"Open up, and let them in."

I'm sorry, Miller. [There wasn't much else she could say. It sucked loosing people. She knew this first hand, and that they didn't have the luxury of devoting time to grief.]
no subject
[He's not happy about it, but he knows Bucky would want to be thought of as a soldier more than a victim. And he'll keep him in mind like that. Chico may have never had a chance to be anything else, but Jim Barnes knew exactly what he was doing.]
Harry died looking out for someone he cared about. I can respect that. If Ahab had been just a few hours later in rescuing me in Afghanistan, that's probably how I would have met my end. [He finishes another piece of meat, but this one he eats.]
Thanks, though. I appreciate it. [He's grateful for the consolation.]
no subject
We're in for a long road ahead, and I can only hope we all make it through to the end from here on out.
no subject
[He's still a little irritable about that. Their intel guy had no idea about anything on this planet, as far as he knew, and that's not his fault; it should have been passed on by their captains.]
[Most irritatingly, he doesn't know if they'll be able to talk even if he managed to corner them. Maybe it's been so long for them, they really can't offer any more warning for this place.]
More can make it than not. [He says with some confidence.] I say that on crew capabilities alone. They've been more exceptional than any base I've been on. [Or from any enemy his people have fought, and that says even more.]
no subject
Do you have something waiting for you back home?
no subject
Ahab and I have a base to take care of. It's our home. [That's not too much information, he guesses. Though in actuality, he's not sure how long he'll be there still. There's a lot of responsibility, a lot of bad decisions he has to make up for.]
[But that doesn't stop a wave of fond nostalgia.]
Even staying there as long as I did, getting fond of some of the people... it's different from something you built together. I don't want to go back to the way I was before I left. I had damaged eyes... I'm a little worried when I do, they'll go back to what they were. [His currently normal baby blue eyes narrow up behind his glasses.]
no subject
[She can't imagine that would be at all a pleasant fate to face - no mater how eager one is to get home.] This place is a blessing and a curse.
[There's no love lost in her tone, displaying how frustrated she was with things. It brought her her mother, but at the same time it revealed who Gabe had become. It gave her friends like Miller, and threw them into trial after trial. The slight moments of reprieve never really felt like enough to recover from one disaster until the next one hit.]
no subject
[Miller is used to disaster after disaster. Watching the threats of disease and nuclear war and engaging in constant efforts to save the world, knowing now Big Boss had been in his ivory tower the whole time. To a much lesser extent the Captains have been reminding him of that; he never sees them actually fighting.]
[But still.]
Ahab was about to be attacked while he was weak and in a coma. [Despite being blind to his truth at the time, he'll treat the tale as if Ahab were the center. After all, he told the man that if he didn't accept the sacrifices as having been to save him, they were ultimately a waste.]
So I went out into the field with a group of people. There were things sent after us. They were able to generate a mist. It was so thick we could barely make anything out, outside of our scout warning us there were "skulls in the mist". One by one, their voices went quiet over our radios. Next thing I knew I'd blacked out. That's when I lost my arm and leg. But over time, whatever that mist was ruined my eyes. Unlike with my arm and leg, it took it a little while to lose. I wore my sunglasses anyway, but after that I couldn't see without them.
Anyway. Long story short, they figured out how to fix what our experts couldn't do. With that, and all the things I learned... I was hoping we'd get here and a working Ingress would let us hang onto it. [Instead they get more mysterious bullshit, and no answers. No water, either.]
no subject
Well. I don't think the road is closed to us yet; it is just a little harder to navigate. [She's not giving up hope on finding an Ingress yet, even if it's getting harder to hold onto that optimism. She's not sure she wants to admit the alternative, to spend her lifetime here, hopping from one place to the next in search of the proverbial whale.]
no subject
Ahab saw evidence of some broken Ingresses. I'm hoping that our technicians can salvage parts.
[Though it is frustrating to not be able to do more than hope for the best.]
I guess it probably feels pretty good to be out of the suit, huh?
no subject
[She chuckles,] It does. I feel lighter, certainly, but I hadn't realized how long I'd been wearing it. I do worry that I won't have it on me the moment I need it here, though. How's your leg?
I thought I had replied and had not.
[But that's to worry about later. When he stops wondering if it would be for the best if all of them were destroyed.]
It's not so bad. I'm taking breaks, get medicine from the medical tent. Ever get those kinks worked out?
I do this too sometimes <3
[She chuckles a little with his question] Not expressly, although not having the weight of my jets on my back certainly helps. There's too much else going on that needs more attention than me whining about wanting a massage. [She shrugs, it's a little thing, and unless it becomes a big thing she's content to let it work itself out.]
no subject
Come on. I can help with that. Just don't tell Ahab, he'll give me a hard time for not getting one myself.
