond what Snake could imagine.

It's hard not to think of Frank in that moment. An incredible soldier, tortured and rearranged until he was nothing but a killing machine. Snake remembers the bloody, dismembered bodies scattered all over that hallway at Shadow Moses. He remembers Frank's bloodcurdling screams.

Snake crosses his arms over his chest as he watches the kid lift, tilting his head as he poses a question. ]
So if our ship's boarded again and we're attacked, or someone here's controlled and comes at you without meaning to, what do you plan to do?

[ Bringing his focus back to Kirk, Adrien watched the man's face for a moment, before he gave a small nod. ]

Ask discreetly enough, you'll find what you're looking for. [ He said in a low tone, probably nothing Kirk didn't already know but at least confirmation that the man could find plenty of like minded individuals.

The comment about drinks with umbrellas got a small snort, no smile and it wasn't a proper laugh but a sound of amusement all the same. Amusement that never reached his eyes on the heels of Kirk's question.

As a rule, Adrien didn't talk about back home. There were the few people on board the ship who had lived it and he had looped Tony in on the situation but beyond that, Adrien kept that information to himself. It hadn't been that big a deal, until these recent events.

While he sat there, in a pensive sort of stillness, Kirk might notice that Courser had sat up, ears lifted as if sensing something. The tracker didn't move away, though he shifted to set his chin on his companion's thigh and Adrien's hand (the one not under his chin) dropped into the bahari's blue mane, carding through it in a self soothing manner.

Adrien weighed his next move carefully, chose his words carefully to give the information he felt was pertinent, without exposing the horror beneath. ]

Circumstances, like this [ he explained. ] where the ship ultimately flies under the banner of an unknown entity, controlling at a distance with motives that are veiled. But giving the impression that the crew is not the highest priority on the ship.

Difficult to put trust in the officers given governance by that entity, where are their priorities? Ultimately, lives on the line and the expectation that we'll get ourselves out of trouble; because help isn't guaranteed.

[ He paused, stroking his hand over Courser's ear as the bahari shifted closer. Again, picking carefully through details. ]

My employer back home, on another ship -not the one I served on- discovered a handful of crew members acting against their interests. Save for the few who had turned in their crew mates, HQ held the crew in cuffs in the ship's brig and obliterated the entire ship.

There were thousands of beings who had no idea what had happened but they died, because those were the stakes; their lives and the safety of their planets were forfeit due to a 'retired contract'.

[ And that wasn't the worst of it, but it was enough to help explain his own position. ]

The crew I served with, we had some very hot headed, heroic types and they suffered under what we were doing; I don't blame them, every last one of us deserve to suffer. But when you're plotting, long term, against a cosmic force that powerful, a little patience and a hell of a lot discretion is called survival.

[ He sighed then and rubbed his hand over his face a couple of times, before shifting Courser off his leg and sitting forward, hands linked together. ]

I'm not saying that what's happened here isn't disquieting, especially given the questions on this ship itself that are going unanswered. But the new Captain and First Mate didn't kill the officers on this ship. Back home? That would have been their first move. We've got some breathing room to be patient in this, collect what we can yes but also see where this new Captain directs us.

[ And one last brush up through his hair, he pointed at the dead console and gave Kirk a wry look. ]

Maybe pull back a little on the risk of electrocuting yourself, at least?

Naberrie is their last name.

[Although she isn't certain how much weight that holds in this place. She has no future to return to outside of this ship (and she still cannot explain how this has happened) but others might, and can they take that knowledge? Even if there is just a whisper of a word left in her mind, Padmé is willing.]

It is a beautiful planet. Or perhaps was.

[She isn't certain what toll her people will have to pay now that Palpatine is Emperor. It has always had abundant resources and the people there do not suffer. It would be a pristine planet to take and take and take from.]

I'm not surprised. They were branded as traitors, but that was simply a rouse. They were protectors of the peace and of the Republic for many centuries, but they were reclusive and withdrawn, as some would say. They had their own code to follow.

[Yet that expression softens.]

I know of Master Yoda. He was old when I first met him. In a way, he seems almost timeless... But, only Luke?

[She cannot even begin to speak of the Jedi, although would Leia not have the same potential of Luke? Or is it something that works as it will upon who it will? Then again, who would have trained Leia, especially after the demise of so many great beings?]

The galaxy became a darker place when their light went out.

Newt also falls into the "doesn't play well with others" and "bad at teamwork" categories unless the situation demanded it (interns refused to work with him, Hermann frequently writes passive aggressive reports to the Marshall about his "ludicrous laboratory behaviour that borders on the imbecilic" which Newton only finds hysterical and makes him play up on purpose.
