"Open up, and let them in."

He makes an irritated noise in the back of his throat when he finds the child is trying to help. It's not anger at Kurt, but at himself. Peter knows he's a pitiable mess right now but he doesn't like people knowing that.
He almost thinks to try to take the canteen away from the child when he sees it. Not to keep it for himself, though he's not so gone as to think that wouldn't be what inevitable happened. But because he doesn't think a child should be dealing with the ugly feedback loop he's stuck in.
It doesn't matter. Kurt's already gone, disappearing and reappearing in a way that Peter would almost think was speed if he himself wasn't fast enough to keep up. Teleportation. That's a new one.
"I would have taken a yes, actually. Powers don't always mean mutant around here." Wanda was a prime example of that. "But that was pretty cool. Teleporting? Really? And you got your powers pretty young."
Not that much younger than Peter had, but still. He hadn't been so in control back then.
no subject
He probably could have went simply with 'friend', though he felt like going with that seemed rather vague. Kurt and Jean hadn't spent much time together - not like they'd gotten a chance to, but that was something that could be worked on.
It's clear that Peter is frustrated and while he's hopeful that he's helping instead of hindering, part of him thinks he should mind his own business. If only caring less was in his nature.
"... I see. I am a mutant, then." The boy drops into a crouch, shoulders tucking between his knees, hands settling at his feet. "Oh, that's because in all actuality, I'm seventeen."
Another shift - only to flick his tail around so the heart-shaped end can hover near his shoulders in his hunched position. "Something happened to my body when I arrived here."
no subject
Peter tilts his head back to look at Kurt, a slight frown on his face. "So you're another one from a future no one wants to tell me about. Did Charles really tell you my name or do you know me? Don't worry about freaking me out, Jean already managed that."
The admittance of age makes the frown deepen. The admittance that something was going on with the newcomers makes him groan. "You just came here, right? Have you heard of anyone else having something weird going on with them? Other than powers related. You know, if you're not just trying to bluff your age. Which I wouldn't try if I were you. They might be kind of out of commission but we've got a lot of psychics around."
no subject
His lips press into a thin line, fingers curling into his palms and his head dipping forward. "We were--are?--on a team together. If you really want to know anything about the future, I can tell you what I know." Charles would probably be angry with him, but that's a risk he's willing to take.
"Right. Not long after my arrival, I met someone who had a watched fused to his arm." He makes an offended sounding noise, scowls and rises back up to his full height, which is no more than three and a half feet. "Why would I lie about my age? I have no reason to!"
no subject
"Yeah. Sometimes crap happens here with the Ingress, uh, the machine that brought you here. A couple of months back it fused glass into a bunch of people. It was pretty awful, actually." Peter wrinkles his nose and shakes his head. It had been a little terrifying, actually. Peter felt lucky he hadn't been effected.
"You have plenty of reason to. I tried to lie about my age all the time when I first got on the ship." Mostly in an ill attempt to try to impress a girl that had went terribly anyway. Having a psychic sister on board meant that hadn't lasted long.
no subject
The thought of someone having glass morphed into their body makes him wince, sleeve-covered hands lifting to press over his face. He shakes his head, lowering his hands and whimpering while attempting to fight back the nausea rising in his stomach. "That is dreadful! How did people survive?" Kurt doesn't want to try and imagine the excruciating amount of pain they might have been in.
"Ja, well, I am not lying. Once everything goes back to normal, you will see with your own two eyes." There's a huff and his arms raise to tuck across his chest, the spade of his tail lashing wildly with irritation.
no subject
"We've got pretty good doctors around here. And not everyone did survive. It happened around the same time the ship was attacked." Peter pauses, turns the canteen over in his hands and tries to keep the flicker off emotion off his face. "A lot of people died."
The act is childish enough to get a small smile out of Peter. Kurt could pretend to be older all he wanted, and could very well be as it wouldn't be the strangest thing Peter has seen, but Peter knew a child's irritation when he saw it. Lucky that he'd always been fond of children. "Yeah, yeah. I'll look forward to saying I told you so, little guy."
no subject
Because Peter did have a choice.
