A. For Tarn

(originally here)
[It would be inevitable that they would meet again after their... altercation. Megatron could still feel some lingering effects of Tarn's voice power. It was much better than when he'd been practically useless on the ground after throwing Tarn into the power array, but he needed more time to fully recover from the off-tune flicker and flaring of his once nearly extinguished spark.]

[He sees Tarn stumble and struggle as he goes to take a walk, and even then, manages to frown empathetically.]

The Fool's Energon takes some time to get accustomed to. It won't always be this bad.

[As one might think, Tarn doesn't look particularly happy to see Megatron.

His tanks twist in embarrassment that he has to be seen in this pathetic and weakened state. It's such a far cry from the heightened power that had been coursing through his frame during their last meeting. The hulking strength behind the Nuke supplemented leader of the DJD was like night and day with this sulking, stumbling failure of a mech.

He finds it difficult to look directly at Megatron, but after a moment he manages to catch his optics. Tarn makes certain that he meets Megatron with nothing but pure, burning, hatred. It wouldn't do to let any of his insecurity to leak through.]

When I want your input on the matter I will ask for it.

[Even though Tarn was undoubtedly a monster, even though he'd tortured Riptide to death and would have killed them all if he had the chance, Megatron doesn't hate Tarn in return.]

[When the Decepticon gives him a glare full of utter loathing, all he can find himself able to muster is a soft look of understanding. An odd kindness that had been absent from his face for millions of years. Most of his lifetime. He takes a few steps closer so they are at conversational distance.]

Have you ever thought of why you must continue to kill and maim to prove your point?

[The look that Megatron gives him-- that almost gentle understanding— this isn’t the Megatron that he knew. The concept shakes Tarn to his core. It's like some sort of awful mirror-verse. He stops, his gaze sliding into suspicious confusion, before turning right back to it’s fury.]

As if you don’t already know. That’s how you were undone, wasn’t it, Megatron. Compassion. I won’t make the same mistakes that you have. I won’t leave the fight behind me for a soft life of comfort and peace while there is still a war to wage. The Decepticons need guidance to victory.

[ this man needs a therapist.]

No. I merely began to ask myself questions.

[Megatron is steady as Tarn falters, hopeful that he is having some sort of impact. He continues:]

But I should remind you that it was not the strength of my fists that inspired you to fight, was it? It was a far more powerful tool. The power of the word.

If you truly wish to fight on behalf Cybertronian happiness, would you rather not wish to inspire others, rather than make them fear you?

Enough, Megatron. Is fear not what you chose to educated me on? is that not the script that you fed me?

[Tarn sounds tired. He is weary of this pointless conversation.

It isn't that Tarn isn't articulate, or intelligent, enough to properly inspire others towards the Decepticons. It's that for millions of years he has been trained and told that his duty is to scare people into staying the course.

Fighting and threatening is easy-- familiar even. He has an entire script to follow telling him when to press a victim and when to draw back. He knows when to go for a kill and at what point thier death will have the most meaning.

It's how he has earned respect.]

I have asked myself many questions over the course of this war. But, will not be swayed. Commanding the Decepticon Justice Division is my duty to the Decepticon cause.

It is what I taught you, yes. But like many things I adopted and imposed on the Decepticons, it was wrong. One more misplaced step down the path of the war.

[He doesn't expect Tarn to immediately accept it, but at least he was listening. And perhaps that would be the only thing he would need to do.]

Change can be a frightening thing when you're set in what was taught. But it's never too late for you to learn a new lesson.

Oh please, Megatron.
[Tarn finds himself laughing bitterly at the pure absurdity of the ex-con's commentary. It's a wholely unpleasant sound when paired with the pure hatred shining from Tarn's optics. ]

Don't talk to me like I'm some misguided youngling. I am fully capable of handling change if the idea behind it is not completely absurd. I've been weakened enough as it is, I don't need your Autobots to sense any further instability.

The nature of change will always create instability.

[He seems unfazed by Tarn's cynical, defensive reaction.]

It's not something you should fear.
