old but unfamiliar faces
"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

At first, this month seems no more unusual than the previous one for those who have been aboard the Moira for any amount of time. The crew who had landed on the slaver outpost were rescued, and with everyone aboard, the ship has pushed forward into the darker parts of the Runoff. Anyone arriving through the Ingress follows the same routine—moving from the Ingress room into the Medbay for their physical and contract before being assisted by seasoned crew members and helped to their assigned decks. But all familiar things must eventually come to an end: two final travelers come through the Ingress. The first, and most noticeable difference between them and all the others, is their clothing. Both are dressed in standard Moira uniforms, though they bear the insignia of one sharing the same rank as Captains Cúrre and Thán. After a moment to take in all the people on the platform ahead of them, one of the two latest arrivals approaches one of the Ingress panels and begins to manipulate the controls. The Ingress completely shuts down. Unlike before, however, there isn’t an imbalance felt across the ship; everything remains normal and stable.

Utilizing the computer systems located in the Ingress room, they send out the following message to the crew via the MID:

To all those aboard this vessel: I am Ira Phirun, assigned captain of the Moira. First Mate Egan and I will be commandeering all rights to the ship as soon as word is sent to those currently in charge. Expect a more detailed report as soon as all records and logs in Navigation have been reviewed by myself and the First Mate. All questions will be answered in a timely matter. For now, there will be no interruption of daily routine or reprimand if conduct among ranks is broken. Thanks for your time.

Heading to Navigation, the Captain and First Mate, for seemingly unknown reasons, approach Navigator Manasseh and have her show them all records and logs of the Moira. Those working in Navigation when the Captain and First Mate arrive will see Mana greet them in a professional manner. Oddly, the Captain and First Mate act very familiar with the Navigator. They review all documents, but when they come upon news that the Ploiatos is on board, their mostly friendly demeanor shifts quickly. The Captain issues a sharp order, unintelligible to those who are close enough to overhear parts of their conversation, and without any warning at all, Mana loses consciousness and collapses right there on the bridge. Within minutes of this happening, the ship as a whole falls into a low power state with basic functions only. Mana’s MID alerts Medbay, and without hesitation, Captain Cúrre places her in cryo with strict orders to those who work there not to disturb the unit.

As promised, the Captain and First Mate soon address the crew.

lights down low
The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill.

reuse & recycle
The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet.

new jobs, same faces
The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment?

[ Snake can see what's happening here, that Raiden's quickly retreating from a situation that's made him uncomfortable. Just like he'd suppressed those memories, he's planning to suppress any feelings he has about this too.

But that's not going to help either of them. Not when they're out here in the middle of space and there's so few people to trust.

Well, it's not like Snake's above some firmness. ]

You know who else is here who you might know of? Liquid. Ocelot. [ He's hoping that those names mean something to Raiden, to this Raiden. ] Not people I want to trust my back with. [ There's Miller too, of course, but that's besides the point. People who Snake can really rely on here are few and far between. ]

We'll be better off working together, not ignoring each other.

What do you mean by that? Where, what happened?

[He'd heard a little of a place almost like this, a worse place, from Niko. Was it the same? Alice had apparently been there with him and it took Peter months to catch on to that.]

A lot of people here think that what people did before the ship doesn't matter anyway.

[Most people won't hound Carl about before, is what he means. Peter himself isn't sure what to think of that. He knows most of the people he stays with here had killed, multiple times and for stupid reasons. He still trusts them, but it had taken a while to get there.]

Just try to stay out of trouble, like I said. Fly under the radar and I doubt you'll need to worry about any of it.

I mean... uh, a different world from this one or home. A different dimension, where there were gods. I was there before I came here, I think. Nothing much happened there. We were just well-kept prisoners. [He was there and at home. It's all muddled in his brain still as the two timelines of home and Teleios events clash.

Anyway, he's telling the truth. As for the rest, he's not sure what to make of Peter telling him it doesn't matter. Because of course it matters. Always will. But at the same time, he isn't sure if he is just saying that to make him like he is not being judged when he is or if he truly means it. So he just shakes his head, saying what he knows.]

No. It does matter what people did before. It matters what I did. I'm just being honest about it.

[Seems like the only way to make trust, after all. He's tired of trying to hide it.]

Sure. If I can, I will.

Wow. That sucks.

[He won't pry, he knows when things are probably off limits. And sometimes, like now, he actually manages to respect that.

Peter groans at the assessment, head already shaking. A week won't work for him, not for a speedster. His sister's would know something was up if he was laid up for more than a day.]

