the outer gate
"Open up, and let them in."

The Moira is no more.

With the damage done to the ship due to the timeslip, all that remains is a burning wreckage and parts to be taken—if the crew can find anything in the pieces. Recovery and headcounts are the main objective for the first several hours of being planetside, and once things have settled just enough, Captain Ira calls for a meeting and addresses those who are able in person to explain the situation. He draws a rough map of the area and explains where he believes they are - according to the terrain - and where they must go. For anyone who’s listening, he describes things like an “Outer Gate”, an “Inner Gate” and “gate sectors”. Believing this to be the best course of action, all crew are asked to explore and gather what they think they’ll need to make the long journey towards the central point of the Hub. Because the MIDs are no longer working due to the lack of a network, the Captains distribute a newer tech called the TAB. It serves the same functions as the MID but is lighter, slimmer, and has the ability to stick to any surface.

WELCOME TO THE MIDWAY HUB

Now that the smoke from the crash has cleared, and injured crew have been tended to, the Captains get everyone ready for departure by explaining what they know of the Hub. Almost stone-like, the creators built a domed workspace in the largest solid space on the planet they could find. Gates are the only way inside, and anyone who catches a glimpse of the compound will see that parts of the dome are cracked. Yet, everything still appears to be relatively intact. The Midway Hub’s terrain is very rocky and difficult to walk on at times. Below the surface is a honeycomb of intermittently dense and brittle stone that makes travel difficult due to the unpredictable nature of what lies beneath the crew’s feet. Those who can develop the tech from what’s left of the debris might be able to create something to determine which route is the safest. Ships and small crafts can be used to fly, but landing is a problem—rocks jut up in sharp peaks and the clearer spots can't handle their weight. Vegetation is sparse, consisting of twisted dark gray thistles that have sprung up from cracks in the rock and burn when in direct contact with skin, and what could be considered small animals here can be seen scurrying away the closer crew get to them.

WEEK ONE
Crew are asked to hook cryo beds together and to use any appropriate vehicles that can be made or fashioned to fit the terrain to carry injured crew on the journey to the center of the Hub. Supplies are gathered, and the Captains, as well as any crew who want to, give the Moira a proper sendoff, heads bowed as they say goodbye to what’s been their home. Traveling starts out slowly, a line of a hundred-plus crew members making their way slowly forward. Stops are frequent, but camping for rest only occurs at night. Crew are assigned watch shifts, fires are built, injured tended to, and those who are able are asked to explore nearby caves and hunt for food.

Something akin to deer, though striped and only to be found in pairs, can be stumbled across at night. Throngs of dark purple mammels begin to follow the Moirans on their trip as well. They are friendly, curious, and eat the thistle. Meet the intelligent, watchful predators that aren’t easily scared away and follow the crew from a distance as if waiting to pounce. The thistle can be eaten, but only if cooked first, and those who sample the chewy plant raw will experience a burning sensation in their throat that doesn’t go away until the cooked version is consumed. During the first week, water can’t be found.

Anyone who does hunt, gather, or explore should make sure to that their TABS are on and it’s suggested that nobody goes alone.

Nearing the end of the first week, an Ingress can be spotted close by that crew can explore. If anyone dares to go inside, they will find the texture of the ground and surrounding walls to be rather soft. If inspected closely, crew will discover that what they originally thought to be rock is actually a living organism that’s fed off the energy of the Ingress it’s attached itself to. It’s not harmful and squishy to the touch. If pressed hard enough, it secretes a turquoise liquid with the consistency of water that might make a good substitute for that very thing.
WEEK TWO
When crew finally pass through the sector gates, a strange sensation encompasses them, and a depowering of sorts goes into effect. The creators put in security measures meant to put all visitors on equal footing as well as to protect themselves from harm. All crew will essentially have the strength and abilities of the average human. An unforeseen issue, this causes Captain Thán to slip into a coma as he is no longer able to continue to recover at a steady pace, and with the loss of the former Captain’s abilities, crew can no longer be brought back if they die. For the first time, all Moirans are subject to permanent death.

