old but unfamiliar faces
"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

At first, this month seems no more unusual than the previous one for those who have been aboard the Moira for any amount of time. The crew who had landed on the slaver outpost were rescued, and with everyone aboard, the ship has pushed forward into the darker parts of the Runoff. Anyone arriving through the Ingress follows the same routine—moving from the Ingress room into the Medbay for their physical and contract before being assisted by seasoned crew members and helped to their assigned decks. But all familiar things must eventually come to an end: two final travelers come through the Ingress. The first, and most noticeable difference between them and all the others, is their clothing. Both are dressed in standard Moira uniforms, though they bear the insignia of one sharing the same rank as Captains Cúrre and Thán. After a moment to take in all the people on the platform ahead of them, one of the two latest arrivals approaches one of the Ingress panels and begins to manipulate the controls. The Ingress completely shuts down. Unlike before, however, there isn’t an imbalance felt across the ship; everything remains normal and stable.

Utilizing the computer systems located in the Ingress room, they send out the following message to the crew via the MID:

To all those aboard this vessel: I am Ira Phirun, assigned captain of the Moira. First Mate Egan and I will be commandeering all rights to the ship as soon as word is sent to those currently in charge. Expect a more detailed report as soon as all records and logs in Navigation have been reviewed by myself and the First Mate. All questions will be answered in a timely matter. For now, there will be no interruption of daily routine or reprimand if conduct among ranks is broken. Thanks for your time.

Heading to Navigation, the Captain and First Mate, for seemingly unknown reasons, approach Navigator Manasseh and have her show them all records and logs of the Moira. Those working in Navigation when the Captain and First Mate arrive will see Mana greet them in a professional manner. Oddly, the Captain and First Mate act very familiar with the Navigator. They review all documents, but when they come upon news that the Ploiatos is on board, their mostly friendly demeanor shifts quickly. The Captain issues a sharp order, unintelligible to those who are close enough to overhear parts of their conversation, and without any warning at all, Mana loses consciousness and collapses right there on the bridge. Within minutes of this happening, the ship as a whole falls into a low power state with basic functions only. Mana’s MID alerts Medbay, and without hesitation, Captain Cúrre places her in cryo with strict orders to those who work there not to disturb the unit.

As promised, the Captain and First Mate soon address the crew.

lights down low
The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill.

reuse & recycle
The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet.

new jobs, same faces
The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment?

"No, I'm not new to it," he said, shaking his head. "I'm a Major in the Earth Alliance, serving... well. I'm based on a station called the Citadel." Given he had just been made Spectre, it seemed reasonable to say that.

He did take a mouthful of the rations though. He had to eat something, the rate his body was burning through calories.

Dying of my own will. For me, that is the one and only absolute freedom there is.

[Morbid words--but the sincerity of his tone and purity of his smile might be enough contrast to recast them in a less terrible light.

He doesn't intend to impart a sense of fatalism, after all. It may be a single choice, but it is his.

Having that choice taken from him--

That is what he abhors about the Moira, the Ingress, and the captains.

His purpose--

His hope--

Of his choosing--

It won't? Is it really just temporary? They made it sound like cold showers are going to stay for a while yet...

[ But he sounds like he's been around quite some time. And Val likes the smile. There aren't many people that smile that honestly where he's from, and it puts him at ease, enough to stop clutching the towel so tightly around himself. The offer is... very appealing. A warm shower where the plate glass doesn't feel like a sheet of ice and the fasteners soldered into his skin don't turn frigid wounds like a blessing.

But the cold is (somewhat) forgotten when Eggsy goes and mentions-- ]

The vet's? Are there other animals on the Moira? Besides the tree kittens.

[ You know the ones. ]

[Well, obviously as far as he was concerned, he had survived, and Ash had died. Who knew why he'd survived over Ash?]

Technician? [Why couldn't he have been a technician instead of a laundry attendant?] Nice. As to why I'm here... if you've been here that long, you'd surely have a better clue than me.

[ Bee gives a bit of a blink. this is actually the first time he has met someone that immediately realizes what they are seeing isn't quite real. a little grin tugs at the corner of his lips. ]

Well I am not a projection, but I am projecting.

[ a bit of himself is there, after all. Bee can marginally feel what his avatar does. it's a difficult science to explain, but thankfully that's never really come up. but as this guy - Bee thinks its a guy anyway - circles about him, he wishes he had the right words to explain. ]

The circling is making me a little nervous though.

