old but unfamiliar faces
"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

At first, this month seems no more unusual than the previous one for those who have been aboard the Moira for any amount of time. The crew who had landed on the slaver outpost were rescued, and with everyone aboard, the ship has pushed forward into the darker parts of the Runoff. Anyone arriving through the Ingress follows the same routine—moving from the Ingress room into the Medbay for their physical and contract before being assisted by seasoned crew members and helped to their assigned decks. But all familiar things must eventually come to an end: two final travelers come through the Ingress. The first, and most noticeable difference between them and all the others, is their clothing. Both are dressed in standard Moira uniforms, though they bear the insignia of one sharing the same rank as Captains Cúrre and Thán. After a moment to take in all the people on the platform ahead of them, one of the two latest arrivals approaches one of the Ingress panels and begins to manipulate the controls. The Ingress completely shuts down. Unlike before, however, there isn’t an imbalance felt across the ship; everything remains normal and stable.

Utilizing the computer systems located in the Ingress room, they send out the following message to the crew via the MID:

To all those aboard this vessel: I am Ira Phirun, assigned captain of the Moira. First Mate Egan and I will be commandeering all rights to the ship as soon as word is sent to those currently in charge. Expect a more detailed report as soon as all records and logs in Navigation have been reviewed by myself and the First Mate. All questions will be answered in a timely matter. For now, there will be no interruption of daily routine or reprimand if conduct among ranks is broken. Thanks for your time.

Heading to Navigation, the Captain and First Mate, for seemingly unknown reasons, approach Navigator Manasseh and have her show them all records and logs of the Moira. Those working in Navigation when the Captain and First Mate arrive will see Mana greet them in a professional manner. Oddly, the Captain and First Mate act very familiar with the Navigator. They review all documents, but when they come upon news that the Ploiatos is on board, their mostly friendly demeanor shifts quickly. The Captain issues a sharp order, unintelligible to those who are close enough to overhear parts of their conversation, and without any warning at all, Mana loses consciousness and collapses right there on the bridge. Within minutes of this happening, the ship as a whole falls into a low power state with basic functions only. Mana’s MID alerts Medbay, and without hesitation, Captain Cúrre places her in cryo with strict orders to those who work there not to disturb the unit.

As promised, the Captain and First Mate soon address the crew.

lights down low
The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill.

reuse & recycle
The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet.

new jobs, same faces
The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment?

A peaceful escape, is it. I may have to try one of those sometime. [ Admitted with a laugh, spoken as if she'd never known such a thing; certainly in her recent years they had been nonexistent, which had dragged on long enough to feel as though it were closer to the truth. Switzerland tended towards cold and clean as well; yet Switzerland is far more painful to return to. There were too many painful memories still lingering there. The touch of homesickness leaves her squeezing him a little tighter, resting against him a little heavier. ] It will always be waiting for you. I know we'll make it back home soon enough, Genji.

I'm sure I saw it. It may have been just a glimpse, but he has his honor. That's plain to see. Yet there's more holding him upright than that. I only hope that it won't take nearly so much time for you both.

[ Angela has never thought of Genji as her "creation". Her patient, her friend, her comrade— her family. All of these and more, but never her creation. Far more had gone into Genji's life and shaped his mind and body well before she had laid hands on him. She had invested countless hours, days in him, staying at his bedside after the surgery and each subsequent tuning to be as grounding a presence as possible, to soothe him when he'd needed soothing even if he often wouldn't have it; but that was building a relationship, not building a "thing". She will never claim any ownership over him. Genji was his own person. She'd only ensured that he lived to continue on as such. The way that Overwatch had done him was dirty, and it still brought shame to her this day to have been a part of it, but there was nothing to be done about the past. She'd saved a man's life and had dealt with the technology held over his head to do so. Angela Ziegler was as much to blame for allowing it to go down as it had.

The news that 76 hadn't harmed Genji was a relief even if she's still cross. ]

I'm inclined to agree; the second I saw Reinhardt come through the Ingress, I haven't felt relief wash over me so violently in a very, very long time. [ The only thing her mind brings to the forefront, really, is her early successes with her nanomites and the first few missions she'd had to sit and wait for in Overwatch, unable to do anything but hope and pray for everyone's safe return. ] I think it best we give the man his space, but I am always an advocate for extending a friendly hand. We'll see what happens moving forward.

[ Finally, finally, she'll ease off of him, looking a little sheepish if endlessly thankful at once as her arms slide from about his neck to rest her hands on his shoulders, still staying in the circle of his arms. ]

I must smell terrible! And here I've simply been hanging off of you instead of letting you inside; what was it you were coming to do?

Have you gotten your assignment from the Captain yet?

"The mechanism that brings us here errored, and in doing so transferred us to an outpost. Not exactly a good place, the people there were all criminals and honed in on whoever they could that looked out of place.

"The fact we wore uniforms make us stand out a little."

The ship itself had done little to restrain them only now. In that resources were to be moderated a little bit. But the changes to time lines comment held his attention after that unfortunate tale.

When they reach the lift, he holds the door for him with his shoulder. "You've met people familiar with you, too? There's a few from my world." Ones that had accidentally put him on a better path to fix his mistakes.

