the outer gate
"Open up, and let them in."

The Moira is no more.

With the damage done to the ship due to the timeslip, all that remains is a burning wreckage and parts to be taken—if the crew can find anything in the pieces. Recovery and headcounts are the main objective for the first several hours of being planetside, and once things have settled just enough, Captain Ira calls for a meeting and addresses those who are able in person to explain the situation. He draws a rough map of the area and explains where he believes they are - according to the terrain - and where they must go. For anyone who’s listening, he describes things like an “Outer Gate”, an “Inner Gate” and “gate sectors”. Believing this to be the best course of action, all crew are asked to explore and gather what they think they’ll need to make the long journey towards the central point of the Hub. Because the MIDs are no longer working due to the lack of a network, the Captains distribute a newer tech called the TAB. It serves the same functions as the MID but is lighter, slimmer, and has the ability to stick to any surface.

WELCOME TO THE MIDWAY HUB

Now that the smoke from the crash has cleared, and injured crew have been tended to, the Captains get everyone ready for departure by explaining what they know of the Hub. Almost stone-like, the creators built a domed workspace in the largest solid space on the planet they could find. Gates are the only way inside, and anyone who catches a glimpse of the compound will see that parts of the dome are cracked. Yet, everything still appears to be relatively intact. The Midway Hub’s terrain is very rocky and difficult to walk on at times. Below the surface is a honeycomb of intermittently dense and brittle stone that makes travel difficult due to the unpredictable nature of what lies beneath the crew’s feet. Those who can develop the tech from what’s left of the debris might be able to create something to determine which route is the safest. Ships and small crafts can be used to fly, but landing is a problem—rocks jut up in sharp peaks and the clearer spots can't handle their weight. Vegetation is sparse, consisting of twisted dark gray thistles that have sprung up from cracks in the rock and burn when in direct contact with skin, and what could be considered small animals here can be seen scurrying away the closer crew get to them.

WEEK ONE
Crew are asked to hook cryo beds together and to use any appropriate vehicles that can be made or fashioned to fit the terrain to carry injured crew on the journey to the center of the Hub. Supplies are gathered, and the Captains, as well as any crew who want to, give the Moira a proper sendoff, heads bowed as they say goodbye to what’s been their home. Traveling starts out slowly, a line of a hundred-plus crew members making their way slowly forward. Stops are frequent, but camping for rest only occurs at night. Crew are assigned watch shifts, fires are built, injured tended to, and those who are able are asked to explore nearby caves and hunt for food.

Something akin to deer, though striped and only to be found in pairs, can be stumbled across at night. Throngs of dark purple mammels begin to follow the Moirans on their trip as well. They are friendly, curious, and eat the thistle. Meet the intelligent, watchful predators that aren’t easily scared away and follow the crew from a distance as if waiting to pounce. The thistle can be eaten, but only if cooked first, and those who sample the chewy plant raw will experience a burning sensation in their throat that doesn’t go away until the cooked version is consumed. During the first week, water can’t be found.

Anyone who does hunt, gather, or explore should make sure to that their TABS are on and it’s suggested that nobody goes alone.

Nearing the end of the first week, an Ingress can be spotted close by that crew can explore. If anyone dares to go inside, they will find the texture of the ground and surrounding walls to be rather soft. If inspected closely, crew will discover that what they originally thought to be rock is actually a living organism that’s fed off the energy of the Ingress it’s attached itself to. It’s not harmful and squishy to the touch. If pressed hard enough, it secretes a turquoise liquid with the consistency of water that might make a good substitute for that very thing.
WEEK TWO
When crew finally pass through the sector gates, a strange sensation encompasses them, and a depowering of sorts goes into effect. The creators put in security measures meant to put all visitors on equal footing as well as to protect themselves from harm. All crew will essentially have the strength and abilities of the average human. An unforeseen issue, this causes Captain Thán to slip into a coma as he is no longer able to continue to recover at a steady pace, and with the loss of the former Captain’s abilities, crew can no longer be brought back if they die. For the first time, all Moirans are subject to permanent death.