[And by "hard time" he means that he'll get a look of vague disappointment and frustration rather than what most people would construe as a scolding.]
Fair is fair, considering you helped me out.
no subject
[Fareeha acquieces, though, moving to sit where indicated.] I'll get you in return, that way no one has to get mad.
[Although it is a somewhat amusing idea; Ahab chiding Miller for not getting a massage.] You've known Ahab a long time, I'm assuming?
no subject
I've known him as long as he's known himself.
[He's not even sure if being dimly acquainted with who he was counts for anything.] We work well together, though. I'd greenlight missions and coordinate and distribute intel throughout, and he'd conduct them physically. We've both got a lot of experience with long stints in the field.
Makes it a little more homey, in a way.
no subject
[Fareeha had gotten used to the cluster of knots in her shoulders; the pain is deep but good as he works the tension our.]
It's good to have people here you are familiar with.
[She's thankful for her Overwatch family here, in add much as it naked this place a little more bearable; there's a shared experience. She's grateful enough for the friends she's meet here, but "homey" had it's perks.]
no subject
[He's thinking of Ocelot and John when he originally showed up. The consideration drifts, though, back to a warning a woman made.]
There was someone here who destroyed a city. Everyone connected to him reacted furiously when he arrived. But others that weren't acquainted with him stood up and demanded that he have the chance.
It can create a hell of a divide.
[He drags his knuckles and thumbs down either side of her spine, hunting out the points that are the worst of over-exerted muscles.] Have you been lucky or unlucky when it comes to that?
no subject
Mostly lucky. I grew up around Reinhardt and McCree, and now my mother is here. I hadn't seen her for years.
[She pauses as she tries to think about how to explain Reaper, and makes a small sound as Miller catches another sizeable knot. She bows her head further to let him work at it.]
There is someone else, though. Someone who has been targeting us. He didn't destroy an entire city, but ... he's already tried to kill me once and he's attacked some of the others.
no subject
[He's not met McCree or Reinhardt (not yet) but he's already inclined to think they're decent people, given how she's turned out.]
Has he attacked them on board the ship?
no subject
[She chances turning her head a little to grin at him, before facing forward again so he can work. It's doing wonders for her back and her spirit, in ways she didn't even know she needed. She's predisposed to toughing it out; in both physical and mental aspects. Still, going back to the subject of Reaper draws her a little more somber.]
He has. That was my first meeting with him.
no subject
[It reminds him faintly of the days back in the MSF, when it was common for them to drag in enemy factions into their ranks. Sometimes people would meet again and fight. But power suits, special abilities, those weren't so much of an issue there.]
[He settles his hands on his knees for now, leaning forward to give her his full attention. Just because the ship was gone and that meant he wasn't really head of security for anything anymore didn't mean he wasn't invested in keeping his people safe. And at some point she'd crossed that line into being one of his people, crew or not.]
What happened?
no subject
[She shifts a little to face him better, but she takes her time; it wasn't a pleasant encounter, and even four months later it still felt very vivid.]
I hadn't been on Marsiva long. I was ... out of armor, exploring, trying to get a feel for the layout of the ship. I don't know if he followed me or if he was already there and the opportunity arose, but he engaged me in conversation. I could tell he wasn't good news, but I wanted to keep him talking so I could try and figure out what he wanted. He mentioned targeting Overwatch and I was worried for my people here.
The thing is, I let him get too close. He attacked, and I couldn't dodge. He was stronger than me, and I couldn't break his grapple. [She flexes her hands into fists as she thinks about it, regretting again how foolish and stubborn she'd been. Her neck hurts where he'd grabbed her, where he'd bled her out, even though the wounds are long since healed. She ducks her head and takes a breath, trying to shake off the images, the relived pain and confusion.] He left me for dead, and if it wasn't for two quick-thinking individuals, I would have been.
no subject
[At least he can provide a mostly neutral ear (or at least an experienced one). A thin crease does knit up between those steep blonde brows, and his mouth tenses up like he's concentrating.]
[Knowing someone dangerous is stronger than you, too... funny thing is, that's how he ended up following John. Which isn't exactly a glowing endorsement.] You mentioned you had people you knew here. How much do they know about this? [The way she's moving reminds him of when he gets certain aches, the ones that come from uncomfortable memories. He'll just try to be careful not to make it too much worse. Not when one's own head can make someone hurt.]
no subject
[At this point, she pulls her legs up and links her arms around them, taking in a breath and setting her chin on her knees. The idea of telling her mother what happened has her stomach in knots, and she doubts Miller would be able to massage that away.] The thing is, I found out who he is; he used to be one of us. Part of the family, so to speak. He worked closely with my mother.
