old but unfamiliar faces
"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

At first, this month seems no more unusual than the previous one for those who have been aboard the Moira for any amount of time. The crew who had landed on the slaver outpost were rescued, and with everyone aboard, the ship has pushed forward into the darker parts of the Runoff. Anyone arriving through the Ingress follows the same routine—moving from the Ingress room into the Medbay for their physical and contract before being assisted by seasoned crew members and helped to their assigned decks. But all familiar things must eventually come to an end: two final travelers come through the Ingress. The first, and most noticeable difference between them and all the others, is their clothing. Both are dressed in standard Moira uniforms, though they bear the insignia of one sharing the same rank as Captains Cúrre and Thán. After a moment to take in all the people on the platform ahead of them, one of the two latest arrivals approaches one of the Ingress panels and begins to manipulate the controls. The Ingress completely shuts down. Unlike before, however, there isn’t an imbalance felt across the ship; everything remains normal and stable.

Utilizing the computer systems located in the Ingress room, they send out the following message to the crew via the MID:

To all those aboard this vessel: I am Ira Phirun, assigned captain of the Moira. First Mate Egan and I will be commandeering all rights to the ship as soon as word is sent to those currently in charge. Expect a more detailed report as soon as all records and logs in Navigation have been reviewed by myself and the First Mate. All questions will be answered in a timely matter. For now, there will be no interruption of daily routine or reprimand if conduct among ranks is broken. Thanks for your time.

Heading to Navigation, the Captain and First Mate, for seemingly unknown reasons, approach Navigator Manasseh and have her show them all records and logs of the Moira. Those working in Navigation when the Captain and First Mate arrive will see Mana greet them in a professional manner. Oddly, the Captain and First Mate act very familiar with the Navigator. They review all documents, but when they come upon news that the Ploiatos is on board, their mostly friendly demeanor shifts quickly. The Captain issues a sharp order, unintelligible to those who are close enough to overhear parts of their conversation, and without any warning at all, Mana loses consciousness and collapses right there on the bridge. Within minutes of this happening, the ship as a whole falls into a low power state with basic functions only. Mana’s MID alerts Medbay, and without hesitation, Captain Cúrre places her in cryo with strict orders to those who work there not to disturb the unit.

As promised, the Captain and First Mate soon address the crew.

lights down low
The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill.

reuse & recycle
The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet.

new jobs, same faces
The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment?

You.

[Kaworu manages to curb his laughter long enough to reply--but instead of sounding mirthful, it's half declarative. And... maybe half accusatory?]

If I try to be human, you dislike me for it. But if I don't try to be human, you demand I go back to trying?

[His smile stays. But it isn't the usual easy smile most people see when they talk with Kaworu. It isn't the warm benevolent smile of understanding from the first time Kaworu met Ginko, either. It isn't even the cold, knowing smile that quite literally everybody who knows Kaworu hates so much.

It's just--well.
]

It's irrational.

I can see that, my dude.

[lúcio wasn't sure if it was rude to stare or not. he doesn't.]

Mind if I ask what it's usually like? I'd imagine there's a lot more light.

[Wow 76 homicidal tendencies are no excuse for poor listening skills~

...that's not the response he'd been expecting, though. Count the mainframe curious. And wary. But curious!]

If it's not outside my functions, sure. What do you need?

[ Shepard, birds swallow food whole. ]

Eden Prime would be correct. I was pulled from after we landed.

[ He pointedly doesn't specify further than that, instead tossing her a tray from the stack. Having already eaten, he doesn't take one for himself. ]

You're post-Cerberus?

[ McCree's just striding along, not a care in the world. Well, he does have a few cares. Such as: how to do the job he's suddenly been assigned, how he might acquire some fresh cigarillos, how it's possible there are so many familiar faces up here, and lastly--most pressing--where he can find a drink. He's thinking about all this as he navigates the corridor, relying on the mix of dim light and the soft glow of his own bionics to show him the way.

He's the perceptive kind, more so than he sees, so he doesn't run directly into Reaper, but he stops short pretty close. ]

Hey, there. You blockin' the way on purpose, or are you just lost in thought?

