old but unfamiliar faces
"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

At first, this month seems no more unusual than the previous one for those who have been aboard the Moira for any amount of time. The crew who had landed on the slaver outpost were rescued, and with everyone aboard, the ship has pushed forward into the darker parts of the Runoff. Anyone arriving through the Ingress follows the same routine—moving from the Ingress room into the Medbay for their physical and contract before being assisted by seasoned crew members and helped to their assigned decks. But all familiar things must eventually come to an end: two final travelers come through the Ingress. The first, and most noticeable difference between them and all the others, is their clothing. Both are dressed in standard Moira uniforms, though they bear the insignia of one sharing the same rank as Captains Cúrre and Thán. After a moment to take in all the people on the platform ahead of them, one of the two latest arrivals approaches one of the Ingress panels and begins to manipulate the controls. The Ingress completely shuts down. Unlike before, however, there isn’t an imbalance felt across the ship; everything remains normal and stable.

Utilizing the computer systems located in the Ingress room, they send out the following message to the crew via the MID:

To all those aboard this vessel: I am Ira Phirun, assigned captain of the Moira. First Mate Egan and I will be commandeering all rights to the ship as soon as word is sent to those currently in charge. Expect a more detailed report as soon as all records and logs in Navigation have been reviewed by myself and the First Mate. All questions will be answered in a timely matter. For now, there will be no interruption of daily routine or reprimand if conduct among ranks is broken. Thanks for your time.

Heading to Navigation, the Captain and First Mate, for seemingly unknown reasons, approach Navigator Manasseh and have her show them all records and logs of the Moira. Those working in Navigation when the Captain and First Mate arrive will see Mana greet them in a professional manner. Oddly, the Captain and First Mate act very familiar with the Navigator. They review all documents, but when they come upon news that the Ploiatos is on board, their mostly friendly demeanor shifts quickly. The Captain issues a sharp order, unintelligible to those who are close enough to overhear parts of their conversation, and without any warning at all, Mana loses consciousness and collapses right there on the bridge. Within minutes of this happening, the ship as a whole falls into a low power state with basic functions only. Mana’s MID alerts Medbay, and without hesitation, Captain Cúrre places her in cryo with strict orders to those who work there not to disturb the unit.

As promised, the Captain and First Mate soon address the crew.

lights down low
The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill.

reuse & recycle
The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet.

new jobs, same faces
The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment?

[ He snorts derisively at the suggestion, recognizing it as an insult and immediately countering with, ]

Did the captains make you a medic? 'Cause if they did, I'd ask for a reassignment, if I were you. [ Because he's not impressed with that medical advice. At all. If Leonard had to prescribe himself anything, it'd be a nice, long session in the massage chair he has tucked away somewhere on Mero deck. Something to knead the soreness out of his back. Too bad the ship's power isn't stable enough to keep the thing juiced.

He'll just have to keep working the soreness out himself. He reaches behind his back and rubs once more before pulling back. ]

[Leia nods, tucking the name away for future investigation. When she returns home, she'll reach out to them, if any are left to reach out to. If they know as little as she did about her origins, she thinks, perhaps they will be glad to meet her.

And Luke, of course--and Han, even. Leia's family has been destroyed twice now, but she's managed to rebuild it. Her Nabooan relatives might be one more step in that direction.]

Only Luke. Obi-Wan Kenobi began his training, but he-- [She presses her lips together, less out of a worry that she might say too much and more for the difficulty of that memory. They're so fortunate to know him here.] I'm afraid he passed away a few years ago. It's up to Luke to keep their ways alive now.

[Leia's met Yoda only once, and only since arriving on the Moira. Whatever he is, he's wizened enough that she's not sure how long he'll outlive Kenobi. And when he passes, Luke will be alone.

She's not sure how he'll manage that, but she plans on helping however she can. If only she can bring herself to return to her own studies...]

