old but unfamiliar faces
"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

At first, this month seems no more unusual than the previous one for those who have been aboard the Moira for any amount of time. The crew who had landed on the slaver outpost were rescued, and with everyone aboard, the ship has pushed forward into the darker parts of the Runoff. Anyone arriving through the Ingress follows the same routine—moving from the Ingress room into the Medbay for their physical and contract before being assisted by seasoned crew members and helped to their assigned decks. But all familiar things must eventually come to an end: two final travelers come through the Ingress. The first, and most noticeable difference between them and all the others, is their clothing. Both are dressed in standard Moira uniforms, though they bear the insignia of one sharing the same rank as Captains Cúrre and Thán. After a moment to take in all the people on the platform ahead of them, one of the two latest arrivals approaches one of the Ingress panels and begins to manipulate the controls. The Ingress completely shuts down. Unlike before, however, there isn’t an imbalance felt across the ship; everything remains normal and stable.

Utilizing the computer systems located in the Ingress room, they send out the following message to the crew via the MID:

To all those aboard this vessel: I am Ira Phirun, assigned captain of the Moira. First Mate Egan and I will be commandeering all rights to the ship as soon as word is sent to those currently in charge. Expect a more detailed report as soon as all records and logs in Navigation have been reviewed by myself and the First Mate. All questions will be answered in a timely matter. For now, there will be no interruption of daily routine or reprimand if conduct among ranks is broken. Thanks for your time.

Heading to Navigation, the Captain and First Mate, for seemingly unknown reasons, approach Navigator Manasseh and have her show them all records and logs of the Moira. Those working in Navigation when the Captain and First Mate arrive will see Mana greet them in a professional manner. Oddly, the Captain and First Mate act very familiar with the Navigator. They review all documents, but when they come upon news that the Ploiatos is on board, their mostly friendly demeanor shifts quickly. The Captain issues a sharp order, unintelligible to those who are close enough to overhear parts of their conversation, and without any warning at all, Mana loses consciousness and collapses right there on the bridge. Within minutes of this happening, the ship as a whole falls into a low power state with basic functions only. Mana’s MID alerts Medbay, and without hesitation, Captain Cúrre places her in cryo with strict orders to those who work there not to disturb the unit.

As promised, the Captain and First Mate soon address the crew.

lights down low
The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill.

reuse & recycle
The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet.

new jobs, same faces
The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment?

[She has often questioned, within her own mind, the necessity that the Order places upon Jedi. Even now, in this moment, she knows that love is no weakness. Whoever or whatever is behind this has provided, in a sense, that second chance that she would otherwise not have been granted. And here, as she is understanding, there need be no deception to who they are and who they can be.

Padmé has always had that stubborn streak and has always stood by her beliefs even if others questioned them. Her instincts have often taken her down the correct path, and while sometimes there might be hindrances in the way, she has come to trust them, as she did with Dooku, as she did with her faith in Anakin. She can be there, not behind closed doors in the privacy of the residence, but in public, to offer what need be offered, whether support or a soft reminder. Anything, and everything.

She breathes him in, body, mind and soul, and oh. Yes, there is a small laugh at that. There he is again, the man she wed and loved, with that charisma that draws eyes to him, who people seem drawn to, to simply be within the same vicinity as he. There is a delicate squeeze given upon his arm, the corner of her own lips twisting ever so teasingly up. Small steps. One at a time. But always forward, she promises herself, and while there may be times when a pause is required, never backwards.]

Oh, you're definitely special.

[She meanders over to the mat. And if her hips swish a little bit as she goes, well. So be it.

Fatima steps out of her heels, neatly lining them up against the wall before she pirouettes onto the mat and immediately falls into downward facing dog.]

I notice clothing. It's my thing.

Well, one of my things.

[She sweeps up into cobra, tilting her head up, forming a graceful line through her chest all the way to the tip of her chin.]