During this week of travel, broken ingress machines and parts will be found scattered among the rocks, and new crew will come through. Unfortunately, these Ingresses aren’t in good shape, and anyone coming through will be in varying states of distress—some physical and some mental. New individuals will either have suffered an age slip, growing older or younger than their original body, some form of body transformation (perhaps that shiny thing they were wearing is now part of them somehow), or an extreme weakness they had never been subjected to before arriving on the Midway Hub. The new people will be offered to join their group, once found, and seasoned crew will be asked to explain to them where they are going and what they know.

The rest of the week will be a mix of greeting the new arrivals and continuing to travel to the center of the Hub. The closer they get, the less frequently they’ll see animals, and more caves will begin to pop up.
WEEK THREE
Entering the third week of travel, settlements and houses begin to crop up and are prime areas for exploration and general supplies. Those who go inside may find items that have been left behind and evidence showing that those of varying species and cultures lived in the homes. Some appeared to have been scientists while others were explorers, but all living quarters are deserted. Crew who are less lucky in their search might come away with no fresh supplies, and others might walk into traps or safeguards left behind by previous tenants; these come in many forms, from mild paralysis to temporary unconsciousness. As there are more residences, there are also more caves. The entrances vary in size, and light sources will be needed to explore. Once inside, crew can find purple underwater streams, which can be consumed, and glowing surfaces. When crew drink the water, it temporarily restores powers, a few minutes tops, and then, extreme lethargy settles in for a couple of hours.

Further into the cave systems, crew will come across these lovely creatures that are attracted to sound and track through scent. They are highly dangerous and attack simply to feed. Killing them, though, is surprisingly simple as they are just as vulnerable and weak as everyone else. They are vicious in demeanor but only as strong as an average human.

The closer to the Inner Gate crew get, the less homes, wildlife, and more caves there will be.
WEEK FOUR
The Captains, aware that the crew is exhausted, stop and make camp for the first few days. Someone mentions that it’s the holidays where they’re from, and the Captains do their best to throw a party. Set up at the base of a cave, tents are built and fires roar. Soft music is played in the form of guitar, thank you Ira, and Cúrre brings out some legumes that taste like cherries when roasted. There isn’t much in the way of decorations, but crew are encouraged to dig through their pac-discs and contribute to the festivities.

After a brief respite, crew learn that the entrances to Gate A and Gate B are inside one of the caves but any signs or markings have long since worn away or been destroyed. Groups are split, TABS are synced, and crew explore carefully until an entrance is found. Crew discover Gate A first, and all crew are contacted to gather there. The Captains will remain at the cave entrance until all crew are accounted for, and then, they’ll enter through the gate together.

[And who needs a bike when you can S P R I N T. It seems, however, that 76 used all his humor on making that one joke. The instant they reach the campsite, he drops the table with little fanfare. It makes a lot of noise.]

You got a way to break this down?

[Or is he doing that, too?]
tearmeanewone: (082)

It's okay!

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2016-12-18 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[She wouldn't draw her own conclusions if there was anything offered from the other side-- she's learned that from example, that being fed information from one side when nothing is offered about the other is a dangerous way to form conclusions.]

[But what choice does she have when he won't talk to her? Won't offer anything at all aside from silence or mechanical sounds she can't interpret? Handfuls of words she has to string together into something she can figure out?]

[She waits for a while, looking at his mask, wanting some kind of correction or indication of what he's thinking, what page he's on. But when it doesn't happen, Elizabeth isn't left with much aside from the assumption that she's right: they can't understand each other.]

[She stands up, brushes off the seat of her pants, picks up her bottle and starts walking past him to go back to the party.]

Stay safe out here.

[She says it only to take the high ground, and not walk away without saying a word. No reason to stop doing all the talking, after all.]

Oh believe me, no offense taken. [She laughs and waves her hand.] Even I don't want to go back there. I'd take cave-dwellers over going home any day.

[Wow, that disappeared fast. Elizabeth blinks, realizing she'd expected J to maybe take it slow, savor it, something-- but maybe she just needed to down it all. Goodness knows Elizabeth can understand the sentiment if not participate in it.]

[She has a seat across from J, unscrewing the cap on the rum again.]
You don't think our luck's going to change?

[She sounds just about as optimistic as J does, but Elizabeth can hope can't she? She's lost her friends, her love, and her home-- as far as she's concerned there's not much else for her to do.]

