old but unfamiliar faces
"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

At first, this month seems no more unusual than the previous one for those who have been aboard the Moira for any amount of time. The crew who had landed on the slaver outpost were rescued, and with everyone aboard, the ship has pushed forward into the darker parts of the Runoff. Anyone arriving through the Ingress follows the same routine—moving from the Ingress room into the Medbay for their physical and contract before being assisted by seasoned crew members and helped to their assigned decks. But all familiar things must eventually come to an end: two final travelers come through the Ingress. The first, and most noticeable difference between them and all the others, is their clothing. Both are dressed in standard Moira uniforms, though they bear the insignia of one sharing the same rank as Captains Cúrre and Thán. After a moment to take in all the people on the platform ahead of them, one of the two latest arrivals approaches one of the Ingress panels and begins to manipulate the controls. The Ingress completely shuts down. Unlike before, however, there isn’t an imbalance felt across the ship; everything remains normal and stable.

Utilizing the computer systems located in the Ingress room, they send out the following message to the crew via the MID:

To all those aboard this vessel: I am Ira Phirun, assigned captain of the Moira. First Mate Egan and I will be commandeering all rights to the ship as soon as word is sent to those currently in charge. Expect a more detailed report as soon as all records and logs in Navigation have been reviewed by myself and the First Mate. All questions will be answered in a timely matter. For now, there will be no interruption of daily routine or reprimand if conduct among ranks is broken. Thanks for your time.

Heading to Navigation, the Captain and First Mate, for seemingly unknown reasons, approach Navigator Manasseh and have her show them all records and logs of the Moira. Those working in Navigation when the Captain and First Mate arrive will see Mana greet them in a professional manner. Oddly, the Captain and First Mate act very familiar with the Navigator. They review all documents, but when they come upon news that the Ploiatos is on board, their mostly friendly demeanor shifts quickly. The Captain issues a sharp order, unintelligible to those who are close enough to overhear parts of their conversation, and without any warning at all, Mana loses consciousness and collapses right there on the bridge. Within minutes of this happening, the ship as a whole falls into a low power state with basic functions only. Mana’s MID alerts Medbay, and without hesitation, Captain Cúrre places her in cryo with strict orders to those who work there not to disturb the unit.

As promised, the Captain and First Mate soon address the crew.

lights down low
The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill.

reuse & recycle
The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet.

new jobs, same faces
The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment?

[The rifle does its job. He stumbles slightly with the force of the blast, snarling in pain and frustration as it burns through armor and catsuit. When he collides with 76, it is clear that the damage isn't simply superficial as is body smokes angry black between them.

He is off-balance when they begin to struggle against one another. The lack of gun means he has to sacrifice his grip if he wants to punch 76 in the face.

And that's exactly what he does, dropping his left hand and aiming to clock the other man right in the jaw.]

Right. Yeah, sorry. I just---course he is. You know, I didn't get either of your names, come to mention it.

[ Jim loves dogs. He always wanted one growing up, but he never could. He always figured he'd get a big one, like a Great Dane or something. Man, that'd be cool. ]

Interesting. We don't have a lot of anything like that where I'm from. Your dragons sound charming, though.

[ Hey, gotta take things as they come, right? Doesn't mean you have to have a terrible attitude about it, though. ]

It's a large, humanoid, mostly bipedal lizard, I guess. That's probably the best way to put it, but ---alien.

[ Jim is rapidly learning as much. She's not too hard for him to keep up with, though. He's used to Chekov, and that kid exemplifies the idea of moving at light speed with how he thinks, acts, and does virtually everything in life.

But Darcy is very, very different. He doesn't have a good train of thought to catch onto and get her to slow down and back up and explain herself so he can follow along properly. He's good, but she's pushing how good he is at that. So, Jim is just going to opt for not talking until she sorts herself out, which she does eventually.

When that happens, he can't help a soft, amused laugh. ]
That was quite a welcome. Nice to meet you, Darcy.

Are you ok?

[Ginko is pretty practiced at making his way around the library without getting distracted by the patrons... for the most part, anyway. He'll respond if they greet him, but for the most part, he stays focused on his work. Or, perhaps more accurately, gets lost in it.

Every so often, though, he will get distracted by something odd... like a boy he only vaguely knows sitting around with a knife on his knee. The question of why he even has that distracts him just long enough to kind of bump into the edge of a bookcase, giving a startled squeak as a few of the books in his arms tumble to the ground. He hurriedly crouches down to gather them back up, silently hoping that Ralph somehow didn't notice that.]