During this week of travel, broken ingress machines and parts will be found scattered among the rocks, and new crew will come through. Unfortunately, these Ingresses aren’t in good shape, and anyone coming through will be in varying states of distress—some physical and some mental. New individuals will either have suffered an age slip, growing older or younger than their original body, some form of body transformation (perhaps that shiny thing they were wearing is now part of them somehow), or an extreme weakness they had never been subjected to before arriving on the Midway Hub. The new people will be offered to join their group, once found, and seasoned crew will be asked to explain to them where they are going and what they know.

The rest of the week will be a mix of greeting the new arrivals and continuing to travel to the center of the Hub. The closer they get, the less frequently they’ll see animals, and more caves will begin to pop up.
WEEK THREE
Entering the third week of travel, settlements and houses begin to crop up and are prime areas for exploration and general supplies. Those who go inside may find items that have been left behind and evidence showing that those of varying species and cultures lived in the homes. Some appeared to have been scientists while others were explorers, but all living quarters are deserted. Crew who are less lucky in their search might come away with no fresh supplies, and others might walk into traps or safeguards left behind by previous tenants; these come in many forms, from mild paralysis to temporary unconsciousness. As there are more residences, there are also more caves. The entrances vary in size, and light sources will be needed to explore. Once inside, crew can find purple underwater streams, which can be consumed, and glowing surfaces. When crew drink the water, it temporarily restores powers, a few minutes tops, and then, extreme lethargy settles in for a couple of hours.

Further into the cave systems, crew will come across these lovely creatures that are attracted to sound and track through scent. They are highly dangerous and attack simply to feed. Killing them, though, is surprisingly simple as they are just as vulnerable and weak as everyone else. They are vicious in demeanor but only as strong as an average human.

The closer to the Inner Gate crew get, the less homes, wildlife, and more caves there will be.
WEEK FOUR
The Captains, aware that the crew is exhausted, stop and make camp for the first few days. Someone mentions that it’s the holidays where they’re from, and the Captains do their best to throw a party. Set up at the base of a cave, tents are built and fires roar. Soft music is played in the form of guitar, thank you Ira, and Cúrre brings out some legumes that taste like cherries when roasted. There isn’t much in the way of decorations, but crew are encouraged to dig through their pac-discs and contribute to the festivities.

After a brief respite, crew learn that the entrances to Gate A and Gate B are inside one of the caves but any signs or markings have long since worn away or been destroyed. Groups are split, TABS are synced, and crew explore carefully until an entrance is found. Crew discover Gate A first, and all crew are contacted to gather there. The Captains will remain at the cave entrance until all crew are accounted for, and then, they’ll enter through the gate together.

That doesn't mean you've got to be fine...

[He trails off, quietly. Torn between wanting to reassure Lucio it's okay to be upset and wanting to help him not be that way.]

[Instead, he blows out a breath.]

Did you want to stay a while, or head out?

... wh-- what if I said. Always?

[His grip tightens for a second.]

I'm gonna... I'm gonna need you always?

Maybe? Except it sounds like it's got 'bad' in it.

Week 2

Adam had seen a lot of weird things but being on a completely different planet that he hadn't known existed and having his watch fused onto his wrist was probably the icing on the cake. He was pretty sure that Henrietta had nothing on this but he also wasn't completely sure it was all real. But time passed and logically he had to accept that he was either in some strange time warp or this was real -- or both could be true, he supposed.

Despite minimal time he had to accept his situation he thought he was doing a good job. It was odd still to be cut off from the ley lines and Cabeswater completely. If he hadn't found Ronan here he probably would have gone crazy immediately. He wandered around a bit aimlessly when he had been left to his own devices until he'd been able to find some work to keep himself occupied. He'd been at work for a bit helping pitch a tent, though he wasn't exactly sure what it was for -- they might have told him and he might not have been listening.

Week 3

[Searching caves by himself was probably not the most advisable thing that Adam has ever done. Though, he's not really by himself because other people are around too but he's also not with them either. He's heard rumors that the water here apparently restores power, it's not why he came, since he's not sure he has any power to restore anyway but he's curious.

He's also not paying attention as he gets distracted by the glowing surfaces that almost look magical to him and he trips, though he's not sure whether it's over his own feet or something out as he reaches out to grab something to steady himself, cursing:]

Fuck!

Wildcard

[Anything goes.]
redshitlord: (who's this other guy you got)

[personal profile] redshitlord 2016-12-19 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
Ummmm whoops? Sorry, too late. Totally texting everyone right now.

[He's not. But he just might be, later.]