[He has the strangest sensation when he hears that--something warm and tight wells in his chest and suddenly he is laughing without meaning to. He has to lower his head to keep from laughing in Darcy's face. It's just for a moment, before he stops and puts a hand to his chest. He's never done that before. How odd.]

My apologies. It's only...I did not know that story. [Even if he had spent more time with Thor, he doubts that is a tale the god would tell.] It may be the most absurd thing I've ever heard.

[And I live with a group super-powered humans with egos as overblown as their abilities, and the communications skills of a bunch of children. He thinks this. He almost says it. He doesn't.]

Do you--would you happen to have more stories like that? [He's genuinely curious. He has been a part of so few happy moments with any of the Avengers, he's eager hear from someone who knows at least one of them in a different light. And if speaking to him happens to get Darcy out of whatever place she was in when he found her, then that is a bonus.]

[ Don't be so suspicious! She's already told him she's new too, goodness. She's aware of him observing her but she doesn't mind it, certain most people here are all doing that exact thing. She's been doing her fair share of observations herself. Half the reason she's as exhausted as she is, the effects of the Ingress arrival still lingering in her system, on the backburner as she'd shoved them away.

With his... teasing? She's sure he's teasing, she can't help the tired way she smiles. ]

Fishing for justification? I might be, at the rate they've been going at it.

[ That turn of his words is obvious and her smile softens with it, listening to him closely as she watches him from her knees. Sometimes "real" family isn't all its cracked up to be and you have to make your own. She gets the impression he may have done so even unintentionally. ]

I'm glad you have some who are close to you here, then. [ No one deserved to be this far from home alone. ] You certainly don't seem like a troublemaker to me. Shall I write them all a prescription for 300mg of patience to be taken daily?

The faster newcomers learn where they are and how things work, the faster... well, arriving on a deep-space vessel in another universe will always be a shock, but that's all the more reason to help them adjust, if they're willing to try. This one is incredibly calm for her first day on the job, though there's an inward tension at first that Bel senses more than sees. She's open-minded and practical, and there's kindness in her smile. All good signs.

The terminology, though, is food for thought. Bel has heard function used in this context before, falling just as naturally from inhuman lips -- or typed raggedly by a being without a voice. The light at the woman's wrists is a gentler glow than Tron's sharp blue-white. But programs aren't the only ones who wear circuits back in their world.

In the meantime, it's easy enough to answer her. "I was, until the new captain showed up. Looks like they're moving some positions up to the Tower instead." Catching the flick of her eyes, Bel glances down at the uniform and grins. "That'd make everyone's stripes obsolete. I'm Bel Thorne, by the way. Of a rank that makes as little sense as the stripes, back where I come from."

As you like.

[ She even makes a point of letting one long ribbon of hair wrap across her eyes to emphasize: "no peeking". Even though once she turns around, it would be easy to let the curtain of her hair obscure whether or not she turns back around again. But Medusa is a woman of her word, when she can afford to be— so despite the loss of the view, she makes a point of letting the majority of her hair curl and cascade over her shoulders as she turns her back to him. ]

Bumblebee. That is a unique name. [Though he supposes his name is not exactly average.]

If I may ask--there must be a reason you would choose to use this projected image to walk around the ship. [There are any number of possibilities, most of which are relatable to him. Since arriving here, he has thought once or twice of synthesizing a skin of some kind over his own form, so as to draw less attention to himself when meeting new people.]

Do you--[He hesitates. Is it rude to ask this? He has never had cause to ask this of anyone before.]-- do you have a physical form?

[Vision tilts his head at the spot clearly left for him on the blanket, still for just a moment before he moves to sit down. He lowers his density slightly to make the motion less awkward. Vaguely, he wonders how humans often move so gracefully through odd moments like this, when they only have their normal bodies and constant masses to work with.]

I have been adjusting fairly well, I suppose, though I have no frame of reference. I think I might enjoy it more when I start my new employment. They made me a fine arts instructor, which I suspect many people would find amusing.

[He rests his hands in his lap and looks out at the stars around them, still trying, in the back of his mind, to figure out where they might be. On the surface, he smiles in a way he hopes is wry.]