[ not ignorin' nothin ]

[ He observes this girl for a minute, taking in the eye, the scars, the way she speaks and moves. She's quick; energetic. And--he can already tell by the look on her face--probably guileless. He smiles at her, shaking his head slightly. ]

Don't worry none, sweetheart. 'Sides, they left my lighter well enough alone. Problem is, I ain't got nothin' to use it on.

[ He shrugs amiably, as though it's not such a big deal. ]

But I'll get along somehow. Just glad that portal didn't swallow up my gun.

You need any sleep in the first place?

[There's a genuine question in there. Gotta know what kinda robot this guy is, after all.]

I dunno. Whatever you feel like would do for a start, though. Or wait, do you have that programming mumbo jumbo?

Bet somebody's bound to have some smokes lying around. Might make you pay up first, though.

[There goes that complete lack of guile, running all over the place. Smoking ain't her vice of choice (that'd be murderizing some assholes), but eh, she knows how it goes, and she's not about to get all grudgy about that kind of thing. Speaking of murderizing, though, did he just say somethin' bout a gun...]

Yeah, damn thing snagged my bobby pins on the way in. How was I supposed to do any sneakin' around without 'em? [Still pretty frustrated about the whole thing, but, well, she's got more than enough loaned out to make up for that initial lack. Attention goes back to the gun before long, though, and the shiny stuff hanging around nearby.]

Huh. Kinda... glowy lookin'. It the kind with the lasers?

I wouldn't say I'm over it. That implies I don't care.

[ She smiles a little. ]

I'd even go so far as to say I'm willing to listen to your complaints. I don't really have much else to do.

[ Newt, you're not winning a strength contest with a full-grown Turian. Nihlus barely feels the resistance when the man digs his heels in. The rubbery 'scree' of his shoes dragging along the floor does earn him an expression of slightly exasperated amusement though. ]

Carbon-based. Dextro-protein. And yes, blue. Poisonous to humans due to high copper content. Some humans have allergic reactions to my species and it's true for vice-versa. I'm a Turian.

[ Was that everything? That's probably everything. ]

So, how about introductions? I'm Nihlus. I work in Engineering. Did you get your uniform already?

[ Okay, the last one wasn't introductions, but it occurs to him that bringing the guy to a shower was a bit moot without some change of clothes. ]

[ Better Angry Birds than Flappy Birds. At least with Angry Birds, no one usually wants to throw their devices against a wall.

The announcement doesn't really phase her considering what she'd been putting up with back home. So, without missing a beat she's quick to keep on trucking with an explanation. Just give her a little bit more to put 2 and 2 together on just who she's speaking to. ]
It's okay. I'm pretty used to people being behind when it comes to tech and all things millennial. My boss still doesn't know how to change her ringtone and she's got 3 degrees. I wish I could say she was the worst.

[ That's a combo that would be both terrifying and amazing at the same time. A combo Darcy's not really sure she wants to witness. Who knows, maybe it'll happen back home one day if Jane and Thor actually become a real thing and not a once every two years fawning buddy thing.

She'd be surprised at the guess if it was anyone else. Ok, no that's a lie. She screams unpaid intern. It might as well be stamped on her forehead. At least the stamp would include dedicated at this point considering she was going three years strong. ]

Ding ding, we have a winner.

[ And... she should probably get out of the tangle of the blanket. Try and do something in the form of a smooth recovery. Or unclod-like recovery. With about as much grace as a platypus, she pops up and brushes a few stray curls out of her face. ]

Can we try that over? We should totally try that over.
sorryitasedyou: (To burden your mouth for what you say)

[ The room was mesmerizing, something to focus on considering just how overwhelming everything else had quickly become. She didn't have the same amount of time some other people had to wrap their heads around the idea of being stuck in space, didn't know the history of what had happened before the current Captains had been kicked out. Old? Old New?