That's not going to happen. I don't think it's even possible for it to happen. I'll just have to find a brace, I guess.

[Which still sounds awful, in his opinion. He can't imagine running would be very comfortable in a brace.]

Thanks anyway, I guess.

But then I'd owe them. [Look she likes Han well enough but she's not going to start wasting favors. She doesn't have a lot to afford to loose and still doesn't grasp the idea people might just do things for her out of kindness.] I'm already gonna owe you.

[She mutters it under her breath, more a statement to herself than something she's trying to discuss.]

Are you gonna fight 'em? [Isn't that what adults means by keeping someone occupied? Maybe someone should teach her the first response doesn't always have to be the violent one.] I actually am really good at bein' sneaky. Most people don't pay a lotta attention when it comes to someone my size.

[ So there had been Decepticons back where Milly came from? That seems odd, since Snake's only ever heard of them existing in other parts of space. With alternate universes, though, it seems like anything could be possible.

On the one hand, being able to easily replace a hand could certainly be handy. On the other hand, the fact that Milly had lost her actual flesh-and-blood hand in the first place kind of outweighs any convenience, even if she speaks about it like it's no big deal.

If it happened to her when she was really that young, then her current state probably seems normal to her. Just like monsters coming out of the ocean is normal, apparently. ]

So you're saying that your dad gave you a hand that could turn into a gun and he didn't tell you? [ Snake frowns, something not really clicking here. ] Why would he do that?
deconstruct: (Default)

[personal profile] deconstruct 2016-09-22 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. I’ll keep it in mind.

[ he isn’t a huge fan of guns, but Andyr can’t deny how useful they are. The range, the speed, the lethality. A lot more efficient than just Andyr and his fists. ]

Andyr.

[personal profile] deconstruct 2016-09-22 10:29 am (UTC)(link)
What, they don’t make actual people where you’re from?

[ asked casually, as he shovels a bit more food into his mouth, because that’s a norm for his world. He hadn’t been exaggerating when he’d said people will decide they own anything they make. Robots are just the simplest version of that. ]
deconstruct: (pic#10330097)

[personal profile] deconstruct 2016-09-22 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
The sands? Is your world all blown up or ruined or something? [ like an apocalyptic place? That must suck. As much as andyr might like to go live in the mountains by himself and be a crazy hermit for the rest of forever, he’d also like to have the choice between than and society.

He glances up from his book, considering her for a second, before shrugging. ]
Back home, I’m a prisoner. They don’t like giving nice things to prisoners.

[ hence the bitching and fit throwing, making it more of a pain to not give him something than try to do damage control. As for the aliens, he grins a bit. Maybe he’s 24, but aliens are still cool as fuck. ]

Yeah, seems like they would be. I mean, aliens, you know? Guessing you don’t come from a place where that’s normal either.
deconstruct: (Default)

[personal profile] deconstruct 2016-09-22 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
No, it does.

[ nothing makes it right. Not the people who live longer because of what they bleed out of him, not the wars that are won, not the improved lifestyle of some. Nothing, even if it saved the entire fucking world, nothing, makes it right.

But as for andyr, it’s certainly a nice break from the regular torture, but he doesn’t consider himself free of home in the least. Any second of any day, the Ingress could spaz out and shoot him back home, and he’d be right back where he’d started, only now with the sweet memories of something better to bitterly sour over.

The moira - it’s been strange. He’s not sure how to answer, wonders if tony expects him to be jumping up and down with glee over it. ]

It’s quiet. Calm. [ a kind of calm he has a difficult time trusting, or settling with. Like being taken from a scalding shower and dumped into a frigid bath. It’s a non-answer, but he isn’t sure what else to give. ] Better than vivisection.
deconstruct: (pic#10330085)

[personal profile] deconstruct 2016-09-22 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
[ A glance is cast over him, considering, before he turns to head to some of the piles of equipment, dragging out some of the heavier pieces - free standing punching bags, with heavy bottoms to keep them from toppling over, piling up some of the other mats to make stacks.

It seems more like an obstacle course than anything else. Less to show Snake anything, as that’ll apparently happen in the sims, but more because he feels a need to move. ]

So what’s your real name? [ he’s remarking while he works. ] Or is it just that you get to know mine and I don’t get to know yours?

[ which doesn’t seem fair, and yeah, he’s acting miffed about it, part because he’s a brat and part because he doesn’t trust people to begin with - even more when they’re outright withholding information. ]

[personal profile] ex_forcechoke292 2016-09-23 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Says who? I don't do favors because I expect something, that's not how favors work.