After all, what does a robot know about art?

[Tarn is just staring down at Newt. He doesn’t know how to address this. He hadn’t expected this human to be so familiar with the Decepticons. Could he have been involved in the incident that Rodimus had mentioned to him during their captivity? When the humans had kidnapped cybertronians to lock them into their alt modes as slaves?

He instantly becomes suspicious, backing away from Newt. Like pit is he letting himself be mode locked for this human’s amusement.]

[At some point, she needs to learn just to say I love him and let it rest there. In the meantime, he can suffer being a friend--it's not like Padmé won't see the truth if she meets him.

She can't, exactly, bring herself to refer to Father and Mother as such in front of Padmé. It seems cruel, somehow, as if she's rubbing in the fact that the woman who gave birth to her couldn't see her grow up. Though she gives Padmé a nod, she thinks privately that it might be easiest to avoid the subject for now.

Besides, there are so many other things to talk about.]

You can see how convenient it was. [What years those were--exhilarating, frightening, without the certainty she has now. She was safer then, in some ways, but she was also constantly in danger of being found out as a traitor to the Empire.

There's a sort of comfort, comparatively, in being a known rebel. While it still involves sneaking around sometimes, she doesn't have to lie about who she is on a daily basis.]
The Empire did, too. But it was a good place to start--and now we're doing greater things. I really think we have a chance.

[Some days, her hope is stronger than others, but overall, they've been succeeding. They have to win this fight--she's sure of it.] But I'll have to get home if I'm going to see it, and they're awfully coy about their ETAs here.

[Vision takes a long, slow breath. He doesn't need to. His systems don't require oxygen to function, but he does it anyway because he needs that time to think. There doesn't appear to be any immediate way make this right and it irks him. That is the problem with people. They are not machines, they do not malfunction when you do something wrong. Instead they get hurt and they are not something you can just fix by knowing how they are put together.

He knows he is not really very different than them, when one looks past all his synthetic components, but it doesn't mean he knows what to do.

He stays silent until Pietro speaks again and it's only his mention of Wanda that compells Vision to say something.]

Please, I wouldn't blame Wanda. I cannot imagine what it must have been like for her. Perhaps she simply couldn't bare to tell you. To say the words.

They shut the Ingress off?

[That's kind of worrying. Are they giving up on fixing it, then, or is it just a temporary measure, like he... hopes the lights and everything are.]

I... guess it does probably use a lot of power. Maybe they'll turn it back on eventually.

[He kind of hopes so, if only for some of his friends' sake.]

I'll keep that in mind.

True enough. It is uncomfortable to be confronted with the reality of exactly how much we are affected by the actions of others, either for good or for ill.

[Though it worked out quite comfortably for the drell. Or, at least, for the 375,000 who'd been lucky enough to be evacuated from their dying home world. So for a tiny minority of the drell, it had worked out.

Well, nothing's perfect.]

[ She's tired, he's tired, and the common denominator is that the only thing they're allowed to do is weather through it, like individual outposts all gathered together to form a makeshift island. It's nothing glamorous or fulfilling, nothing that can be ascribed to a higher purpose beyond surviving and getting back to their usual daily grind, but it's something.

He tips forward away from the wall, releasing his tied-up hair from its uncomfortable position where it'd been mashed against smooth chrome-white. One elbow settled on a knee, he reaches for a pocket with his flesh-and-blood hand...

...and looks vaguely perturbed when he remembers that he'll come up empty. Right, the ship confiscated his electronic cigar.

His jaw works in vague annoyance. She might recognize it as a quirk of a habitual smoker, the way his lips twitch and move at their corners as if he misses the weight of a cigar-shaped object between his teeth.

None of them will take it. Even if it's Doctor's Orders. [ Especially if it's prescribed patience. ] Better off saving your energy.

I don't imagine anyone who is feeling steady on their feet right now with what is going on. [ Jim's eyebrows raise a little towards his hair. ] I'm not so sure everyone would agree, but to each their own.
