old but unfamiliar faces
"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

At first, this month seems no more unusual than the previous one for those who have been aboard the Moira for any amount of time. The crew who had landed on the slaver outpost were rescued, and with everyone aboard, the ship has pushed forward into the darker parts of the Runoff. Anyone arriving through the Ingress follows the same routine—moving from the Ingress room into the Medbay for their physical and contract before being assisted by seasoned crew members and helped to their assigned decks. But all familiar things must eventually come to an end: two final travelers come through the Ingress. The first, and most noticeable difference between them and all the others, is their clothing. Both are dressed in standard Moira uniforms, though they bear the insignia of one sharing the same rank as Captains Cúrre and Thán. After a moment to take in all the people on the platform ahead of them, one of the two latest arrivals approaches one of the Ingress panels and begins to manipulate the controls. The Ingress completely shuts down. Unlike before, however, there isn’t an imbalance felt across the ship; everything remains normal and stable.

Utilizing the computer systems located in the Ingress room, they send out the following message to the crew via the MID:

To all those aboard this vessel: I am Ira Phirun, assigned captain of the Moira. First Mate Egan and I will be commandeering all rights to the ship as soon as word is sent to those currently in charge. Expect a more detailed report as soon as all records and logs in Navigation have been reviewed by myself and the First Mate. All questions will be answered in a timely matter. For now, there will be no interruption of daily routine or reprimand if conduct among ranks is broken. Thanks for your time.

Heading to Navigation, the Captain and First Mate, for seemingly unknown reasons, approach Navigator Manasseh and have her show them all records and logs of the Moira. Those working in Navigation when the Captain and First Mate arrive will see Mana greet them in a professional manner. Oddly, the Captain and First Mate act very familiar with the Navigator. They review all documents, but when they come upon news that the Ploiatos is on board, their mostly friendly demeanor shifts quickly. The Captain issues a sharp order, unintelligible to those who are close enough to overhear parts of their conversation, and without any warning at all, Mana loses consciousness and collapses right there on the bridge. Within minutes of this happening, the ship as a whole falls into a low power state with basic functions only. Mana’s MID alerts Medbay, and without hesitation, Captain Cúrre places her in cryo with strict orders to those who work there not to disturb the unit.

As promised, the Captain and First Mate soon address the crew.

lights down low
The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill.

reuse & recycle
The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet.

new jobs, same faces
The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment?

"Heh. Wouldn't expect anything less."

And that's the truth. Sans pushes a hand over his skull, letting it rest at the back of his spine with a chuckle.

"Any specifics as to why?"

[ It doesn't take them long to reach the Moro Deck. Snake doesn't spend a lot of time here, not having any real reason to unless he's visiting someone, but all of the doors are clearly marked. He continues down the hall, looking for the number Raiden had given him.

Although he has to pause for a moment when Raiden mentions his job, glancing over his shoulder at his friend-turned-cyborg (but still friend?) with a raised eyebrow. ]

... That's what they've got you doing. Figures. I was assigned to the cargo bay for my first few months here.

Are you serious?

[Leia's gobsmacked. Of all the answers he could give her--never mind bringing up Bail Organa, that name doesn't deserve to be spoken in this context, and she's not going to acknowledge it--his answer is to compare her to Darth Vader? He has the nerve to suggest her anger is the same as galaxy-destroying violence?

He hasn't learned anything from what she's said to him--nothing! nothing at all--except who she blames for the horrors she's seen. It certainly hasn't sunk in why, if this outburst is any indication.]

I've never approved of genocide, for one! When you want the rest, you know where to find me.

[In the meantime, she's not going to follow him out. She's not using his damned water. Leia going to take the coldest shower she can, and then she's going down to the cargo bay and locking up in the heart of a ship Anakin Skywalker has no access to.]

[ Habit is the likeliest and most plausible answer. Bruce has lived over forty times longer than Vision has, for one, that's a lot of time to grow and get used to one's own body and movements. When Bruce was a year old he also lacked severely in grace, as well as balance, coordination, what have you. One grows and learns, though.