[ He squints at the dark shape in front of him. Human silhouette, near as he can tell. Same height. Red accents to his outfit, a pale mask. McCree feels uneasy, but he stands his ground. Something's going on here, and he means to find out what. ]

[Is this his new roommate? Rocky doesn't know her name yet but he's just going to smile and nod and go along with this snowglobe charade. And not without ENTHUSIASM!]

Tried to kill you?? WOW! Those must be some very important snowglobes! If that is, in fact, what they are and not... secret weapons of mass destruction. Wouldn't want those getting tossed in the hold!

[WINK. Okay, maybe he's taking this a little too far.]

[He winces, his breath almost catching for a moment at Kaworu's tone. He'd kind of figured that Kaworu must have been laughing at him, yeah, but that doesn't make the confirmation hurt any less. He swallows down a lump that's threatening to close up his throat.]

No, that's not-- I never disliked you. The... the things you said were... they hurt sometimes, but it didn't mean I disliked you for saying them.

But now...

[He shakes his head a little.] I know it's... it is. I know. But is this-- do you really think this is better?

[Oh. Well seeing his face scrunch up like that is part of the joy in asking. She lives for the little things. But she is nothing about amicable and leans against the wall to get a good look at him. He's determined to have a mission which she can respect. Nothing about arriving here makes any sense and it helps to have direction. Or in her case, purposefully lacking one. ]

Well. At least we're getting everything off to a pleasant start. So where to begin? Most people usually ask about the dog and the glowing ball of light which is a perfect lead into telling people I can do magic and my world is full of dragons. People love the dragon thing. They find it so unbelievable! It's so charming.

Yep.

[ Kidnapped, yes, just not by this alien.

Still, Nihlus seems to be relieved at the lack of more fighting, although he doesn't really let his guard down. ]

We're currently in transit to the next destination. If you want to safely get off the ship, it'll have to wait until then. You should visit the clinic and get yourself an Intrapersonal Device. There's information on there about what to expect while you're here.

Never saw that one. [ nope, no Twilight Zone for him, too ancient. Star Wars and Star Trek are probably in museums somewhere.

Andyr smiles fondly, at the approval of Rosie-Posie, and feels a pang of sadness, for the fact the girl attached to the name isn't here. Still stuck back home, but god, she'd love this place. The moment they're able to, Andyr will be pulling her through to see this place. ]

Me, no. Another House. I lived in a place that was sort of like a military fortress. [ a military torture fortress, but, you know, whatever. not the best lunch time topic. look at him, actually giving a shit about comfortable topics. this is maybe the most normal conversation he's had since showing up here. ]

She was 'Halina', so no, not really. My sister was 'Jehanne', though.

[ since he was. yknow. dead for all of that. ]

[Medbay.

Well, at least it's not hard to tell when new people arrive. There's a constant hustle and bustle about the doctors, and nurses tend to others who have questions or need assistance. It's a flow that is usually undisturbed and while it can be messy or unorganized, people at least know where they're going and what they're doing.

And then there's this French dude. He's definitely not new, that much is certain, but he's odd enough that he wanders around the medbay every now and then and looks at everything before he's gone again. What's even worse is if someone notices him he'll easily disappear in the small crowd that moves to and from the area. He's not hostile, but it's very apparent that Arno feels out of place whenever he comes to look at all the machines. At least right now he's not so embarrassed about being approached and asked what he's doing than he was earlier- but it's still a little humiliating to be given a job that he has rather ancient ways of tending to, and not knowing how anything else works in the future.

Muttering to himself as he looks over a respirator:]
What can this even do?

[Lights Down Low.

Far be it for him to despise the dark- he thrives in it usually. But this, when before there were no issues and they were treated with more courtesy, sits incredibly poor with him. If anything, it only reminds him of the riots in the streets of Paris, hungry people butchering merchants because the food supply was stolen by the Templars. Méricourt had been right to come to the Assassins then.

To say he's troubled by all this is an understatement, but Arno doesn't let it bother him as he walks along the halls. Luckily his Eagle Vision helps to point out where he's going- but that doesn't always stop him from bumping into people.]

