old but unfamiliar faces
"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

At first, this month seems no more unusual than the previous one for those who have been aboard the Moira for any amount of time. The crew who had landed on the slaver outpost were rescued, and with everyone aboard, the ship has pushed forward into the darker parts of the Runoff. Anyone arriving through the Ingress follows the same routine—moving from the Ingress room into the Medbay for their physical and contract before being assisted by seasoned crew members and helped to their assigned decks. But all familiar things must eventually come to an end: two final travelers come through the Ingress. The first, and most noticeable difference between them and all the others, is their clothing. Both are dressed in standard Moira uniforms, though they bear the insignia of one sharing the same rank as Captains Cúrre and Thán. After a moment to take in all the people on the platform ahead of them, one of the two latest arrivals approaches one of the Ingress panels and begins to manipulate the controls. The Ingress completely shuts down. Unlike before, however, there isn’t an imbalance felt across the ship; everything remains normal and stable.

Utilizing the computer systems located in the Ingress room, they send out the following message to the crew via the MID:

To all those aboard this vessel: I am Ira Phirun, assigned captain of the Moira. First Mate Egan and I will be commandeering all rights to the ship as soon as word is sent to those currently in charge. Expect a more detailed report as soon as all records and logs in Navigation have been reviewed by myself and the First Mate. All questions will be answered in a timely matter. For now, there will be no interruption of daily routine or reprimand if conduct among ranks is broken. Thanks for your time.

Heading to Navigation, the Captain and First Mate, for seemingly unknown reasons, approach Navigator Manasseh and have her show them all records and logs of the Moira. Those working in Navigation when the Captain and First Mate arrive will see Mana greet them in a professional manner. Oddly, the Captain and First Mate act very familiar with the Navigator. They review all documents, but when they come upon news that the Ploiatos is on board, their mostly friendly demeanor shifts quickly. The Captain issues a sharp order, unintelligible to those who are close enough to overhear parts of their conversation, and without any warning at all, Mana loses consciousness and collapses right there on the bridge. Within minutes of this happening, the ship as a whole falls into a low power state with basic functions only. Mana’s MID alerts Medbay, and without hesitation, Captain Cúrre places her in cryo with strict orders to those who work there not to disturb the unit.

As promised, the Captain and First Mate soon address the crew.

lights down low
The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill.

reuse & recycle
The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet.

new jobs, same faces
The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment?

Yeah! My home's full of heroes, I'm training to be one.

[He nods as he follows Leo. Maybe it's some kind of extra sensory perception quirk? That's definitely a possibility.]

That's true. But I guess it's better to be when we're all stuck in space together.

No, it's not like that. You're Iron Man. An avenger and you guys don't always agree with the stuff we do. You didn't think we were old enough to help.

[Or how Tommy and the other Young Avengers didn't want stupid Captain America to give Teddy away just to stop a war. Tommy gets it, a little, but it's still stupid and so is Captain America. That's not Iron Man, though, but it's hard to keep them separate.]

I brought you your suit once. I was the only one fast enough to get it to you in time. [His face scrunches up.] I didn't know there were so many Avengers here. Now you'll have your team and there won't be room for any of us.

[ah, it's a pity Pandora wasn't here... Her analyzer would be much more useful in inspecting that peculiar monkey than his own radar. Though it doesn't prevent him from having something of a short staring contest with said creature...]

The door was opened. [came the smooth reply] And I don't recall hearing you complain about it earlier.

And the atmosphere has everything to do with higher technology! [he turns and grins at Leo. Amused seemed like an adequate description for Prometheus right now] Just because the technology is there doesn't mean the interior designer has to use it. Why do we have mattresses when stasis pods would serve the same function?

Because it doesn't suit the taste of the one who put the barracks together! Obviously.

[Tommy takes the time they're walking to get a good look at Billy. He's different than the Billy he knew and he kind of hates it. He spent the better part of his life without his brother. Then he gets him, and he goes off somewhere and grows up without him.

He stops moving. For a second, he knows he's misheard. It hadn't crossed his mind that Teddy wasn't around somewhere, and he was nowhere near thinking that Billy had moved on.]

But. Teddy's not here? You and Teddy aren't..?

[He turns to face Billy, hands raised in confusion, dropping them to his side. Tommy looks hurt for a moment, for a bunch of reasons, and then the expression is wiped clean. He'd always assumed Billy and Teddy would be together forever. The idea of Billy being with someone else bothers him.]

That's great. Good for you finding someone new. [His tone falls short of supportive, so he tries again.] I mean, you shouldn't be alone. Teddy wouldn't want that.

[He knew it. He's going too fast.]

I got in trouble, so they locked me up. Was always angry as a kid. Acted without thinking, but that's not important.

[Tommy doesn't like to hold hands, it's too emotional, but he reaches for Wanda's anyways.]

Billy would be so much better at this than me. [He squeezes her hand.] The Scarlet Witch and Vision decided to have kids. I think they used magic or something but all I know is she had twins. Thomas and William. They died and she found someone to help her reincarnate them. That's me and Billy. We grew up with different families and had different lives.