What are you known for?

[ She looks up at him for a moment before turning her attention to his gun. She can imagine Jayne wanting something like it since it's big and looks nicely threatening. Thankfully River keeps to looking, her hands held at her sides where she hopefully won't cause any fresh reasons for an itchy trigger finger. ]

Your winning smile? [ Yup, she's poking the bear a little. Sorry 76. ]

[Its a clever plan, with Reaper so focused on crushing 76's windpipe with his own gun there is no chance for him to see that he's managed to grab hold of him until it is too late. He growls, balance temporarily lost, and full weight coming down on the gun that seeks to crush the other man out of existence.

He balances on his knees, but the floor is rough and his body armor keeps him unstable. It quickly becomes a struggle to keep 76 from finding enough of a grip to toss him off.]

Stop squirming and die already.

[Her eyes do remain on him, needing to know that answer, needing to know what he knows and how much he knows. Not enough, no matter what it is. Certainly not enough.

A hand on her cheek and sorrowful eyes that have seen far too much.

Yet the weight isn't completely there, isn't bearing down on him. The war has changed them all, in little ways and in big ways. It is a failure in the first place, that war had even happened, and a bigger failure that no peaceful resolution could have been met.

Rather, everything was shaken to the core, and while, perhaps, some things would remain, there will be those scars just below the surface, scars that a fresh coat of paint cannot cover up.

She nods though, understanding then. Anakin had been upset, had already started to question whether the Council even trusted him, about whether Obi-Wan did. Looking back, she can see his confusion, know where it stems from, but only looking back.]

It seems to long ago that you left for there, but I suppose it really isn't that long.

You're not in trouble, Tommy. No one is, not at the moment.

[He shakes his head with a short laugh as he starts walking.]

But I mean, I've been gone two years at this point. That's a lot to catch up on, right?

[He pauses, hesitating. He doesn't really want to share a lot of it, but first off, maybe he should mention it since there's a good chance Tommy might find out some other way and he doesn't want freaking out--]

I'm dating... people who aren't Teddy for a start. I don't want anyone to think I don't still love him... I do, I always will. It's just-- I wasn't sure I was ever going to make it back to him and things just happened.

Radio DJ. Not a far cry from what I was doing before.

[he holds up his wub gun, something that's clearly designed from a speaker system.]

I can do a call out for you, my man. Welcome to radio Moira on this new space-day! We're all hoping Mr Obi-Wan Kenobi is having a better go of it than usual! And now, the weather. I got it nailed already.

[There's a sort of incredulous laugh from behind the mask, like Ahab has just told a joke he didn't even know he was telling. 76 has already touched base with them, and it hadn't exactly gone well. He's more interested in staying out of their way, and hoping they do the same for him.

76 isn't sure that's how it's going to play out, hence the laugh, but he files the name away. He's incidentally already met the guy, so it works out.
]

Good to know. Thanks.

[ the look shepard gives elsa can only be described as incredulous. this ship hasn't needed to make use of the guns? that's really pretty hard for her to believe. but that could just be because she's something of a trouble magnet. ]

Right. Well. [ ... ] Thanks anyway.

"And is it because of this error which caused the Ingress to be shut down altogether? It is interesting that so many people from so many different walks of life were brought to this place to serve out a contract that had no particular choice in making." It was very interesting circumstances. It would even make a curious social experiment where people weren't even aware that it was one.

Great uniforms though; they reminded him of Star Trek. He would have to look more closely at the ranking system and consider if it was worth advancing.

He stepped into the lift and folded his hands in front of him, looking around the contraption. "Oh, I've only perused the crew list and see familiar names. Whether or not they are the people I remember will for future interactions. I read a very informative document for new arrivals by Dr. Bruce Banner which explained about differing timelines and the like."

Good enough for me.

[ her tank son battle-trainee old teammate is named grunt. 76 is not as weird a name as it could be. ]

What kind of job did they saddle you with?

[ in her head, shepard is crossing her fingers that it's a job that seems somewhat useful. if only so she can stop despairing so much at the state of things here. ]
snipard: (027.)

[personal profile] snipard 2016-08-14 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[ she looks away for a moment; that's answer enough really, but then she looks back. ]

Yes.

[ there's a lot of anger packed into that one word. mindoir isn't something she's gotten over and it's not something she's likely ever to. ]
snipard: (004.)

[personal profile] snipard 2016-08-14 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess that's something. Not much, but... something.

[ while she's incredibly wary of these random people announcing themselves captain and first mate, and the way they're going about things, shepard can't help but think that maybe if a little order comes out of this mutiny, it won't be completely balls. ]
snipard: (048.)

[personal profile] snipard 2016-08-14 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
You know about the Reapers, then.

[ that's not a question.

shepard takes another bite, using it as an excuse to mull over what to say next. ]

I was in London earlier today. If that matches up with any of the stories you've got from the others.

[The longer they speak, the more Frisk seems to fall at ease. Part of it is 76's efforts, but it's also Frisk's own nature and habits at play as well.]

Um, no...or sort of? I'm one 'a th' Morale Officers, so...so I gotta make sure everyone feels okay, an' see if anyone needs help.