[He frowns, slightly, more concerned that she thinks she's beholden to him for something he freely offered. That's supposed to be the whole concept of freedom, isn't it? Being able to give yourself to who you like, when you like? When it's a choice? Selling a favor--something rather easily done--just feels...wrong.]

And no. You don't have to hit someone to get their attention. [He's not 12, honestly.] But they'll stay occupied, don't worry about it. No real harm, no one gets locked up for a mutiny, everything's square, right?
takeitslow: ([Side])

[personal profile] takeitslow 2016-09-24 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
This isn't your first time getting kidnapped. [None of the people from the place before had talked about gods. Only more space, a worse company to work under. He frowns.] Was this still on a ship? In space?

[It wouldn't hurt to be sure.]

Not according to the rules. Look, I think it matters for a hell of a lot too. There's people if they showed up here- [That he doesn't know what he'd let himself do. He'd probably try to choke Erik if the man came. He'd probably rethink his stance on murder if the people who'd experimented on River or Wanda showed up.]

As far as most people here care though, it doesn't matter. It's not going to get you in hot water. That's all I'm saying.
takeitslow: ([Relaxed])

[personal profile] takeitslow 2016-09-24 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Only the old fashioned way. [He drops his utensils to make a vulgar hand gesture.] It's not like making a robot. We can't just grow someone in a lab.

[Probably. But he didn't think they had the technology to make the giant robots either.]
bombsheltered: (i'm sorry...)

[personal profile] bombsheltered 2016-09-24 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I...don't know.

[ and you have just taken the express line to emotions territory, snake, sorry, there are no stops in between. milly frowns, biting her lip, and looks down at her hands folded in her lap with a small sigh. ]

I don't really understand why he does a lot of things lately. I mean, things have always been different since the accident, but... [ she fidgets with her hands now, touching a finger to the other wrist where the seams of synthetic skin are just barely visible. ] He did it to save my life. I know he did. But he also has his research, and I'm...part of his research, I guess.

[ it really doesn't feel very good to say aloud. she was hoping it'd be freeing, somehow. she turns her left hand over and stares at it. ]

He didn't like me doing the whole superhero thing to begin with. And that fight with Starscream...it was a really bad mess. And it was something of my dad's he was after in the first place. But when I asked my dad about it, he just said he was making sure I'd be better equipped to handle something like that next time. So I guess he was just...being protective.

[ yes, because most fathers express their protectiveness by installing guns in their children's hands and not telling them about it. ]
carltoaction: (pic#10323377)

[personal profile] carltoaction 2016-09-24 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
[It isn't the first time, no. He answers by shaking his head to confirm that. And then shakes it again to confirm that it wasn't on a ship.]

No. Yeah, uh, it was on earth, but not like earth. There was everything you needed: land, houses, places and things you could wish for a certain times, even your own house or pets from home, but that was it. It was kinda like we were in a box. Nothing beyond that was allowed.

[So very different from a spaceship, he means, but at the same time, almost just as limiting.

Anyway, he nods, glad that at least this guy seems to agree that it matters with what's happened before. Also he is a little surprised inwardly at how his implying that he's done bad things doesn't seem to mean much to Peter either. It provokes a thought that he may either be foolish or trustworthy going forward. Carl isn't about to decide that without getting to know him better though.]

I guess that's their decision then. I don't know if I could trust someone who lies about their past 'cause they're likely still the same. So few people I met are good anymore.

What about you? You are helping me... Why?
takeitslow: ([Joke])

[personal profile] takeitslow 2016-09-24 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. [Peter hesitates.] It's just. Some people have similar stories, you know? But most of them I've heard say they went from one part of space to another.

Sounds weird though. I mean, shit happens here and we've had a bad run for a while but at least we get to regularly see new places. It's not all the same all the time.

[Which for Peter, even being stuck on just the ship was something he could deal with as long as his sister was here.

Peter takes the nod with a rueful smile. It's not entirely foolishness, it's just that he knows it would be hypocritical to react to the news that Carl had done something bad before. Peter had spent most of his time since puberty as a thief, he let a murderer out of prison for the thrill. Not so long ago he'd thought about killing someone; even if he didn't go through with it, he couldn't pretend he wasn't capable. And then there was the matter of everyone else he knew here, the things he knew they'd done.]

Sounds like you've come from some rough places, kid.

[He snorts. Mostly, it's just that Carl is younger and Peter's always had a soft spot for kids. A big brother instinct he couldn't shake.]