The voice draws her out of her thoughts, out of the what-ifs that had already started to burrow their way into her mind. That reminder that even if she got home, Thor had peaced with Jane and who knew when or if they'd see either of them again. Something had been wrong, like supernaturally wrong. Not that she knew the actual what. There's a single word that actually catches her attention above everything else, finally working on returning to some form of being upright. Ok, so this used to be a cafeteria - explained why it was so big. But that just really created more questions than answers and right now, she wasn't sure what else she could handle when it came to revelations about this place. ]

I'm -- This is all... [ She gives a sigh with a gesture, brushing a few stray curls out of her face with her other hand as she starts to get up. ] You'd be my new hero if you were able to track down the liquid gold.

[ Ok, maybe space wasn't so bad after all. ]
sorryitasedyou: (You may find yourself)

[personal profile] sorryitasedyou 2016-08-13 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. [ Well, that was new. It didn't really work all the time, or at least she hadn't really been expecting it to work when it came to making connections. Space just apparently had an interesting amount of people that knew him, as she'd later find out. Of course, if she never learns about Thor's contribution to the whole not!birthing Vision thing, it'll be too soon. No need to boost that whole God of Fertility idea she'd read in one of the books Erik left out. She can roll with just about anything else, and honestly with the day she's having - give her a few hours to try that one if necessary. ]

Yeah, he's kinda seeing my boss in a not official way? Jane Foster? She works with Erik Selvig? I kinda tased him when we first met and then Jane hit him with her car. [ So, clearly she's not the worst offender when it came to first impressions. ]
sorryitasedyou: (And done some disappearing)

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahaha YOU READY?

[personal profile] sorryitasedyou 2016-08-13 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
[ /Kanye shrug to that tbh. She usually teetered on the edge of sarcastic and rude depending on how uptight people were. On the flipside of that, she's also already on edge so that teetering might have moved more to a different side. Time to take a breath and keep wringing out her hair. ]

Yeah, I get that a lot. [ Ok, maybe that breath wasn't as deep as she'd been planning. ] It's the jacket, right? Or is it the scarf? [ Because she wasn't in it for the unflattering one-piece jumpsuit thing they were trying to push on people. ] No, my boss relocated us there after a robot thing leveled the last lab to continue her research on wormholes and the Convergence.

[ It's said fairly nonchalantly because guuuuuuuuuuuuess who has two thumbs and no idea about Ultron. Is he regretting giving her his attention yet? ]

Spaceception is what I'm getting from that.

[ She can hop onto the tongue twister train. Ridiculous is kind of her middle name, so this is just going swimmingly. Much better than any of the others, mainly because she didn't end up on the floor. Already ahead. Although her grip on the chair's gonna falter slightly because she didn't plan on that actually working when it came to recognition. Her eyes go big again and she kinda feels like a proud five year old that totally just figured out how to access the cookie jar on the top shelf in the locked cabinet. Duuuuuuuuude mini fame is important. ] No way, really? I mean -- yeah. [ Be smooth, Lewis. You got this. ]

I'm definitely not a warrior, but semantics. Besides, Jane hit him with the car so I at least didn't do the worst amount of damage.

[ There were a few things she and Tony had in common, pop culture references being one of them. She gives a little chuckle, almost nervous to make too much noise on the deck. It was so peaceful and she was very good at disrupting that kind of feeling. And right now? She definitely wanted it because she's never really gonna be ready for anything this place has to throw at her. ]

That obvious?

[ If she squinted his face might've looked familiar, but then again things had changed and trying to remember history books wasn't at the top of her list. ]
sorryitasedyou: (If only I were able)

[personal profile] sorryitasedyou 2016-08-13 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, you can stay.

[ Because those are some really nice tats that don't seem to just stop where he's showing her. There's a strong temptation to touch buuuuuuuut she knows better. Still, there's an appreciative look before she decides to let him in on it. ]

Well, if they're gonna try and freeze us out... I'm gonna nest somewhere comfy that isn't shared with three other people. You're welcome to join me since you seem pretty chill.

[ Haha, get it - chill because of the looking for warmth and-- yup. ]

I'm Darcy, by the way.