They found me and that's when I joined the team. Billy thought we were those kids and everything kind of happened after that. I don't know what she went through because we never really got to hang out.

[ Where anyone else may be put off by his lack of verbal expression, Angela found it familiar. Endearing. She could feel the emotion put into what words he did use and the careful way he spoke them, and it's an odd little thought to get stuck in her head when she's trying to focus on keep down the nausea and the vertigo she's simply been too busy to acknowledge.

Before she gets a chance to so much as stumble there's a sturdy hand at her back; he's quick to catch control of her before she can fall. Her laugh is about as steady as she is, stuttering and breathy and for just a split moment her head tips and one of her knees goes loose. The same moment she exhales, actually, relief at his presence clear. ]

I'm... so sorry, thank you for— oh!

[ If it'd been spinning before he really shakes her up when his hand settles at her waist and he's scooping her legs up, yet just as suddenly her stomach's settling and she's finding herself at ease. Not having to worry about her body misbehaving; the breath she'd sucked in with her surprise is held just long enough to settle, easing out of her on a sigh as she nearly goes limp in his arms.

She could do the polite thing and put up an argument. It wouldn't fool either of them, though, and really? The second she'd sat down to compose herself, she realized chances were slim she'd be able to get back up. A part of her had been resigned to catching some hours in the hallway.

She could, but her head rests against his chest and she can hear his heartbeat, steady and strong. No irritation, exertion, nervous fluttering. She relaxes further against him and you would think closing one's eyes would make one's dizziness worse, but she anchors herself instead on his heartbeat as she does exactly this. Relying in his sturdiness instead of her own. Her tone is plenty playful even if it's exhausted, voice soft. ]

Are you offering it, 'soldier'?

[ Her fingers curl in the fabric of his shirt, though, right over his sternum. She'll take a moment to steady her breathing before opening her eyes— a battle all its own just to manage halfway. ]

Thank you.

[ He's always reveled in silence, and now that he knows who he is (who he really is), he fancies that it's because some past part of him's learned how to communicate with the nonverbals, with the shifts and the heartbeats that convey so much more than idle words. Angela breathes against his collar, intermittently shallow and trying desperately to steady, and that's enough of an indication to Venom that he's made the right choice. She was in no condition to walk to her room on her own. ]

...Get some sleep.

[ No acknowledgment of her thanks, being that he never asked for it. He lingers near the wall, lets the figure curled in his arms find a spot she can get comfortable in (as comfortable as being toted around by another person can get), before he sets off down the hall at a slow, measured pace. Matching the click of his boots against linoleum with the steady one-two beat of his heart against his ribs, knowing that there's a certain rhythm that facilitates the process of winding down.

Like his namesake (the one he hasn't informed Angela of, the one she might find out about later), his bionic snakes carefully at her shoulders, coils and rests to steady her weight for minimum jostling.

For a venomous serpent, Venom Snake is hilariously mild.

"Wow. Impressive." He purses his lips as he says that, nodding and looking every bit the sarcastic little shit he's aiming to sound like. But really, it's all in good humor. "I know, I'm such a pain in the ass. Guess you'll just have to deal with it."

He does look a little more serious at that question, looking down thoughtfully for a moment. "I'm... not sure. If it were functioning normally and we had full control over it, I'm sure that the Ingress would have some system through which we'd insert specific coordinates when sending things out, or get that kind of information when receiving things. But I don't know if that's the kind of information we can access right now." He's not even sure how they sent off the Caducans through the Ingress, honestly, how they calculated a place to send them to. But he realizes now he wants to know too, if nothing else then so he can try to find some peace of mind. And Peter's right— it'd be important information to have, were a similar situation to repeat itself. "I can look into it, though. Who asked you, by the way?"

[ McCree chuckles--a warm, robust sound that makes his shoulders shake. He thumbs his belt, grinning wide. ]

You're tellin' me. Spent my time back home bringing in bad folks. Breakin' up robberies and heists and all that kind of thing.

[ He shakes his head. ]

Not to disrespect the task I been given. Folks gotta have their facilities working, and it ain't a job most people like. But I'm more used to fightin' machines that walk and talk. Not the kind that are just a buncha valves and dials.
flashbanging: cos the good lord ain't bringing me home (ain't gonna drown in the water)

[ She might be keeping herself on lockdown, but Jesse's known her a long time. He's well aware that she tends to take everything onto herself and try to just smile gently through it, that she's the kind to pick up the burdens of the whole world without a second thought, to break her back while still asking if anyone needed anything. She had a sharp tongue when she needed it, but he's keen to her essential nature--the gentlest, most generous heart he's ever known.

So there's that, and the fact that--despite appearing otherwise--he's an observant man. He notices shifts in expression, dips in tone, and all the otherwise invisible bits of body language that suggest mood, that betray a person's inner life. Angie's got practice at keeping those things in order. But he's got practice at looking for'em.

