old but unfamiliar faces
"We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once."

The Ingress has pulled you in. Your body experiences several sensations at once: being pushed forward as if a hand is resting on your back, momentary and startling blindness, a gentle ringing in your head. You have difficulty discerning whether it is hot or cold, but where you have been prodded is noticeably warmer than the rest of you. Some may suffer from dizziness while others are perfectly fine. Once equilibrium has been reestablished, you will notice you are standing on a long platform and that the room is filled with a soft cerulean light. It's slightly humid and dark despite the glow around you, and nothing is familiar. Shortly after, you are led out and toward the medbay.

Inside this room, you are given a physical scan and offered a contract to sign that states you are now part of the crew of the Moira with a specific job. Any questions you might have would be answered in a straightforward manner as well as an explanation about how the Ingress, the thing that has pulled you onto the Moira, is broken and bringing people here unintentionally. This process also consists of a complete work-up of medical history and current health, and afterwards, you are given your MID, a device that is integrated into your hand or wrist with only the slightest pinch. From there, you are guided out of the medbay and to your living quarters.

At first, this month seems no more unusual than the previous one for those who have been aboard the Moira for any amount of time. The crew who had landed on the slaver outpost were rescued, and with everyone aboard, the ship has pushed forward into the darker parts of the Runoff. Anyone arriving through the Ingress follows the same routine—moving from the Ingress room into the Medbay for their physical and contract before being assisted by seasoned crew members and helped to their assigned decks. But all familiar things must eventually come to an end: two final travelers come through the Ingress. The first, and most noticeable difference between them and all the others, is their clothing. Both are dressed in standard Moira uniforms, though they bear the insignia of one sharing the same rank as Captains Cúrre and Thán. After a moment to take in all the people on the platform ahead of them, one of the two latest arrivals approaches one of the Ingress panels and begins to manipulate the controls. The Ingress completely shuts down. Unlike before, however, there isn’t an imbalance felt across the ship; everything remains normal and stable.

Utilizing the computer systems located in the Ingress room, they send out the following message to the crew via the MID:

To all those aboard this vessel: I am Ira Phirun, assigned captain of the Moira. First Mate Egan and I will be commandeering all rights to the ship as soon as word is sent to those currently in charge. Expect a more detailed report as soon as all records and logs in Navigation have been reviewed by myself and the First Mate. All questions will be answered in a timely matter. For now, there will be no interruption of daily routine or reprimand if conduct among ranks is broken. Thanks for your time.

Heading to Navigation, the Captain and First Mate, for seemingly unknown reasons, approach Navigator Manasseh and have her show them all records and logs of the Moira. Those working in Navigation when the Captain and First Mate arrive will see Mana greet them in a professional manner. Oddly, the Captain and First Mate act very familiar with the Navigator. They review all documents, but when they come upon news that the Ploiatos is on board, their mostly friendly demeanor shifts quickly. The Captain issues a sharp order, unintelligible to those who are close enough to overhear parts of their conversation, and without any warning at all, Mana loses consciousness and collapses right there on the bridge. Within minutes of this happening, the ship as a whole falls into a low power state with basic functions only. Mana’s MID alerts Medbay, and without hesitation, Captain Cúrre places her in cryo with strict orders to those who work there not to disturb the unit.

As promised, the Captain and First Mate soon address the crew.

lights down low
The lighting has dimmed in all the rooms and halls, the normally crisp air that is pumped from the vents low, and all machines and tech are running at half-speed. These effects can be found throughout the ship. Water in the showers remain hot for only a few minutes before reverting to cold. Recreational equipment powers off not long after it has been turned on. The sanitation and water filtration systems require an hourly manual reboot, and all unused areas of the ship have no power allotted to them until a crew member steps inside. Even then, most functions are not optimal. It’s as if the Moira has been transformed into a dark house with only a candle flickering on the window sill.