[ Angela watches him reach into his pocket and the subsequent working of his jaw and twitch of his lips reminds her all too well of Jesse's habits and her nose wrinkles with a little grin. Come to think of it, had he even arrived with his cigarillos? ]

Do you smoke?

[ Electronic cigarettes were easy things to make; she could fashion some up in a few hours if the materials were readily accessible. The trickier part would just be the flavoring, she supposes, but synthetics were easy enough to create. She'd just have to trawl back through the years and remember how to go about it. They couldn't be the only two on the ship, and sometimes smoking was less about the nicotine and more about the act itself. ]

Sounds like your comrades are the troublemakers instead. [ BELIEVE U ME, SHE KNOWS THE TYPE. It's all right, her feelings won't be too hurt. ] Mm, I was in the Ingress room for a few hours helping those who were arriving. Then one man came through that was beyond my abilities there in the room, so I finally left with him to get him treated. The second they released me, I was pulling on my coat.

[ The mere mention of it draws a yawn from her; it'd been well over twelve hours ago simply for the medbay portion of that adventure. A few hours before that, and she'd been in the middle of her day when she was pulled here— those sorts of runs may not be unheard of, but it's certainly catching up to her in her "old" age. Nevermind that lightheadedness bordering on dizzying nausea she's been keeping at bay. ]

Earth is about the latest point in the timeline so far.

If you're sure. [ It doesn't look super appealing, but food is food when the chips are down and there isn't a lot else to spare, if anything. ]

Have they? There still doesn't seem to be an awful lot of trust in the way things are being run. [ Lies can have truth. He learned that a hard way before. Marcus used that sort of thing against him after Pike's death, when he sent Jim after Khan in the hopes of starting a war. He's not unfamiliar. ] It doesn't sound like an easy ride for anyone, those in command or otherwise.

[ Hell, Jim isn't sure what he'd do if people from random places just started suddenly showing up on the Enterprise. ]

I got that part, about the Ingress and its technology being the way back, but what do you mean it isn't just here? [ If it isn't just here, what was the point of shutting down the one on board the Moira. Snake is right, it doesn't have a good feeling attached to it when he says it like that. ]

[personal profile] caelus 2016-08-17 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
That's quite a while. I'm sure you've seen a few changes over that course of time, or at least gotten a feel for how things are being run. [ Which he is very curious to know about, by the way. ]

It'd be a little weird if I just sat on my hands. I'm used to my own ship, but I've never been one to keep still for too long, and somebody has to mind the store, right? [ Jim can definitely appreciate the hands-on approach. He didn't learn every nook and cranny in his own ship, and learn about his crew by just reading tech manuals and reports. He learned it by getting out there and doing. ]

[ 'Sa-ni-ta-tion'. McCree's enunciation is something someone can get lost in— the kind of voice that sounds convincing even if all it's doing is reciting addresses from a phonebook. That's an advantage, Venom supposes.

If McCree sounds like a gentle sidewinder, Venom's a lone tumbleweed. Listen to how exhilarating he is:

I'm a lucky guy, what can I say?

[ It is a little oversimplifying, but considering his day, Jim can use a bit of that in his life. Jim gets a kick out of Mettaton, and definitely hopes this isn't the last time they run into each other. He'd like to get to know him in a less stressful setting for sure. ]

Gonna make me work for it right off the bat, huh? Yeah, sure, hit me. I can handle it.

[ He read it as a joke, but it is also a good way to get a feel for how Mettaton is doing here as well. So what if there's a bit of mutual flirting. ]

There's probably more to it than that. Mere speculation will probably not be very revealing, however. [He shrugs] There'll doubtless be plenty of time for that, regardless, though.

[He tilts his head and responds with a small smile to that subject change.]

An auspicious posting. I've been assigned to maintain the ventilation ducts.

[Which he's perfectly content with. He has no real marketable job skills other than "killing people", but the work he's been assigned will doubtless make it that much easier to move quickly around the ship, and provide a nice cover besides.]

[ The other guy's move from one circuit to another not only sends him back, but Jim pulls his hands back briefly as well, actually laughing a bit. Especially at that rueful look thrown his way.

He's had plenty worse, no worries. ]

Neither am I. I usually leave the Engineering to my Chief, Scotty. [ He reflexively checks the MID, even though he's still getting used to it, and is glad it isn't glitching or anything. That's good. ] Jedi Order? Never heard of it. Peacekeeping I'm a little familiar with---

I'll try not to. [ Jim takes the offered hand, and gives it a firm shake. ] Nice to meet you.