The latter comment and seeing Peter's features barely hint toward it are enough to make him fall silent for the moment. He loosens his arms and slides his hands up his front, cupping them around his cheeks in distress. "They did?"
He tries his best to fight back the quiet growl thrumming in his chest (which, to be honest, sounds more like an angry purr than anything), but to no avail; Kurt isn't exactly menacing in his normal form, so there's no way he's even remotely intimidating like this. "And I will look forward to saying the same."
no subject
He is used to having kids around, after all. He's hardly in the position to turn down friendships. And, well, even as much as he likes to pretend sometimes, Peter isn't enough of an ass to turn away someone who seems to actually like him.
"Yea," he responds quietly. "A lot did. I guess we were lucky that something about the ship sometimes brought people back from the dead. I think everyone who got died from it came back."
He snorts again, smile turning less forced and more true. "Yeah, yeah. You show me little boy blue."
no subject
His smile doesn't linger though, as Peter returns to explaining the incident with the people dying. Although, shock overtakes his features at the mentioning of them being brought back from the dead. There was no way that was really possible; when someone died, that was it - the end.
... wasn't it?
"That seems inconceivable. I have never, ever heard of dead people being brought back to life. Then again, I did not think I would be on a planet like this, so perhaps I should have a more open mind."
He huffs, balls his tiny hands up and wrinkles his nose, but can't fight the grin that threatens to reveal his true feelings on the matter. "My name is Kurt and I will show you!"
no subject
"Dude, get ready to have everything you thought you knew turned on its head. Monsters? Totally real. Giant robots? All over the place? People rise from the dead, there's, like, a dozen people walking around with magic and back on the ship we had a tree that grew cats." He pauses. He should probably ask someone what happened to the ship's wild pets. "Pretty much everything impossible is something real around here."
He shrugs, sighing. "I'd say you'd get used to it but since we're supposed to be heading toward our way home you probably won't. But ask Jean if you don't believe it. The ship could be really freaky."
The little display makes Peter laugh again. He's reminded of his little sister and all her antics when she decided she was going to be mad at him. "Kurt, boy blue, kid, eh all sounds the same to me."
no subject
From that entire explanation, Kurt will simply point out one thing for the moment: "There was a tree that grew cats?" Monsters, robots, the undead, and people with magical powers? Those all sound far more 'normal' than something actually giving life to animals that are not from that type of animal itself. "That is ... wow, this space trip just got even more bizarre."
He shakes his head, waving both hands in a somewhat dismissive manner, "I believe you. I mean, it sounds like something from a horror or sci-fi movie, which should not be as surprising, since we are supposed to be on a spaceship ..."
Kurt blinks at the laugh, lets his smile fully show and drops into a sit on the ground, glad to see that Peter is (hopefully) feeling better. "Calling me 'kid' will not be the same when I am normal again. Surely, you are not much older than I am."
no subject
"Yeah. Well, they were more like kittens. They grew like flowers, then dropped off and ran around doing, uh, cat things." He shrugs. "Apparently it was a genetic experiment, some science thing. Someone made it grow like that. And yeah, super bizarre."
Not quite the most bizarre when coming on the heels of monsters and magic and flying whales, but the tree had been one of the first things to make Peter realize just how strange the universe he was trapped in really was.
"That depends. How old are you pretending to be again? I think I'm technically like eighteen, maybe nineteen by now. It's a little hard to figure out with that year we lost a while back."
no subject
He wrinkles his nose, trying to imagine tiny cats sprouting from tree limbs then simply falling off, being left to their own devices - whatever that may be. "That is exceedingly strange. Do you think they all made it off the ship all right?"
Because it would be a shame if all those poor kittens were lost to the wreckage. Kurt might have even suggested finding a way to get another tree to replace that one.
"I am seventeen. You have a year or two on me, but I am willing to bet that I am the more mature one." Spoken like a true 'adult', who seems to have no problem with sticking his tongue out at Peter in a playfully taunting manner.
no subject
He imagines there were plenty of people who would have tried to save them, if time had permitted. Even so, some had to have went through the ship after the wreck. Someone had to have checked on them.
