the outer gate
"Open up, and let them in."

The Moira is no more.

With the damage done to the ship due to the timeslip, all that remains is a burning wreckage and parts to be taken—if the crew can find anything in the pieces. Recovery and headcounts are the main objective for the first several hours of being planetside, and once things have settled just enough, Captain Ira calls for a meeting and addresses those who are able in person to explain the situation. He draws a rough map of the area and explains where he believes they are - according to the terrain - and where they must go. For anyone who’s listening, he describes things like an “Outer Gate”, an “Inner Gate” and “gate sectors”. Believing this to be the best course of action, all crew are asked to explore and gather what they think they’ll need to make the long journey towards the central point of the Hub. Because the MIDs are no longer working due to the lack of a network, the Captains distribute a newer tech called the TAB. It serves the same functions as the MID but is lighter, slimmer, and has the ability to stick to any surface.

WELCOME TO THE MIDWAY HUB

Now that the smoke from the crash has cleared, and injured crew have been tended to, the Captains get everyone ready for departure by explaining what they know of the Hub. Almost stone-like, the creators built a domed workspace in the largest solid space on the planet they could find. Gates are the only way inside, and anyone who catches a glimpse of the compound will see that parts of the dome are cracked. Yet, everything still appears to be relatively intact. The Midway Hub’s terrain is very rocky and difficult to walk on at times. Below the surface is a honeycomb of intermittently dense and brittle stone that makes travel difficult due to the unpredictable nature of what lies beneath the crew’s feet. Those who can develop the tech from what’s left of the debris might be able to create something to determine which route is the safest. Ships and small crafts can be used to fly, but landing is a problem—rocks jut up in sharp peaks and the clearer spots can't handle their weight. Vegetation is sparse, consisting of twisted dark gray thistles that have sprung up from cracks in the rock and burn when in direct contact with skin, and what could be considered small animals here can be seen scurrying away the closer crew get to them.

WEEK ONE
Crew are asked to hook cryo beds together and to use any appropriate vehicles that can be made or fashioned to fit the terrain to carry injured crew on the journey to the center of the Hub. Supplies are gathered, and the Captains, as well as any crew who want to, give the Moira a proper sendoff, heads bowed as they say goodbye to what’s been their home. Traveling starts out slowly, a line of a hundred-plus crew members making their way slowly forward. Stops are frequent, but camping for rest only occurs at night. Crew are assigned watch shifts, fires are built, injured tended to, and those who are able are asked to explore nearby caves and hunt for food.

Something akin to deer, though striped and only to be found in pairs, can be stumbled across at night. Throngs of dark purple mammels begin to follow the Moirans on their trip as well. They are friendly, curious, and eat the thistle. Meet the intelligent, watchful predators that aren’t easily scared away and follow the crew from a distance as if waiting to pounce. The thistle can be eaten, but only if cooked first, and those who sample the chewy plant raw will experience a burning sensation in their throat that doesn’t go away until the cooked version is consumed. During the first week, water can’t be found.

Anyone who does hunt, gather, or explore should make sure to that their TABS are on and it’s suggested that nobody goes alone.

Nearing the end of the first week, an Ingress can be spotted close by that crew can explore. If anyone dares to go inside, they will find the texture of the ground and surrounding walls to be rather soft. If inspected closely, crew will discover that what they originally thought to be rock is actually a living organism that’s fed off the energy of the Ingress it’s attached itself to. It’s not harmful and squishy to the touch. If pressed hard enough, it secretes a turquoise liquid with the consistency of water that might make a good substitute for that very thing.
WEEK TWO
When crew finally pass through the sector gates, a strange sensation encompasses them, and a depowering of sorts goes into effect. The creators put in security measures meant to put all visitors on equal footing as well as to protect themselves from harm. All crew will essentially have the strength and abilities of the average human. An unforeseen issue, this causes Captain Thán to slip into a coma as he is no longer able to continue to recover at a steady pace, and with the loss of the former Captain’s abilities, crew can no longer be brought back if they die. For the first time, all Moirans are subject to permanent death.