[ She very much has every right to be. He understands Sulu's love for the small hydroponics garden they have in one of the labs. He can't go in there very often, but he does stop in when there isn't anything that is going to send him to medical. ]

Picked up is a nice way of putting it. [ Usually he wouldn't, but---well. Fine, ok. He takes one, and offers a grin. ]

Thank you. I wouldn't mind seeing that garden sometime if you didn't mind showing me. We have a small one on my ship back home, but I haven't seen anything bigger than that in a while.

[ Jim might end up a little startled in the end, but he wouldn't judge her about her abilities. While his first personal experience with such things wasn't the best, it wasn't exactly commonplace. And this ship is full of amazing people with equally amazing abilities, he's finding out.

Jim Kirk is a No Judgement Zone here. ]

Mess hall? [ He quirks a grin, and jerks his thumb back down the last passageway he'd come from. ] I think its back that way, but trust me I've gotten myself turned around more times than I care to admit today.

How about we go find it, get you something?

[ Yes, do fill Venom in on how clones replaced nukes, because that future sounds far more horrifying than bipedal robots running amok— at the very least, machines are depersonalized, no matter what sort of AI they decide to equip them with (the Mammal Pod comes to mind). Twice removed from a human counterpart, there's no guilt in trashing a machine with a heart made of wires, no matter how deceptive the artifice, but can the same thing be said about clones?

He recalls an operation done in secret in his own world, "Les Enfants Terribles". How ironic that the children were never the terrible ones— only the man who decided that they should exist.
]

...So they've developed humans as a deterrent instead of nukes.

[ He says that with a tinge of disbelief, as if a man who's been shaped by conflict could ever be surprised about something like this anymore. Let's be real, none of this sounds particularly good (restricted zones??? jesus). What a bitter pill to swallow, the folly of humanity. ]

'KN gene'?

[As if the 'literally materializing behind him' thing wasn't indication enough of some kind of vaguely supernatural element to all this, the smoking catches him off-guard. He wants to ask what happened--how he ended up this way and if (given all the things he's heard) Gabriel is even human anymore, but those are questions better asked by someone long-dead.

So, they won't get asked at all. 76 can only focus on the fact that the barrage of pulse fire hasn't stopped Reaper, and that he's going to need to think fast before he loses the upper hand.

He takes the punch and staggers backward, because Reaper is still impossibly fast and just as strong as he remembers, but he's newly emboldened by scoring those hits. 76 is quick to recover this time, swinging a wild punch of his own even as he sees double. If he misses, he'll just follow through again, trying to take away any chance Reaper might have to recover.

It's brutal, unhinged. Feral. He doesn't seem to care about leaving himself open. All he wants is the feeling of impact.

[ There's a beat before he answers that first question, because he doesn't expect it to go over very well with someone in the medical profession. But then again, even doctors may have their vices. ]

When I can afford to.

[ Crouched in a foxhole, making sure that no one can see the dim light of his cigar, or back at base where he could indulge in long, soulful smokes while staring out at sea. Small luxuries for a soldier, to have that private moment.

Speaking of having a moment, though. That yawn doesn't go unnoticed, a punctuation to a confession that she's been working since she's arrived. Note to self: this 'Angela' is a literal bleeding heart.

[ The distinction of a doctor in a worldwide military force would likely clarify that for him; better still to say that she had a suit of armor that gave her some limited flight capabilities. The slow stretches and holds helped keep her limber, important when you're twisting through the air and trying to support another person's weight while doing so. It may not be a common occurrence here, but it had been back home. Helping women and children down from buildings on fire, in danger of a quick collapse because of nearby bombings vibrating the ground itself, etc. Another twenty seconds and she finishes her round as he's toweling off his face, resuming a casual seat on her mat with a straight back to look back over at him. ]

[ Angela had gone through the "stop smoking" song and dance before; if someone his age were still smoking, they knew the risks. They took them anyway. It isn't her place to lecture someone on their lifestyles. Simple oral distractions were an easy way to relax, giving the mouth something to contemplate, something that filled the senses. She understood completely.

There's got to be some kind of extra points for showing off to a spaceship captain. On a spaceship.

Back where I come from, we have a series of fruit, herb, and vegetable gardens. They were planted by my ancestors going back about...I guess ten generations.

The captains here originally had me working as a field medic.