“Oh boy. Yeah, you sound real mature.” Peter’s tone is joking but even he knows that it’s likely the truth. He’s not been known for his startling maturity while on the ship. He was certainly not known for it back on Earth. Jean had already proved to be far more mature than him and she was younger. Why shouldn’t Kurt be the same?
no subject
The blue boy doesn't want to think about it and thankfully, Peter seems more than willing to continue their back and forth joking, which proves to be a decent distraction.
"You think so?" It's a genuine inquiry; he knows that in his current 'form', he probably appears far from 'adult' and all, though once he's returned to normal, that will give him the chance to prove himself a little better. While this may not be the exact Peter that he remembers, he has a pretty good idea that they share the same level of maturity either way.
no subject
Peter keeps a serious look for a few second before he splits into a grin. "Dude, not really. It's sarcasm. But don't sweat it. I'm sure you're, like, real capable and everything." Any kid growing up a mutant had to be.
no subject
Perking at the sight of Peter's grin, Kurt rolls his eyes and offers a smirk of his own, arms moving to tuck his hands into the pockets of his coat. "Well, I like to think that I can handle things decently." Regardless of his current predicament with being small.
no subject
He rubs the back of his neck, looks down at the empty canteen with a sigh. "I got stuck in cryo for a while. It happens, sometimes. People get frozen, it sucks. It was one of the many weird things you had to put up with on the ship."
He laughs under his breath. "Right. Good for you kid. You'll need to, around here."
no subject
He also spares a glance toward the canteen, trying not to look too humiliated. Before he mentions anything about not knowing what 'cryo' is, the little blue mutant reaches for the container in his coat pocket, looks it over, then offers it out to Peter. "Here," he murmurs, "I spilled yours, so you can take mine. I just ... don't want to see you get sick."
And if Peter doesn't take it, he'll set it next to him because it's only fair. "Frozen? Is that what 'cryo' is?"
no subject
He stares at the canteen being offered. He should say no. It’s the polite thing to do. He shouldn’t be stealing from a child, shouldn’t be doing something he knew was only causing other people grief. “Thanks,” he muttered.
He offered his empty one in return, a way to ease the slight tug of guilt. Let Kurt go back and refill at his own leisure. Peter could stay here with this and continue to stew.
“Basically? You’d have to ask the doctors or scientists or whatever for a better explanation. But it’s were they stick your body when you’re, I don’t know, in a coma? Asleep? Sometimes people go in cryo and just come out different.” He shrugs. “It’s weird shit, man.”
no subject
Kurt nods at first, knowing that giving over his container of water completely defeats his earlier purpose, though he's already sure that even if he continuously tries to keep Peter from consuming the water, it's either going to make it worse or the older mutant will just continue to do it, regardless of him being around to stop it.
"You are welcome," he finally gets out, blinking then reaching to take the empty canteen Peter is offering. He shifts it from one hand to the opposite, tucks it into his pocket as a reminder to refill it later.
His lips downturn into a frown at that explanation, the spade of his tail slithering around to hover near the side of his right arm. "So, what I am understanding of this is that I do not want to end up in cryogenic sleep ever."
no subject
People left, the ones left behind mourned their absence. Things moved on. He'd seen plenty come and go on his near year aboard the ship. There were many he knew wanted to never see home again.
"You don't, but again. No one has control over it. Sometimes you just end up there. And if you get bad enough hurt, well, guess where you might get stuck until the doctors can sort you out?" He shrugs. "We were kind of subject to the universe's whims around here."
no subject
Kurt visibly droops though, sinking down into the overly large coat he has wrapped around his shoulders. To think that people could be taken against their will from something they were already adapted to ... He shivers, regardless of the fact that he's not exactly cold.
"We will all just have to be careful and make sure that no one gets badly injured." The only practical decision, obviously. "Things are different now with no ship, aren't they?"
no subject
"Don't let yourself worry to much about it. You can't spend all your time afraid something is going to happen. Whether it stays the same here or not." He suspects it will. Or will get worse. Maybe without the Ingress on the ship death will find permanency. Maybe when people fall into unconsciousness there will be no way to revive them. But that's not something anyone should dwell on.