reuse & recycle
The Captain and First Mate are quick to establish that this is a new regime and go about making the ship and its crew more efficient in the wake of their change in course and the low power state of the ship itself. This means they will systematically inspect each occupied barracks room and leave notes for what needs to be disposed of or stowed away. Unlike before, this is no longer a pleasure cruise, and each member of the crew is a guest on board; they will not tolerate useless clutter. Anything seen as unnecessary will be either placed into storage in the Cargo Bay or disposed of through the airlock. This new need for efficiency also extends to the need to conserve resources until they reach their destination. The showers are set to an automatic timer to minimize water waste. Those few minutes of hot water are all a crew member is now given. Meals are smaller, bordering on ration sizes, and luxuries are done away with entirely in order to preserve supplies so that the ship can go longer before needing to dock at a planet.

new jobs, same faces
The Captain and his First Mate, as expressed in their addressing of the Moira, explain that work efficiency is a priority. Applications for a head of the following departments will be accepted for a short period: Navigation, the Tower, Medbay, Defense, the Hold, Sanitation, Ingress work, and the Galley/Mess Hall. (Here.) After reviewing what they receive, one head of department will be chosen and tasked with helping crew find positions relevant to those departments and their own skillsets. They will be allowed to retain any positions that they held before that aren’t ship-functional jobs, but they will have to be done in leisure time. In two weeks time, they’ll be accepting department position applications which will be approved, and all those that do not apply will be assigned in accordance with their initial work application. They will also choose three individuals to act as guards of Ploiatos to ensure that there is a rotation available at all times. Will you choose to follow this new decision and promote yourself into a position of responsibility? Or will you simply wait for a reassignment?

"Well, that weld isn't getting any newer."

Ratchet sounds nettled but not actually angry as he watches Starscream flounder. His optics flare, almost amused.

"I told you I'd come back to take a look. What, you didn't believe me?"

Don't think this thing ever had a manual anyway.

[Not that she'd give it up if it did. But it's a good answer anyway. If she thought anyone would touch the family car, she'd be upset. Instead, she's giving him something near a smile and sliding off the hood. The lack of child pressed against it reveals the large spider painted on the front.]

Welcome to hell, Daryl. They're callin' it space, but. [She shrugs, amused.] They got ya workin' down here or something?

[While one might think that nothing can surprise her further, hearing those words does throw Padmé for a bit of a loop. After all, how or why would either Leia, or Luke, remember her aside from possible holos or stories that were told about her? Yet the way Leia says it doesn't make Padmé think of tales or pictures, but something deeper.

They are bitter-sweet words, as while Padmé cannot explain how it has happened, it has. Yet, as Leia says, it would otherwise only be a dream by a daughter who would never know her mother's pride at the woman she had grown in to. A family had always been something that Padmé had desired, but duty had always come first. That, and finding someone, and even then, it is a Jedi that she wed.]

I do. [Because she does have so, so many questions. Who raised her? Was she loved? Was she happy? The list can go on, but she nods at that latter question posed on her.] Not that long ago, although it's a bit hard to judge time without making note of it.

Wow. Ratchet certainly takes no crap. Starscream is not sure if he should be annoyed or find that oddly attractive. He will probably go with the former though as he stands up and gives the Autobot medic a narrow look.

"Bah. Fine."

He throws up his hands in defeat and goes back to the other side of the room where he belongs. And poke his fish or something.

You have Q, I just get to hang out with him sometimes.

[He gives the robo dog another head pat. Good boy.]

So, run into anyone you know since they brought the new group in?
asafepairofhands: (i can tell)

[personal profile] asafepairofhands 2016-08-06 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, well. You never should have been gone in the first place.

[Ratchet watches Drift for a moment--a hundred things he could say all well up in his vocalizer at once, but he has no idea which ones he's already said, which ones he even wants to.]

I'd be dead at least twice over if it wasn't for you, kid. Worse than dead. ...why don't we call it even, figure it out from there. All right?

Then get over there and don't screw around with your gun in the hallways. You know we have kids on board.

Probably.

[She grunts in agreement. Though she's not all that sure what kings have to do with it, the reference not connecting.]

