old but unfamiliar faces
"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

At first, this month seems no more unusual than the previous one for those who have been aboard the Moira for any amount of time. The crew who had landed on the slaver outpost were rescued, and with everyone aboard, the ship has pushed forward into the darker parts of the Runoff. Anyone arriving through the Ingress follows the same routine—moving from the Ingress room into the Medbay for their physical and contract before being assisted by seasoned crew members and helped to their assigned decks. But all familiar things must eventually come to an end: two final travelers come through the Ingress. The first, and most noticeable difference between them and all the others, is their clothing. Both are dressed in standard Moira uniforms, though they bear the insignia of one sharing the same rank as Captains Cúrre and Thán. After a moment to take in all the people on the platform ahead of them, one of the two latest arrivals approaches one of the Ingress panels and begins to manipulate the controls. The Ingress completely shuts down. Unlike before, however, there isn’t an imbalance felt across the ship; everything remains normal and stable.

Utilizing the computer systems located in the Ingress room, they send out the following message to the crew via the MID:

To all those aboard this vessel: I am Ira Phirun, assigned captain of the Moira. First Mate Egan and I will be commandeering all rights to the ship as soon as word is sent to those currently in charge. Expect a more detailed report as soon as all records and logs in Navigation have been reviewed by myself and the First Mate. All questions will be answered in a timely matter. For now, there will be no interruption of daily routine or reprimand if conduct among ranks is broken. Thanks for your time.

Heading to Navigation, the Captain and First Mate, for seemingly unknown reasons, approach Navigator Manasseh and have her show them all records and logs of the Moira. Those working in Navigation when the Captain and First Mate arrive will see Mana greet them in a professional manner. Oddly, the Captain and First Mate act very familiar with the Navigator. They review all documents, but when they come upon news that the Ploiatos is on board, their mostly friendly demeanor shifts quickly. The Captain issues a sharp order, unintelligible to those who are close enough to overhear parts of their conversation, and without any warning at all, Mana loses consciousness and collapses right there on the bridge. Within minutes of this happening, the ship as a whole falls into a low power state with basic functions only. Mana’s MID alerts Medbay, and without hesitation, Captain Cúrre places her in cryo with strict orders to those who work there not to disturb the unit.

As promised, the Captain and First Mate soon address the crew.

lights down low
The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill.

reuse & recycle
The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet.

new jobs, same faces
The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment?

[Wait, maybe if she stands up, she can add to the effect a little.]

"They come at night, chewing on shoelaces. Rolling in sawdust. Getting lost in your closet."

[Which is about as far as she goes while being able to keep a straight face.]

Don't forget to tip your waiter. [ He'd heard that exchange on some media or another, he couldn't remember where quite now but it probably didn't matter.

Leaning his head back against the chair, Adrien exhaled a slow breath. ]

It was once impressed upon me that, and I quote, 'suspicion and hysteria will destroy a vessel as surely as any disease might.' [ He tapped the cover of the book in his lap. ] I keep trying to remind myself of that advice, even as I struggle not to give way to suspicion and a definite sense of urgency.

[ It was always easier said than done. ]

If you look at the symptoms, there is nothing there to diagnose specific negative intent.

[ He reached up with his other hand and rubbed at his eyes, before continuing. ]

Than told me he wasn't a captain, he was learning as he went. [ And that he was afraid they were doing it wrong. ] That means these new arrivals could be legitimately appointed commanders of this vessel.

Of course not. Pretending to care about their charges would get in the way of the extortion racket.

[She picked a very bad time to come here, if she didn't want to be immediately suspicious of the entire crew. That is, if there was any picking at all on her front. Which there wasn't.]

Ah, yes. I can see the sepia footage now.

[It's subtle, but there is a change in McCree's demeanor. The way his eyes change from his lazy friendliness to preparation of something.