When she threads her arm through his, he pulls her close, nearly flush against his side. Just barely allowing her enough freedom for them to keep on walking (he can see the entrance to the mess hall just ahead). ]

Ain't been but a minute. Few hours, more precisely. Hell of an introduction I've had, I got to say.

[ He squeezes her arm gently. ]

Least I know you're around if that fella ever acts up again. Did he say anythin' much after you got him settled?

[ Because 76 is definitely his biggest problem on this ship. ]

"Yes, I knew it was a thing, and yes, it was a thing back home." Ratchet's voice is flat, his optics darkening, and his hands slow even if they don't stop moving. "And no, the person responsible is g--isn't here, so don't worry about it. It's nothing dangerous unless my entire spark chamber spontaneously turns to glass again, and I think at that point I'm pretty much smelted anyway so it wouldn't make that much of a difference. There."

He finishes resetting the injury and leans back again, his face utterly unreadable.

"Keep off that for a bit, and be careful not to bang it into anything, though I know what a pain that is on this ship. Was there anything else?"

[ He shakes his head. ]

Y'know, seemed like it ultimately didn't have a whole lot to do with me. I reckon we'll be fine goin' forward. Good thing, given that contract we all signed on to.

[ He leans forward a bit at the mention of a good fight--at the suggestion of a story. ]

Yeah? Tell me 'bout it, partner. All the best tales got somethin' ridiculous in'em.
soldiergenes: (and i don't wanna be a proud man)

[ Of course it's meant as a joke. It sounds like a joke. Snake doesn't often give his full codename in part because he knows how ridiculous it is, but... ]

Well, you found Solid.

[ He lets that sink in for a second. ]

There's no Gaseous, but there is a Solidus -- don't worry, he's not here.

[ And he isn't even going to get into "Naked."

Since the hallway appears to be relatively empty, Snake leans himself up against the wall and crosses his arms. ]
It's fine. The Snake name is a code name, like I told you, but it's also kind of like a title that's awarded to certain people. Liquid's my twin brother, and Venom is... a little more complicated. [ He doesn't need to be revealing the truth of that situation to someone he just met. It also isn't his story to tell. ] He's from further back in time than us, I don't really know him that well. You can kind of think of him like our... predecessor, I guess. [ There's technically no family connection between them, so he doesn't need to go into that. ]

Like a team? [More or less]

[it'd sound unbelievable to Leo's ears if he weren't involved with an underground secret society. Klaus could pass for a superhero, but the rest of them...]

Yeah, I think so. I'm hoping we can all work together.

[The monkey gazes deeply into his eyes.... Staring..... A dead-eyed stare..... right into Prometheus's eyes.]

I'm complaining now. [But now that Leo is dressed (even though he's gotten his clothes soaked by doing this, A+, Leo], he comes out of hiding, looking a little less freaked out a little more flat-faced.]

I don't think anyone who designed this had any taste at all.... [Or common sense.]

[That last bit is kind of muttered, though, he wouldn't want someone to hear him and kick him out or anything]

[Liquid lets out a quiet laugh.]

Yeah, if no one wants to be left off on some unknown planet they'd do well to not try and strangle anyone. At least no crewmembers, anyway.

[He got his frustrations out on the last battle, there, though.]

Well, apparently people on this ship previously really slighted the population of a planet. And wouldn't listen when told most of us weren't even here at the time. So they attacked.

It was a great fight, though.

There's lots of music that fits that description... orchestral arrangements and so on. I'll be sure to include some material on that, I don't know all that much about it myself aside from there's a lot of it.

[Armin nods. He's getting a little excited about doing all this research. He looks around at the blank, cool hallway.]

I wonder what people listen to nowadays.

I think my classmate knows more about that than I do. She's into rock and her entire room was filled with musical instruments.

I like soundtracks personally, but I didn't come with any.

So, your job doesn't require a uniform?

[The Survey Corps is in fact a bit lax compared to most military organizations, but it still has some kind of uniform. But Armin knows of other groups, like certain spy groups, that might simply wear whatever the situation calls for. And there are mercenaries, people who fight for their own causes or money. But someone who identifies with a cowboy in a movie...]

You must not mind standing out.

It's interesting that the room situations are co-ed. Not that it matters that much to me. [In truth he's the sort who was probably more ta risk at distraction from boys, back in training, but people mostly just minded their own business. And pretended not to hear any inappropriate behavior.]

[ Jim makes a good point. While the crew is rightfully frustrated right now, given how they're being jerked around by far too many people who supposedly have authority over them, it can't be a cake walk to these captains either. They'd disappeared for a matter of moments, only to come back to an angry crew on their hands.

With all that in mind, they've composed themselves pretty well.

Snake can see how this would be hard to grasp for someone new, so he's surprisingly patient as he continues his explanation. It comes from the experience of having to brief people for missions. ]

Some of the planets we've visited have had their own Ingress. I guess it's a technology that's pretty widespread. It'd be one thing if just the one here on the Moira was having trouble, but if all of them are malfunctioning, that speaks to a deeper problem. [ He shakes his head in dismay. ] And no one seems to know how to solve it.