During this week of travel, broken ingress machines and parts will be found scattered among the rocks, and new crew will come through. Unfortunately, these Ingresses aren’t in good shape, and anyone coming through will be in varying states of distress—some physical and some mental. New individuals will either have suffered an age slip, growing older or younger than their original body, some form of body transformation (perhaps that shiny thing they were wearing is now part of them somehow), or an extreme weakness they had never been subjected to before arriving on the Midway Hub. The new people will be offered to join their group, once found, and seasoned crew will be asked to explain to them where they are going and what they know.

The rest of the week will be a mix of greeting the new arrivals and continuing to travel to the center of the Hub. The closer they get, the less frequently they’ll see animals, and more caves will begin to pop up.
WEEK THREE
Entering the third week of travel, settlements and houses begin to crop up and are prime areas for exploration and general supplies. Those who go inside may find items that have been left behind and evidence showing that those of varying species and cultures lived in the homes. Some appeared to have been scientists while others were explorers, but all living quarters are deserted. Crew who are less lucky in their search might come away with no fresh supplies, and others might walk into traps or safeguards left behind by previous tenants; these come in many forms, from mild paralysis to temporary unconsciousness. As there are more residences, there are also more caves. The entrances vary in size, and light sources will be needed to explore. Once inside, crew can find purple underwater streams, which can be consumed, and glowing surfaces. When crew drink the water, it temporarily restores powers, a few minutes tops, and then, extreme lethargy settles in for a couple of hours.

Further into the cave systems, crew will come across these lovely creatures that are attracted to sound and track through scent. They are highly dangerous and attack simply to feed. Killing them, though, is surprisingly simple as they are just as vulnerable and weak as everyone else. They are vicious in demeanor but only as strong as an average human.

The closer to the Inner Gate crew get, the less homes, wildlife, and more caves there will be.
WEEK FOUR
The Captains, aware that the crew is exhausted, stop and make camp for the first few days. Someone mentions that it’s the holidays where they’re from, and the Captains do their best to throw a party. Set up at the base of a cave, tents are built and fires roar. Soft music is played in the form of guitar, thank you Ira, and Cúrre brings out some legumes that taste like cherries when roasted. There isn’t much in the way of decorations, but crew are encouraged to dig through their pac-discs and contribute to the festivities.

After a brief respite, crew learn that the entrances to Gate A and Gate B are inside one of the caves but any signs or markings have long since worn away or been destroyed. Groups are split, TABS are synced, and crew explore carefully until an entrance is found. Crew discover Gate A first, and all crew are contacted to gather there. The Captains will remain at the cave entrance until all crew are accounted for, and then, they’ll enter through the gate together.

[ It isn't the first time she's seen Adrien drag back one of the bags of raw venison, but this time she'll try to catch him before he gets the chance to disappear again. A gentle enough approach, the thermal mug of coffee never leaving her hands for long as she finds her way to his side and offers a little smile. ]

Adrien. You've been busy again, I see. Did you have any plans for this batch? I could cure and smoke most of it, if you'd like, for a longer keep.

[ The last time had been ponderously meted out by whoever had found it and cooked over a fire for lack of many other ideas, she'd noticed, but she's grown used to this sort of work. Years in the middle east would do that to a girl not entirely trusting funds from the UN to keep war relief efforts afloat.

Perhaps she can convince him to keep her a bit of company at least through the setup. ]

[ He has been rather ally cat like recently, slinking back with his kills only to turn around and disappear again. In truth, Angela and the medical team had probably seen the most of him as he went back and forth tending to his duties and pulling his weight in between disappearing.

At least when she approached he didn't immediately try to retreat, as he had with a few others.

Instead, he stood in place, sipping on some water he'd rationed out for himself and leaning down to share a bit with Courser. The bahari was actually doing quite well for himself, being able to process moisture from the blood of his prey, so he didn't need much.

It was from this crouched position that he looked up towards Angela when she spoke, his eyes flicking briefly towards the creature before he nodded. ]

If you have the necessary equipment. Having a protein source that wasn't immediately use or loose would probably benefit us. [ He'd done something similar in the past. With moose. ]

Have people been taking advantage of the fresh food though?

[ It's likely a tactical enough decision; retreating from Angela when things were otherwise all right between them was a sure-fire way to have her pursue and find out what's wrong, all too keen on the implications and habits of those who were trying to run away. Like a predator giving chase.