Bruce smiles when Vision mentions his job assignment, but he doesn't find it especially amusing. Instead, he just shrugs and offers simply. ]

You're not a robot. [ Honestly, that's far too simple a way for Vision to describe himself. ] Somehow I have no doubt that you'll find your own way to do this job better than a lot of other people on board could.

"I went with her! Once." And a few times after to search out Billy or Lizzie or whomever he was having trouble finding elsewhere. "You know, even Sans doesn't get on me so much about learning and he's supposed to be giving me an education."

He hesitates a moment, sighing. "We wondered if there was anyway to track what where the Ingress sends people. Like what did it do to the people that attacked the ship. And after what happened at the outpost-" Peter stops, gaze darting away. "If there was someway to find out where people got sent, maybe it wouldn't have taken so long for some people to get rescued. I don't know if that's even something you can look into but, well, I told her I'd ask."

[Raiden's counting the numbers off in his head as they walk, as if he really needs to memorise the order instead of just knowing his numbers. It's something easy to focus on instead of the conversation he knows is coming and desperately doesn't want to have.]

[He slips past Snake when he spots the room, opening the door and casting a hesitant glance inside to see if anyone's there.]

Maybe they thought you'd feel at home with all the boxes.

[Look at that, he made a joke! It's almost like he's a real person or something.]

[He snorts but lets it go. The kid will see soon enough. It took Peter enough time to deal with it, after all.]

Carl. [He smiles, holds out his hand. He can't actually remember if he'd gotten to names the last time, which might make it a small relief if this kid couldn't remember him. Or if this was just another twin. Whichever.] Well if this is your first time around here, welcome to space little dude.

Near as I can tell, we only know each other from our wanted posters. He was just twitchy, I guess.

[ He shrugs. Though he knows his attacker very well, he's not presently aware of that fact. To him, 76 is just another outlaw with a bad attitude. ]

Ain't had me a vacation in quite some time. I surely wouldn't say no to one now, but I got to admit I'm more used to a fight. Y'all see much combat on this trip?

[personal profile] takeitslow 2016-08-17 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"No! That's not-no." He tugs at his hair, trying to keep his frustration under control. "I don't want in on other people's business, geez I'm not some creep."

Honestly, if he really needed to know something personal about someone Peter knew plenty of psychics. No need to go through the ship's systems.

"No one should be looking at any of it. Not me, or someone in the mess or you or anybody. It's bad enough the captains can watch everything we do but regular crew shouldn't be allowed to either! It's a pretty massive breech of our privacy! And we don't get much of that as it is."

[ He raps against the metal with his knuckles; hears a few things rattling. ]

That's real good to know, 'cause I know this thing's due for maintenance some time soon. And I ain't no mechanic.

"A skeleton...?"

His eye widens a little, looking more closely at Sans. Yes, he does sort of look skeletal. Maybe it's an alien race. That would make sense.

"I have just arrived, ja." A quick shake of that small hand before politely letting it go.

It's definitely a change.

[The mainframe's not quite so optimistic on their chances, but he'll back Rocky's play. And as long as Peter's bothering to glance his way, he might as well assume he's meant to be included. Or at least, that Peter would rather not be wondering whether he's listening in.]

You sound like you're speaking from experience, though.

[Not to mention that they...?]

[A short pause.]

We were, but the war ended twelve years ago in my world. We endured a few catastrophes before I came here. But what would either of those things have to do with my Guild? It is a very old organization.

Risa? [ Said partly like he knows the word, partly like he's asking about it. Yet another pluck at the strings of his memory, and now this all doesn't look so much as a coincidence to him anymore. So excuse him while he pays a little more attention to whatever Jim says as he tries to put the pieces together. ]

Oh, it's... we've ran into a number of things that are out to kill us, actually. So consider that a warning of sorts.

[ Can't be too careful here. Although if this guy has traveled across his universe too, then he might be more prepared for it than most. ]

That's exactly what I thought!

