"Open up, and let them in."

But he'd seen her, when she'd worn a similar expression while trying to mask the pain of the shrapnel moving through her body. When she'd been struggling to be strong for Nate. It had been part of what had always endeared her to him, the generosity of her heart and the love she had for her husband.
Even when he was being an impossible man. Not that Adrien hadn't come to learn also, how special Nate was in his own way; that he was worth the effort Elena put into him.
He didn't yank his arm away, couldn't bring himself to cause her physical pain, but he did go still as ice. For a moment, he studied her eyes even as he inwardly struggled with the all too human desire to heed her words.
She had always shown him kindness, even as she'd scolded him roundly from time to time and even when she'd learned some of the truth about what he'd done, she hadn't turned away from him. He wasn't unaware of how special that was, how ... rare. These people who had seen in to the abyss where he lived and still befriended him.
Elena, Tony, Nate ...
But on the heels of that all too human need for connection, for friendship, chased the memory of the Scourge. The Ingress going so wrong, all the lives thrown into danger and then crashing. It was a wonder any of them were alive, Isha hadn't been wrong in some of her charges.
And that made the fact that Adrien couldn't say he'd have done anything differently, all the harder to reconcile within himself. This would be the future he faced, eventually, trying to balance personal attachments with impossible choices. His heart told him he was doing this all wrong but his head ruthlessly overruled those emotions.
Lowering his arm, dropping it out of her grip, he reached up and used the back of his fingers to gently tuck a wayward wisp of blonde hair away from her face. Just in behind her ear, before he dropped that hand away as well.
Here was where some graceful words or something were supposed to slip out, but words had never been his strong suit. Dropping his eyes from her's, he turned and continued on his path away from her. ]

After learning of what he'd done, knowing his past, to Elena, the past was the past. It would come to haunt anyone but it wouldn't be up to her to use that information to judge anyone let alone him. She'd had no reason to turn him away, she knew he was hurting on the inside, she knew how his past troubled him. Were she ever in that same position...likely she would've been as bothered, just as closed off, afraid of friendships and attachments.
His hand had come up and she'd nearly reached for it to grip in silent support; she wasn't the only one hurting, he was the better candidate on keeping it all closed off for anyone to tell. Not Elena. She'd come to know him and with that had come the ability to read him.
Right now she struggled with whether or not she should push.
He'd left her at a loss for words with the tender gesture, an unspoken gratitude perhaps for how much she cared for him? A silent thank you for being there for him or trying to encourage him to talk to her?
Elena wasn't too sure.
And here she was left behind to watch him walk away. They all needed time, she would tell herself later. But right now exhaustion, her injuries, the dull ache of them and of the headache forming due to dehyration, it was all a dangerous combination and didn't help her emotions. Pushing out a shaky sigh she pinched the bridge of her nose at the immediate sting of tears that had begun; he was right, she needed to rest.
Her fingers pinched harder and she turned away, nearly bumping into someone in passing, a half-mumbled apology before she exited the tent. ]