It wasn't necessarily the first time she's seen his... cat? But it was the first time she's seen him up close, his coloring beautiful and certainly unique to see around. ]

My, you are handsome, aren't you? Was his name... Courser? I think I've heard you calling him. [ She'd seen him on the beach all those months (and year) ago, the last time they'd crashed. He'd been off romping in the water and she didn't get a closer look than that; he'd nearly blended into the waves. ] Mm, I can pull together a little cylinder of metal from the scrap with some shelves inside, then just put in a bowl of water and some half-used logs from the campfire when I add new on. It'll do what it needs to.

On that, though, I'm not too sure. I haven't seen many others out hunting or bringing back their spoils if they are, but the last batch you brought was doled out and cooked up amongst whoever found it and shared. The grazers that enjoy the thistle plants seem sluggish and easy to take down, as well. I'm sure a few of those have fallen as well. I've smelled cooking meat on the air at least half the nights.

And you've been doing well, I hope. I haven't much seen you.

[ Bahari, actually. Though Courser had many cat like qualities, he was also just as reptilian, with the miniature scales that covered his body and a scratchy tone that hinted at something caught in his throat.

The tracker came over at the expression of interest, Angela's scent was familiar from the medical tent and he sat in front of her looking expectant for pets. Adrien eyed the bahari and might have muttered something about sybarite under his breath before he focused on what his co-worker was discussing. ]

That should work well enough. Perhaps do some test strips, in case there is a property to this meat that doesn't preserve well. We don't want to lose an entire food source if we can help it.

[ He didn't expect the run into issues but at the same time, it was best to be cautious.

The more personal question was breezed over with a steady. ]
I'm fine. [ No more or less than that. ] Has anybody landed themselves in the tent for an extended stay?

[ (She doesn't know what Bahari means.) Yet when Courser approaches, Angela lowers to her haunches and reaches a hand out for him to sniff, fingers curled under until he seems to have approved and slender fingers fan through the mane running between large ears. She can see the fine scales on closer inspection and smiles, gentle with her approach. There's no denying Courser is friendlier than Adrien— not that she'd ever chance to reach out and pet Adrien, though. ]

You don't need to listen to him, there's nothing wrong with liking some attention sometimes. [ Then back up to Adrien, nails curling behind Courser's ear for light scratches: ] Mm, I planned on it. I wouldn't mind the company while I pull it together, if I could tempt you with some coffee. I'd like to hear a little more about this guy as well. I've never seen anything like him.

[ She's taken well to the doting pet owner life with Eiger, and it shows in the way she turns her attentions back on Courser and a second hand joins the first, massaging behind his ears and smiling. She's not the baby-talk type, but Adrien may find her sing-songing to Courser around medical now that she's earned his attentions. ]

I'm glad to hear that. [ Even if she's sure it's not a thorough answer in the least. She doesn't much pry. ] I think it's safe to say we can pack up the tent, honestly. I've healed as many as I can and the only extended residents left are you and I, and Ginko— he seems like he's been enjoying figuring out the newer technology and medicines, but I can continue teaching him without it all being out.

[ It was true none the less; Courser was a lot friendlier than Adrien. The young tracker moving into Angela's petting and then lowering his head when she delivered the holy grail of pets, the ear rub.

Adrien watched his companion with an expression that was it's habitual unimpressed, but there was a small twinkle of amusement and affection in his eyes. He didn't try to call Courser away from the attention, letting the bahari soak it up without comment. ]

We'll probably be moving soon. [ Adrien said, choosing to respond to her latter comment first. ] Though Nihlus is still asleep. [ It wasn't a surprise that most of medical had expected the Turian to be awake by now. Who, honestly, slept for days?

As for her former comments ... ]

Coffee is usually a safe bribe.

[ Her smile warms significantly as the bahari tips into her touch and she'll continue until he's had his fill of ear rubs, going back to pets that work down his back. At least she's wonderful at multitasking. ]

Mm, I figured we wouldn't stay in any place for too long. A few days to regroup, and then whenever we stop to camp will just be for those few hours a night, I'm sure. If he doesn't wake by the morning, perhaps we could move him to one of the cryogenic pods— just for transport? Then he'll be protected and it will be easy to move. We won't need to activate it.