[After so long of everyone acting like the incident was nothing, of even Rinzler telling him it's not what really happened, it's validating that someone agrees with him. Even if Peter no longer plans to do something about it.]

If he did, he never said anything. [Possibly because he rarely spoke, but Rinzler still had never indicated that he knew Peter from anywhere before.] But with how insane this place is, who knows? I've already meet people from all over the timeline of my own universe let alone- [He gestures at her.]

If that was the issue he could at least say it! It would have been easier to deal with.

"Well, I'm not a big fan of the rules. The ration system? Not exactly great for someone with a fast metabolism."

He laughs humorlessly, eyeing the pile of junk. It doesn't take but a second for the serious look to return to his face.

"It just doesn't make a lot of sense if you ask me. These guys show up out of no where and just get to take over? And the others just let them. Then there was whatever happened with that one lady, just passing out and putting her in the tube? I don't know, it just feels fishy."

"It doesn't surprise me that the days run together." Being on a space ship and all. There isn't a sunrise or sunset anymore. Kind of unnerving, but Venom's never had much of a regular sleep schedule.

"It's different, to say the least. Never been out in space, much less living on a ship like this. I'm still learning my way around."

Didn't do nothin' except exist in his general vicinity. He came out swingin' at whatever was in front of him. Bad day, I guess.

[ His eyes widen slightly as she wraps herself up in his serape, and then he laughs. When he was young, her smile used to devastate him. He stays on her heels, thinking to himself that it's still got him pretty weak-kneed. But, unlike back then, he's still able to walk. ]

[Likewise on letting it go. He does briefly frown at the corners due to the snort directed his way though. However, a faint upwards tug takes its place with hearing the welcome right after. Don't get him wrong he's not pleased about being here, but it is nice to have someone try to make it better.

Sorry if he hesitantly looks at the hand proffered to him rather than taking it, though. He's still getting his bearings here.]

Yeah, it is. Thanks...I guess. There is other stuff to do than stare at walls and space though, right?

Well hidden indeed, because Liquid hadn't even considered the fact that there'd be something hidden under the top layer of unpleasantness. Not that he's never eaten anything out of a garbage can before, of course. Sometimes you take what you can get. "Quite the operation you've got here," he says, voice low, glancing up. Damn, now that's subversive.

And as someone who eats a lot (sure, he likes food, but those workouts take a lot of fuel too), he definitely takes the loaf from him.

"Much appreciated. And how much is the next, once you've brought out my addiction?"

I see. That makes a little more sense, even if it was unfortunate. [ A pause, and then: ] He was growling at the techs in medbay. By the time I got ahold of him, though, he'd calmed down significantly.

[ It's easier to tease, hiding the weight in her heart with his appearance and wanting so badly to know just what his life has been like in the interim. How far they've gone— yet his easy touch and easier words and the way he'd scooped her up had immediately set any darker assumptions to rest.

Jesse was still a good man. That is all that she needed to know for now. His laugh keeps her grounded even as his voice has roughened as time has gone by, and she'll be slipping an arm through his. ]

How long have you been here?

That's gonna be an issue, 'cause I ain't got much to my name at present.

[ What with most things being done by credits these days, and his cash not on his person, either. Also, he expects, probably no good on this ship regardless. He sighs--at the situation, not her--as he draws Peacekeeper from its holster. ]

Naw. Good old-fashioned bullets, accurate as anythin'.

[ He taps his belt, strung with spares. But, hold on a tic. ]

So, sneaking, huh? That your job where you from?

[ And what do bobby pins got to do with it? ]

[ McCree takes the continued non-aggression as a sign to press forward. He lets his own tension settle, shuts the door behind him, and walks 'til he's right beside his new roommate. ]

Rewritin' genetic code, huh. We got tech like that, stuff that works on you on such a level. I ain't too familiar with it, though.

[ He lifts the brim of his hat, squinting at this fella. ]

I'm not the kind to pry into another man's history if he don't wanna speak of it. Just try not to electrocute me in my sleep and we're gonna be fine.