Snake almost feels like nodding along with each point that the kid makes, although he doesn't quite go that far, instead standing there in a stony kind of silence as those words sink in. He's pretty sure the kid isn't just being smart with him; he's talking from some level of experience.

It seems like wherever he turns here, there's another teenager who's been through hell. The Ingress sure knows how to pick them.

"All three, although the captains have cracked down on the mass murder, so you can breath a sigh of relief over that, at least." His sarcasm is subtle, but it's there. Snake works his jaw before asking, "What's your name, kid?"

I'm rather surprised that you stepped up to be his defense...

[ but ultimately, Bee has heard some of this. in less detail. it doesn't surprise him that Megatron found some legal loophole. ]

Prowl's probably pissed.

[ someone getting around Prowl... that's kind of funny. too bad Bee couldn't have seen his face when Megatron pulled that stunt. ]

I still don't know how he convinced Optimus.

[ Bee gives a little shrug. far be it from him to tell someone that there is or isn't an issue. ]

You're not alone in that, but there's really little you can do about it, right? So personally I'd rather live in the moment while I still can.

[ there's a human expression... what is it? ]

Oh what's that saying... When life gives you lemons, make lemonade?

[ yeah, that's the one. ]

So Yori knows more than she is willing to admit. Hmm. Komaeda smiles amicably; he has no reason to probe her for information about her history right now. They're just roommates. If a situation arises where he does need to specifically learn about Yori... well, he'll cross that bridge when he comes to it.

"Well, even domesticated cats came from wild cats, who needed defenses to survive. They can see much better than humans, even in the dark. They have retractable claws and a powerful bite. And they all have the hunting instincts of their ancestors and wild bretheren... there's more besides that, but you get the idea."

Fortunately or unfortunately for Sans, Bee was always called 'kid' simply because he was smaller than the others. Which was fine. At least Ratchet always meant it as a token of affection.

Regardless, Bee grinned at the effort being made to get his attention. "What if I told you I was blind? That the damage couldn't be repaired?"

Someone he doubted that the skeleton would even remotely feel bad if Bee happened to be. Thankfully, that wasn't the case.

[Hey, Armin, you know who's really helping? Not you.]

[Komaeda decides that he really doesn't want to look at this blond boy anymore, so he goes back to looking at the stars. The boy's right... there are a million things out there that could happily kill them at any given time. And probably will, eventually. If Komaeda is here, everyone on this entire ship is being put at risk, logic be damned.]

Huh...I know your mother raised you with better manners than that.

[Its as conversational as he can allow himself. The red in his armor is easy enough to spot once she turns around, and perhaps the reflection of the emergency lighting off of his mask. He doesn't approach right away -- after all, he is unarmed.

The dossiers don't tell him everything.]

[ Any time that Snake tries to imagine Liquid as a twelve-year-old kid running around and raising hell, he starts to develop a headache, so he'd rather not dwell on it.

While he would never be the one to claim that he's the "good" twin (even though Liquid had supported with his whole "brother of light and brother of dark" shtick), Snake does have to admit that he's the one who's been trying to help repair the damage done to the world while Liquid's only ever been interested in making it worse.

Still, he'll let Ahab come to his own conclusions based on their interactions here. He'd rather be judged by his own merit rather than through hearsay and reputation.

Snake lets out a self-deprecating huff. The Patriots had been subtle enough to pull the wool over his eyes, that was for sure. He isn't going to argue with Venom if he doesn't want to probe more into his future; again, that's something Snake figures should be left for another time.

The question earns a noncommittal shrug. ]
Not much. A lot of what you did wasn't ever put on record. It was rumors, mainly. I knew Miller had been part of an organization back before he joined FOXHOUND, that you'd done work in Afghanistan and Africa, but that was it.

[ Jim is extremely grateful for that fact. He's not sure he can handle many more of those with grace before he just turns and walks the other way, honestly. It's a little weird. Scratch that, it's a lot weird. ]

Well, I'd hope so. Hate to think I'm forgettable, but I promise I wouldn't hold it against you. [ He chuckles softly at the mention of the typical welcome, and ignores the itch that starts up at the mention of said feeling from the other man. ] I'm not sure mine is going away as easy as just giving it time. I have an unfortunate predilection for being allergic to most of the known universe, according to my best friend.