[He can't possibly begrudge Frisk for wanting to help people--he'd been this way too, once.

With that realizarion, he heaves a sigh, resigning himself to this.
]

I'll wait with you.

[Yes, normally sitting around drawing in a dim cave while the crew makes a highly uncomfortable and grueling march towards... something, would seem like a ridiculously fluffy thing to do. But to Elizabeth, it's a gift. When Booker had asked her what she'd wanted to do now that she was free, she'd told him she'd wanted to see everything. Despite spending time being omniscient and everything that she's been through in both Columbia and Rapture, that feeling hasn't stopped. Now she has a whole universe to see, and these moments where she comes across something she'd never expected to see are treasures. Sure she could just take a photograph and move on, but she wants to spend the time to experience it. Drawing always used to help her channel her feelings of longing, friendship, admiration, all sorts of things. That hasn't changed either.]

Yeah, you're probably right. [She brushes some eraser bits off of her page.] Force of habit. I did run into one of them day after last. Strangest bite I've ever had. You know, because their jaws open up-- [She holds her hands over her face and opens them like shutters.] --like this.
psychadrellic: (that's enough idiocy for one day)

[personal profile] psychadrellic 2016-12-18 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[And then he gets a good look at her face...welp.]

You're bleeding from the nose.

[Clearly that takes precedence over whether or not the rest of the group is slowing down. He immediately reaches for the first-aid kit he has stored in his pac-disc.]

If they aren't, we can always catch up.

[And if they are, then it doesn't matter because they probably won't need to catch up. There's plenty of clean, white gauze in his kit, so he takes a generous wad of the stuff and offers it to her.]
tearmeanewone: (181)

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2016-12-18 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[...oh.]

[Elizabeth takes the news that's she's bleeding with less gravity than someone else might. She practically rolls her eyes as though to say this is more nuisance than anything else, and takes the offered gauze.]

Thank you. [This will at least help mop it up once her brain stops struggling to acclimate. She dabs and looks at it, sure enough she's bleeding.]

This will stop soon, don't worry-- I used to get them all the time. [There's a spot where they can sit against the gate, Elizabeth nods to it.] I just need to rest for a minute.

Hunting / Gathering

[personal profile] psychadrellic 2016-12-18 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
[Unlike unusually large human men in equally unusually large suits of metal plate, Thane is all about stealth. Ambushing and cleanly killing the curious, thistle-eating mammalian creatures is child's play. Bringing them back to be skinned and prepared for eating is a little more tricky. Thane's a strong guy, but the creatures are large and unwieldy to carry.

The one he's selected this time is a bit larger than usual, and he's kicking himself for misjudging its size prior to killing it. Getting it back is going to be one hell of a chore...

...Unless that familiar-sounding clanking he hears nearby belongs to the man he thinks it does...!

...Well, of course it does. Nobody else clanks when they walk like that. Thane appears from nowhere (as usual) right in Reinhardt's line of sight.]

Reinhardt? I'm hoping to ask a favor, if it's not too much trouble.

Week 3

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2016-12-18 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yikes Harry, warn a girl before you yank her around.]

[But when he points out the wire, she's glad he yanked her. Who knows what would have happened if she'd touched that.]

I don't know about you, but I never thought to put a trip wire in a room where there wasn't anything worth rummaging through. [She grins and carefully steps over the wire.]
psychadrellic: (that's what you think)

(one) Camp

[personal profile] psychadrellic 2016-12-18 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[Now that things are settling down, Thane familiarizing himself with the camp layout, and the faces within it. There aren't any new faces, of course, but quite a few missing ones. Although he's not close - or even really acquainted - with everyone aboard the Moira, if he's seen a face, he'll remember it. If he doesn't see that face anymore, he'll note that, as well.

There are a lot of faces that he's (perhaps selfishly) glad are still present, and the gentle Doctor Ziegler's is definitely one of them. He's not in the least surprised by how cozy her camp appears. Indeed, the only thing that would have surprised him is if it weren't.

He approaches openly - something he still has to make an effort to do, even after all these months - and stands before her with a small, warm smile.]