We stop all over the place, we'll get new food before long. So they don't gotta be stingy now. Unless they went and blew all their money already.

[She snorts, turning toward a table.]

Doesn't take that much energy to protest. Gimme just this and three days, and I'll still be ready to scream at 'em.

"How very accommodating of you."

Ratchet flops back onto his slab with a serene look on his face and vents a rattling sigh. He's not stupid enough to do something as dangerous as go to sleep right after he dumped Starscream on the floor, and anyway, he's been sleeping for a week. He does pull out a datapad to read, settling back comfortably and letting Starscream do... whatever it is he does, as long as he's not doing it on Ratchet's bed.

[ Tex blocks with her forearm and prepares for a repeat volley before countering with a low-placed hit. It's that simple dance—jab and block, circle and evade, move in and hit—that all has a rhythm of its own, and Tex definitely appears to be enjoying it. She's found that in this organic body there are more considerations to keeping the fight going strong than when she's inhabiting her robot body, and that's just part of the challenge as far as she's concerned. ]

It means shaken and all stirred up! At least, that's what I thought you meant by 'milkshake'. I've never actually seen shaken milk in person. To be honest, I haven't spent much time around dairy products.

[After a moment of feeling embarrassed at his own confusion, he looks at the girl and her paints and cants his head curiously.]

Do you work down here, too?

[Well, if this robot guy won't move, 76 is going to think nothing of continuing on his way, even if that means shoving past him.

That's what he's going to try and do. Here he comes.

[She snorts quietly. It sounds dismissive to her ears. But still, the woman isn't pulling her hand away. That either means she's taking the Girl seriously or wouldn't care how weak something is before shooting it. The Girl prefers to take the compliment in the first and eases off the attitude just a little.]

[>76 responds with little more than a grunt. Lúcio's not the only one with a prior engagement. He shouldn't be here, and he's starting to realize the implications now that the haze of stumbling through the Ingress is lifting.]

Tell me about it.

[Actually, don't. It's a rhetorical statement.]

I don't have time for this.

[ The last thing she wants is to deal with the Meta here on the Moira. When Maine's message comes over the MID, she stares down at it for a long, long moment. She wouldn't put it past the two of them, Sigma and Maine, to put feelers out this way without mentioning the presence of the AI. But she also knows that the first time she arrived on the Moira, she was missing Omega. And maybe Maine is missing Sigma. Hell, considering the timeline fuckery that she's witnessed with Wash, it's possible that Maine comes from a different point in time, when he hasn't even received Sigma yet.

There's only one thing to do. She needs to work out whether contacting Maine in person is safe. She's confident she could defeat him in a fight—if he doesn't have any AIs. But there's the undeniable fact that he was able to defeat her when he was collecting AIs as the Meta. She was weakened from the crash, and distracted because of Gamma and Omega, but he defeated her all the same. Which means she's not going to be foolhardy here.

So she responds to his text with one of her own. ]

Any on-board passengers?

Yes!

[She feels like pacing. She's used to having her admittedly few tantrums out in the sand, in the diner, where the boys can let her work out her energy. There was angry music to play and things to be destroyed until her arms hurt and someone came to coddle her. To remind her how the world had to work and why she should be lucky to feel even the ugliest things.

But this isn't home and this isn't being upset about Tommy raising prices or Party coming home with a black eye.]

I never had much either. [Runners had what they could carry. Anything left behind was always at risk to be stolen.] But that makes what ya got matter. You keep what's needed. Nobody has the right to take that away.

[She breaths hard, stomps her foot. That's the question isn't it? What can she do about it? Her weapon was gone and even she wasn't delusional enough to think she could take down several grown men by herself.]

I don't know. But something! Something to make 'em pay or stop. They keep comin' up with rules and this place will end up just like home.

[And underneath the anger is that fear. The fear this place is a shade off becoming BLI and history will repeat itself. There's no where out here for her to run.

She makes a strangled noise, one of the lights down the hall flickers for a moment.]

I won't let it.