[He hadn't expected the takedown to be easy, even with an advantage. He knows enough about the man under the visor that he would have been angry with that sort of victory, and the failed grapple shoots adrenaline through his veins. Even with all of their time apart, he had not forgotten the other man's fighting style (too similar to his own, at times).

With one clawed hand digging rivets into 76's collar, squeezing as much as the awkward grip would allow, the other reaches for the arm that had managed to get free.

If he can't disarm him immediately with a well placed grip, then he will attempt to use his weight to throw him to the ground in what might be the most ungraceful manner possible. In between his growls of effort, he manages just one short taunt.]

Pleasure's all mine, Mettaton. Seems like keeping busy is your thing. I can't fault you there, I feel the same.

[ Definitely the most enthusiastic encounter he's had so far. It's a bright light in an otherwise dismal situation. ]

I'll make the best of it. I'm the Interpersonal Relationship Officer.

[ It's definitely genuine. Despite the situation, he isn't about to trade on his own nature to spite himself. Let's just say kidnapping and abducting aren't exactly things he's unfamiliar with happening on a semi-regular basis. Unfortunately. ]

Fair enough.

[ He can read that easy enough. Not everyone is built for this kind of thing, especially when it seems as if it is going kind of wrong. He sees him take another bite and slide the tray to the side. ]

I'm not trying to interrupt your meal, and with the rationing, I'd hate to take time away from it, so please, if you're not finished. [ A nod at the mention of the new captain's story checking out. ] It doesn't seem like a waiting game any of the people here are keen on.

I might be asking a lot here, but any information you have on them, and this ship in general---I'd be interested to hear. I don't like the idea of walking into anything blind.

[ Which is what this feels like. ]

[Pharah stands, slowly, straight, and tense. She's expecting an attack and if it comes she'll be ready - but she's not throwing the first punch. Whoever this was knew her mother, knew her when she was younger, vut she couldn't put a name to the voice which made the familiarity all the more chilling. If she can keep him taking, maybe she'll have a better chance at placing him.]

She taught me to defend myself, did you know that? [Unarmed, cursing herself for not staying in her armor, but confident in her other abilities. She tries to size up her opponent, tries to see if there's a glint off a weapon. Damn these lights.]

I asked first. You shouldn't keep a lady waiting.

I did not mean for that. Again, sorry. [ He grins once they are talking again, and she says it's fine that they take a few minutes. ] I appreciate the time.

[ Jim likes making friends. He likes treaties, negotiations, and peace talks. He likes welcoming new people into the Federation. It's one of the perks of being a captain in the fleet, he thinks.

It's also one of the reasons he ends up ripping three-quarters of the shirts he owns.

He sees the agitation in the way her hair moves, and it reminds him of the Varkolaks who came to the Academy for a time during his days as a cadet there. They communicated with spoken word, but also very much with unspoken gestures and minute shifts. Neat. ]

[ Honestly, Adrien was shocked to have heard the words actually leave his lips. He thought them, plenty of times but he rarely ever let the unguarded words pass his lips. Perhaps it was a testament to the understanding he felt with Andyr that he spoke them now. Or perhaps it was just getting harder and hard to keep them inside.

Probably a bit of both.

Adrien was already shaking his head in the negative to the suggestion when … wait, where did his laundry go? ]

I was folding that. [ He exclaimed. Keyword being was. It was such a shock when Andyr reached out and grabbed him (grabbed him) that Adrien’s feet had already turned to follow before his brain fully recognized what was happening. ]

No, wait, no I mean, [ words were hard but Adrien tried to set his heels ] I mean, no I haven’t ever heard of Muay Thai and I have to get back to …

[ He was pointing behind him towards the laundry but if Andyr really had a good grip to tug with, he wasn’t meeting much resistance in dragging the doctor along. ]

[ Playing with the new guy, he sees how it is. Fair. She starts to explain things, and Jim's expression shifts from that prior disgust to interest and then wonder. That's incredible. Actual magic. This ship is full of wonders. ]

Sometimes you can only hope for the best in little ways. [ He chuckles.] Okay, fair. So is the magic how you speak with your friend there, or is it sentient? Dragons are pretty cool, though.

I've only run into Gorn where I'm from.

[ Is he probably breaking the Prime Directive here? Yeah, but in his defense, the Ingress thing broke it first. He didn't drag all these people here, and hiding his cards isn't going to help anyone when they all have to work together. ]