You seem to be managing well.
psychadrellic: (that's what you think)

☄ REDUCE TO OMNI-GEL

[personal profile] psychadrellic 2016-12-18 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's been a crazy few...months. Year. Year months. While Thane has, naturally, encountered the Mako on his various day-to-day wanderings of the Moira, he had somehow never encountered both the Mako and Shepard together at one time.

Until now.

It's obvious to him what she's doing with the omni-gel, so he doesn't even bother to question that. Whether or not he surprises her with his sudden remark is entirely up to exactly how focused she is on her task.]

This must be the infamous Mako I've heard so many horror stories about.
psychadrellic: (guys is my mascara running)

[personal profile] psychadrellic 2016-12-18 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
You're welcome.

[Somehow, he hadn't expected her to be overly concerned about bleeding, so her reaction isn't at all surprising to him.]

I'm getting the feeling that will soon be the general consensus. [Resting for a minute, that is. A quick glance at the rest of the crew nearby confirms that Thane and Elizabeth aren't the only ones feeling the effects of passing through the gate.] Let's have a seat.

[And he'll walk with her over to the place she indicated.

...He's not quite ready to leave the nosebleed alone, though.]

I've only ever witnessed humans bleed from the nose after a serious injury. Is there another cause for such an event, or should we be locating medical attention for you?
gentlemenpreferblondes: (Men grow cold)

[personal profile] gentlemenpreferblondes 2016-12-18 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's a bit silly that she had first asked her to serve the best tasting when she drank it up so fast, barely tasting anything else but the slight burn of alcohol. And as she sees Elizabeth to start unscrewing the cap again she brings her glass closer, expecting it to get refilled.

The question makes J huff and give her an amused look. How cute.]

Whenever has the luck been on our side? Especially after the new guys took the command.

[personal profile] gentlemenpreferblondes 2016-12-18 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
With that imagination it's pretty impressive that you've dared to come out to explore the places. Who knows what kind of boogieman could be lurking around the corner.

[personal profile] ex_forcechoke292 2016-12-18 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oh, he's still definitely breathing all right; in fact, he sounds like he needs a respirator with all that heaving. It does, however, eventually subside, and it takes him a full minute staring at the ground in front of his knees to register that he's heard someone behind him. It's only then that he finally turns to the side, and wholly unconvincingly says:]

I'm fine. It's...fine.

["Fine" quickly becoming complex code for meaning nearly anything but fine.]

[personal profile] ex_forcechoke292 2016-12-18 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I'm not. [He doesn't like being this honest, but he has nothing more left to hide behind. No Force to reassure him in spite of his constant doubts. And he knows, even if he had company who understood, they'd still be at a loss with how to combat this whole situation--let alone Anakin's sour mood--so it's not pitiable. It just is.]

But that doesn't make you wrong.

[He sighs again, and shifts his gaze to his fingers idly playing with the ground beneath them.]

I've just always been told to avoid distraction. It's not good for me, I indulge too much, that isn't how the Jedi operate...on and on. [Never mind that he never wants anything tangible. Just to be able to feel and think on his own.] You may be right, but...I'm supposed to be better than this. Things like this aren't supposed to happen.

[personal profile] ex_forcechoke292 2016-12-18 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[The chuckle he gives is breathless, barely even there and already so tired.] More than well. Especially if it's getting into trouble, you excel at that.

[As if he doesn't by himself. Or surround himself with people who behave much the same.]

But-- [She functions just fine because she's learned how to survive on her own, with the talents she's cultivated...or was maybe born it, it's hard to see Padmé as anything but that passionate freedom fighter, even as a child. There is no loss here to make up for.]

It's like having to learn how to walk again when you know you know better. [I should be better than this, he thinks. It remains unsaid.]

[personal profile] ex_forcechoke292 2016-12-18 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, because this inane idiocy is something to be proud of.

[It doesn't sound remotely proud, nor terribly thankful of the fact that Badou has a point: he's too focused on his agitation to worry about how he feels otherwise.]

Do you bother everyone you meet like this?
tearmeanewone: (136)

[personal profile] tearmeanewone 2016-12-18 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[That's good, at least Thane isn't freaking out over a little human blood being where it shouldn't be. Elizabeth holds her nose and looks around at the crew, seeing what Thane is-- everyone is going to need a minute. What a surprise.]