Wonderful to meet you, darling!! My name is Mettaton, and I'm a Media Distribution Officer here on our...ahem. Lovely little vessel here!! I also have some entertainment ventures in the works, because that's more my skill set than courier work!

[How's that for getting to know someone?]

What is your job on-board? Did you get a good one~?

You mean, lie to 'em?

[The Girl takes it seriously, chewing at her lip as she thinks it over. She takes a few steps back toward a table, shuffling along slowly.]

I think the people in medbay would know I'm pullin' one on 'em. [She scowls.] Probably get me in trouble for it too.

You will? So they're really not gonna take all my toys away?

[Asriel perks up, looking hopeful. As much as he was intimidated by the new Captains, he didn't want to lose the few things he had. Asriel tried to hide some of his favorite action figures, but he's not sure if they'll actually be safe or not.

While Mettaton is offering suggestions, Asriel carefully reaches up and tries to take his hand. While Mettaton's core helped keep Asriel's fear of the dark away, it was still comforting to know that someone was there with him and he wouldn't be taken away.

He beams when an idea suddenly pops into his head.]

[Ah, Helix. Those guys he wiped the floor with at Grand Mesa. This is maybe a little awkward, on top of all of the other incredibly awkward implications of this conversation. Now he supposes he's just lucky he didn't run into her, when he made off with his pulse rifle.]

Hope I haven't caused you too much trouble, if that's the case.

[It's almost painfully dry. Of course he's not concerned about whether or not he causes Helix trouble. But if they're both going to be stuck on board this ship, and she's under the impression he's an unhinged vigilante (not exactly false), then he's going to need to know where they stand.]

[That's...okay. He can live with it. He's not long for the world anyway, so...]

[Very enlightening there, Reinhardt.]

What is the reason for the altercations? Is there a war?

[She narrows her eyes, trying to keep her expression neutral but finding the news unsettling. Helix wasn't a small operation and there were other bases and teams about, but she'd just learned to hold her own squad as family. She knew how it felt to lose good men.]

Not me personally, no. [But it carries a weight to it; if she finds out her people were involved, then yes, she's taking it personally.]

[She's not sure if she's encouraged or worried about the presence of other former Overwatch members, whether they can all defend against this guy or if he's going to make them targets.]

What do you plan to do, here? On This ship?

[Maybe he'll keep a low profile? Maybe she doesn't have anything to worry about?]

Never, I wouldn't let them!!

[He can't really say that truthfully, but Mettaton really would raise a stink. He's really...becoming attached to the children, especially Asriel as of late. It's strange.

Stranger still when Asriel takes hold of his hand. Mettaton blinks a few times, looking down. His fingers eventually curl inward though. This is nice. He likes the feeling of being accepted as a good friend, and accepting friendship in return.

Kids really are sweet.]

Where's that, honey? I'm always up for new experiences~

[personal profile] ex_forcechoke292 2016-08-06 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Don't.

[It sounds far more defensive than he means it in this charged and too-quiet space. Nothing settles easy in air like this. He can't even hold himself upright when shrinking back seems so much more ideal (though how much of that is injuries, he isn't saying).]

...You don't need to thank me. For this, or anything else.

[But he might just hold onto the sound of it anyway. For posterity. Knowing it can and has been said.

He starts to turn for the door, and pauses, one hand poised near the controls. Even with the opening and the urge to take it rising, he lingers.]

Are you-- [No, she's not doing alright. No one here is.] How are you holding up?

[Safer. Maybe too much so, but it's not a sentiment he can shake. Not knowing that she'd been on the Outpost and not here where everyone belonged (in a manner of speaking, at least).]
devilofohara: (sigh)

[personal profile] devilofohara 2016-08-06 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
If there ever was one, it got lost a long time ago. The old captains didn't know how to make it work - and neither did anyone at any of the planets we visited that had Ingresses.

[Which is to say: The Ingress seems to be a mystery the entire universe, except to these two specific people. And if that isn't suspicious, then Robin doesn't know what is.]

Or space ships, yeah.