Easy- [He'll try to steady whoever he's knocked into.] My apologies, it's difficult to see in this low light. You're not hurt, are you?

[Wildcard.

Tag with your own scenario if you'd like!]

[ snake. like father, like son? eli calls himself snake, too, as he recalls. after a thoughtful moment, he uncurls an arm, holding up two fingers. 'snake' isn't a problem, though. names are only accessories, really, when you're a psychic, or when speaking with a psychic, so he mimics snake's shrug a moment later.

his glance drifts down to the gun, then, sending a quick interrogative ping.

dangerous here? not as if that sort of thing is particularly upsetting to him, either, given his upbringing and where he's been since escaping the institute. even so, it's curious, especially given how relaxed many of the people here seem to be. ]

[Look at his eyes light up.]

A dragon? Sweet! Let me see. [As he shuffles a little closer.] Huh? Oh, uh, it was just kind of there and looked cool.

[ In Bruce's defense, his staring isn't quite as blatant as some other people's, nor is he blurting out seemingly random exclamations that have no place in a conversation with a complete stranger. Granted, Bruce is yet to realize who this Jim is, but even when he does, any overly expressive shows of shock and awe are highly unlikely coming from the mild-mannered and self-controlled physicist. ]

No. No, I think I'd remember meeting you. [ Jesus, would he? Bruce has always prided himself in his memory —when the Hulk didn't take it from him, anyway—, but now, he's not even sure anymore. While the man keeps talking, Bruce keeps looking at him, mostly paying attention to the conversation, but a small part of him always trying to figure out where this strange familiar feeling comes from. ]

Not much of a welcome, I know. Been there. [ As evidenced by the MID on his own wrist. ] You get used to it eventually, if that's worth anything. It used to itch a lot, when I first got it. [ Without a doubt, he prefers the MID over these new captains. ].

[ other psychics-- he parrots back, this time overlaid with his own interest and question. he even straightens a little, paying more attention to her words and her mind. the temptation is to simply take what he wants to know, because it takes too long like this, but-- but she's different, and he's never met a mind like hers, and anyway, it might take even longer to break through whatever sorts of shields she has.

he shifts on the padded bench, bare feet curling against one another, ignoring the question of hurts. he still wouldn't know what to say, and she's told him something more important, anyway.

in his own 'voice' this time, a little disjointed and faint: like me? it was incredibly rare at home, and more than that, tretij had been kept isolated for much of his stay at the institute. his contact with others like him was, at best, limited. so while he's not excited, precisely, he's certainly very intrigued and curious. ]
hyperkinesia: (Is this a code green?)

[personal profile] hyperkinesia 2016-08-05 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Funny what dire times do, in these situations. Bruce isn't even sure if he can consider himself an Avenger anymore, when everyday it becomes clearer to him that after Ultron, he no longer has a place on that team. He doesn't need to be told that much— too smart and too perceptive for his own good, and he knows himself too well. He's kept it to himself up until now, but at times like this, he feels genuinely unsure as to whether he belongs. ]

No. I don't mean— you shouldn't do that. There's no need for you to put yourself at risk.

[ It's hard to think of reasons why he even cares about that other than he wants her to be safe; luckily he doesn't try particularly hard to think of them. Hopefully she won't ask, either. ]

[ the wariness is hard to miss, for either of them. andyr may have settled with dutch not being an immediate threat, and not openly deplorable, but that hardly means he knows her. the one thing he can say for certain is she's provably dangerous, just by the job she'd had, and that's enough for andyr to be withheld with her.

and yet, he's not interested in making this a standoff, so she's given a casual shrug from where he's stopped in the hall. ]

[He shrugs, smiling, despite the saltmine dressed as a human in front of him.]

"There's probably an experiment in there. Faster than the speed of sound— something like it."

Honestly Bruce would be more impressed if Peter could travel faster than the speed of light, especially when some theories claim that's the key to time travel. But that's definitely not something he's about to pitch to Peter, just in case his recklessness might lead him to thinking that would be an excellent idea.

"Wouldn't put too much faith in that, if I were you," he chuckles, though, evidently not mad. "So how did you like Harry Potter, by the way?"
