The smooth transition at least earns a quirk of her lips from Toriel. The shift of topic is a relief, much less awkward between the two of them. She sips at her own drink thoughtfully as she listens to Alphys speak.
"They certainly sound like good times. Goodness." She chuckles softly, relaxing again. "I knew he liked science, but I never had an inkling he was interested in physics. Do you know what he was working on at all?"
When the Bartender returns, likely with another glass for Alphys, Toriel herself motions for the bartender to at least bring them food, motioning the bar food on the menu. "If you could, thank you." She offers back at the scruffy man behind the bar.
"Uhh, back then?" she says, watching the bartender come and go. What was he working on back then? It's kinda fuzzy and the alcohol sure doesn't help her ability to focus.
"I'm not really sure... he was working on it with his dad, though? The last royal scientist before me." She strokes her chin, swings her legs playfully under her bar stool, and takes a long sip of her drink again. "Probably... quantum mechanics? Alternate universes?? I never understood myself."
Grinning, she turns to Toriel. "Me, I like building things. Like robots! And puzzles!"
Toriel finds it odd she can't quite place who the royal scientist was before, the boss monster brushes it aside for now. She must be more buzzed than she originally thought. "Better not to delve into it, it certainly sounds complicated." She answers with a soft laugh.
"Tell me about that, dear. I'd love to hear about what you built." As long as they skirted around what happened to those monsters in her lab Toriel would be content to listen. Toriel only glanced back in the bartenders direction as he settled a tray down on the bar between the two women. At most it had bar finger food. Shockingly nice finger food given the classiness of the bar they were in.
"Oh, well, where shall I begin," Alphys says with a jokey tone to her voice. She reaches over and snatches a handful of mozzarella sticks. "I guess I ought to start with Mettaton? He's what got me the royal scientist position!"
Selecting a stick of gooey cheese with her other hand, she points it at Toriel to emphasize her point.
"Robot with a soul. Pretty big deal. I, uh, couldn't find a way to apply the concept to breaking the barrier, but still one of my greatest inventions."
The jokey tone warrants an amused snort from the boss monster. She quiets to listen readily though, picking up her own mozzarella stick to snack on. A breaded stick full of cheese? What would humans invent next?
"You made his soul?" That was certainly something Toriel had never heard before. She knew Mettaton was Alphy's creation to some regard, but specifics always escaped her given her previous limited interaction with the young man. Now it's... hard for her to picture just that. "How does one make a soul? You did not give up a piece of your own soul to manifest his?"
Alphys chews on a mozzarella stick as Toriel speaks, her expression mostly staying consistent as she begins to ask questions. This is one lie that she's trained herself to maintain very well.
"Well, it's a very complicated and technical process," Alphys says casually, her mouth somewhat full. She takes a sip of her drink to wash down the cheese, and then eats another. "And also, somewhat of a trade secret of mine, you see... There's some concern that people could try to copy Mettaton, to potentially disastrous results! And, haha, I'd really feel like it was my fault if something like that happened, you know?"
She swallows and grins. "Anyway, I don't think Mettaton could handle there being another person just like him."