We're all stuck here. We might as well try to get along, right? Besides, it really doesn't cost me anything to point out how things work around here. Actually it gives me a totally good excuse not to be working right now.

Yup. Somebody dropped a bunch of bombs way back and pretty much everythin' went boom. Except for the City, I guess. Or maybe it came after.

[She shrugs as she said it. It's not a big deal to her when it happened so long before she was born. It'd hard to miss something you never had.]

Oh. Are you an outlaw? [Maybe she shouldn't look like she finds that cool, but she does. All the best people she'd known had been criminals.] They just kept ya prisoner instead of just killin' ya right off? That's kinda weird. They just shoot 'em in the face back home. Or brainwash 'em.

[Keeping your enemy locked up sounds like a waste of supplies, honestly.]

No. If they're aliens they sure ain't tryin' to visit our planet.
kidjoy: Live version of the girl in full costume standing determined ([Firm])

[personal profile] kidjoy 2016-09-25 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Says everyone? People don't usually just help people for free. Not unless it's your people, ya know?

[She shrugs. People got by on trade, whether goods or service and she saw it as the latter. This wasn't just offering extra food in a place where supplies were plentiful, this could led to trouble. At least, in her mind. She can't detach her idea of authority from the company at home. Doing something that may anger the captains was the same to her as asking someone to anger an Exterminator.]

You're not even gonna tell me what you're gonna do, huh?

[personal profile] ex_forcechoke292 2016-09-26 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Distract.

[A nonsense conversation that diverts attention isn't always worth noting. Granted, he's no Obi-Wan when it comes to subversive tactics like this, but if it's not political, it shouldn't be too hard.

The Girl must have a video different idea of how the concept works.]

Why, what does that usually mean?
cyborged: (→Doctors looking down on me)

[personal profile] cyborged 2016-09-26 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[Besides the weird psychic arm situation, Raiden hasn't dealt with Liquid personally, and based on what he'd heard before Raiden's pretty sure that something Snake can handle. He'll be keeping an eye out, but beyond that it's nothing that changes his mind about telling Snake not to waste his time on him.]

[Ocelot though. That's an name that makes Raiden's expression darken, and his next question probably says a lot about the kind of person he's become.]

Why haven't you killed them?

[Things would be a hell of a lot simpler that way.]
arcreact: (the lavender shirt of Doneness)

[personal profile] arcreact 2016-09-26 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[ yikes.gif, Andyr. Tony's no stranger to irrational dislike or grudges, but this one is a cut above the rest. War profiteers, weapons developers, CEOs - these are people who generally earn out-the-gate ire from complete strangers. But engineers? Yeah, not so much.

He has no doubt there are reasons for it. Too bad he also doesn't give a shit. ]

Okay, so you've got a vendetta. Cute. [ Said in a way that implies there's nothing cute about it. ] But the people here? Who're stuck in the same situation as you, and are spending all their time making sure this rust bucket doesn't break down and kill us all in our sleep? Or helping to put our robot friends back together when they get blown to hell and wouldn't have a prayer otherwise? Yeah, we didn't do anything to you. So save it for the people who actually deserve it.

Right now?

[ Incredibly, he doesn't need to think on it too long or too hard. The thing tormenting him the most right now is clear and present at the front of his mind. ]

Nearly having a heart attack, taking a mandatory nap on ice for several weeks, and waking up to everybody I know being beaten to hell. Little hard to top.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say we've got some different ideas 'bout distractions.

[She snorts when she says it, a little humor returning to her face. Her ideas involved explosives, fires and decoys. Violence. It's telling of the world she's used to. But she doesn't think Anakin will be taking a match to anything anytime soon.]

What favors? Like I said, it's a debt. Something people are bound to come collect on sooner or later.

[ It might bother some people, the way that Andyr can't seem to sit still, but Snake doesn't seem to mind. He's encountered soldiers who are a lot more twitchy than Andyr. Snake, on the other hand, is solid as a rock, staying almost unnaturally still as he watches Andyr put the obstacle course together.

Strange as it might seem, it isn't that common for someone to outright ask for Snake's name like this. Meryl had done it, and so had Otacon, but that had been during an extreme situation where they'd thought their lives were at stake.

So at the question, he nods. ]
Pretty much. Sorry, kid. In my line of work you don't give out information like that to someone you've just met.

[ Maybe he'll tell Andyr eventually, but even then it's only likely to happen if Andyr continues to bother him about it. The kid can be annoyed by it, but he could have given out an alias too if he'd wanted, and Snake wouldn't have thought twice about it. ]