Did you have one?
redshitlord: (saw you slippin out the back door baby)

[personal profile] redshitlord 2016-12-19 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Oh.

[He sort of deflates a little, at that answer. He probably should have expected it. But expecting it and hearing it are almost two different things. He pulls his knees in closer to his chest.]

But... what else are you supposed to do? Just sit here and think about how bad everything is? That's not good, right?

[Isn't that what everyone's been telling him? To act like everything's normal. Like that's what everyone needs? It's... how do you make sense of this?]

I -- I dunno dude. I was hijacking transports and doing street-racing long as I can remember. This kinda thing isn't -- I dunno what to do with this.
knaval: (and there's another crowd)

[personal profile] knaval 2016-12-19 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
...

Then I'd say I'm glad I don't have the biological need to pee.
knaval: (ticket in my hand)

[personal profile] knaval 2016-12-19 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
Not you're not.

I'm about to have one, chill.
grandpaladin: (Fresh new kicks and pants)

[personal profile] grandpaladin 2016-12-19 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
[He gives the younger man's shoulders a squeeze.]

Any time you need it, I will be here.
grandpaladin: (we are the descendents)

[personal profile] grandpaladin 2016-12-19 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
[Well he's sure not going to stop him. That's for sure.]

[Although, when he's presented with a chair... he has to pause. And laugh, though he holds his hands out to accept it, regardless.]

So we do, my friend! So we do.
grandpaladin: (I told you homeboy)

[personal profile] grandpaladin 2016-12-19 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
Ahhh... I see.

[He pauses, stroking his beard thoughtfully.]

It is a holiday -- a religious one. But also one where people give to one another, gifts or charity. And Santa is the embodiment of giving gifts.

[That's probably easier to explain than Jesus and all of Christianity.]

[Good, that's the way it should be-- being more familiar with nosebleeds than quantum mechanics, that is. Being unable to connect the two together. That's for the best.]

[And she's here to ruin it.]

We all make choices everyday, yes? Do I wear the blue dress or the white one, do I eat scrambled eggs or just have toast? Imagine that every time you made a variable choice, a new timeline was created-- a new universe.

...I don't have to imagine it because I know it's true. The infinite is made of constants and variables, which is how I accept that some people here are from an Earth that I don't know and never will know no matter how long I live. Someone created that timeline via a variable choice.

A scientist named Rosalind Lutece discovered that these timelines existed side-by-side, and began communicating with a version of herself from another timeline-- Robert Lutece. They wanted to meet, to continue their research together, and so she found a benefactor who would finance her research. ...that man was unable to conceive children, and wanted one of his own. So when a scientist came to him saying he could have a child, one that he had conceived in a universe where he was not sterile, he couldn't open his pocketbook fast enough. [She can't look at Thane during this explanation-- it's too personal, and she still harbors so much hate for Comstock. Maybe she always will, no matter how eradicated he is.]

That man was Zachary Comstock-- the leader of Columbia I mentioned when we first met. He kidnapped me. He manipulated my father into giving me up in exchange for the substantial amount of financial debt he'd racked up playing slow horses. What was money to him when he could have the one thing he needed to keep his empire afloat? But at the last minute, my father ran after me. He realized he'd made a mistake.

They fought over me-- and I was just a baby at the time, I had no idea what was going on. They pulled me back and forth between an open hole between their two timelines, one that had been opened via a machine of Rosalind Lutece's design, the machine she'd built to bring Robert to her. Comstock won, and as the window closed, I reached for my father...

[She holds out her hand as though reaching for Thane, and perhaps the reason she only has half of a pinky is suddenly made clear.]

My body exists in two different timelines at the same time. You would think that would give me a direct path between those two timelines, but it doesn't. It means I can see everything. Or, I could, once I was old enough and physically mature enough.

Every timeline was like a door I could always see. And when I had no control they would fly open, or I wouldn't be able to shut them once they were. When we met, when I was hurt in the library, that wasn't a freak accident. I lost control and opened a tear between timelines.

You think you're dangerous? [Elizabeth finally looks at him, trying to stay calm but her eyes are nervous, even straight up afraid.] I'm a living disaster area. At least I was until a minute ago. Now the entirety of the infinite is just... gone. I can't see anything. I'm singular.