Hanzo tightens his grip on his bow. No matter how quick this man might be, Hanzo is fast enough to get to an arrow and defend himself. Only a fool would challenge a dragon.]

Perhaps. Perhaps not.

The odds are slim.

It takes Kobra a moment to register that the voice is real and not just part of his daydreaming, but when he does, he sits up and moves to the door to pop it open.

"Thanks."

One of his legs leans out of the car, foot finding the ground beneath. It's not the desert sand he'd been imagining only moments ago, but that's becoming more and more familiar.

"You like music? I got some other stuff on here, too."

[ McCree catches the fresh tension in Hanzo's muscles; the grip tightening on his weapon. Jesse isn't keen to fight here--it's crowded, first of all, and second of all, he did just sign a contract precluding exactly this sort of thing. But even if he has no real intention of drawing Peacekeeper, he doesn't see why he ought to be friendly--not if this man is who McCree thinks he is. ]

Y'ever heard of Overwatch, partner?

[ Any reaction to that would tell Jesse everything he needed to know. ]

There really haven't been much in the way of the droids he's used to here. There's been little non-human-ish ones and the giant autobot people, but that's about it. She would've been closer to what he's used to, if a little clunkier than the pleasure droids back home.

"It works. It's a ray gun." Because so far he's managed to learn that some people here come from places where they still use bullets.

With a grin, he holds it closer for her to see, careful to point it away from either of them. The red gun has white details and lettering that have clearly been done by hand, the paint chipping just a little in places around scorch marks.

[At first, she pays no mind to the fact that someone has interrupted her work. But then she hears BB-9 beep in alarm, sending her crawling out from under the panel she's in. She's shocked to see someone touching her droid--that's so rude. She's dressed to work, but is ready to throw done if he's hurt BB-9.]

[For a moment, he's silent; his frown remains and he breathes through his nose before he lets out an angry sigh. Hanzo's eyes shut.]

You know Genji.

[That is not hard to conclude. He knows why his brother went to Hanamura. The invitation to join.

And Hanzo's refusal.

If not for the contract, he would expect a fight. He would welcome it. He yearns for it. But it will not happen. A shame.]

Stiles just stares at him, opening and closing his mouth a few times.

"How are we defining functioning here?" Because he's not going keel over and die, but he also isn't sure that he's really functioning all that well beyond the bare minimum of that.

"You're not going to step on me, are you? Because that would probably be gross for both of us. Maybe a little more for me."

2011. Is that a real question?

[ It is. He gets that it is, but he can't believe that it is, because all of this is so much more ridiculous than werewolves and that's impressive. ]

Wait, can I see space from there? Where is it? It's either going to be awesome or I'm going to freak out and die. Let's do this.

Jaina's chin tucks, and her eyebrows draw together. If Jacen were here, she would be the first to know. If he'd beat her here, he would have come to the Ingress to find her. She knows he's fine, but he is not on the ship. That leaves...

"Anakin?"

I've never seen anything quite like this place, even the most modern buildings we have where I come from are nowhere close to this. It's disconcerting to say the least.

[Evie returns the other woman's smile with a polite, grateful one of her own. It's a relief to find someone willing to help, even if the knowledge that her new acquaintance has been aboard the ship for quite some times strikes her as a blow. If people have been here for a long time, there's no telling how long it's going to take them to find a way to send everybody back.

So much for getting back to London quickly.]

But I would really appreciate the help, I'm supposed to find my lodgings in the Mero barracks. Do you know if they're far from here?

[And then she remembers her manners and extends a hand with a sheepish smile.]

I'm sorry, I should have introduced myself. I'm Evie Frye and this-

['Is my brother, Jacob' so often follows an introduction that it's almost a reflex now, and Evie catches herself before she adds it unnecessarily. She falters for a split second before she adds:]

- is quite possibly one of the strangest things that's ever happened to me.

"Fantastic." Because Stiles just can't catch a break in life. It's been nonstop excitement since the night Scott was bitten and Stiles is probably more prepared for whatever bizarre way the shit might hit the fan than any seventeen year old has a right to be.