[ With the acquiescence to her offer, she'll give Courser one last little scritch before she's standing again and moving back toward the larger campfire in the middle of a few tents— if he's wandered the camp at all, he'll already know it's Angela's and a few of her friends. A few of those she knew from her world, a couple she'd met here. No one present and no lights in the tents on.

The little espresso maker on the fringes of the fire is clearly her best friend, and the source of her thermos contents she's pouring a fresh cup from and offering to Adrien before moving to gather up the smoker she'd already fashioned. Once it's closer to the fire, she'll fill the bowl inside with some water drawn from her pacdisc's stash of bottles and then fish a couple logs from the fire to put underneath. ]

I hope you don't mind it made a little stronger; it's hard-coded for the Swiss, unfortunately. [ The coffee, that is. Angela and her espressos. ] I know this should likely cure a few days, but a couple test strips won't hurt. May I?

[ The little smoker's clearly seen use once if the smoke marks around the top were any indication, but someone had to take care of the leftovers from the Moira— there hadn't been a lot of meat left, but she'd "packed" whatever (space refrigerators???) she could at the end and got the perishables used up or prepared to keep their second night. If he'll let her, she'll take the meat from him to cut a couple pieces off before she's producing another batch from her pacdisc to preserve while she has it going. ]

[ Strong coffee in exchange for raw meat? Seems like a deal to him and Adrien simply nods as he accepts the coffee, stepping aside to allow her free access to the carcass.

Courser was a bit of a pest, sitting close to where Angela worked and looking hopeful for any scraps that might come his way. As Adrien stood and inhaled the strong scent of the coffee, he watched the little tracker with a wry expression. ]

Ignore him. He’s already stuffed himself on about three of these creatures.

[ Angela makes quick work of it, at least. It'd been dressed in the field but she sets about skinning it, a little rusty in the practice— yet that only serves to slow her a fraction; a surgeon's hands aren't to be trifled with, and she only manages a small tear near a foreleg where particularly tough sinew attached it to the breastbone. Breaking it down takes her considerable more effort, however, and her temples shine by the time she's separated the legs from the body and removed the head, preserving the neck for her testing grounds and to...

...slip Courser a couple scraps, even with Adrien's command to ignore him. She looks a little mischievous as she does so; while she may have gotten away with it while the other doctor engrosses himself in the thick scent of espresso, there's no hiding the sound of Courser scarfing down the strips. ]

My goodness, you are a glutton then, aren't you? [ Another strip, with a not-so-secret whisper: ] Our little secret.

[ Finally giving Adrien her attention now, having given him a generous length of peace. ]

Did you often hunt where you came from? I don't think we've ever discussed our homes.

[ It's usually a safe topic to help bring others a sense of calm, being able to think back to where they came from. Family and friends, the scenery left behind. ]

[ He saw that!

Adrien knows he should scold them both, but Courser looks so pleased with himself that the doctor can't bring himself to do it. Instead, he just shakes his head and mutters. ]

He's still a growing boy. Typical adolescent teenager metabolism. [ Which meant it was unlikely Courser was going to grow fat. Hopefully just big and powerful.

As for the question, it was not ... perhaps the safest topic but Adrien was used to it being raised in the course of 'normal' conversation. He gave his head a small shake and leaned back against the nearest handy brace, arms akimbo over his chest. ]

Define home. Do you mean the place of my birth, or the universe I plan to return too when we find the opportunity?

[ Saw what?? It just happening to slip out of her hands in an underhanded motion his direction— she's innocent!

At least she doesn't get in trouble for it, though. ]

I'm already amazed with his size; will he get much larger?

[ It is often a normal topic, yes, but she realizes with his answer perhaps it wasn't quite as much of one for him. With the smoker properly set up and loaded with meat, she makes quick enough work of the rest to store back in the insulated chests stowed in her pacdisc, leaving only the deer's pelt she moves off behind her camp to turn over, allowing the porous rock and dirt to soak up the blood and moisture. She'll have to find someone else skilled with tanning to deal with it, but she doesn't wish it to go to waste, either.

All that settled, she'll fill her own mug and take a dainty seat beside him, ankles crossed and tucked in front of her. ]

I didn't realize you had the option; whichever you'd grown up in, I presume. Are you not from Earth?