[She sits down, glad to have something solid under her and against her back. The other time this happened, she'd woken up on a floor so who knew if this had happened while she was unconscious. She hadn't understood what had happened at first, but this time she'd walked through a rather obvious gate and everyone else around her is experiencing difficulties. She also hadn't backtracked to a place she didn't belong in, causing her brain to scramble like an overdone egg.]

I suppose this could be classified as a 'serious injury'. [She lifts the gauze to give Thane a wry smile.] I guess to you and most of everybody on this ship, I don't exactly read as someone with 'abilities'. I should be the one helping everyone else.

[Elizabeth is quiet for a moment while she thinks. Everyone she'd entrusted her secret to was gone, and back then she'd only done it as a precaution. Once she'd actually had it restored, then everyone was sucked back into the Ingress leaving her with a dangerous power and no one who would vouch for her or it. Her only choice was to keep it hidden.]

[And then Ploiatos happened, and she'd opened a tear in front of the team responsible for destroying him and flung his ashes out into another timeline, where he'd never find his way back to them even if a miracle happened and he recovered. The people in the room had seen, but she's not certain they understood. Was it only a matter of everyone being settled before her secret was dragged out into the open? Did she need help defending herself from a crew that might care more about what power they could harvest from her instead of her independence?]

[Even though he's an assassin, Thane seems the calmest person Elizabeth has ever known. Practically placid. And she wants to think he'll protect her from the crew if that ever became necessary.]

...do you know anything about quantum mechanics?

[ Angela's feelings on the matter are a little less paranoid, and as she said, the items function much as the echoing ripples hitting the shore, one after another. It may just take time to show up is all. Everything that has shown up were things she had already treasured and kept near her person (well, perhaps not the costume— though she did certainly still have it) and they traveled with her everywhere. A staple in her trunk, propped up in her workspace whether it be in Switzerland, America, the Middle East, or Africa.

Were he even to voice those questions, she'd have no questions. Just one day there was a box outside her door and a puppy inside. No one in the hall to have delivered it, no knock on the door, just a ding on the door lock announcing a package and there it was. ]

Some of them, yes. Many others are still missing. Some who arrived are not the same. It is as simple as that. And there are those who were not Overwatch at all who have still arrived.

Now, eat your bread and get some rest, 76. I don't imagine we'll be able to camp much longer before we move on again. You should try to recover while you have the chance.

[personal profile] ex_forcechoke292 2016-12-18 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[Anakin rolls his eyes, not feeling very brave at all. He feels emptiness, betrayal, agitation, and desperation all to varying degrees, but brave? Has he ever felt that in the wake of all that constant, numbing fear?

Fear is tangible. It's always present. Part of his makeup so much that sometimes he wonders what it's like to not worry at all. If it's not one thing, it's another in a constant rotation of considerations and reminiscences of failures.

A "unique perspective." He might as well have added "from a certain point of view," especially when Anakin knows he doesn't agree, and knows that Obi-Wan is similarly aware.]

I like my wondering to be hypothetical. [He's seen enough, been through enough, that thought experiments are not very high on his list of priorities or desires.] And look, you thought I attracted trouble? This whole universe is nothing but. How are you not just...

Tired?

Oh, Anakin...

[ The very sound of the words escaping him suggests a bone-deep tiredness. But it feels like it's been there a very long time, doesn't it? Before this universe and its trouble, before their galaxy and its war. Was he born tired, too? Did the Force bring with it an inherent exhaustion, or was it all there was to stave off something as common to life as life is common?

The older he gets, the less Obi-Wan Kenobi feels he knows. And the more he learns, the more powerless he feels.
]

It does get easier. You learn to cope. Did I not just finish telling you how adaptable we are?

[ But how he wishes he could say more, to say something that would allow his friend to rest, to not feel tired through-and-through, and to accept these current limitations without frustrating himself more than he already is. ]

Does it not make you feel closer to your wife? To know how she must live?

[It takes him a moment to respond, as he tries and fails to connect those two very different ideas.]

...I must admit, I'm not sure what a bleeding nose and quantum mechanics have in common, although I do have some passing familiarity with both. The former, more than the latter, admittedly.

[He takes a seat next to her, and settles in. Given her seemingly out-of-the-blue question, he suspects he's in for a Story.]

I've read some of the theory, but nothing really more than that.
