[The other gem flinches, stopping as well. She has so many questions for Lapis, and so many things she wants to make sure that the new crew-member is made aware of, but this attitude is kind of a roadblock. With little detail on the Malachite situation, her line of thinking just does not make any sense to her.]

I don't get it. What happened with you two? I know we weren't all exactly friends back during the Earth mission, but Jasper mentioned something about you betraying her, and something about fusion, and she never really gave me much more detail than that... Why are you so bent on destroying her?

[She's upset, but, also, it sounds like she legitimately wants to understand where Lapis is coming from.]

[Lapis looks out towards the ocean, not answering Peridot for a few moments.]

She was going to hurt Steven. I had to do what was needed to keep him safe. [That isn't the entire truth. It was true she did what she did to save Steven, but there was also some sick enjoyment in dragging down someone as tall and mighty as Jasper down to her own suffering. A part of her enjoyed inflicting that pain onto someone else - the pain of being trapped within yourself and no foreseeable way of escape or saving.

That is, until everything went out of control and even Lapis was left barely able to control the reins.]

We fused into Malachite and I took control. Homeworld isn't what I remember it to be. How can I be a traitor to a world I don't even recognize now? [She grits her teeth and turns away from watching the sun ripple off the waves. Lapis looks back at Peridot.]

I gave her a taste of her own medicine, that's all. It's what she deserves.

[Peridot listens to her whole story without even once attempting to interrupt. She just stares. Observes. Contemplates everything Lapis is saying and waits for a long moment after she's done before picking up her end of the conversation again.]

Things are different here. [For all that it sounds like she's making a non-sequitur, as she keeps explaining that hardly seems to be the case.] And I mean that in the most literal, metaphysical sense. Reality, time - It all seems like it functions the same way as our home universe at a first glance, but things are horribly, aggravatingly wrong here. Jasper and I have both been on the Moira for the better part of an entire Earth year now, and for a good portion of that time, Steven was even here too! And she never once tried to crush him, or maim him, or anyone else on the ship, for that matter!

[She sighs heavily, staring into the middle distance in the direction of the water.] Plus, you know, it's not as if this crew has been entirely civil or devoid of violence. There have been fights between crew members, murders and assaults... But Jasper hasn't been involved in any of them!

You weren't fused with her! [She snaps, hands clenching at her sides.] After all that time I know her- I know just what kind of person she is! [But even Lapis knows deep down that might not be true. Maybe there's some inkling of truth to what Peridot is saying - she was dingy at times, but she wouldn't try to lie this adamantly.

But truth or not Lapis was loathe to even try to accept it as such. Her time as Malachite was still fresh in her mind, an open crack on her gem that left deep and jagged edges. She didn't want to see Jasper as anyone but the other half of the monster they both became under the ocean. It was easier for her this way.

Slowly she relaxes her fists and the anger that burned behind her eyes dulls down to a weary glaze that only further illustrates Lapis' deep-seeded exhaustion. The lull of the ocean waves behind them does nothing to bring her comfort.]

I'm tired, Peridot.

[The smaller gem flinches when she snaps, though anyone more informed of Lapis's situation could hardly blame her for doing so. Still, Peridot doesn't quite get it. Jasper is abrasive, sure... Potentially dangerous? Yes. But... It's hard to imagine her being the kind of threat that Lapis is making her out to be.

She fidgets uncomfortably, tensing and relaxing her disembodied fingers and glancing off to the side, eyes fixed on the ground. She wants to understand... No. It's vital she understands what Lapis is going through, if the three of them are going to have any hope of getting out of this dimension and going home.]

Um. C...Can I ask you something? [she asks cautiously.] What is the very last memory you have, from prior to your arrival through the Ingress?
