"Open up, and let them in."

Family doesn't pull guns or knives on other family. That was the rule that Ahab and I always shared. If they broke it, then they no longer were.
He's no family to you. [Any more than John had been a father to David or Eli or David or Eli had been actual brothers to each other. "Brother", a word shared like an insult between them. "Family", here, said as if it's a burden of connection. That's not what it should be.]
Do you think your mother or Reinhardt would be in danger?

[But she thinks she's had enough talking about her mother for now. She stands and stretches, enjoying the new, fresh feeling of a knot-free back. She taps Miller on his shoulder and motions him out of his seat.]
Okay, your turn.

[It's difficult to think about that being rejected. He knows what it's like to not be listened to. As much as he genuinely cares about Venom, having been ignored so many times in favor of Ocelot was a little wearing. For all the admiration in him, that part always left him feeling miserable.]
[Surely he hopes that her mother would listen.]
[But rather than mention that concern, he positions himself in front of her.] My right shoulder is capped with metal. It holds on the generator for my arm prosthetic.

[She settles in on the seat behind him, and gets to work, starting at the base of his neck and working through the clusters with a firm hand.]
What do you think we'll find when we get to the center of all this?
no subject
[Because successes are few and far between.]
[He wobbles with he motion of her hands, feeling them work through the knots. He closes his eyes and grunts because he's ridiculously stiff. He never lets anyone do this.]
This guy... think you and your friends can keep him from hurting anyone? Because if I were you, I'd consider talking to Tony Stark about some suit enhancements.
no subject
[She works at his knots, firmly kneading her thumb into the clusters and trying to ease them out of their tension.] You're just about as bad as I was; I can't blame Ahab for getting on you.

It's not easy letting someone at my back. Truth is, I didn't even let Bucky there for very long. [And he'd thought very highly of him. Perhaps it was the resemblance to Chico that put him off there; there had been nothing all that untrustworthy about him.]
[It's an enormous gesture of trust. Letting her near where he's so often expecting a knife. It also might mean he's finally letting up a bit. After all, no Cipher here.]

I'm honored that you trust me so. It doesn't sound like you've had an easy time of it and I appreciate you giving me this chance. [She stops kneading for a moment to just squeeze his good shoulder lightly, before going back to work. She lets the silence hang, and then in sharing the vulnerability she figures it must have taken for him to admit that, opens up a little more herself.]
It's been difficult for me to get close to people. I was a different person growing up, and certain things put me on a path to ... be more independent and self-reliant. I found it easier to close off. I've only learned recently it's not healthy to do that, but letting people in? People I don't know, it's been hard. You and I, I feel like we're kindred spirits, if I may be so cliche. We've got the same goals.
[They're protectors, they strive to do the right thing.] Thank you, for giving me this chance.

Hardly any of us have had an easy time of it. [He turns his head one way to pop his neck, and then the other. Sometimes he's not at all concerned with the fact he's now middle aged and other times he's hyper aware of it.] Not a lot of us with much reason to trust, either.
[His own uneasy suspicions have been fewer and far between. On a ship he cares little about and only a few people he's particularly attached to, this place has been good for his paranoia. But still, he's kept up barriers between him and people getting too close. Not many have worked past them.] One thing I'm pretty sure of, though, you couldn't come off as harmless if you wanted to. [And that's a huge point in her favor. Kind and noble? Yes. Harmless and innocent? Not a chance.]
[Though with a few of the larger knots worked out, he rolls his shoulders.] I think you got the worst spots.
no subject
There, now Ahab can't get mad at you.