"Are we talking weird supernatural things or terrifying space accidents or just plain old mass murder? Because those are all different kinds of preparation."

"It takes more than a wall to take me o--" Oh, she is not human. And it's not like the way Scott and Derek aren't human, either. No, this is some serious you-don't-even-look-human-hello. Is he supposed to comment on it? Is that normal here? Has he been staring for too long? Yup, definitely that last one.

"What was I saying?"

Leia stiffens at the name when it's spoken, her first thought of a very different man by the name. The Darth Vader she knew at home, the Anakin Skywalker she's met here, twisted into some sickening spiral of darkness and...well, whatever Anakin is at this point.

She must have heard wrong. She would never--never. Jaina must be mistaken. Or Leia must be a very different person than she is now.

"Anakin?" Question and expression of disgust all in one. It's not one of her more premeditated moments, and later, she's likely to regret it. But the shock of a son named for her birth father, not her adoptive father, is a bitter one. "I meant Ben."

the gardens...again

[personal profile] copycape 2016-08-07 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[Vision had been certain the most incredible views this ship had to offer had already been afforded to him by the Observation Deck, but coming across the gardens he realized he should not have been so quick to decide. Some of the strangest and most beautiful--he supposes that is the proper word for it--flora he has ever seen greets him here and he finds himself quickly drawn in. He moves slowly around the space, utterly transfixed by the vivid colors and increasingly improbably shapes these plants are capable of taking.

They are in space, yet look at what these little beings have managed to do. He will never tire of how life continuously surprises him.

He hears the presence of another person in his vicinity before he sees them. He turns to find a humanoid being he may have mistaken for human had their ears not been immediately visible. Unless some sort of body manipulation has taken place, this is likely not a being from his own world. This is nothing new already, even in the short few hours he has been here, but it is enough to send a strange and thrilling sensation up his spine as he comes up beside them.]

I don't suppose you would be the gardener here? I've been hoping to learn the names of some of this plant life.

[Liquid could say something along the lines of 'you don't seem okay,' but he's not going to do that. Not right now. Prying too much isn't exactly the best of ideas.]

I've been worse.

[Sure, he'd been sold into the business of murdering people for entertainment, which he'd found himself getting surprisingly okay with, but at least it wasn't torture, right?

Right?

He shrugs.]

No. Coruscant is my home. I suspect it's very far from both Earth and Vulcan.

[ They have humans in common, at least, of which Obi-Wan happens to be one of. But he thinks he notices ears that feel distinctly non-human, so perhaps this guy's less human than expected. ]

I can imagine it's like being crippled to you. I'm sorry.

[ But he is glad that the failures and reboots haven't damaged her permanently, and that even if the systems all went down she'd likely still be in there, somewhere. Though a thought comes to mind. ]

I've been thinking of setting up a small generator. Since the last time we've had some power issues I've kept some power reserves around, just in case. I can... if you want, I can hook it up to something smaller. Just one computer, or this table, for instance. You can hang around, if you want to. It's kind of small, but...

[ Better than constantly flickering on and off. ]

Ideally I'd suggest a synthetic body but I think that would take me way too long to build. [ But, you know. Just throwing that idea out there. ]

It's nice to meet you, Jim Kirk. I wish I could say this isn't considered better circumstances for me, but this is one of my more pleasant introductions as of late.

A little? The least they could do is light some candles if they're going to leave the place this gloomy.

[Evie's more annoyed with herself for not paying enough attention to move than she is with the other woman for bumping into her. Still, best to channel that annoyance to the situation at hand; after all, being on the ship and finding it placed under restrictions is hardly an ideal situation to find oneself in.]

I don't suppose crew on space ships have a union who could straighten this whole mess out?

[It's said with a wry smile, as though she thoroughly expects the answer to be a resounding no.]