The nosebleed is from my brain struggling to make sense of what's happened. I experience 'cognitive dissonance' in a much more extreme way than everyone else does, apparently. In a way, I'm lucky I remember what I'm doing here-- sometimes, in more extreme cases, there's memory loss. But I suppose it's only minor this time because I haven't technically moved into another timeline.

[She bites her lips for a moment.] Thane. I swear to you, I can't put people back where they came from. I may be a walking Ingress, but whatever energy has been pouring out of that thing has been siphoning off what power I've had. And I've been out of control, I admit that, but... I don't want to be locked up again. I can't be. I won't be.

[Even if she's made a mistake trusting Thane, if he tells someone and they come after her... toothless as she is she won't go quietly.]
grandpaladin: (hello little friend)

[personal profile] grandpaladin 2016-12-19 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
[He's clanking his way along gathering thistle when Thane appears. He's got a large bundle of it slung up over a shoulder, tied in an old belt he'd found. It makes it easy to bring back enormous loads of it. And, therefore, feed more people.]

[But hunting is out of the question when you're huge and clanking. This is the best he can do.]

[He pulls up short as Thane appears, pausing for a moment before beaming at him.]

Of course, my friend! What can I do for you?
knaval: (or strike a violent pose)

[it's a heavy armchair, and riptide puts it right in reinhardt's arms. hope it's not too heavy bro.]

Good! Wait! Santa, are you human?!
grandpaladin: (son do not)

[personal profile] grandpaladin 2016-12-19 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
[The new face barely gets a second glance -- well, more than his usual smile and nod of greeting. But everyone gets that.]

[It's not until she actually addresses him that he speaks to her, in return. There's nothing as jovial as usual in his words, but given the situation, he thinks that would be inappropriate.]

I think so, yes. It only seems fair.
grandpaladin: (you can't touch this)

[personal profile] grandpaladin 2016-12-19 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
[It's not too heavy at all! The power of friendship will support it.]

Am I? Why do you ask?

week 2

[personal profile] pillz 2016-12-19 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
[hard to know when kavinsky realizes he's here. adam doesn't see him during the long day hikes, nor at dusk, when some of the hunters come back to share out the meat. not when andyr checks on him, or ronan offers his whatever-passes-for-sexy-affection-and-comfort-when-you're-ronan-lynch. after the days grind on, adam might begin even to wonder if the rumors of his untimely resurrection had been exaggerated.

the week's nearly over, when kavinsky appears like batman in a cheesily edited scene. one moment, adam's kneeling to hammer down a tent stake. the next, kavinsky's there, leaning against the fabric wall. thanks to the work of others, it's actually strong enough to bear up against his weight. he's eating a twizzler. or red vine. hard to tell from this distance. especially when adam's likely distracted a bit by the fact kavinsky's neck, jaw, spreading down into the collar of his uniform, is all over a spectacular array of slow-fading bruises.]

[When they were moving the cryo units, Elizabeth had seen Kobra's so she'd known he was under for the entirety of the Moira going down and ending up on this midway planet. But he seems to have gotten back into the swing of things alright.]

I'm making something. [She turns her sketchbook towards him to show off her sketch. It's alright, lots of contrast and she's capturing the glow well enough but it's not exactly professional. Still, she seems satisfied.] It's coming along.

[He doesn't do anything for a moment. Then his shoulders start to shake. Until... he's laughing. It's a quiet, hollow little noise, but he's laughing.]

I'm. I'm glad you don't too.

[As always, he's compelled to return that million-watt smile, though his own is much milder in comparison. Reinhardt always seems to show all of his teeth. Thane, in contrast, never shows any of his.]

I'm afraid I've made a poor judgement call with my latest kill.

[He gestures back the way he came from with one arm.]

It's rather larger than the ones I've taken before. I was wondering if I might borrow your strong back?

[In truth, as far as Adam knew, his presence was something that they were attempting to hide from Kavinsky. Something he'd never thought was a feasible feat to begin with and so when he hears that grating voice and Kavinsky's leaning against the tent in a way that seems so cocky to Adam that he wants to punch him... -- well, he's just not surprised.

The work is mostly done at this point and Adam looks up at him, eyes the candy and then returns to finishing what he's doing. He'd noticed the bruises but he also doesn't particularly care.]

What do you want?

[He doubt Kavinsky wants to have a friend chat.]

I need something else to focus on.