Well, it's beneficial for me to go on standby every now and then while my system reorganizes itself but I wouldn't call that sleeping. It's more like a nap.

The Pietro I know has two sisters. Wanda Maximoff and Lorna Dane. I know which one you mean.

[ Since that's neither here nor there, since Lorna isn't on this ship, and may well not exist outside of Medusa's own universe. Possibly she shouldn't have mentioned that at all. They don't need to get into his confusion over who willingly has children with Magneto. ]

I don't know this Rinzler. [ Off in the net of her hair there are currents, deep eddies of thought. ] Why was he interested in you? Or was it Wanda? Or were you just a convenient target with secrets?

I wouldn't say equal. Human and machine maybe, sometimes. But there's still differences made around here, based on who's what.

[Even if the Ade thing was meant to be cleared up months ago, there's still that nagging feeling in his chest that some people here would never be the same as others. The Captain's decision to slaughter the Caducans after all the grief he'd been given over Rinzler felt like a confirmation to his single view mindset.

The expression he turns to Mainframe with is...complicated. He's caught in his own bitterness and the annoyance both the robotic creatures he's dealing with. And maybe a little amusement at Rocky's reaction which only serves to make him grumpier.]

I wouldn't know what? [He glances at Rocky.] Go ahead and celebrate. You've got free passes to do pretty much whatever you want to here.

[Her mother... Oh, there is a part of Padmé that does truly wish that Leia will find her family. Her mother would, well, be her mother. She is a person that Padmé always looked up to, someone who was kind and considerate, and would cook enough food to feed a whole clone battalion. If one doesn't roll out of her house, her mother seems to think she hasn't been a proper hostess.

A few years ago... Judging by Leia's age, it seems that Obi-Wan lives a fair number of years, although what kind of life he has had, she can only guess. Not the same as before the war. No, any Jedi would go in to hiding if they were smart, and Obi-Wan is.]

They always say the Force will guide, so I suppose trust must be placed within it that it shall.

[Yet Padmé cannot help but regard this woman who is her daughter, that wistful expression upon her face. It is much like what she would say. That she has said. It might not grow as bright as it once had, but Padmé has not given up hope that one day, perhaps farther away than she desires, that the galaxy will find its balance again.]

As long as there are those who stand against these injustices, there will always be that ember waiting to be ignited again.

And that's what we do. Luke and I, and Han. [It's just second nature to mention him at this point, enough so that it doesn't entirely occur to her that Padmé has no idea who he is.] We're a part of an organization called the Rebel Alliance. We've spent years fighting the Empire.

[Some of them longer than others. It's knowledge of Padmé's own history as a politician--of her friendship with Bail and their professional associations--that leads her to continue speaking. It feels almost boastful, but somehow, she doubts her mother will think of it that way; they have so much time to catch up on, between the two of them, and politics are a way of life for Leia.]

I've been trying to bring justice to the galaxy for almost ten years now. I was elected to the Imperial Senate when I was fourteen.

[She's never rested since, and she wasn't exactly a slouch beforehand, either. Between lessons and training and steeplechase races, Leia's spent most of her life busy.]

[with most of the damaged beyond repair and garbage items sorted out the way, Fi starts to group items that look like they're meant to be together - based on type and some based on broken pieces that can be repaired. She does this quietly, letting Jensen put his thoughts together... She seems benign enough.

People will find that Fi is much more agreeable than most other AI. She served her Goddess and the Chosen Hero before all others, but Link had decided to assist the people of the ship so Fi will also offer her assistance when she can]

You speak from experience. [Thanks, Fi, great observation] There is a change in leadership now, so perhaps the ship will experience a streamlining of skills and jobs based on the previous captain's experience.

...

[She stops sorting the items and stares straight at Jensen]

Does my presence bother you? I will admit that I have very little experience when it comes to interacting with others. It was never my duty to speak with more other than the Hero and those who would come to aid him in fulfilling his destiny and so I find myself at a loss here aboard this vessel, where there are many people - human and monsters - from many different worlds.
